Ekiti State Governor, Mr Ayodele Fayose has told former President Olusegun Obasanjo stop deceiving the world with his anti-corruption posture, saying; “the former president is the father of corruption in Nigeria, who sits on stolen wealth.


He lacks moral rights to accuse anyone of corruption and I challenge him to explain to Nigerians the source of his stupendous wealth.”


Governor Fayose, who was reacting to comment credited to Obasanjo that African leaders should ensure that treasury looters are exposed and his warning of former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice Mohammed Adoke to stop mentioning his name in the controversial $1.09 billion Malabu Oil deal, said the former President should rather explain to Nigerians the source of his stupendous wealth.


In a release issued on Thursday, by his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, Governor Fayose said it smacked of the highest level of hypocrisy for someone like Obasanjo to be sermonising about corruption, having superintended over a corrupt government himself.


He said the former President must come out clean on his roles in the controversial $1.09 billion Malabu Oil deal, instead of warning former Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) and Minister of Justice Mohammed Adoke to stop mentioning his name in the deal, adding that; “It is on record that the out-of-court settlement on the controversial Malabu Oil Block was initiated in 2006 during Obasanjo’s administration.”


Governor Fayose, who maintained that Obasanjo’s accusing anyone of corruption was like “Oyenusi accusing Shina Rambo of armed robbery”, challenged the former President to explain to Nigerians the source of his stupendous wealth, saying; “We saw how Obasanjo was when he became president and the magnitude of both direct and indirect investments that he has now. Can he in all honesty tell Nigerians that he acquired his wealth through legitimate means?”


Describing Obasanjo as the fathers of corruption in the present day Nigeria, Governor Fayose said; “Even the National Assembly affirmed him (Obasanjo) as the grandfather of corruption in Nigeria and it is on record that it was this same Obasanjo, who is always claiming holier than thou that introduced politics of ghana-must-go bags to the National Assembly.


“Has Obasanjo forgotten how many billions of naira was deployed to lobby National Assembly members to support his third term agenda?”
“Has he forgotten so soon that it was during his tenure that sacks of money were displayed on the floor of the House of Representatives, as bribe money given to some Reps members to impeach the then Speaker, Ghali N’abba?
While reiterating his demand that the former President should refund with interest, the N10 million that he was forced alongside other governors to donate to his Presidential Library project, Governor Fayose said; “Someone like Obasanjo, who used his position as President to extort money from governors, businessmen and contractors to build his presidential library lacked more rights to accuse anyone of corruption.”


He said “other Nigerians who left offices as President are still relevant to their people, but can the same be said about Obasanjo? Was he useful to the Yoruba race as President and now as former President? The bad state that he left major roads linking the Southwest to other zones in Nigeria, especially the Lagos-Ibadan expressway remains a pointer to this.


Yet, he goes about postulating as if he is the only honest Nigerians who can make things right in the country.”

The Joint Admission and Matriculation Board (JAMB has clarified its position on candidates awaiting results being able to write admission examinations into tertiary institutions.


The examination body had initially barred candidates without their Ordinary Level results from sitting for the Universities Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME).


The board’s initial stand was based on the fact that many institutions have admitted candidates on merit only for them to discover that such candidates do not have qualified O’levels results or the right combination for admission.


Such schools had to delete and start the process all over again, thereby denying other qualified candidates the opportunities for admissions, JAMB said initially.


However, JAMB on Thursday said candidates awaiting results are eligible to register and sit for the UTME exams.
JAMB’s spokesman, Fabian Benjamin, who confirmed this to PREMIUM TIMES,
however said that any candidate who fails to upload their result between May and August, would not be confirmed to gain admission into any tertiary institution.


According to him, this would enable JAMB grant admission to only qualified candidates who are ready to advance their educational pursuit in tertiary institutions, conserve resources and also provide credible data.


“Nigerians are still not clear whether candidates with awaiting results will write our exams or not,” he said. “Today, we want to make it categorically clear that candidates with awaiting results are eligible to register and sit for our examinations.


