PoliticsBenue Assembly Orders IG To Arrest Fulani Herders’ Leadership by philpwresh(op): 5:03am On Jun 02, 2017
The Benue State House of Assembly has called on the Inspector General of Police (IG), Ibrahim Idris, to immediately effect the arrest of the leadership of the cattle breeders under the aegis of Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore for treason and inciting publicity unrest in the state.

The Speaker of the assembly, Mr. Terkimbi Ikyange, gave the ruling after a debate on a motion of urgent public importance moved by the Majority Leader, Benjamin Adanyi, who drew the attention of the assemly to the uncomplimentary remarks made by the leadership of the Miyetti Allah Kautal Hore during a media conference.

Adanyi explained that their comments amounted to treasonable felony, saying it has become clear that the attack on Benue communities is not as a result of quest for grazing but an agitation to takeover the state.

The National President of the Association, Alhaji Abdullahi Bello. and Secretary, Mr. Saleh Alhassan, last Tuesday, addressed a world press conference in Abuja where they did not only kick against the Anti Open Grazing Law recently enacted in the state but vowed to mobilise their members nationwide to resist the implementation of the law.

The group also erroneously attributed the herdsmen-farmers crises in the state to the struggle for natural resources and laid claim to be the real inhabitants of the Benue valley.

Ikyange equally mandated the state Governor, Samuel Ortom, to lead a high-powered delegation comprising all the senators and members of the House of Representatives from the state, the Speaker of the state assembly and other prominent indigenes of the state to meet President Muhammadu Buhari to brief him on the grievances of the state as contained in the publication.

The assembly also condemned the spurious allegations and threats made by the leadership of the Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders, describing it as capable of breaching the peace in the state.

According to the Speaker, the assembly will support the state governor to fully implement the Open Grazing Prohibition Law, saying the law is aimed at protecting both farmers and herders contrary to the allegations of the leadership of the cattle breeders.

The assembly called on the people of the state to remain calm and law abiding in the face of this provocative outburst of the Fulani Cattle Breeders Association as government would not fold its arms and watch a Fulani association intimidate and harass them in any way.

All those who contributed to the debate included Mr. Ianna Jato, Mrs. Ngunan Addingi, Mr. Avine Agbom, Mr. Richard Ujege, Adam Okloho, among others, described the utterances by the Miyetti leadership as an attempt to re-write history with a deliberate attempt to mislead the public and insult the sensibilities of Benue people.

EducationJAMB Releases Over 1.6m UTME Results, Seizes 80,000 Others by philpwresh(op): 4:24am On Jun 01, 2017
The Joint Admissions and Matriculations Board (JAMB) has released the results of over 1.6 million out of the over 1.7 million candidates who sat for the recently concluded 2017 Unified Tertiary Matriculations Examination UTME).

The Registrar and Chief Executive of JAMB, Prof. Is-haq Oloyede, disclosed this wednesday at a press briefing in Abuja.

Oloyede also disclosed that the results of over 80,000 candidates were withheld for various reasons, especially suspected examination malpractices.

He also said there were about 3, 811 candidates who registered late for the examination with findings revealing that more than half of then had earlier registered.
Oloyede noted that the results were released within the 24 hours of each examination in compliance with their promise to deliver the results in a timely manner.

He said: “So far, we have released 1,606,901 results leaving us with a balance of 80,889 and out of which we have deliberately withheld 76,123 because of examination malpractices.

“Let me say that we released the results within 24 hours but if it is left for me I would have withheld the result until we clear all outstanding issues.”
According to him, the results were released to prove to those who doubt their capacity that it could be done within 24 hours.

“However, I want to announce to you ahead of time that if I am in charge by next year, I will not release the results immediately until all the issues are resolved,” he stressed.
Speaking further, the JAMB boss said they would ensure that all candidates whose results were withheld after verifications are released before the next academic session.

Oloyede lamented the widespread examination malpractices across the country aided by parents, teachers and Computer Based Aptitude Test (CBT) centres.
He disclosed that some of the CBT centres exploited the candidates by deliberately distorting their data so that they can come back to pay extra money for corrections.
JAMB also disclosed of connivance between parents, teachers and managers of the CBT centres to engage in cheating.

Oloyede noted: “As at today, 640 candidates out of over 1.7 million candidates could not do their biometric verification and we told you what happened about registration distortion by these registration centres. In Abuja, a principal collected N8,000 each from their students to effect their registration but did not obtain their biometrics.
To this end, Oloyede has threatened to severe cooperation with over 600 CBT centres across the country, most of which are privately owned.

He also denied the report that over 10,000 candidates were implicated for examination malpractice in Anambra State, saying the state coordinator was misquoted.

“Mrs. Aja-Nwachukwu was misquoted by the journalist. She said only 10 candidates were implicated but the journalist wrote 10,000,” he clarified.

PoliticsWhy I Don't Want My Children To Be Politicians - Ahmed Makarfi by philpwresh(op): 12:09pm On May 13, 2017
Ahmed Makarfi, Caretaker Chairman, of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has disclosed that he would not like to see his children get active in politics.

“They should take interest in it, but not to participate,” the former governor of Kaduna State said.

According to him, many people think all politicians made money from politics and he would not want that kind of perception for his children.

“If they want to be active politically, they should first of all grow up to be something in their own right, otherwise people would say ‘oh, you took public fund, everything he has is public.’

“But when you’re your own person, people would know that you did not come into office as a pauper”, he told Daily Trust.

“Sometimes people don’t remember that some people were people of meat before they found themselves in public office, and just think whatever is around a person is taken from public office.

He said his children are far more ambitious than him on the side of entrepreneurship, “But I can also see a bit of interest in political issues, from their comments. If they talk to me sometimes, they say if we can’t get it done, they would make it done when it’s their time they which is good.”

“It is good for those growing up to be active observers, not passive ones. They should begin to develop ideas on how we can take this country to greater heights”.

On his rumored presidential ambition in 2019, Makarfi said “Everybody has ambition. But I’m not that kind of super-ambitious person.

