Business / Glo Offers Subscribers 700% Bonus On Recharge, Other Berekete Benefits On Data by peterobosa: 10:30pm On Oct 06, 2020

In its bid to enhance the telephony experience of its teeming subscribers, total telecommunications service provider, Globacom, has introduced Glo Berekete, a new tariff plan which offers more voice and data benefits to its new and existing customers.

The company explained at the launch of the product in Lagos on Tuesday that Berekete means ‘abundance’ in local patois, saying that this emphasises the premium it places on its customers. Globacom also promised to continue to meet and exceed their expectations in product and service delivery.

The impressive launch of the product was graced Globacom’s newly unveiled brand ambassadors, Michael Collins Ajereh, popularly called Don Jazzy; ace singer, Teniola Apata, fondly addressed as Teni The Entertainer; another popular musician, Simisola Kosoko (Simi); Africa’s highest scorer at the last Nations Cup and Manchester United attacker, Odion Ighalo and World Heavyweight Champion and holder of four boxing titles, Anthony Olaseni Joshua whose endorsement deal was recently extended by Globacom.

According to Globacom, under the new product, every new customer gets a welcome bonus of N600 upon successful activation of his or her line. “The successful activation includes registering the SIM, recharging with a minimum of N100 and making a first call. N400 out of the bonus credit is for calls to any network, while the balance N200 will be converted to 200MB of data,” Glo said.

Other benefits of the package include a massive 700 percent bonus on every recharge to call all networks and to browse the Internet. The network explained that, depending on the recharge denomination, subscribers could receive up to N20, 000 voice bonus and 5GB data bonus from a single recharge. “The voice and data bonuses can be used over seven days from the day the line is credited,” the network added.

Globacom also added that new customers will equally enjoy up to 100% extra data volumes on all data plan purchases between N50 and N10, 000. The offer, Glo disclosed, is applicable for the first four months of joining the network.

The network further disclosed that new customers will get on the Berekete tariff by default, while existing prepaid customers will subscribe by dialling *230# to instantly enjoy the 700 percent bonus on all recharges though they will not be entitled to the one-off welcome bonus as well as the bonus on data plan purchases.

Business / It Is Difficult Investing In Nigeria's Unpredictable Power Sector by peterobosa: 3:35pm On Aug 10, 2020
The problem in Nigeria’s power sector is not rocket science, and if it’s rocket science, you have rocket scientists that are able to deal with it. There’s no reason why we shouldn’t get it right. Well, there are several factors that I think a lot of folks don’t understand about our sector. You know, there’s a lot of conversation in the sector where we will say, yes, we’re willing to pay more money for electricity as long as we are sure we’ll get power 24/7 coming into our homes, our offices, our factories and whatever you have. However, it’s a little bit of a chicken and egg situation; if you don’t pay enough, the power sector doesn’t get fixed. If the power sector gets fixed and you don’t pay enough, it can’t be sustained. So there’s a little bit of dance to do around there. We have a value chain that we speak of and the value chain, if we focus right now only on gas-fired power plants, we’re talking about gas production, gas transportation through pipelines or whatever means you have and the power generation companies (GENCOS), and then you transmit the power through transmission lines and finally get to distribution networks. The distributors now take power and distribute it to their customers’ homes, factories, and offices. This is the entire value chain. So, gas flows from one site, all the way to the GENCOs to generate the power, and then it flows all the way to the customers. Then the money flows from the customers all the way back to pay everyone along the value chain. If any of these pieces is broken, the power sector doesn’t work. And it sounds very simple.

However, the amount of investment needed to make this value chain work is humongous. If you want to produce enough gas to fire a 495-megawatt power plant, you need to invest at least $250 million for a brand-new processing plant. Now, I’m not even talking about the investment that the gas producer makes to drill in his fields to bring out the gas. This is just the processing facility, and then you need to run pipelines, depending on where the plant is situated. If it is situated right next to the gas processing plant, it could cost anywhere from a couple of million dollars to get the gas to the GENCOs or hundreds of millions of dollars to build a long pipeline to get it where it’s going. Currently, the AKK pipeline is about to be built. The AKK pipeline is over 600 kilometres long, and it costs several billion to build a pipeline. Someone is making that investment.

