“Why are our budgets not being implemented? Why has the money in our excess crude account disappeared at a time when oil prices have been way above the benchmark used for our budget estimates? Why are our foreign reserves being depleted to dangerous levels leading to rating agencies downgrading our status? Why is this government quickly dragging us back to indebtedness after we worked so hard and sacrificed so much in the past to pull ourselves out of debt slavery.”
@Kobo

The reply from Jonathan's campaign team was simply also to refute his childish remarks and advice him to tread softly. Our ratings has not changed and the present budget has already been implemented by 70% as at now. Our foreign reserves is not depleted, current standing is at 33 billion dollars. Yar-Adua has already been borrowing money before goodluck became the president so what is he on about?.

Where has he been all these while, or is it after he became the consensus candidate that he knows about all these. He is a cheap hypocrite in my humble opinion and as for the depleted excess crude account. That account belongs to the governors and president so he should not even go there. Why can't he attack the governors as well?, or is it only goodluck that is spending the money?

During his time, did they not also touch the excess crude account? Where the banks healthy during their time? What does he know about the 100bn road construction budget?, The money we wasted to sort or power issues?. He can simply go and jump into the nearest lagoon.

@Kobo

Here is goodluck statement on facebook and i know it was directed at atiku for sure.

I was loyal to my leader, the late great President Umaru Yar'adua. I am loyal to Nigeria, I don't claim to represent North, South or a Committee-I represent Nigeria. I am loyal to Nigeria's economy, I don't have accounts or property abroad, ALL my children live and school in Nigeria. I am loyal to my wife and friends. , Can those who accuse me say the same? GEJ
He is simply reaffirming his loyalty to nigeria and to the unity of the country because what atiku and ciroma did there shows no loyalty to nigeria neither to its unity. As a candidate he believes in democracy, due and transparent process and not the one of atiku.

Atiku accused him of mismanaging the economy and he is simply refuting that by saying he is loyal to the economy. It was just a statement of showing his integrity when compared to atiku's and refuting the attack from atiku. There is simply no comment to deny here and as for link you posted i will dig in on that soon.

Ribadu cannot win a presidential election in nigeria, he should go and start from the house of reps, commissioner or deputy governor's position.
Politics › Re: I Got A Problem With The Southerners! by Pharoh: 4:25am On Nov 27, 2010
We just need two things for a start, education and exposure. With that everyone will start thinking for himself and taking decision independently. When the imam shouts death to southerners and Christians, the educated people like you i believe will not join them. The NYSC scheme was put out forth in place to foster this unity and teamwork but i must say i don't really think it has fulfilled those goals.

If we must stay together in peace and love, we have to revisit our past again, settle it and chart a way forward. One of our greatest problems has been the language barrier between the different tribes, i look forward to unity but if there is not we should go our separate ways. If truth must be told, i would prefer a breakup more than a unity because the present situation is scary and very negative.

Boboribo:
Typical of Nigerian politicians, I just heard on AIT that GEJ has distanced himself from the last facebook comment accusing his political oppobent (read Atiku). Well if it is true nothing of substance will ever be attached to his facebook comment and he should be advised to shut the page. Those who supported the comment should lick their a.s.s.e.s.
Why don't you post the last facebook comment here?, He was simply saying people should not mistake his last facebook comments as throwing muds at his opponents.

Did you realize that no specific name was mentioned in that comment?
Was he the one that came to AIT to deny the comment or is it the typical nigerian dem say dem say you are throwing here?
So Goodluck now has only one political opponent and where does that leave IBB, Gusua, Buhari and ribadu?

no one is even considering that Benitez has had to work with a depleted Inter side. Many key players are out injured e.g Cambiasso and he was a core member of the team that won the treble. Milito who in my opinion was the heart of the Inter team that won the treble only recently got back from and is still seriously lacking match fitness. Sneijder after a hectic season is not at his best. He even passed out in one the games and of course Waltes Samuel just joined the list. Would Mourinho have fared any better under this circumstance? I don't think so. Let's not forget that this Inter team only last season swept everything that was on offer and as such the hunger of last season is not really there anymore.
Anyway, one thing Benitez has achieved is that Inter are a more watchable side now. They pass the ball around, lots of flair in the side now. Inter were incredibly boring though very effective last season. He has brought in Bibiany and Coutinho into the side and those two have been like the biggest revelations in Europe this season
Your hatred for mourinho is very glaring, please let us try to put sentiments aside in this case. Inter only played defensively in few matches during the champions league and that's it. With all honesty the flow improved a little bit at first but is now worst than the time of mourinho, they now lack bite upfront. Please go and watch Milan vs inter again and see the so called free flowing football, inter was clear better under mourinho. Hope you are seeing the impact in rel Madrid. cool

Nairaland General › Re: The Twin Evils Of Federal Character And Zoning. by Pharoh: 4:38pm On Nov 23, 2010
The problem with zoning and federal character is in the implementation and since we cannot get it right we should look for an alternative.
It is the same like the 6-3-3-4 education system, some countries implemented it successfully why we have not hence our failures.
So let us improve it or do away with it, at best it should be clearly stated in the constitution or maybe we need another aburi accord.