“What I want is good for Nigeria. Any way I can contribute to moving Nigeria forward, I don’t have to be elected or appointed, I’m satisfied to contribute towards achieving that. When I look at my primary schoolmates and look at myself, if I don’t thank God for what he has done for me, I would be an ingrate.

”There’re many potentials in Nigeria, in the North. But I’ve a thing that bothers me, and it’s more or less in the North.

Successors and predecessors don’t see eye-to-eye; this is what obtains generally in the North.

”Take it at governmental level and in spite of whatever political difference, which state in the South where a serving governor is going after his predecessor! But come to the North, there’re only few states where these things are not happening.

SportsChelsea EPL Win: Nigerian Fan Names New-born Child Antonio Moses by philpwresh(op): 11:54am On May 13, 2017
A die-hard Chelsea Football Club (FC) of England fan in Abakaliki, has named his newly-delivered baby-boy Antonio Moses, in the wake’s of the club’s league title win on Friday.

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Chelsea on Friday night beat West Bromwich Albion 1-0 at the latter’s home-ground, Hawthorns to win the league title with two matches to spare.

The fan, Mathew Irondu, a Construction Engineer, told NAN on Saturday that he named the boy, born last Thursday after the club’s Coach Antonio Conte and Nigerian star, Victor Moses as his own way of celebrating the win.

According to him, the duo among other Chelsea players, were instrumental to the club’s stunning league success as the naming would eternally remind him of the title win.

“This win is most significant for me because it is the first by Chelsea since I switched my supporter ship to the club from Arsenal FC.

“I had endured years of EPL drought from Arsenal which made switch to Chelsea and I celebrated it this way because I don’t have money to make merriment.

“This is my first child and I fervently pray that his birth, a day before Chelsea’s league win, will bring good tidings to my family, the club and their fans across the globe,” he said.
He attributed the feat to hard work, dedication, commitment, tactical acumen of Coach Antonio Conte and impeccable support of Owner Roman Abramovich and fans across the globe.

“The club was desirous to erase the memory of the preceding season, its worst in recent times where it finished an abysmal 10th position on the league standings.
“The recruitment of Conte was the Midas Touch needed to achieve the desired turnaround as he used almost the same players who under-performed in the preceding season to achieve the feat ,” he said.

Irondu remarked that the coach displayed his managerial acumen by correcting the team’s deficiencies and subsequently made the players world-beaters.

“He stuck to the players who were involved in the club’s pre-season tours despite the accompanying criticisms and this affected established players such as Nigeria’s Mikel Obi and skipper John Terry.

“He also showed his tactical master-stroke by adopting an unusual 3-5-2 formation after the club’s humiliating losses to arch-rivals Liverpool and Arsenal.

“This tactical formation awed the entire EPL fraternity as clubs battled to grapple with the speed and agility of his wing-backs while the midfielders mesmerized teams with deft touches and passes to prolific attackers.

“The result was that the club’s demolition of other teams knew no home and away boundaries coupled with a-seven and intermittent four-points lead over its closest rival, Tottenham Hotspurs FC.
“This resulted in an ultimate triumph with two games to spare, the unearthing of hitherto unheralded talents such as Marcos Alonso, EPL player of the year, Ngolo Kante, among others, including a berth in FA cup final,” he said.

He advised the players not to be swayed by the euphoria of the win but redouble their efforts to win the season’s double with the FA cup and improved performances next season.

“Victor Moses should also replicate his all-season splendid form for the Super Eagles especially in the crucial AFCON 2019 qualifier against South Africa and World Cup qualifiers against Cameroon,” he said.

PoliticsOsinbajo Is Fully In Charge – Lai Mohammed by philpwresh(op): 8:27am On May 11, 2017
A day after the Senate rejected President Muhammadu Buhari’s naming of Prof. Yemi Osinbajo as Coordinating Vice President, the Information Minster, Alhaji Lai Mohammed, has confirmed that Osinbajo is fully in charge of the country’s affairs as the Acting President.

The Senate had on Tuesday turned down the request of Buhari that Osinbajo should operate as Coordinating Vice President while he is away in London for medical vacation.
The Upper House insisted that Section 145 of the 1999 Constitution (as amended) was very clear on the status of the Vice President once the Presi
dent transmits to the National Assembly that he would be unable to perform the functions of his office for any reason.
Consequently, the Senate affirmed Osinbajo as Acting President and overruled Buhari on the matter.

But reacting to the development on Wednesday after the weekly Federal Executive Council (FEC), Mohammed described the uproar in the Senate over Buhari’s letter as a “needless distraction.”
Buhari’s letter stated: “In compliance with Section 145 (1) of the 1999 Constitution (as amended), I wish to inform the distinguished Senate that I will be away for a scheduled medical follow-up with my doctors in London. The length of my stay will be determined by the doctor’s advice.

“While I am away, the Vice President will coordinate the activities of the government.”
The wording in the letter was remarkably different from his previous letters in similar circumstances in which he expressly stated that Osinbajo would be Acting President in his stead.

The controversy over this second letter started when it was read out in the Senateon Tuesday but Senate President Bukola Saraki overruled any contrary interpretation, declaring that Osinbajo is Acting President and not coordinator of government activities as insinuated.
Asked by State House correspondents to clear the air over the matter on Wednesday, after the Council meeting which Osinbajo chaired, Mohammed said that the controversy was unnecessary.
He stressed that the import of the section of the Constitution which was cited in the letter was clear enough to convey the message that “Osinbajo is in charge while Buhari is away.”
According to Mohammed, ”It is a needless controversy; it’s just a distraction. The operative sentence is that ‘in compliance of Section 145, sub-section (1)’. So, any other word used is not relevant.”

CrimeOsun Court Sentences 4 To Death For Stealing Okada. by philpwresh(op): 1:55pm On Apr 25, 2017
The convicts, Joseph Moses, 24, Samuel Job, 19, Gideon Ode, 25, and Daniel Abraham, 24, were brought to the court on a four-count charge of armed robbery and conspiracy.

The prosecutor, Mrs Abdulrahman Temitope, had told the court that the convicts committed the offence on October 14, 2013 at about 8:00pm along Kajola expressway in Osogbo.