Beyond that, someone is also going to make the investments to upgrade our transmission lines in the country. That’s a whole lot of money. We’re talking about hundreds of millions of dollars to build. And then finally, we get to the DISCOs. The DISCOs, when they were sold; what we were told was that the Discos have ATCL losses of around 45 per cent. That is the Aggregated Technical Commercial Collection (ATCL) losses. Now, what we’re finding is that those DISCOs, some of them have ATCL losses above 60 per cent. What that means is, for example, if you give them 10 megawatts of power, and they sell, they are able to collect only 40 per cent money for the power that they’ve given. Everything else is gone and lost. How can the DISCO survive? You can’t run a business this way.

Business / Cost-reflective Electricity Tariff In Resolving The Power Crisis In Nigeria by peterobosa: 3:14pm On Aug 05, 2020
The Managing Director/CEO, Century Power Generation Limited and Nestoil Executive Director, Dr Chukwueloka Umeh has said that the total deregulation of the power sector will motivate investors to put money into all areas of the broken value-chain which will ensure that consumers enjoy quality power supply.

Dr Umeh who was speaking at a virtual media roundtable on the Power sector in Nigeria said called for total deregulation of the power sector which must include the adoption of cost-reflective tariff regime. He said this is the only way Power Distribution Companies can attract the needed investment that will improve present infrastructure. He argued that cost-reflective tariffs also have a positive ripple effect on the Power Generating companies.

The Century Power boss said the Government’s role in the power sector should be limited to setting the regulations that would attract investment into the sector and not regulations stifling it. He added that poor infrastructure is affecting the operating capacity of the DisCos which was why a large percentage of 200 million Nigerians are not included in the current national grid network, adding that out of the 9 million registered customers across the 11 DisCo networks in the country, only about half of them have meters.

Dr Umeh commended Government’s initiative in allowing private firms to provide meters for consumers as this has allowed the Discos to focus primarily on their core business. He, however, added that total deregulation which would attract more players into the sector as evident in the telecom. The implementation of a new tariff by the electricity distribution companies (DISCOs) was recently put on hold, a situation he said elongated epileptic power supply in the country.

Business / Why FG Sould Exit The Power Sector by peterobosa: 8:16am On Jul 22, 2020
The Federal Government has been advised to stop further interference in the activities of the power sector if the industry must move forward.

Chief Executive Officer (CEO) of Century Power Generation Limited and Nestoil Executive Director, Dr Chukwueloka Umeh, stated this during a webinar media interaction with the theme ‘The Dilemma of Electricity Regulation in Nigeria’ in Lagos at the weekend.

The firm is currently developing a 1500MW gas-fired plant in Okija, Anambra State being developed in phases, including the first phase of the 495MW open cycle plant.

Umeh regretted that the inability of the Federal Government to allow free-market operation of willing buyers and willing sellers interface remained a major disincentive for the industry.

He said a situation whereby the government is still interested in fixing the price for gas producers and determines tariff for Discos will not encourage the required investment required to grow the power sector.

The power expert explained that once gas and electricity tariff is not right, investments in additional power plants cannot happen because lenders would not be willing to provide the finance required to kick start the project. ‘‘For instance, if you are to build a new gas processing plant to fire a 495MW power plant, you will need to invest at least about $250 million to make it work. This is just for the gas processing facility, besides the pipelines needed to transport gas to the power generating plants. This entire infrastructure according to him, requires investment which can only come from revenue collected from consumers.

Regrettably, he said Discos are battling huge collection losses occasioned by energy theft which in some cases is about 60 per cent, an indication that they are only able to collect about 40 per cent of the cost of electricity distributed.