However, the board will not confirm any admission for any candidate with awaiting result.
“All candidates who are desirous of tertiary education are to upload their O’ Level result on our site. We don’t want to be giving admissions to candidates that are not qualified to be admitted. It has been discovered over time that most of the times when these candidates are admitted, they don’t meet the requirements.


“You have from May up to August to upload your result. At the point of admission we would have sieved our records and any candidate who has not uploaded his or her result at that point, is not eligible for admission.


“We have a good number of candidates who have written their exams in years past and they have their results ready waiting for this process, we will factor those ones and the few ones that will get their results before August.


We are not working for those that will be writing their exams. But if by chance you write your O’ Level examinations and JAMB this year and your result is ready, good for you.”
He added that candidates, who are not computer literate, have a choice of applying for a UTME mock examination at a fee of N700 nationwide.


Mr. Benjamin explained that the UTME mock examination was optional and aimed at allowing students have a feel of the Computer Based Test (CBT), especially those ignorant of the CBT process.

The Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project has described as invalid, the confirmation processes leading to the rejection of Ibrahim Magu as Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission.


It asked the Federal Government to take reasonable measures to re-nominate him for confirmation.
“We also urge the Senate to carry out its duty to confirm Magu in line with constitutional and international requirements and without any political or ulterior considerations whatsoever,” SERAP said in a statement on Thursday by its executive director, Adetokunbo Mumuni.


The senate had for the second time rejected Magu as the EFCC boss after a confirmation hearing on Wednesday.
But SERAP said the rejection of Magu by the Senate on the basis of the two conflicting security reports on him, is a slap on Nigerians, the victims of corruption.


It asked the Senate to explain to Nigerians why it failed to invite the Department of State Services to clarify the two contradictory reports on Magu.
The group wondered why the senate chose to accept the least favourable of the report to reject Magu.


“The Senate must come clean and explain to Nigerians why it failed to invite the DSS to clarify its two reports or invite someone from the presidency to explain why Magu was re-nominated, and in fact to justify why it sent two reports in the first place,” it insisted.


SERAP said, “The rejection of Magu as Chairman of the EFCC by the Senate of Nigeria on the pretext of conflicting and inconsistent reports on him by the government of President Muhammadu Buhari, is a slap in the face of Nigerians who are victims of grand corruption.

“The entire process for the submission of Magu’s name for confirmation by the Senate, and the purported confirmation hearing by the Senate is utterly unsatisfactory.
“While it is true that the Senate has the right to either reject or accept the nomination of Magu as the Chairman of the EFCC, it has a constitutional duty to act reasonably, logically, and rationally.”


SERAP contended that the Senate ought to have critically engaged with the two reports by the DSS and provide Magu with a meaningful opportunity to be heard.


The statement added, “Rather than working together to promote and enhance the independence, integrity and effectiveness of the EFCC, both the presidency and the Senate would seem to have failed to pursue this legitimate governmental purpose and international requirement, and implicitly, constitutional measure.”


The group urged the President to demonstrate a genuine political will to fight corruption by urgently resolving the contradictions and inconsistencies in his presentation of Magu for confirmation by the Senate.

• Police prevent suspect from being lynched

Shock, followed by pandemonium and palpable fear, enveloped residents of White Sand area of Isheri-Oshun in Ejigbo area of Lagos State, following the murder of a three-year-old child, Chiagozie Okereke, by a Muslim cleric, Kazeem Alimson, popularly known as Alfa.


The incident, which was described by security operatives and neighbours in the area as ‘the most bizarre occurrence in the neighbourhood’ has sent shivers down the spines of residents.


One 15-year-old boy, Simon Kanu, confessed to have been paid N500 by the said Alfa in order to lure the baby, adding that the baby was killed with a heavy stone in his presence.


Explaining how the deceased, Chiagozie Okereke, got missing, his distraught mother, Mrs. Chinasa Okereke, said:
“Around 7:00p.m. yesterday (Tuesday), I brought my children out to bathe him.
“When I finished bathing the younger one, I went inside to get the wrapper to strap him in order to enable me bathe the other child.