Temitope said the convicts conspired among themselves to rob one Abubakar Rauf of his motorcycle with registration number BDG 896 QB.

”The suspects conspired to attack the complainant with a knife and dangerous weapons collecting his motorcycle.

”They injured the complainant and also carted away his Bajaj motorcycle to their house before they were apprehended,” the prosecutor said.

Temitope said the crime committed had been a serial occurrence within the vicinity which had led to the death and missing of some persons.
The prosecutor said the offences contravened Section 6 and is punishable under section 1 of the Robbery and Fire Arm (Special Provision) Cap R11, Laws of the Federation of Nigeria, 2004.

Counsel to the accused, Mr Jimmy Jones, however, pleaded with the judge to temper justice with mercy in her judgment.

Delivering judgment, Justice Olubunmi Ayoola, sentenced the convicts to death due to the magnitude of their crime, adding that the prosecutor had proved her case beyond any reasonable doubt.

PoliticsJUST IN: Expelled Punch Reporter Recalled To Aso Villa. by philpwresh(op): 7:44am On Apr 25, 2017
The State House correspondent of Punch Newspaper, Lekan Adetayo, who was earlier expelled from the Aso Rock Villa by the Chief Security Officer, CSO, to President Muhammadu Buhari, has been recalled.

The recall was sequel to a clearance given to the spokespersons of the president, Femi Adesina and Garba Shehu, by the Director General of the State Security Service, SSS, Lawal Daura.
This was revealed by Mr. Shehu in a mail he sent to the chairman of the State House Press Corps, Ubale Musa, late on Monday.

“We just got a clearance from Malam Lawal Daura, the DG SSS to recall Lekan to the Villa.
“Please come along with him tomorrow. The Special Adviser on Media, Femi Adesina and I will resolve the issues,” Mr. Shehu said in the mail.

The presidential spokesperson also advised correspondents covering the Villa “to handle this with maturity. It will not help anyone to start daring the security. Lekan should be assured that he is safe. We will straighten out everything.”

Mr. Adetayo’s expulsion is believed to be over a story his paper published on Sunday about the state of health of the President.

Shortly after the expulsion, Mr. Adesina had tweeted that the media office was not consulted before the decision was taken.
He also expressed the commitment of Mr. Buhari not to temper with press freedom.

PoliticsBuhari Operating As Ceremonial And Part-time President – Fayose by philpwresh(op): 7:50pm On Apr 23, 2017
The Governor of Ekiti, Ayodele Fayose, says President Muhammadu Buhari has now become a part-time and ceremonial President who is only seen during theFridayJumat service at the Presidential Villa.

Speaking on Sunday, through his Special Assistant on Public Communications and New Media, Lere Olayinka, the governor said it was necessary for Nigerians to be properly informed about the well-being of their President.

Fayose, who said Buhari, like any old man, was susceptible to illness, said the President would do well to go and take proper care of his health and allow the Vice-President, Yemi Osinbajo, to constitutionally act as the President.
“But it is doubtful if those cabals that are obviously running their own Presidency within President Buhari’s Presidency will allow him to take a long vacation, probably outside Nigeria to take care of himself,” Fayose said.

He accused some close allies of the President of deliberately shielding him and preventing him from attending to his health so as to continue to run the government on the basis of “Mr President has directed” even when the President did not direct anything.

He said, “That’s why Nigerians are told every day that the President said this and that with the President neither speaking directly nor attending any official function. This is not good for the image of a country like Nigeria that is struggling to get out of economic recession.”

Fayose insisted that Nigerians must hear the voice of their President and see him physically, not through surrogates or the cabal operating behind the scene.
“It is only when the President is seen and heard physically that Nigerians will believe that they are not being ruled by a part-time and ceremonial President, whose powers are being exercised on his behalf by some cabal,” he said.

PoliticsTop Nigerian Politician In Trouble As EFCC Uncovers N6billion In Bank Accounts by philpwresh(op): 3:05pm On Apr 21, 2017
The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission is considering declaring a former Commissioner of Local Government in Niger State, Kantigi Liman, wanted after a further N2billion was traced to his United Bank for Africa account by the agency.

An EFCC insider told PREMIUM TIMES the discovery brings to N6 billion funds traced to accounts held by the politician and companies linked to him.

The Commission had weeks earlier traced N4billion to two accounts in GTBank, both linked to Mr. Liman.

The first account belongs to Sadiq Air Travel Agency Limited and the second to Kantigi.
Sources at the Commission however disclosed that the politician, who was a governorship aspirant of the Peoples Democratic Party in the 2015 election, has been elusive.

“He is on the run and all efforts to track him down have been futile. The next option left for the Commission is to declare him wanted,” the source said.

The source further disclosed that investigations so far indicated the funds were siphoned from the local government joint account of Niger State.

“The Commission desperately wants Liman, to confront him with the available evidence,” the source said. “He is believed to rake in a monthly interest of over N33million on the fixed deposits.”

Mr. Liman could not be reached for comments Friday morning.
When contacted, EFCC spokesperson, Wilson Uwujaren, confirmed Mr. Liman was being investigated.

“It is an ongoing investigation so I am not able to provide details at this time,” he said.

PoliticsBuhari’s Success Claims, An Insult To Intelligence Of Nigerians --PDP by philpwresh(op): 6:25am On Apr 17, 2017
The Ahmed Makarfi-led National Caretaker Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has described President Muhammadu Buhari’s claims in his Easter message, to having met the expectations of Nigerians as an insult on their intelligence.

Its spokesman, Dayo Adeyeye, yesterday said the comments from Mr. President are to say the least untrue and unfair to Nigerians, who have been at the receiving end of his government’s mismanagement in the last two years.

On the war against Boko Haram, Adeyeye reiterated that the armaments procured by former President Goodluck Jonathan are what are still being used to prosecute the war.

Adeyeye added that current administration has also abused the Presidential Initiative for the North East (PINE) created by Jonathan, which covered all sectors in the rehabilitation efforts for the zone with comprehensive project cost and partnership.