Phones / Glo Reduces International Call Tariff By 55% by peterobosa: 8:40am On Jul 17, 2020
Nigerian telecommunications operator, Globacom has slashed international call tariffs by as much as 55%. The company has said this is a move to help Nigerians better connect with friends and family abroad in these difficult times.

Glo made this known in a press statement issued in Lagos on Tuesday, they said the reduced tariffs, which come without any subscription fee, cover calls made to major destinations such as the United Kingdom, France, Italy, Ireland, South Africa, Spain and Saudi Arabia. Other countries affected by the reduction are Cameroon, Niger, Benin Republic, Togo and Cote d’Ivoire. The specific tariffs for each country vary, but are the most competitive in the market, the company stated.

For instance, calls to the United Kingdom which used to cost between N30 and N130 per minute now cost between N24 and N100 per minute depending on the network the call is being terminated on. Similarly, calls to Spain and Italy have been reduced to N75 and N60 per minute from N90 and N130 respectively.

Also, calls to South Africa will now attract N85 per minute instead of N150, while calls to Saudi Arabia will now be charged at N55 per minute, down from the former N60 per minute. For France and Ireland, the tariff has been slashed to N50 and N40 respectively from N65 and N60, Côte d’Ivoire, Benin Republic, Cameroon, Togo and Niger N150 instead of the old N200 per minute rate.

Glo has urged all subscribers to take advantage of the tariff slash to connect and talk at a cost-effective rate with friends and family in the countries covered by the offer especially in view of the prevailing international lockdown caused by the global coronavirus pandemic.

“We understand the need for our subscribers to stay in touch with their friends and family overseas now more than ever before. With the ban on international travels imposed by most countries because of the COVID-19 pandemic, people are unable to travel to reunite with loved ones. They now rely heavily on efficient and affordable telecom services to communicate with them. We have, therefore, reduced tariffs to these major destinations to make our subscribers still feel at home even when they are thousands of miles apart from their loved ones,”Globacom said in a statement.

Glo’s call rates to other major destinations like the United States, India and China are still the most competitive in Nigeria; they offer 50 kobo per second for calls to these countries.

Phones / NCC Report Shows That Glo Has Added Over 8 Million Subscribers In 5 Months by peterobosa: 9:29am On Jul 16, 2020
No doubt, competition among major internet service providers (ISP) in Nigeria has been intense, as the ISPs ensure that their brands are known as the best, most affordable and fastest in the industry.

From MTN’s Nedu Proposal Data commercial to Airtel’s Data is Life, or Glo’s Emoji campaign and 9Mobile’s Moreblase, more affordable, it is obvious that these TV commercials must have cost the ISPs fortunes, as most of them are Nollywood star-studded.

Despite the intense competition in the last five months (January – May 2020), it appears that one of them has taken others by surprise and attracted more subscribers.

According to data released by the Nigerian Communication Commission (NCC) recently for the period ending May 2020, indigenous mobile telecommunication company, Glo dwarfed other competitors, as it gained 8.302 million data subscribers when it grew from 28.934 million in December 2019 to 37.236 million by the end of May 2020, while MTN gained 4.75 million data subscribers. Airtel, which used to be the second-highest in subscribers growth after MTN, recorded 2.795 million, while 9mobile lost 812,827 subscribers within the same period.

Meanwhile, Nairametrics had reported that the nation’s telecommunication landscape witnessed a high level of competition in terms of data offering in 2019, as operators in the industry intensified their efforts to increase their market share in a fickle industry.

NCC’s data for the period ending December 2019, revealed that Nigeria’s largest mobile telecommunication company, MTN, gained 8.18 million data subscribers, and Airtel successfully edged out Glo in terms of data subscriber numbers, as the telco added 4.06 million subscribers over the indigenous brand.

Competition between two of Nigeria’s largest data sellers, MTN and Airtel took different turns in 2019, as MTN recovered from the drop recorded during the year.