But on getting outside, I didn’t see my baby again. The sister said he went into my neighbour’s house but I didn’t see him there and when I asked, they said he went out with Simon.


“I called my son’s name but there was no response. Later, we saw Simon that night, I asked him about the whereabouts of my son, he said he did not see him.


Simon took my son, strangled him with his shirt and stoned him to death. He is my third child. I feel hurt. My heart is broken. I need justice.”


The Isheri Osun Divisional Police Officer (DPO), Emeodi Camilus, a Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP), who got a tip-off, rushed to the scene and arrested the two suspects.


During interrogation, Simon confessed that he was given N500 to lure the missing child to where the Alfa was waiting for him.


He disclosed that the Alfa took him and the child to an uncompleted building where the boy was murdered with a heavy stone.
According to the primary six pupil, “I went to site and I saw how he killed Chigozie. He tied him up and was making incantation before hitting him with a stone three times.


He said he would kill me if I told anybody. He also showed me his juju knife and that he would use it to kill me if I told anyone.”
However, on his part, the cleric denied the allegation, claiming that he is not a ritualist but a cult member.He said: “I was in my house sleeping when I heard people shouting. When I came out, I saw some policemen and when I asked, I was told that they saw a dead child.


I went back inside, and 30 minutes later, the police came back and arrested me. I don’t know the boy and I have never spoken to him.”
At this point, the teenager interjected and said, “You are lying. He was giving me sign with his eyes not to talk. I saw you when you were using the stone to hit him until he died.”


When The Guardian visited the scene, hundreds of residents besieged Akogun Street, giving different versions of what happened. But for the police intervention, the angry residents would have summarily executed the Alfa in another incidence of jungle justice.


At the scene was the Divisional Police Officer of Isheri Oshun, who was on ground to pacify the crowd from taking laws into their own hands.He told The Guardian: “When the police became involved, I directed that all the persons involved be arrested, including the boy. It was after he was picked up that he confessed.


“He led us to the Alfa and we arrested him. We searched his house and the environs. We found the boy dead in the uncompleted building. He said they tied his hand and leg with red clothes and while muttering incantations, stoned the deceased three times before he died.

But for the intervention of the police, a popular Pentecostal cleric and his wife would have been kidnapped at Isheri Osun area of Lagos yesterday.


The Guardian learnt that gunmen in the early hours of Tuesday intercepted the bishop’s convoy and attempted to drag him off his vehicle.


They shot sporadically around 4:30a.m. before getting to the vehicle conveying the cleric and his wife.
Two of the gunmen were said to have come out from their operational Honda Salon car, opened his car door and started dragging him and his wife away.


However, policemen attached to the bishop were said to have engaged the criminals in a gun duel, which lasted several minutes.
As the fight lasted, the policemen called for reinforcement from Isheri Division, a development that forced the gunmen to flee into a nearby swamp, abandoning their operational vehicle.
Police Commissioner, Fatai Owoseni, confirmed the incident, adding that the victims were unhurt, while the gunmen fled with bullet injuries.


“What would have been a case of kidnapping/armed robbery was foiled as the bishop and his wife were rescued. We have since carried out raid on the area,” he said.


Owoseni also disclosed that the police on Monday recovered the body of a notorious kidnapper, Timi, alias Big Fish at Ishawo in Ikorodu.


The police boss stated that the deceased was killed by members of the Oodua People’s Congress (OPC) during an armed robbery operation.
He said: “We got a distress call that a group of armed robbers were operating at the area and we sent some policemen to the area.

When our men got there, they discovered that the local vigilance group there rose to the challenge and faced the hoodlums squarely.
“We found the body of the kingpin of the hoodlum. It was the killing of Timi Bigfish that made people say kidnappers have returned to Ishawo.”


The police boss, who paraded 24 suspected hoodlums, said the command also arrested 10 teenagers between the ages of 12 and 16 for school gangsterism. The students were arrested with cutlasses, axes and other dangerous weapons.
“We want to appeal to parents and school authorities to monitor their children to avoid raising criminals as students”.

