Travel / The US Wants To Know What You Share On Social Media Before Granting You A Visa – by petra22(f): 4:06pm On Jun 05, 2017
As part of the latest US immigration policy, social media background checks has now been approved by the U.S. government’s Office of Management and Budget making it one the new requirements for visa applicants.

Now before you start to fidget about some of your posts on social media, what does this new development really mean?

Well for starters, if you plan on visiting America for whatever reason, you should be ready to give full disclosure of all your social media accounts and that includes Facebook, Twitter, Instagram and the likes of them.

So far, the new development has received a lot of backlash from critics who say that it is just an obstacle the US is putting in the way of intending visitors.

Social media has become a huge part of our lives and there are also the group of people who do not even have a life outside of social media. We share almost everything on social media, from big announcements to our perspective on issues affecting us. We share the good, the bad and the ugly. Isn’t it only right for the US to want to know about this aspect of our lives? Afterall, Visa questionnaires and interviews are conducted to know more about an intending visitor and the purpose of visit.

This is not to say that we need to put a censorship on what we share online but instead get a better understanding of how social media works. Before signing up to any social network, there are terms and conditions we must agree to. The wise thing to do would be to carefully read those terms and conditions and decide if we are comfortable with its content before clicking agree. If you do find certain contents of any terms and conditions unsettling, you are at liberty not to join such network. If you wouldn’t sign a contract without reading then why would you agree to terms and conditions you have absolutely zero knowledge of?

Quite understandably, some social networks are almost indispensable for business and general day to day lives – the likes of WhatsApp and Facebook. In such cases, you can actually control what people see and who sees what you share through the privacy setting. It is your social media account, take charge of it.

The US authorities would also need to be fair in its judgement of people based on what they share online as we are only humans. The fact that someone parties all weekend doesn’t make them any less of a serious minded individual. There needs to be a fair judgement on the conclusion of the background checks conducted on people’s social media accounts. Should you really be denied a visa simply because you have a contradicting view of Trump’s policies? All these points to the fact that there is freedom of speech but freedom after speech is not gauranteed.

It is however disclosed that this information will only be required when there is a need to conduct national security vetting on an intending visitor. So except you are a threat to national security, you have nothing to fear.

In the near future, it is expected that social media background checks will become a necessity during recruitment of employees into a company and even enrollment into institutions.

It’s not just social media anymore guys. Retweets might not be endorsements but you are you tweets, you are what you share online. If you have the American dream and you feel Trump might not be too happy with your Facebook post, then think twice before clicking send.

Politics / Is The Recession Truly Over by petra22(f): 12:43pm On Apr 23, 2017
Dear Mr President,

How are you doing? I hope this open letter meets you well. I bet you have eaten today and not just any meal but an exquisite meal with an appetizer, main course and dessert. Well, I had “dry noodles” for breakfast today. Before I forget, let me remind you that I bought this pack of noodles for twice the amount I bought it early last year. I’m sure you don’t know what dry noodles is but not to worry, I will explain. Dry noodles is a type of noodles eaten without any trace of garnishing except the seasoning provided in the noodle pack. Do you know how broke you have to be to eat such a plain meal? I was going to sulk and throw the food out until I remembered the millions of Nigeria who must be filling their stomach with water right now just to reduce the impact of the hunger pangs.

You say you and your team are working tirelessly to make life better for us but how much longer do we have to endure? Quit asking us for more patience because we have completely lost faith in your government. You should not be surprised that majority of the people who voted for you in 2015 regret doing so today. What is the one single promise you made during your campaign that you have fulfilled?

Even the constant electricity we experienced during your first few months in office has more than worsened while we pay through our nose for darkness.

A lot of dailies have been reporting that the recession is over because the naira is starting to gain strength against the dollar. These are all theories and mathematical principles as far as I and millions of Nigerians are concerned.

If the recession is truly over, we want to feel the impact. We want to see the price of fuel go back to N65 per litre from the current N145 per litre or just return it to the N95 per litre you met it at. We want to see prices of food items come down. Do you know that before you became President, I could fly from Lagos to Abuja for just N15, 000 or less? Also, the current price of an economy ticket could get me a comfortable seat in business class as at 2015. We want to see the average entrepreneur have access to forex at a very affordable rate. You promised to make N1 equivalent to $1, we are still waiting for that magic sir.

Until we start to see all of these changes, Dear Mr President, I put it to you that the recession is nowhere near over.

Jobs/Vacancies / How To Work From Home Effectively by petra22(f): 1:29pm On Apr 21, 2017
Working from home can be very great as you get to save money and time commuting to an office. You also don’t have to worry about annoying co-workers or a boss breathing down your neck. Some stay-at-home moms who don’t want to be completely dependent pick up jobs they can conveniently do from their couch. Working from home is not only limited to women as there are a number of jobs and businesses anyone can do from home, such as e-marketing, software developing, graphic designing, freelance writing, IT and web services.