Glo leads the pack ahead of MTN, Airtel. The competition has taken a new twist so far in 2020 (January – May 2020). Though MTN and Airtel, the two Nigeria’s largest data sellers, have 58.863 million data subscribers and 37.317 million subscribers respectively, Glo, which is the third-largest came from behind to outrun the ‘big players’, as more subscribers opted for the service of the indigenous ISP during the economic lockdown imposed by the Coronavirus pandemic.

What it means: While MTN and Airtel managed to attract only 689,593 and 41,791 subscribers in March and April (Peak of the lockdown) respectively, Glo smiled to the bank, as it attracted new 2.072 million data subscribers within the same period.

Religion / Paul Adefarasin, House On The Rock, And The Legacy That Is The Experience by peterobosa: 4:00pm On Dec 11, 2018
Paul Adefarasin, House On The Rock, and the legacy that is The Experience

The City of Lagos stood still on Friday the 7th of December 2018 as Paul Adefarasin’s House On The Rock church hosted the 13th edition of the world-famous annual gospel concert The Experience concert. This year’s event, themed ‘Jesus our Peace’, drew a whopping crowd of over 600,000 worshipers at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) in Lagos Island. Countless other watched live from all over the world.

Ever since Paul Adefarasin headed the first concert in December 2006, The Experience has grown to attract at least 500,000 people yearly in an event that is a major highlight of each year’s activities.

Economically, the impact that The Experience has created will survive the test of time as enterprises in the human capital development, hospitality, commerce and industry sectors have benefited greatly. The Experience concert has grown to be a significant contributor to the economy of Lagos and Nigeria as a whole.

The Entertainment sector, particularly, has benefited from The Experience over the past 12 years. Many of Nigeria’s local gospel acts who have been showcased by the concert went on to become much sought-after in the international scene. There have also been numerous collaborations between Nigerian and other international gospel musicians over the years.

Pastor Paul Adefarasin, while making a statement at The ‘Experience 2018 press conference, noted:

“While we do not take all the credit for the growth of the Gospel industry, we are proud to say that The Experience has played a very prominent role in this regard. The socio-economic impact of this mammoth occasion is evident and lends credence to scriptures in the Psalms which attest that God blesses and causes the earth to yield its increase to His people whenever He inhabits their praises.”

TV/Movies / Christmas Blockbuster, “god Calling”, Set To Hit Cinemas And Churches Nationwide by peterobosa: 9:39am On Dec 10, 2018
At a time when the moral and ethical standards of our society are being heavily influenced by entertainment, and we see the Church struggling to be part of the conversation among young people, Heart In Motion (HIM) studios brings an inspirational movie which looks at family and faith through the lens of an unconventional encounter with God in this modern age.

When Sade, the central character suffers a personal tragedy, she is taken on a journey of self-discovery and faith which transforms the lives all those around her. God Calling shines a spotlight on modern day spirituality by imaginatively exploring what it might look like for Abraham or Prophet Elijah to be Nigerian in 2018, and have to contend with disbelief as well as modern-day realities such as smartphones, and social media.

Written and directed by BB Sasore, creator of Before 30 and Banana Island Ghost, God Calling is set for release in cinemas this December 21st. The film features a stellar cast made up of Zainab Balogun, Karibi Fubara, Richard Mofe-Damijo, Onyeka Onwenu, Nkem Owoh, Tina Mba, Patrick Diabuah, Chidinma Okebalama (Chee), Diana Egwuatu, and a host of others.

Speaking on his inspiration for the movie, Sasore stated: “As a filmmaker, I considered how the world is looking to our continent for original stories, and how the Bible is filled with the most original stories that we each experience in our own way every day. It led me to think of how religion would adapt to time and geography, and this is what birthed ‘God Calling’.”