“PINE under the APC’s watch has been a monumental disaster with allegations of contract scams while the internally displaced persons (IDPs) endure daily hardship and starvation. Tragically, we are yet to see the outcome of the investigation on the Nigeria’s fighter jet bombing of the IDP Camp in Borno State killing more than 200 persons.

On the war against corruption, the party’s spokesman, said like other policies and programmes of the APC administration, it has failed as well. He said: “The entire anti-corruption war of the APC since inception is just in the media with only one conviction. Many of the cases in the courts have been set aside and suspects discharged and acquitted while others are in the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Department of State Services (DSS) detention centres without trial, in violation of their fundamental human rights as enshrined in the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

The Makarfi-led PDP insisted that the recession we are experiencing today is as a result of the failure of the APC-led administration to properly manage our economy.

“The Buhari government is indeed clueless and had no economic plan until March 2017 when it launched the so called ‘recovery plan.’
The economy is at a standstill.

Major infrastructural developments that began with the previous administrations of the PDP have been abandoned. Power generation has dwindled from over 5,000mw in 2015 to the present all time low of less than 2,000mw. The only project of note this government has ever commissioned is the Abuja- Kaduna railroad, which was 99 percent completed by the PDP administration.

PoliticsNigerians Are Hungry Because They Are Lazy – Sultan by philpwresh(op): 5:20am On Apr 17, 2017
The Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Sa’ad Abubakar III, yesterday, attributed the current economic recession and hunger to laziness of leaders and the people.

The Sultan made the remark during the 22nd National Ummah Convention in Sokoto.
The convention which has as its theme: “Agriculture: Panacea to Nigeria’s Economic Recession”, was aimed at addressing the cognate issues of hunger in the country.

“Much is needed from the government and the general public to tackle hunger, as our laziness could not aid our progress.

“Yes, there is hunger in the country, but we have been so much lazy to tackle the issue, as we always depend on government and other wealthy individuals to assist us.

“Moreover, no one could solve our own problems, but we should improve more on agriculture, in order to tackle them and yield a better society,” Abubakar said.

Governor Aminu Tambuwal thanked the organisers of the convention and commended them for their consistency in organising it annually.

Tambuwal, who was represented by the state Commissioner for Religious Affairs, Alhaji Mani Maishinku, assured that the state government was ever ready to collaborate with the Ummah in achieving the said objectives.

“The theme of this year’s convention is considered timely as it is in tune with the programmes of the Federal and State governments in agricultural development.

The Chairman of the occasion, Malam Ahmad Bello, lauded the Federal Government,”for defeating Boko Haram threats to security”.
“Having thus addressed the issue of insecurity last year, it is only logical that we should, this year, address the cognate issue of hunger in the country.
“Our political and spiritual leaders must do something about this, and urgently too, as it would be a crime, a sin, and a folly, not to do so,” Bello said.

PoliticsWhy President Buhari Must Run For Second Term – El-rufai by philpwresh(op): 8:56am On Apr 15, 2017
Nigeria's Muhammadu Buhari must stand for re-election in 2019 in the best interest of the country, one of his allies and governor of Kaduna State, Nasir El-Rufai has said.

Sworn in as the country's leader less than two years ago after ousting the incumbent Goodluck Jonathan at the polls, Buhari was heralded into the office like a messiah of a sort.

His campaign promises included stamping out corruption through and ushering in a new democratic era free from bitter partisanship.

A biting economic recession accompanied by rising cost of living and a not-so-successful war on graft have, however, watered down his popularity among the people who now see his change agenda as only a tired campaign slogan.

Those problems and his ill-health and notwithstanding, El-Rufai said Buhari has done well enough to be given a second term.

"My prayer is that the president gets well...gets back to full health and run again because I still believe his being president...the stability that he brings to the office is in the best interest of Nigeria," El-Rufai said on Friday.

Should Buhari chooses not to stand for re-election, the Kaduna state governor said he would expect him to have a say in who the ruling All Progressives Congress nominates as its candidate.

El-Rufai spoke against the backdrop of controversies generated after his 30-page memo to Buhari was leaked to the media. And the governor, who claimed he was not aware Buhari was sick when he authored the report, has firmly blamed unnamed presidential aide as the persons behind the leak.

"I know who leaked the memo," he said refraining from mentioning the aide's name.

On Friday, he was at the Presidential Villa to observe Juma'at Prayer with Buhari. He declared that though he was aware that some aides on Buhari's team disliked him, that would never prevent him from visiting the president.

“Within the Villa, there are people that like me and there are those who don’t and it is normal. My relationship with the President has never been strained in any way," he explained.

The governor insisted there was no sinister intention behind his authoring the memo, noting that the now famous memo was, in fact, in a "series of memos" he had sent to the president.

"It is not the fist, it is not the tenth. It is probably close to the twentieth memo I have written," he said.

"I have been working closely with Mr President for about seven years, from the time we were in the opposition in the CPC, through the merger into the APC.

"Anytime I see fundamental issues that require to be addressed by him, I discuss with him. When discuss...debate, and I get his thoughts, I would always tell, 'I will go back and articulate a memo and action plan for you.'"

PoliticsRecovered N13bn Belongs To Us — Governor Wike by philpwresh(op): 7:00am On Apr 15, 2017
AS controversy still trails the ownership of the N13bn in various denominations recovered from an apartment in Ikoyi, Lagos by the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Governor Nyesom Wike of Rivers state yesterday claimed that the money belongs to the State government even as he provided no evidence to back up his claim.

The governor has therefore given the Federal Government a 7-day ultimatum to return the money to the Rivers State Government, failure which the State Government will take legal action to ensure that it gets back her stolen resources.

Governor Wike said that investigations by the Rivers State Government revealed that the money was proceed from the sale of gas turbines by the immediate past Rivers State Governor, Rotimi Amaechi. The former governor has however denied having anything to do with the money.

Addressing newsmen at the Government House, Port Harcourt on Friday night, Governor Wike said: “The money in question belongs to the former Rivers State Governor, Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi. We want to confirm that the houses in Ikoyi also belong to Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.