Economic and Financial Crimes Commission EFCC) has uncovered N2 billion in the account of George Turner,
a former special adviser to erstwhile managing director of the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), Dan Abia.


Following the discovery, operatives of the EFCC arrested Turner in Port Harcourt, Rivers State in connection with alleged possession of funds running into N2 billion, suspected to be funds siphoned from the NDDC while serving there as an adviser.


Recall that Turner, served in the NDDC between 2012 and 2015.
EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, who confirmed the story, noted that preliminary investigations by the EFCC threw up deposits made in Turner’s personal and company bank accounts in excess of N2billion.


“A search conducted in his houses in Port Harcourt and Yenogoa, yielded useful documents,” he noted.


Turner has made useful statements to the EFCC and will be arraigned as soon as investigations are concluded.

The Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB has explained why it introduced mock examination in its plan of action preparatory to the 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination (UTME) scheduled for May 20, 2017.


The board said it was worried at the way some candidates, particularly those not conversant with computers, fail the exams, not because they were not studious enough but because they lack the basic knowledge of how the computer-based test (CBT) exam works.


JAMB spokesman, Dr. Fabian Benjamin, said the mock exam, though not compulsory, was meant to acquaint interested candidates with the new CBT exam adopted by JAMB a few years ago for the conduct of matriculation exams.


He encouraged candidates to take advantage of the window to familiarise themselves with the workings of CBT, to avoid unnecessary mistakes during the examination, which could affect their chances of securing admission.


“The board will mount a mock examination in all the accredited CBT centres, to prepare and familiarise interested candidates with the CBT environment. Interested candidates are advised to indicate their interest in the mock examination during the registration process.


“The CBT centres are allowed to collect through their CBT centre bank accounts, a separate N700 only for this exercise after notification of centre has been received by the candidate. The payment for mock examination shall be made to the centres to which the candidate is assigned after the notification of assigned centres for the mock examination,” he explained


The board also announced that it would sell the UTME application documents between March 20 and April 19, 2017.

“Upon purchase of the form, candidates would be issued with e-bronchure, video messages, e-syllabus and other easy and self-directory materials that would give candidates step-by-step guide for successful completion of the application form,” the board said.


While warning candidates against registering at centres other than JAMB-accredited CBT centres and state offices, the board maintained that not complying with guidelines would automatically disqualify candidates.

Nollywood actress, Mercy Johnson-Okojie, has been appointed as the Senior Special Assistant (SSA) to the Kogi State Governor Yahaya Bello, on entertainment, arts and culture.


The mother of three was appointed along with 53 other Senior Special Assistants to the governor into various offices in the administration.
A statement by the Secretary to the State Government, Dr Mrs Ayoade Folashade Arike, states that the appointments take effect from April 1.


According to the statement, the rationale for the additional appointees at the state level is to “plug identified gaps in service delivery, fill key positions with the right people and to broaden inclusiveness in governance by bringing people from more communities on board.”


Okojie made her acting debut in the movie, The Maid. To her credit, she has won several awards including the Best Actress (Africa Magic Viewers Choice Award), Best Actress (AMAA), Nigeria Entertainment Award, Golden Icons Academy Awards (GIAMA) and a host of others.

She represents Okehi Local Government Area in Bello’s list of SSAs.

The House of Representatives on Tuesday Called on the Federal Government to
urgently constitute a presidential task force to disarm all herdsmen in Buruku Federal Constituency,
other parts of Benue State and throughout the Federal republic of Nigeria.

This was contained in a motion jointly sponsored by the Benue State caucus in the House of Representatives.


Speaking on behalf of the lawmakers, the Chairman, Rules and Business, Orker Jev (APC), lamented that communities in Buruku local government area of Benue State, especially Binev Council ward, was invaded by “armed and strange herdsmen”.


“The herdsmen destroyed farms, plundered yam barns and looted houses deserted by innocent and armless villagers,” Mr. Orker said.