Some companies are even starting to imbibe a culture of working from home once a week in a bid to increase productivity. A study by Nicholas Bloom, cofounder of the Chinese travel website Ctrip, revealed that in comparison with the employees who came into the office, the at-home workers were not only happier and less likely to quit but also more productive.

As cool as working from home can be, it is easy to get distracted and inhibit efficiency. Here are ways you can be more effective and get more done:

1. Create A Work Schedule
Just like students have a study timetable, you need to draw up a work schedule that would contain a daily to-do list. Every task on your to-do list should be timed. This way, you have an actual working hours just like people who work from an office.

2. Have A Workspace
Kathleen Downs, a recruiting manager at Robert Half International tells Glassdoor, “You have to have a workplace, and it can’t be sitting in front of the T.V”. It is wise to invest in a workspace with a table, chair, computer and all your work tools. Basically, create an office in your house. This could be a little corner in your house or if you have enough space, you can convert one of the rooms in your house to a study.

3. Be Disciplined
It is so easy to get distracted when you work from the comfort of your house. You could get tempted to take a short nap, attend to the kids or even take a peek into the fridge for a little snacking. You need to discipline yourself so you don’t lose focus. If you are a mother, have someone look after your kids while you are working. Be sure not to attend to any work unrelated tasks while working.

Romance / Before You Date That Broke Guy by petra22(f): 10:37am On Dec 09, 2016
So you meet this handsome hunk, well - upcoming hunk seeing as he’ll actually need money to hire a good fitness trainer. He speaks well, very courteous, educated, God fearing, gives you attention and basically checks every box on your list except for one thing… Mister is broke as hell. The kind of broke that always borrows airtime from network providers and never pays back. The kind that would wait till the all the seats on the bus are filled up so he can stand and pay half the price. Those ones that see it as foolhardy to eat Cornflakes when there’s garri at home. Yeah, that kind of broke.

Now the reality of his financial situation murders all the fluttering butterflies in your tummy. You wonder if your friends getting married to rich, handsome and seemingly perfect men have two heads. Why won’t your village people just let you be. Then a little voice whispers into your ears:

You’re not a gold digger so you don’t need a man’s money.

No man is already made, help him grow and mold him into your ideal man.

Aren’t you a broke girl yourself, how dare you not want to date your fellow broke ass?

And so many other bull men have made up to make women feel bad about wanting the good things of life. Sadly, the little voice seems to be winning as you’re starting to consider dating this financially handicapped man. You tell yourself he’s better than nothing, finding a man is hard enough so you’ll just manage what you have.

Dear wife material,

Dear virtuous woman,

Dear man builder,

Before you date a broke guy, pause for a bit and consider these:

On a scale of 1-100, how patient are you? If your patience level is reading below 60, I advise you begin a prayer session asking God to saturate you in the spirit of patience cause you’ll be need a truck-load of it for this “romantic” journey you’re about to embark on. I believe situations can turn around at any time but you’ll need to be very patient with your boo to get his money right. You will also need patience and tolerance to deal with his jealousy, insecurities and even anger issues. It all comes with not having money.

Politics / On Peter Obi's Eye Opening Speech by petra22(f): 11:30am On Oct 04, 2016
Anambra state former governor, Peter Obi recently gave a speech at The Platform, an annual event organized by Covenant Christian Centre. First off, I am so mad at myself for missing this year’s event. Nothing in the world will make me miss it next year except I’m out of the country, in which case I will follow it up online.

If you are on social media, you must have come across this speech that went viral and has spurred a lot of conversations. It is one of the most candid speeches you’ll ever listen to. Meanwhile, go and search for the video on Youtube if you haven’t seen it. Peter Obi who spoke about cutting cost of governance in Nigeria, made me cringe at his analysis of how ridiculously expensive it is to run a government. I was actually surprised to see people laughing in the video. Peter has a great sense of humour, granted but he raised very salient points that I would have thought would make people go into deep thoughts about their nation but as usual everything is a joke to the average Nigerian.

This speech just makes Buhari’s ‘Change Begins with me’ mantra look like the scam it really is. Just as Peter rightly said, we cannot effect any change as a people with the kind of leaders we have. A good leader is supposed to do just that, LEAD! Buhari should show us how he is reducing government expenditure before telling the citizenry to cut back. No sir, change does not begin with me. You are my leader, show me what to do and I will follow suit. Practice what you preach sir.

Nigerians are good people but our biggest problem is the greedy, self-centered people we have in the seat of power. Inept leaders who see governance as a ‘Get-rich-quick’ scheme. Callous leaders whose feeding budget runs into billions of naira while the people they lead are unsure of their next meal. Politics is not a venture for intellectually lazy lots. It takes a lot of wisdom to rule a nation to greatness and employing the best of advisory team won’t cut it. A dull leader would reflect on its people. Ask yourself where we presently rank on WAEC performance and why JAMB’s cut off has been reduced from 200 to 180. I’d just leave that for you to mull over.