“If you recollect in 2015, we said that gas turbines built by former Governor Peter Odili were sold to Sahara Energy, business partners of Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi at $319million. “That money was used to sponsor the All Progressives Congress for the 2015 general elections. From the date of sale of the gas turbines to May 29, 2015, the money depleted from $319million to $204,000 . What was stashed at the Ikoyi residence was part of that fund”.

According to him, “We have facts to prove that the said money belongs to the Rivers State Government. The Federal Government must return our money”.
Governor Wike said all the stories being peddled about the money belonging to the National Intelligence Agency are false and mere face saving measures by the embattled APC Federal Government.

He said: “As I speak to you, the Federal Government is so embarrassed that this has happened. All the stories that the money belongs to the NIA are fake”.
Governor Wike then challenged the Federal Government to set up a panel of Inquiry, which will sit publicly to investigate the money, if it doubted the claim of the Rivers State Government.

PoliticsWhy I Am Next Nigerian President - Princess Hadiza Ibrahim by philpwresh(op): 1:08pm On Apr 11, 2017
A 2007 presidential aspirant on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Princess Hadiza Ibrahim, is nursing the ambition to become the first female president of Nigeria come 2019.

She gave her reasons why she is in the right position to take over from President Muhammadu Buhari of the All Progressives Congress, APC.
Hadiza, who was a delegate to the last National Confab on the platform of the National Council of Women Societies, dumped PDP for the APC back in 2015.

She told the Sun, “I gave my support to Baba to become president in 2015. I did not want to contest with Baba because he has tried and I felt we should give him that support.

“I felt that Baba Buhari should come and I gave him all my support. He did not ask me for it. I did not want to contest with him. I did not want to be his rival.

“I gave him the support to be the president. So, that was the reason, I did not pick the form to be president in 2105. I must tell you that by 2019, I will contest.

“Baba should even handover to me because I supported him. I am from the North, though I was born in Ibadan, except they say Kogi is no longer part of the North.

“I want to clarify that. Baba should hand over to me. Baba should even recommend me because I recommended him.

“I believe that politics is for everybody; being a weaker sex does not mean I should not be in politics. Politics is meant for both men and women.

“I believe that what a man can do, a woman can also do a little bit out of it; I might not say better.

“I was determined to move this country forward. But I was not allowed and the women did not give me that support.
“Women were more in number then, even up till now, than men. If all women should give me that support, I would have been a president by now and the country would have been better than what it is.”

Foreign AffairsEgyptian Christians Weep With Rage After Palm Sunday Bombing Killed 44 by philpwresh(op): 1:20pm On Apr 10, 2017
Egyptian Christians wept with rage on Monday as they recovered the bodies of loved ones killed in twin church bombings, furious at a state they believe will no longer protect them from neighbors bent on their murder.

Forty-four people were killed in the attacks on Palm Sunday, a joyous festival a week before Easter when Christians celebrate the triumphant arrival of Jesus in Jerusalem.
At Tanta University hospital morgue, desperate families were trying to get inside to search for loved ones. Security forces held them back to stop overcrowding, enraging the crowd.

“Why are you preventing us from entering now? Where were you when all this happened?” shouted one women looking for a relative.
Some appeared in total shock, their faces pale and unmoving. Others wept openly as women wailed in mourning.

A middle-aged man who had just stepped out of the morgue after seeing his dead brother stood with his face buried in his hands weeping.
“You sons of bitches,” he shouted as his family tried to calm him.
Hours after the attack, Kerols Paheg and other young Coptic Christians were already digging graves in the basement of the devastated St. George Church in the northern Nile Delta city, where the first of the bombs exploded, killing 27 and wounding around 80.

He showed photos on his phone of the carnage: human remains, blood and shattered glass strewn across the floor of the church on one of the holiest days in the Christian calendar.

“Today was supposed to be a day of festivity,” he said.
From now on, Christians will have to protect their churches themselves, rather than rely on the police, “because what’s happening is too much. It’s unacceptable,” he said.

Copts make up about 10 per cent of Egypt’s 92 million people, the largest Christian minority in the Middle East.
Inspite of a presence dating back to the Roman era, the community feels increasingly ostracized and has repeatedly been targeted in attacks, including by Islamic State, which claimed responsibility for Sunday’s bombings.

Hours after the blast in Tanta, the second bomb blew up at the entrance to Saint Mark’s Cathedral in Alexandria, the historic seat of the Coptic pope, killing 17 people including three police officers and wounding 48.

Pope Tawadros had been leading the mass at the time of the blast but escaped unharmed, the Interior Ministry said.
Though Islamic State has long waged a low-level war against soldiers and police in Egypt’s Sinai peninsula, its stepped up assault on Christian civilians in the mainland could turn a provincial insurgency into wider sectarian conflict.

On Sunday, the group warned of more attacks and boasted of the number of people killed by three church bombings it says it has carried out since December: 80.

President Abdel Fattah al-Sisi has promised to protect the Christian minority as part of a campaign against extremism.
Copts in Tanta said security was almost non-existent on Sunday despite repeated warnings in recent weeks.
A senior police official told Reuters a bomb was discovered and disabled near the Tanta church about a week ago.

“That should have been an alarm or a warning that this place is targeted,” said 38-year-old Amira Maher, who was waiting for her injured brother at a nearby hospital.
“Especially Palm Sunday, a day when many people gather, more than any other time in the year… I don’t know how this happened,” she said.

Milling about the charred church interior, as if trying to take in the enormity of the attack, several members of the community expressed dismay at what they said was lax security.

Tanta priest Tawfik Kobeish expressed perhaps the most common of all emotions among the grieving: disbelief.
“We were not expecting people who live with us in the same country, people with whom we’ve shared love and friendships, and with whom we’re familiar, to do these things,” said Kobeish, the sound of ambulances bearing the wounded echoing outside.

PoliticsWhy Nigerian Government Is Losing Corruption Cases - Obasanjo. by philpwresh(op): 12:59pm On Apr 10, 2017
Former President Olusegun Obasanjo has blamed the recent string of losses suffered by the Nigerian government in the corruption cases instituted before the courts to lack of proper investigation and unseriousness.