Mr. Orker said the marauding herdsmen started indiscriminate attacks and killings on Saturday around the communities of BerAwuna, Dogo, Ortese – Mbashian, Tse Igyu, Tse Gebe, Anbighir, Tse Iwa, Gbaikyo, Agudu, Nyorum,Shonto and Abuku in three major kindred of Mbade, Mbagoho, Mbashian, Mbaboor and Wuav of Benue State.


He further stated that the violent attacks continued unabated without any intervention from any security agency throughout that Saturday, and said 20 people were killed by the armed herdsmen, out of which 10 bodies have so far been recovered and deposited at the local government.


“We are worried that these strange herdsmen are heavily armed with sophisticated weapons, seem to be operating or supported by a killer squad of mercenaries that arrived the communities on Friday night on motorcycles and unleashed the mayhem the following day,” Mr Orker added.


The Binev Council ward lies on the Bank of River Katsina – Ala in Buruku local government area with mass water bodies and large portions of fadama lands suitable for rice farming and aquatic life.


Most residents of Buruku are farmers and fishermen.

The lawmakers urged the National Emergency management Agency (NEMA) to send food and relief materials to the affected communities.


The lawmakers also resolved to summon all heads of security agencies to brief the house on their efforts so far to curb the excesses of the herdsmen.

The deputy speaker, Yusuf Lasun, who presided, mandated the Committees on Special Duties and Police Affairs to ensure the implementation of the resolution.

But from what i know, a person suffering an illness which can paralyze their reflex action can do this if i'm not mistaken. You can also force to open your eyes like these crazy mythbusters. And yes, your eyes won't pop out because the optic muscles around the eyes are strong enough to hold it in place even if you sneeze out a 100mph of mucus/liquid/saliva from your mouth and nose. NUMBER 2 - Tickle Yourself I think this one is really impossible for anyone but maybe there are people who can tickle themselves that have not yet been documented. Well, the reason is because our brain can predict our own movement, hence canceling the tickling sensation whenever we're about to tickle ourselves. But from what i know, a person suffering an illness which can paralyze their reflex action can do this if i'm not mistaken.

I think this one is really impossible for anyone but maybe there are people who can tickle themselves that have not yet been documented.

But her desire to shine a light on what she described as corruption in French politics did not go well, as she was arrested by 30 riot police officers who had mistaken her for a radical feminist activist.

The potential presidential candidate stripped down and talked to LCI surrounded by her supporters.

She said: 'We are here to demand transparency when it comes to corruption, and this outfit justifies transparency

'I advocate the well-being of the individual in society, putting people at the centre of politics.'

As well as talking to the local press, she stopped motorists to hand out her manifesto, which includes pumping money into projects to help residents enjoy a more fulfilled sex life.

Her effort to gain support was cut short just as she was getting into the groove of her campaigning when 30 riot police officers led her away.



They wrongly thought she was associated to the Femen movement, which regularly holds topless protest against the exploitation of women that invariably result in those taking part being detained.

Although Lee is an official candidate of her party, it seems unlikely she will challenge Marine Le Pen, Emmanuel Macron or Francois Fillon for the leadership.

In order for a candidate to be considered for the ballot paper, 500 elected French officials need to sponsor them.

So far, a week before the cut-off point, Lee has not managed one.

The former stripper has made a name for herself in the past for similar scantily-clad protests.

The first round of the 2017 French presidential election will be held on April 23.

If no candidate wins a majority, a second vote will be help between the top two prospective presidents on May 7.

In the latest FIFA Rankings released on Thursday, Africa power house, Nigeria, retained positions in Africa and World which are 7th and 41st respectively. The ten best teams in the world retained their positions while in Africa, Egypt moved three places to be come the 20th best team in the world as against 23rd from the last rankings. Other movers were Senegal who also moved three places from 31st to 28th, Cameroon moved from 33rd to 32nd, Burkina Faso from 38th to 36th making them the fourth best team in Africa and Ghana from 45th to 43rd.
Algeria that was the best team in Africa not too long ago and among the favorites to win the AFCON title now occupy the 11th position in Africa and 50th in the world.

