Politics › 4 Killed In Zamfara Mayhem - Security Beefed Up In Jos(Christians On High Alert) by Pharoh(op): 10:08am On Dec 30, 2009
Meanwhile, following the outbreak of the crisis in Bauchi State and the rumour of an attempt to burn down some strategic churches in Plateau State, security has been beefed up in Jos, the state capital.

The state chapter of the Pentecostal Fellowship of Nigeria (PFN), at a press conference in Jos, on Monday, had alleged a plot by some terrorists to bomb churches and kill some pastors in the state.

Reacting to the rumour, the state Commissioner for Information and Communications, Mr. Greg Nyelong, assured the people of their safety, adding that the state government was not resting on its oars concerning security in the state.

The commissioner, who said all relevant security outfits in the state were alive to their responsibilities, warned that any attempt to disturb the prevailing peace in the state under any guise would not be tolerated by the government.

“The people of the state should go about their normal business without any fear, the government is on top of the situation and security of the state is of paramount importance to this administration,” he said.

The state Commissioner of Police who spoke to the Nigerian Tribune through the Police Public Relations Officer, ASP Mohammed Lerama, said since the PFN raised the alarm, the state police command had swung into action with the aim of ascertaining the veracity of the rumour.

According to him, the command was not treating the rumour with levity, because of the state of Jos and its environs, adding that the command had commenced full investigation into the matter.

Lerama added that men of the command had been deployed in all strategic parts of the Plateau State capital, especially the flashpoints, to nip in the bud, any attempt by any group or person to disturb the peace in the state.

In another development, no fewer than four people were killed when some Fulani cattle rearers unleashed terror on the small village of Mada in Gusau Local Government area of Zamfara State.

Speaking with newsmen in his office, the state Police Commissioner, Alhaji M.J Abubakar, disclosed that as a result of the attack by the Fulani cattle rearers, five of the Fulani people were arrested and “they are now in the custody of the police, giving useful information about their activities.”

Speaking on the mayhem, the police boss remarked that on Friday last week, a group of Fulani cattle rearers, numbering about 20, with over 1,500 cows, stormed the small village of Mada and as they were moving, they met a farmer in his farm with his wife and they gang-despoiled the wife.

“When the farmer tried to fight back, they killed him. A passer-by, who saw what happened challenged them and he was also killed. According to the police commissioner, “the news of the Fulani insurgence spread to the village and the villagers reported the incident to the local government chairman, who later reported the murder case to the police.”

He said, “immediately, we swung into action. We despatched a team of Mobile policemen to the scene with the instruction that they should be monitoring the movement of the Fulani people until they get to their destination.

“Around 3:00 a.m., the Fulani cattle rearers reached their destination and decided to spend the night, while my men also took cover just some few metres from the Fulani men.”

Commenting further, Alhaji Abubakar revealed that “the following morning, my men went to their camp and asked them who among them killed the two farmers.

Instead of giving an answer, they started attacking my men with bows and arrows, as well as shooting sporadically.” According to the police boss, “my men ran for cover and fired back” and in the process, they were able to kill two of the Fulani intruders, while the remaining Fulani men ran away, leaving their animals.”

The commissioner of police said the police were able to convey over 500 cows and camels to Gusau, the state capital, hoping that, the Fulani cattle rearers would show up.