Mr. Obasanjo said thison Sundaywhile playing host to members of the correspondents chapel, Nigeria Union of Journalists, Ogun Chapter, at his hilltop residence in Abeokuta.

“I was reading today when the president (Muhammadu Buhari) said the EFCC should stop losing cases. They lose cases for a number of reasons,” said Mr. Obasanjo.

“One, they engage more of outside lawyers. I believe that they need staunch, `ogbologbo’ lawyers inside that will do the work.

“If I am a lawyer and I want the opponent to win a case, what I will file will be `wishy washy’.

“And if I file a `wishy washy’ case, the opponent will see the loophole and he will get out of it. I believe that it is important.

“Secondly, thorough investigation is very important. Now, investigation must be thorough, it must be proper and it must be really taken seriously.

“Third, our judges must be committed in fighting corruption.”

Mr. Obasanjo’s statements came days after the chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee Against Corruption, Itse Sagay, expressed worries about the development.

Last week, at least three judges delivered rulings that went against the corruption cases being prosecuted by the federal government.

Justice Abdulazeez Anka of the Federal High Court in Lagos vacated a freeze order on the accountof a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Mike Ozekhome, after initially ordering a temporary forfeiture of N75 million found in the lawyer’s Guaranty Trust Bank account.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had sought a freeze order on the account alleging it to be proceeds of crime.
Two days later, a High Court of the Federal Capital Territory discharged a judge of the Federal High Courtin Abuja of all 18-count charges of fraud brought against him, his wife, and a senior lawyer.

The judge, Adeniyi Ademola, and his wife, Olabowale, as well as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria, Joe Ago, were accused of fraudulent diversion of huge sums, ranging from local and foreign currencies, possession of firearms and involvement in illegal collection of gratification.

On Thursday, a Federal High Court in Lagos issued an order unfreezing the Skye Bank account of a former First Lady, Patience Jonathan. The EFCC had in November 2016 filed an application before the court seeking an order freezing the account. The Commission had contended that the funds were reasonably suspected to be proceeds of crime. The account is said to harbour the sum of$5.8 million.

In the same week, a federal court discharged and acquitted a former Niger Delta minister, Godsday Orubebe, of all corruption allegations.

According to Mr. Obasanjo, those involved in the handling of the government’s corruption cases as well as the judiciary must be committed to fighting corruption.

“Because if the investigation is very sound and you have `ogbologbo’ lawyer to handle the case, if you have Salamigate, you know what the answer will be,” the former president said.

“So, it is a line: investigation, prosecution and the judiciary. If there is weakness along this line, chances are that corruption cases will continue to be lost.”

CrimeMy Husband Is Desperate To Make Money, Wants To Use Me For Money Rituals–wife by philpwresh(op): 7:25am On Apr 08, 2017
A fashion designer, Bose Oguntoye, on Friday pleaded with an Agege Customary Court, Lagos, to end her five-year-old marriage, citing her husband’s fetish practices and threats to her life.

“My husband is too money conscious and is desperate to make money at all costs.
“I live in fear of the unknown because of all kinds of charms l see with him.

“He also beats me up at any slightest opportunity, especially when he is not in a good mood, he visits his anger on me,’’ she told the court.

Testifying before Mr Phillips Williams, the court President, she said there was no love lost between them again.

“Sometime in April 2015, when l became pregnant with our second child, my husband placed a charm on me and l became sick and eventually ran mad.’’

He took me to somewhere in Matogun, Ikorodu under the pretext of curing me and l was being fed with all sorts of assorted charms.

The petitioner said that she is still alive today due to the intervention of her family members who came to take her away, when her health was deteriorating.

“I was taken to Ikare in Ondo State where l spent five months, before l became hale and hearty again.’’

Bose alleged that when she came back to her matrimonial home, her husband did not relent in his fetish ways.

“He took me to a muslim cleric who gave me a substance and told me not to get close to my husband for sometime.
“On getting home, my husband told me to move to my parent’s house, which l refused. This led to a series of misunderstandings between us.’’

According to the petitioner, the respondent became confrontational with her.
“He told me that he wants to be rich this year under any circumstances. l must build houses and buy cars’’ to which l replied “there is no problem with that, as long as you don’t use me for money rituals.’’

Bose told the court that the respondent used force to collect her two children from her, under the guise of being a police officer.
“They made me write a statement under duress, to release my children and they took them away from me, claiming that l was mentally unstable.’’

“I had to run for my dear life when l realised he was making serious efforts to use me for money rituals.

The respondent, Adewale Oguntoye, an indigene of Ondo State, resident at No. 4, Oluyomi Olusesi St., Iju-Ishaga, Lagos, however, denied the allegations, but was ready for the dissolution of the marriage.

According to the father of two, there has been a frosty relationship between him and his wife since she came up with the idea of going to another church.

Adewale, a resident of No. 4, Oluyomi Olusesi St., Iju-Ishaga, Lagos, claimed that the petitioner had been keeping late nights and would not disclose her whereabouts.

“She started misbehaving, keeping all sorts of friends and became disrespectful to me.’’
Adewale said he suspected his wife was dating the pastor of the church she started attending, even after he vehemently disagreed and warned her not to continue, she remained adamant.

He alleged that the pastor took the petitioner out on Valentine’s Day and bought her different gifts.

The respondent described his wife as an adulterer.
On the allegation of trying to use his wife for money rituals, the respondent denied, but the petitioner remained adamant.

NAN reports that the court’s president later invited the estranged couple to his chambers for a possible resolution of the crisis.
He then adjourned the case until April 20, for hearing. (NAN)

PoliticsAbdulminin Jibrin Apologizes To Buhari And All APC Supporters. by philpwresh(op): 6:56am On Apr 08, 2017
Abdulmumini Jibrin, the member representing Kiru/Bebeji Federal constituency in Kano state, has apologized to President Muhammadu Buhari over the recent comments he made on him.