The Bauchi State government has signed into law a bill that approves death penalty or life imprisonment for kidnapping.
Speaking before newsmen, the state Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice, Mr. Ibrahim Umar, said a bill for the provision of free emergency treatment to accident victims within 24 hours of occurrence has also been signed into law.
“Whoever is guilty of the offence of kidnapping shall be punished with life imprisonment.
“If the victim dies as a result of the kidnapping, the offender shall be punished with death.
“Any government hospital that fails to accept an accident victim shall have its officers on duty that day punished according to civil service rules, including reduction in rank “The law applies to all accidents including domestic fire, industrial fire, plane crash, flood disaster, snake bite, dog bite, rainstorm, bomb blasts and gunshot,” he said.

A human skull dealer, Mr. Saheed Musiliu, 37, has been sentenced to six years imprisonment with hard labour.
The judgement was delivered at the Magistrate Court 1 sitting in Iyaganku, Oyo State, presided over by the Chief magistrate, Mrs. Durosaro Tijani. It will be called that Musiliu was caught with one human skull on January 15th, 2017 and later arraigned in court eight days later after investigation by the police.
The accused was arraigned in a case with suit no: MI/88/2017 on a two-count charge bothering on unlawful possession of human skull.
The accussed pleaded guilty to the charges but prayed the court to show him mercy. The trial magistrate had adjourned the case on January 23, 2017 as a result of the failure of the prosecutors to present the exhibits and evidences in court.
At the resumed hearing on Monday, the prosecutor, Inspector Amos Adewale told the court that on the 15th day of January, 2017 at about 1:30am at Onibuke Zone 1, Aba Alfa Area of Olomi Ibadan in the Ibadan Magisterial District, the accused did unlawfully had in his possession a human skull which investigation confirmed to be the head of the corpse of one Tajudeen Akanbi, which he had interfered with where the deceased was interned.
The deceased was said to be 62years old as at the time of his death According to the prosecutor who presented the skull as one of the four exhibits in court, the offences contravened sections 329A and 242(1)(b), Criminal Code Cap 38, Vol. II, Laws of Oyo State of Nigeria 2000.