I am very sure that the guy went into details and explained the expression which they whole heartedly copied ( Typical Naija na ) hence is fighting now. This is the same thing as having the idea of using a voting mechanism to change the president of a country, it is an idea you cannot copyright but the way you express it. Your expression could be by option A4 or open ballot system.
Politics › Re: Lagos Students Create A Fuel-less Power Generator! by Pharoh: 8:19pm On Nov 22, 2010
@Kobo

That's what i have been trying to let him know, does he want Macmillan to close shop?  We should look into multiple publishing licenses and set a price control mechanism in place that you cannot sell below or above a certain price. Make the incentive so low for piracy to be considered.

DapoBear:
Ah, that is the beauty of it. Generally the authors are professors, academics, not money-grubbing billionaires. They aren't out to make huge money here from their books. Moreover, they will not be dogmatic about extracting a pound of flesh for a calculus book that is ten years out of print. Like I said earlier, there is company called Dover Books that buys up the rights to out of print math books and resells them at very low costs. That is their entire business. If you think about it, a calculus book from the 80s is just as good content-wise as one printed now; the amount of advancement in very fundamental areas like that is very small. Yet Dover is able to sell you a reprint of the 80s calculus book for $8-15 bucks, versus paying $100 for a new calculus book written recently.

For a non-profit cause such as this, which aims to improve the education levels in Nigeria, it would not be very difficult to convince the professors and publishers to open-source such textbooks.
Now i am getting your point, it is a very good idea and i think it should be accessible to anyone and not the cheap printers. Let me ask you this, don't be offended please, i have also been away from Nigeria for a long time. How long have you been away from nigeria and what do you know about the reading culture?  When i was still there we have these mentality of only reading recommended textbooks and that is if you can even afford it. I am sorry but except for few or those who come from education oriented families, nigerians don't have the zeal to read anything that comes their way.

The mentality is to just read something and pass, the society does not reward handwork but the end result and it does not matter how it was done. I can speak for myself and walked kilometers to read in libraries and walk from ebute metta to lagos island, yaba and ojuelegba  to look for cheap textbooks and anything to be educated. But these mentality is not widespread, i was advocating for the recommended books and not just cheap access to books at first. It will do you good first to make the recommended books cheap before trying to shove other books in their face.

Trust me go to any secondary school in Nigeria and ask arts students how many novels they have read or commercial students how any different textbook they have read. Even the recommended one self na wahala, most are just inching towards examination malpractice at the end of the day.
Politics › Re: Lagos Students Create A Fuel-less Power Generator! by Pharoh: 7:51pm On Nov 22, 2010
DapoBear:
So think of this printer of fake books. Rather than using the colored scanner or even having to scan at all, he downloads this 3MB PDF onto his computer. So no time wasted manually scanning, no OCR issues, none of that. Just print and go. See what I'm saying? I've reduced the cost of the printing for the fake bookseller. So the book he is selling is not a low-quality scanner version, but (depending on the quality of his paper, ink and binding), a version just as good as the one sold by amazon.com.
Do you see how this helps drive down costs of books by not requiring him to bother scanning anything? And if I drive down the costs of his business (while increasing the quality of his product), then I help those who seek to purchase books for school.
To illustrate, you buy crappy version of the book from fake bookseller for $X. Now you buy a high-quality version of the book for $Y, with Y quite possibly being less than X.
Your point is well noted but the problem is the products or book does not belong to the fake re-distributor. The author and publisher also needs to get compensation for their works, if they do not make profits then what will be the incentive to write good books?.  My brother trust me some people still cannot afford the present cheap fake books and the quality is so bad.  I am on for a way of reaching 90% of the population at a cheaper price than reaching 20% at the current price. Most students do not have even these so called fake books because it is not cheap, these fake re-distributors should just obtain license rights to publish these books as well.

Phate07:
The idea, according to the journalist, originated from the him and so he should be compensated. But thats for the courts to decide.
Mbeki:
Some Nigerians and greediness, they simply sold his idea instead of sharing the proceed with him
You cannot have copyright to an idea but the expression of the idea. His idea was simply the engagement of university students in a quiz competition and that cannot be copyrighted.
Politics › Re: Lagos Students Create A Fuel-less Power Generator! by Pharoh: 7:23pm On Nov 22, 2010
DapoBear:
So your point is that if the book is available in some digital format to the bootleg publisher, this doesn't reduce his costs at all? What am I misunderstanding about the printing process that makes this true? Printers of fake books still use computers and some sort of digitial printing device, no? If I can provide him with a perfect, high-quality digital copy of the textbook used by the school system for the state, this doesn't reduce his costs of publishing at all?

Is this your point? Not trying to attack it, but just trying to understand it.
Printers of fake books i think normally use colored scanners and printers, i don't think any Nigerian textbook sold in Nigeria is in digital format. I am sure only those on sites like amazon you will find on digital formats. I think at the end of the day what you will create is just a cheaper product because those who do the fake business now will still print it in mass and sell at a cheaper rate than you printing yourself. A publisher i think will only make a digital copy of his or her works provided is profits are not eroded and how will you do that with this idea?. Amazon and other big digital book stores have DRM along with those books so they cannot be easily copied.