Jibrin made the remarks while addressing his supporters at his residence shortly after conducting special prayer for the president in Kofa Juma’at Mosque, Bebeji local government area of the stateon Friday.

“I apologise to President, APC, Gov.Abdullahi Ganduje and all APC supporters over what I said even though it was misinterpreted and misconstrued.

“To my party supporters, leaders, friends and all those who felt offended over my comments, I sincerely apologise.

“While I offered the advice and proffered solutions in good faith, some political detractors availed themselves of the opportunity to deliberately misconstrue and misjudge my remarks in order to put me on coalition course with my party and President,” he said.
Jibrin, who is currently on a suspension imposed on him by the House of Representatives over the 2016 budget padding scandal, said he would remain an ardent supporter of President Buhari and his anti-corruption crusade

He said for long he had launched Muhammadu Buhari Special Empowerment programmes as part of his support for President Buhari.

“I was in the United Kingdom when the thing happened. What I did was to rush down home in the next available flight. I want show them that Iam still with my people and they support me at all times,”he said.

The chairman of APC Kofa ward, Alhaji Bala Shuaibu, described those who earlier participated in protest against the legislator at the state party Secretariat in Kano as “mere rented crowd and opportunists”.

He assured Jibrin of the total support of the constituents adding what he said in his tweeter handle was not reported in details, which gave room for unnecessary misinterpretation.

Jibrin had on March 30, in a series of tweets, asked the president to resign an action which drew the ire of some members of his constituency who promised to initiate a recall process against him.

PoliticsNigerians Have Realised That APC Has Nothing To Offer ~ Gov Wike by philpwresh(op): 4:13pm On Apr 07, 2017
Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has declared that Nigerians have realised that the Ruling All Progressives Congress ( APC) has nothing to offer in terms of developmental projects, aside the circulation of lies.

Governor Wike also stated that the APC fight against corruption is targeted at the intimidation of political opponents, as the APC only prosecutes former PDP governors , while indicted Former APC Governors are allowed to roam freely.

Speaking at the Government House, Port Harcourt on Friday when he granted audience to the Abuluoma Council of Chiefs, Governor Wike said there is no sincerity in the fight against corruption by the APC.

He said: “Nigerians have seen that the present ruling party has nothing to offer them except to tell lies.

“They claim they are fighting corruption, but how many APC former governors have been arraigned. Nobody is against the government fighting corruption, but it must be fought with sincerity.

“Even when an APC Former Governor is indicted by a judicial commission of Inquiry , they fail to prosecute such a person “.

The governor added: “I just heard that they have arrested the former Niger State Governor after two years. Maybe because political activities are picking up and they want to intimidate him, that is why this is happening now”.

Governor Wike said that the crisis that the APC planted in the PDP will be the first thing that will consume it.
On development projects in Abuluoma, Governor Wike assured the community that his administration has awarded contracts for the construction and rehabilitation of roads in Abuluoma and Amadi Ama communities.

He thanked the Abuluoma people for their massive support for him during the electioneering period, noting that he will keep all the promises he made to them.
Earlier, the Amanyanabo of Abuluoma, Brigadier General Bright Ateke Fiboinumma lauded the governor on his achievements, especially the development of infrastructure across the state.

PoliticsDon't Create More Enemies For Buhari - APC Warns Sagay by philpwresh(op): 7:22pm On Apr 05, 2017
The All Progressives Congress (APC) has warned the chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee against Corruption (PACAC), Itse Sagay, to stop making utterances that could be interpreted as an attack on the National Assembly.

In a statement by Bolaji Abdullahi, spokesman of the party, APC said as a professor of law, Sagay should know better than denigrate the institutions of democracy.

“In furtherance of the All Progressives Congress (APC) efforts to resolve the rift between the executive and the national assembly, the APC urges all government appointees to stop making statements that may further worsen the relationship between the two arms of government and derail the party’s effort to make peace,” the statement read.

“Specifically, the party urges Prof. Itse Sagay (SAN), chairman of the Presidential Advisory Committee against Corruption (PACAC) to exercise restraint and desist from making utterances that may be misconstrued as an attack on the institution of the national assembly.

“The party acknowledges the fatherly role being played by the President, H.E Muhammadu Buhari to resolve outstanding issues with the national assembly, by setting up a high-level committee led by the Vice President, Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.

“We believe the comments attributed to Prof. Sagay are uncalled for, regrettable and could further complicate the relationship between these vital arms of government.

“Our expectation would be that as a Law Professor of repute, Prof. Sagay would appreciate the need to not denigrate the institutions of democracy, be it the executive, legislature or judiciary.

“Moreover, as an appointee of Mr. President, we should expect the learned professor to key into his principal’s temper and help him to make friends that would make his job easier and not make enemies of people who, by virtue of the position they occupy under our law, are critical to the running of government and the nurturing of our democracy.”

APC also told Sagay, that the Senate has every right to summon him, after he claimed the lawmakers lacked the power to do so.

“The party specifically objects to the professor’s call on the senate to withdraw invitation extended to him. As someone appointed by our government, we find this kind of posturing unacceptable and potentially injurious to the peace efforts by the party,” the statement added.

“The party wishes to reiterate its earlier position admonishing all elected or appointed officials of our government to desist from utterances that may endanger efforts to build harmonious relationship between the two arms of government. Prof. Sagay should not operate outside this admonition.

“The party expresses happiness with the meeting it had with the senate caucus on Tuesday and is confident that all the issues raised will be addressed. It also urges the national assembly to further intensify its efforts to ensure timely passage of the 2017 national budget.”