It is very important to discuss your desires and intentions for childbearing with your health care provider before the woman becomes pregnant. Your provider can help with decisions about how to conceive safely (if your provider is not familiar with reproductive issues for HIV-positive persons, ask to see an HIV specialist). That will help to ensure the woman (if she is HIV infected) is on HIV medications (ARVs) that are effective and appropriate for pregnancy. Also, her provider can advise her on other important ways to protect her health before pregnancy. If you are an HIV-positive woman and your male partner is HIV negative There are "low-tech" and "high- tech" approaches. A safe and "low- tech" method is to do home insemination using your partner's semen and a needleless syringe, timed with your ovulation. By this method, your partner has no possible exposure to HIV. A more "high-tech" version of this approach is to use either intracervical or intrauterine insemination. For this, you would need the assistance of a fertility clinic. The Four Horsemen—Who Are They? The four horsemen may seem mysterious and terrifying, but that does not have to be the case. Why not? Because the Bible and the events of modern history help us to identify clearly what each horseman pictures. And although their ride has signaled calamity on earth, it can also mean good news for you and your family. How so? First, let us determine the identity of each horseman. THE RIDER OF THE WHITE HORSE The vision begins this way: “I saw, and look! a white horse, and the one seated on it had a bow; and a crown was given him, and he went out conquering and to complete his conquest.”— Revelation 6:2. Who is the rider of the white horse? The key to his identity is found in the same Bible book, Revelation, which later identifies this heavenly rider as “ The Word of God.” (Revelation 19:11-13) That title, The Word, belongs to Jesus Christ, for he acts as God’s spokesman. ( John 1:1, 14) In addition, he is called “King of kings and Lord of lords” and is described as “Faithful and True.” ( Revelation 19:16) Clearly, he has authority to act as a warrior-king, and he does not wield his power in any corrupt or abusive way. Yet, some questions arise. Who gives Jesus the authority to conquer? ( Revelation 6:2) The prophet Daniel saw a vision in which the Messiah, likened to “a son of man,” was given “rulership, honor, and a kingdom” by none other than “the Ancient of Days,” Jehovah God. * (Daniel 7:13, 14) Thus, it is Almighty God who grants Jesus the power and right to rule and execute judgment. The white horse is an appropriate symbol for warfare justly carried out by God’s Son, for the Scriptures often use the color white to symbolize righteousness. — Revelation 3:4; 7:9, 13, 14. When did the horsemen begin their ride? Note that the first rider, Jesus, begins his ride when he receives a crown. ( Revelation 6:2) When was Jesus crowned as King in heaven? It was not when he returned to heaven after his death. The Bible shows that a period of waiting began back then. ( Hebrews 10:12, 13) Jesus gave his followers a means of recognizing the end of that waiting period and the beginning of his reign in heaven. He said that at the beginning of his rule, world conditions would take a decisive turn for the worse. There would be warfare, food shortages, and pestilences. ( Matthew 24:3, 7; Luke 21:10, 11) Soon after World War I broke out in 1914, it became apparent that mankind had entered that era, a troubled time on earth that the Bible calls “the last days.” — 2 Timothy 3:1-5. But why have we seen conditions that are worse, not better, since Jesus received his crown in 1914? Because at that time, Jesus began ruling in heaven, not on earth. War then broke out in heaven, and the newly installed King, Jesus, referred to as Michael, cast Satan and his demons to the earth. ( Revelation 12:7-9, 12) Confined here, Satan has been full of rage ever since, knowing that his days are numbered. Indeed, it will not be long before God will carry out his will against Satan here on the earth. ( Matthew 6:10) Now, let us see how the other three horsemen help to confirm that we are, in fact, living during the troubled “last days.” Unlike the first horseman, who clearly pictures a specific individual, the three that follow represent global conditions that have swept across human society. THE RIDER OF THE RED HORSE “Another came out, a fiery-colored horse, and it was granted to the one seated on it to take peace away from the earth so that they should slaughter one another, and he was given a great sword.”— Revelation 6:4. This rider represents warfare. Notice that he takes peace away from not just a few nations but the whole earth. In 1914, for the first time in history, a global war erupted. It was followed by a second world war, which was even more destructive. Some estimates place the total number of deaths due to wars and armed conflicts since 1914 at more than 100 million! In addition, vast numbers of other individuals suffered debilitating injuries. To what extent does warfare characterize the present time? For the first time in history, mankind appears to have the ability to extinguish all human life. Even so- called peacekeeping organizations, such as the United Nations, have not been able to stop the rider of the red horse. THE RIDER OF THE BLACK HORSE “I saw, and look! a black horse, and the one seated on it had a pair of scales in his hand. I heard what sounded like a voice in the midst of the four living creatures say: ‘A quart of wheat for a denarius and three quarts of barley for a denarius; and do not harm the olive oil and the wine.’”— Revelation 6:5, 6. This rider represents famine. We find here a picture of food rationing so severe that a quart (1.08 L) of wheat would cost one denarius, a whole day’s wage in the first century! ( Matthew 20:2) The same coin could purchase three quarts (3.24 L) of barley, a grain viewed as inferior to wheat. How far would that go to feed a large family? People are then warned to be frugal even with daily foodstuffs, aptly pictured by such basic staples of that time and culture as olive oil and wine. Since 1914, have we seen evidence that this rider of the black horse has been on the move? Yes! About 70 million people died in famines during the 20th century. One authority estimated that “805 million people—about one in nine of the world’s population— were chronically undernourished in 2012-14.” Another report states: “Hunger kills more people every year than AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis combined.” In spite of many earnest efforts to feed the hungry, the rider of the black horse continues to ride. THE RIDER OF THE PALE HORSE “I saw, and look! a pale horse, and the one seated on it had the name Death. And the Grave was closely following him. And authority was given them over the fourth part of the earth, to kill with a long sword and with food shortage and with deadly plague and by the wild beasts of the earth.”— Revelation 6:8. The fourth rider represents death due to plague and other causes. Soon after 1914, the Spanish flu killed tens of millions.
