Hello guys, good evening. Can anyone tell me about SMS hybrid inverter in terms of durability and performance? I am planning to get a 10.2kva sms transformerless hybrid inverter to replace my older inverter that got damaged. Also, I heard that transformer based inverters are better than transformerless inverters. Also, is there any need for me to add another mppt charge controller to an hybrid inverter that already has a 160A mppt controller? The installer was telling me that I should still get a separate charge controller for it… Please Nairaland inverter profs, I need your urgent response.

Finally, apart from Felicity brand, which other inverter brands are reliable and durable and affordable? Thank you.

You are quite correct to an extent. I used to be anxious about inverter idle consumption. Then I later realized it is actually the inverter efficiency you should be thinking of indeed. Initially I was using a Single unit Renogy inverter with 12W idle consumption power. I discovered i was only about to use just about 80% of my battery capacity. Then later I moved to an All in one that had 32w idle consumption and I still noticed it is still around 80% of battery capacity I can squeeze out so looks like efficiency is the number to look at.
The only case you want to actually look at idle consumption is when your load is very low. If you have maybe 80W load. Perhaps all the stuffs in your house are off but you still have some critical loads like wifi router, security camera etc that has to be on and the total wattage is like 80W, and then your inverter has 100w idle consumption, you are going to be wasting alot of battery. So people who oversize their inverters need to note this

My transformer based 24v 2.5kva inverter has idle consumption of 26/27w
Welion 1.5kw 24v hybrid I installed has 27w idle as well.
My inverter face don see a lot, there was a time that it was giving burnt smell because the fan didn't work, it took me a week to figure that it was d inverter after which I installed a separate fan with switch. I put it on whenever I use heavy loads.
My inverter at least will show 10% usage all day n night but I only put on fan whenever I'm using like 40%+. the kind noise some hybrid go dey blow at intervals alone.

In simple words, he meant to tell you to have extra money in bank ready to be spent whenever that your new Hybrid inverter goes bad, as e no rugged reach the previous one you were using which is transformer based.

Boss, 78w idle power consumption for 5kva of transformer based is better. Hybrid is not better at all. Mine consumed 72w and I'm planning to change it.... 5kva 48v hybrid inverter should consume 50w max on idle mode.

@ISJ: I'm a realist and not one of this textbook theorist. I test things and obtain the actual performance. For the 1000w inverter, we use it regularly to cook, but we use only one plate at a time and without any other devise on. The spec of the electric cooker is 2000w. We also use the same inverter to pump water using our 1hp pump. See, there is nothing wrong in using a device up to its rated capacity. They are actually designed to handle that rated capacity without problem and that is why it's stated, except if the device is fake or substandard.

Gone are the days of Surges on motor equipments.

Unless you really have old tech Applications.

Most applications now run DC brushless motors and more energy efficient tech are been developed.

HF Inverters just work for most applications without stress..

Transformer based devices are dying already.. embrace the new era and save cost..

Abroad uses hybrid inverter and also use standalone.

Even why compare abroad with us, their heavier load is connected to grid .

They connect their system with the grid, if their system is making or generating excess power it turns their utility meter backwards hence they are suppling to the grid .

When their system is under performing the grid or utility is used. So please why compare we in Nigeria to them. Their inverter virtually does nothing.
But in Nigeria here without grid, same inverter water heater, pumping machine and ac.

These are 2 different days..

The Panels are 5, units of 570w which make its total of 2850w, but in the picture you can see this is what is going into batteries 2716w, there was about 150w load inverter has idle consumption too.

The inverter do show 3000w+, even If inverter dey lie, this Shunt has more precision considering there was load on and battery are being charged at 2654-2716w say a lot about the panel output over 100%

Update, i have finally acquired a 10 kva inverter and for the last 2months i have sampling and pushing the limits of the inverter. Thanks to everyone that gave suggestions on the brand to buy.

I settled for Felicity ivps100 48. Purely inverter and non hybrid. I can comfortable power 2 ac , use threadmill while my wife is using hotplate. I have thrown different gadgets with different scenerous at it. You name it water heater, with ac, pumping machine all. The inverter stand no shaking.

Since i am okay with this, like i wrote way back on this thread. I don't sell most of solar items after an upgrade its been a journey of 13 years. I have to create space and let go of things.

Science isn't unpredictable, though. If you're seemingly getting more power than the maths says you can get, then it just means your measuring instrument is inaccurate.

I know some inverters and CCs (Powmr, for example) have inflated pv output readings.

I also arrived at 3257W max possible harvest using the lowest current among the panels as the max current possible from his installed capacity of 3704W.

If he getting higher than the calculated max possible harvest, maybe that theory about using the lowest current to derate may be wrong after all.

That is why it is always good to test and measure before accepting anything as fact. Thanks Mr Peter for throwing up this data.


Now with this new info, I went to use the Isct current (9.06A) to redo the calculation and arrived at max possible power of 3412W, which corresponds with what you are getting.

Your next research should now be what happens to the panels (sunpower in this case) that are consistent run at short circuit, to know if there are any effects on them. Because I believe the JK panels will be driving lot of those currents when there is enough sunlight to do so.

Arranging all similar panels in series then paralleling them would hvv given you over 70% loss....i think this was where the myth of derating to the smallest panel comes from

The most power I've gotten from a 1.74kw array so far. 93%. Considering temperature, perfectly in line with what Jinko rates the panels at.

Point is, you can't go wrong with Jinko panels.

It would be in 2 strings since its a double mppt inverter. There are 4 mc4 connectors showing in the picture for the panel input side

I doubt if you would see any new product without any form of challenge. Even the MB30 and MB31 Eve released has their various challenges.
Lithium ion phosphate has a working voltage range of 3.000v-3.400v.
54.4v bulk charging and 53.6v float charging has always been my charging range.

If you want to know the difference between grade A and grade B cells, cycle them over several years and then check for capacity. Don't go on what is stated by a manufacturer. Lead acid is known technology. Lifepo4 is new technology with lots of unknowns.

One of the members here discovered 20% capacity loss of his supposedly grade A eve cells after just two years of usage or less than 800 cycles:

Again I take the 6,000 cycle promise with a grain of salt and look at the warranties given which are often 5-10 years or max 4,000 cycles.

All these airtel and mtn plans have a fair usage policy that come into effect once a certain amount of data has been used. You'll think its unlimited but its not. Unlimited is when nothing and i mean nothing caps your speed or data usage is restricted.