PoliticsInvestigate Death Of My Parents - MKO Abiola's Son, Abdulmumuni Charges Buhari by philpwresh(op): 3:55pm On Apr 02, 2017
Abdulmumuni Abiola, a son of late Chief MKO Abiola, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to investigate the death of his parents.
Abiola, the winner of the annulled June 12, 1993 presidential election under the umbrella of Social Democratic Party, SDP, died in while in detention when General Abdulsalami took over after Abacha’s death.
He was imprisoned by the Abacha authoritarian government for refusing to renounce his mandate as the elected President of Nigeria.
Abdulmumuni stated this in an interview with The Punch on Saturday.
He urged the Buhari-led administration to investigate his parents’ death as they demand justice.
He said, “It doesn’t matter how long it takes. Even my own kids will ask for the truth about their grandfather’s death.
“The truth will always come out. I have always known that the cause of my father’s death is questionable. I appreciate Gen. Ishaya Bamaiyi for coming out to speak the truth that he knows.
“I salute Gen. Bamaiyi for being steadfast with the truth. I hope others involved in this matter will come out and speak the truth.
“As far as I am concerned and the family of Chief MKO Abiola is concerned, nothing has been let go. We are still interested in getting justice done.
“Justice delayed will not be justice denied in unravelling the real cause of my father’s death. My father is not somebody that should die and there is mystery surrounding his death.
“I am looking forward to a day when a leader of this country will find out the real cause of my father’s death. MKO Abiola was a good man,” he said
He added, “I am calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to do his best to get to the end of this matter – not only to unravel the killers of my father but also the killers of my mother, Alhaja Kudirat Abiola. They deserve justice.
“Since Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar was in charge of the country when my father died, I believe he has a case to answer.
“He needs to come out and tell Nigerians the truth. All the people involved in my father’s death should come out and apologise for what they did and did not do.

PoliticsSaraki Denies N310million Was Stolen From His House by philpwresh(op): 3:43pm On Apr 02, 2017
Nigeria Senate President, Dr Bukola Saraki, has described as mischievous and concocted, allegations that the sum of N310million was stolen from his house.

Reacting through a press statement issued on Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary, Sanni Onogu, he added that the allegation that the said money purportedly stolen from a Bureau de Change operator in November, 2015 by suspected operatives of the Department of State Services (DSS) and some Army personnel belonged to him was spurious and targeted at misleading the public.

The statement also said the publication by some online media platforms was a rehash allegations for malicious reasons, saying Mr. Senate President has nothing to do with the money.

The statement said: “the Office wants to reiterate that the Senate President had nothing to do with the said stolen money by suspected security agents then and even now as being maliciously peddled by some online media to tarnish his image.”

“It would be recalled that when the incident was reported by the media in December 2015, a section of the online media which has become notorious for dragging the name of the Senate President into issues that he knows nothing about, the DSS issued a statement where it stated that it had arrested some of its men that partook in robbing a Bureau de Change operator in Abuja.”

“This Office had also in a statement, in reaction to the false report, stated that the Senate President had nothing to do with the money allegedly stolen. We still insist that he has nothing to do with the money and we challenge those still rehashing the stale and fake news to avail themselves of the reports of the police and the DSS on the matter to avoid misleading members of the public unnecessarily.”

“Let me state that the Senate President has no army personnel among his security details. Therefore, it becomes absurd for one of the suspect in the robbery to have claimed according to the report that the money was brought to the Senate President’s house from where they connived to steal it.”

“The report remains a lie which must be disregarded by the public, and should it be recirculated tomorrow, it will still remain a lie. At best we count this unwarranted fake report as part of the April Fool ritual. But the public deserves a better deal from its sponsors and purveyors”.

“Besides, the content and intention of the fake is nothing but baseless allegations emanating from the infantile minds of unreasonable interlopers, hell bent on rubbing mud on the reputation of a distinguished Nigerian, who is today in his capacity as the Senate President, is working assiduously with critical stakeholders to stabilize and grow our economy. Enough is enough.”

PoliticsSaraki Is A Threat To APC, Democracy - Adamawa Lawmaker, Alhassan Urmar by philpwresh(op): 10:30am On Apr 01, 2017
Adamawa State House of Assembly member, Alhaji Alhassan Umar, representing Jada/Mbulo constituency, yesterday said that Senate President Bukola Saraki, was not only a threat to the future of the All Progressive Congress, APC, but also to the country’s democracy.

Umar said this while speaking to newsmen yesterday in Yola where he alleged that Saraki had put in place multiple plans to frustrate the government of President Muhammadu Buhari to the detriment of Nigerians.

According to Umar, the unnecessary crisis over the confirmation of Ibrahim Magu as the substantive Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, and the refusal to confirm the Resident Electoral Commissioners, RECs, was a grand design by the Senate President to frustrate the war against corruption and derail the country’s democracy.

He said, “The Senate President is an opposition within APC because he personalizes everything about government policies.
“He is running the senate as his private estate. He poses serious political threat to the future of the APC if the party leadership does not call him to order.”

The lawmaker insisted that the action of the Upper Chamber dominated by the ruling APC members was essentially anti-government and that their continuous opposition to the president’s decisions will not bring development to the country.

He, however, called on the Senate to confirm Magu as EFCC chairman lounging out that the anti-graft agency under him had been active and that the tempo must be maintained in order to effectively curb corruption.

Politics"Resign Now", Abdulmumin Jibrin To Buhari by philpwresh(op): 7:03pm On Mar 31, 2017
A member of the Nigerian House of Representatives, Abdulmumini Jibrin, has called on President Muhammadu Buhari to resign from office on health grounds.

Mr. Jibrin, a member of the ruling All Progressives Congress, said the president’s ill health has affected governance in the country badly.

“PMB should opt for or encourage to accept a negotiated exit. The country can not afford a sort of part time president at this time,” Mr. Jibrin tweetedFridayevening.

“The president I see on camera needs full home care not office, moderately quiet life, enough rest and quality time with his family.

“Life and health belongs to God but the more I see pictures of Mr President, the more Iam convinced he needs to go and rest. He needs it!”

Mr. Jibrin is currently on suspension. He was sanctioned last year by the House of Representatives after accusing the speaker, Yakubu Dogara, his former ally, of budget fraud.

Mr. Buhari recently returned from the United Kingdom where he stayed for more than a month for medical treatment for an undisclosed illness.

Mr. Jibrin, who posted 30 tweetsFridayevening, started by saying “PMB, TIME TO LET GO: So many issues are left unattended even small issues that a presidential cough can deal with are left hanging”.

The lawmaker represents Kiru/ Bebeji Federal constituency of Kano State.