I must say that Peter Obi is a fine orator. It’s not about speaking English with the finest of diction and accents but knowing what you are saying and being highly informed. Unlike the average Nigerian politician, you could tell that his speech wasn’t rehearsed. He didn’t even read from a paper or use slides, yet he managed to quote figures and estimates of cost of governance accurately. This is an intelligent man who has gone to top notch schools around the world. Not only is he full of wisdom but he also has the people’s interest at heart. Indeed, Anambra state has experienced a lot of changes and development over the past few years. Whilst some state governors are still commissioning boreholes, Anambra state has an automobile factory, good road network, impressive academic performance and a number of worthy achievements. You should also know that Anambra state also has one of the highest internally generated revenue in Nigeria and it is not even the commercial nerve centre of the country. Truly, talk is cheap! Buhari and his team need to seek Peter’s wisdom to show them how to drag this nation out of the rot we are in, if pride and greed would let them.

Just as expected, this speech has incited a lot of comments clamouring for Peter Obi to be the next President. This man makes me proud of my state and country. But the question is; are Nigerians actually ready to set aside tribal sentiments and allow a qualified individual from the East lead this nation? 2019 is roughly two years away from now, let’s see if Nigerians still feel the same way about him then and are ready to support him like they gullibly did Buhari. My only hope is that Peter Obi doesn’t become another disaster if he eventually makes it to Aso rock.

Jobs/Vacancies / Surviving In Present Day Nigeria: For The Ex-corpers by petra22(f): 8:36am On May 09, 2016
The situation of things in the country right now has gotten to the level where normal human beings would have reacted by shutting down the economy, going on a nationwide strike or calling for the impeachment and resignation of inefficient government officials. But Nigerians being who we are would rather climb the wall when push comes to shove. We always find a way around every inhumane situation and hardship the country throws in our face. When life shows Nigerians pepper, we make goat meat pepper soup.
Just recently, the National Youth Service Corps passed out thousands of young men and women into the real world; the labour favour market. So before you begin this new phase of your life, here are some tips that would help you conquer the world regardless of whatever pepper Nigeria shows you.

1. Have a wardrobe of well-ironed shirts and corporate outfits: You need to have at least five neatly ironed shirts. I say five because that would take you through five working days. You shouldn’t wait till you are called for an interview on a very short notice before you start thinking of how to wash and iron your outfit because NEPA can decide to show you pepper at any time. Remember, your appearance speaks volume at an interview. And please, you’re no more in school so stop that rubbish of heating up your pressing iron on a camp gas. Always plan your outfits ahead and be ready at the drop of a hat.

2. Buy a power bank: Still on the light issue, power banks have become part of a typical Nigerian’s accessory. I have two power banks and I’m looking at getting a third one but a solar powered one this time around. As a job seeker, you need your mobile gadgets connected to the internet at all times so you can surf the net, apply for jobs, reply emails, read ebooks and so many other things that would most likely drain your battery. We live in the digital age and opportunities disappear as fast as they come. Do you know how many people have missed out on great opportunities all because they were offline when someone posted a vacancy with very limited slots? We live on the fast lane and it’s fastest fingers first.

3. Protect yourself from the sun: all my life in Lagos, I have never experienced this kind of heat going on now. I cannot begin to imagine how hot places like Abuja and other northern states will be like. Except you are fortunate enough to have a car, you will do a lot of trekking under the scotching sun while attending interviews or dropping your CV at various firms. I once trekked from Obalende to Civic Centre for an interview and I think it might be one of the root causes of my recurrent migraine. The sun is merciless but the hustle must continue. For the guys, you can reduce the effect of the sun on you by wearing short-sleeved shirts instead of long-sleeves. Knot your tie and keep it in your bag; wear it when you are close to the interview venue. If you choose to wear a long-sleeved shirt, please don’t wear your jacket while hopping buses, you can simply sling this across your shoulder and put it on when you get to your destination. For the ladies, wear more of smart looking chiffon shirts instead of corporate shirts. They are lighter and you won’t sweat as much. Corporate gowns would do just fine too. Also, invest in sunscreen to protect your skin from sun burns. There are lots of them in cosmetic stores. Then drink a lot of water to stay hydrated, whether you are a guy or a girl.

4. Use the BRT: This one is especially for Lagos residents. There are two BRT options in Lagos, there are the red mostly rickety looking ones and there are the blue fully air-conditioned ones. They are more affordable and comfortable than the nightmares called Danfo. Those guys are very notorious for hiking their bus fares at the slightest opportunity and with the current fuel scarcity and general inflation in the economy, they charge twice to thrice as much as their former rates. The BRTs on the other hand operate at a fixed rate and before they increase their fares (which they rarely do) seculars would have gone round and prior notice given to commuters. They also have a bus card which is cheaper to use in the long run. If you are in a hurry, ditch this option.

May all our hearts’ desires be fulfilled and I hope we all find our dream jobs.
Make your contributions, what are the other ways you think we can survive the harsh realities of our present day Nigeria?