“I think our film industry has so much potential but lacks the infrastructure and resources to compete globally. I believe the faith-based genre could do for Nollywood what martial arts did for Oriental Asia, or romance did for India.” he said.

According to Analysts, the Nigerian film industry remains a dominant player within the arts and entertainment sector which has grown rapidly over the past two decades, and needs to be increasingly supported as one of the country’s largest non-oil exports. Produced by Omorinsojo Spaine, the movie was backed by Executive Producers Ibukun Awosika, Derin Adeyokunnu, Yomi Jemibewon, Patricia Jemibewon, Uzo Nwagwu, Chijioke Uwaegbute, Karibi Fubara, ZeeZee Ihe-Okuneye, Olalekan Olude, Opeyemi Awoyemi, Dolapo Awosika, Enyi Omeruah and Chioma ‘Chigul’ Omeruah.

Paul Adefarasin prays for Nigeria at The Experience 2018 Concert

The Experience Concert held on Friday, December 7th 2018 for the 13th year running at the Tafawa Balewa Square (TBS) Onikan, Lagos. It was a fantastic experience all though. The event, which is a ministry expression of Pastor Paul Adefarasin and his House On The Rock church, had the whole world worshipping from 7 pm on Friday night up until the early hours of Saturday morning. This year’s edition was themed ‘Jesus our Peace.’

The concert featured a powerful line up of award-winning and renowned indigenous and international gospel musicians such as Don Moen, Kirk Franklin, Donnie McClurkin, Timi Dakolo, Travis Greene, Nathaniel Bassey, , Vicki Yohe, Chioma Jesus, Tope Alabi, Eben , Tim Godfrey, Mike Aremu, Glowreeyah, Onos, Eno Michael and Chee. And for the first time at The Experience is JJ Hairston, Planetshakers and Ada Ehi. Kudos to Pastor Paul Adefarasin and House On The Rock church for making this a reality. We can never go wrong by worshipping God.

The Experience averages a yearly attendance of over 500,000 people at the venue, with millions more watching live online from all over the world. According to Pastor Paul Adefarasin, the concert has grown to become the biggest gospel concerts in the world. The Experience Concert was first held in December 2006 at Tafawa Balewa Square with 70,000 people in attendance.

Paul Adefarasin at a press conference on Friday explained that the inspiration behind the 2018 theme is to highlight who Jesus is, especially in the world we live in today – the Prince of Peace. The allure of The Experience Gospel Concert is its penchant for unifying people irrespective of nationality, faith, gender, status or political persuasion.

Adefarasin noted that regardless of the outcome of the forthcoming elections; peace is the ultimate candidate that we should all support, and must be the candidate that wins.

“Despite many challenges Nigerians may face, we cannot afford to lose faith in God’s ability to turn things around for our good, choosing to see a bright future, the Nigeria of our dreams, one that we can proudly bequeath to the next generation.”

“Our elected representatives can no longer afford to the selfish luxury of focusing on their own interests; rather they must be fully capable of managing our affairs.”

“The population can no longer sit back and complain of lack of clear direction. It is time to become change agents, nation transformers and the solution that Nigeria has long awaited. Providentially, the Nigerian electorate is fast evolving from nonchalant, passive onlookers into politically keen, invested and active participants seeking to develop and enshrine good governance, as evidenced by the number of technocrats vying for elective positions in the forthcoming general elections.”

Adefarasin said each Nigerian registered to vote must do so with a clear conscience devoid of prejudice or self-interest.

“Our vote must be for peace, transparency, credibility, equity, justice, inclusion, development and unity. Patriotism should be of necessity, be our motivation and above all, peace must be our ultimate candidate regardless of the outcome of the elections. We all need to work together for a peaceful win.”

The Experience Gospel Concert 2018 It was indeed a night of worship as Jesus was exalted as King. The event was well attended by members of the media, captains of industries, doyens in the marketplace, diplomatic corps, government officials, statesmen and a plethora of guests. We can’t wait for 2019!
