Mrs. Eunice Ortom, wife of Benue Governor, has promised to purchase JAMB forms for female students interested in science courses. She made the promise on Friday in Makurdi, while meeting with women to asses the progress of her NGO – Eunice Spring of Life Foundation( ESLF). The NGO initiates and promotes programmes that would assist women and girls in the areas of education, health and agriculture. She said that her emphasis on the sciences was to encourage more girls to become professionals in science-related fields, after observing that very few women were doctors, pharmacists, engineers, architects and medical scientists in Benue. The governor’s wife said that the priority given to the sciences was also in line with the working document of the Samuel Ortom-led administration that emphasised collective vision for a new Benue. She promised to initiate more programmes that would uplift the girl-child to tap the massive potentialities of women toward national growth. analice107:Brother, to add to what u have said. Before the american civil war that liberated the black slaves... White Christians put their life on the line just to save black slaves, they did all they could to abolish slavery. The first movement made to abolish slavery was made by white christians. JESUS CHRIST never owned slaves,so no christian in his/her right mind would accept slavery, since the bible tells us to live in Christ like manner.... But the Quran clearly states that Muslims should follow the foot steps of Muhammad,NO muslim would deny that Muhammad didn't own slaves. That's why some muslim don't see anything wrong with slavery... |

Reports have emerged stating that Chelsea has identified Alexis Sanchez as their no.1 transfer target this summer. It appears that Chelsea manager Antonio Conte wants to recruit the Chilean talisman for the upcoming 2017/18 season. AFP Italian journalist Fabrizio Romano has reported that Conte has raised up transfer targets in a series of meetings with the club’s owners. Technical director Michael Emenalo will be responsible for handling transfer negotiations in the summer. It’s said that Alexis Sanchez and a left-sided centre-back will be the main priorities. Chelsea are already on course to win the Premier League this season as they sit 10 points clear at the top of the table with only 10 games left. The coup of Alexis Sanchez would go a long way in ensuring the Blues retain the title next season too. However, Chelsea will face heavy competition for the signature of Alexis. It’s also reported that Paris Saint-Germain, Juventus and Inter Milan are also considering taking the Chilean on board. Inter Milan have recently been bought over by Chinese businessmen and are expected to spend big in the summer. They want to restore the glory days to the San Siro and think that Alexis Sánchez would be pivotal to that plan. Sanchez’s contract expires in 2018 and Arsène Wenger has already said that talks will resume at the end of the season. Alexis Sanchez is currently on £130,000/week but if reports in the Independent Newspaper are correct, he wants that to be almost doubled to £250,000 per week. This would make him the highest-paid player at the club, something Wenger seems to be resisting. SOURCE http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/03/chelsea-make-arsenals-sanchez-top-priority/ |

Namibian police have awarded a woman a trophy for bravery after saving her husband from the jaws of a crocodile, the newspaper The Namibian reported Monday. Elizabeth Shintangu, now 29, was doing laundry in the Kavango River near Rundu in the north-east while her husband, Matheus Kativa, was bathing in it in 2016 Suddenly, Kativa felt like “a car had fallen on top of me,” he told the newspaper. “I screamed for help, and, the next thing, I saw my wife on top of the reptile, fighting it. “Then it let go of me, and by that time my lower arm had been severed,” the farmer added. Before the couple had time to swim back to the river bank, the crocodile returned and grabbed Kativa again. “The water was all red with blood. I then saw his face as he waved good-bye,” Shintangu recalled. She pulled him back from the crocodile’s jaws, but the reptile launched a third attack. Shintangu’s screams alerted people from a nearby village who pulled the couple out of the river. “[M]en must see how prepared our women are to save us from danger,” said Samuel Mbambo, governor of Kavango East region. Presidency has disclosed that plans to convert illegal refineries to modular ones are on. According to a statement by the Senior Special Assistant on Media and Publicity to the Vice President, Laolu Akande, the plans are part of President Muhammadu Buhari’s new vision for oil-producing communities in the Niger Delta. He said the modalities are being worked out to explore how some of the illegal refiners and the local communities in the region can become shareholders in the proposed Modular refineries concept of the Federal Government. A modular refinery is a refinery made up of smaller and mobile parts- (skid-mounted)- that are more easily fabricated and can be more quickly transported to site. They come in different sizes with varying capacities normally lower capacity than conventional refineries with more elaborate and complication set-up. Under the plan being considered in the presidency, the Federal Government could supply crude to the local refineries at a reasonably considered price, as an incentive to stop the current practice whereby the illegal refiners vandalise and steal the crude. This concept would also prevent the environment degradation that the spills and damaging the trunklines have been causing. Also, marginal field operators can also supply crude to the new modular refineries that would have the illegal refiners integrated.” “The consideration going on now is subsequent to the promises made by the Federal Government during the presidential interactive engagements in several oil-producing States led by the Vice President Yemi Osinbajo to integrate the illegal refiners, rather than a scorched-earth policy that seeks to eliminate the operations of such refiners”, the statement read. Some of hurdles to be crossed are especially issues around the engineering and technical ramifications of such a conversion as well as financial models that would be workable and profitable. According to the statement, specific consideration on how to integrate local “illegal” refiners in the oil-producing communities into the Federal Government’s proposed modular refinery concept is now in progress with the Presidency and the Nigeria Sovereign Investment Agency, NSIA, spear-heading efforts. The issues around technical and engineering implications of how to integrate the refiners were discussed last week with industry experts and practitioners making presentations on how to implement the modular refinery a brain child of Dr. Ibe Kachikwu, the Minister of State for Petroleum Resources. The experts are working closely with the NNPC, Oil and Gas operators, owners of marginal fields, operators of refineries and various technical services providers to develop a workable system to develop this initiative. Another important component of the plan under consideration is to involve the current illegal refiners and their communities as shareholders while the NDDC and the NSIA will also hold substantial holdings/equity sufficient to make the smaller refineries operational as a business and a going concern. To facilitate effective community engagements, an MOU would be established under the plan with the affected communities determining the communities share, while the FG would supervise the implementation, which would be driven largely by industry operators and the communities. Governor Ayo Fayose of Ekiti state Sunday urged Nigerians to resist what he described as the rascality of Presidency officials who he said are bent on destroying our hard-earned democracy and emasculating the National Assembly. The governor said: “The major difference between democracy and dictatorship is the presence of the legislature in democracy and its absence in a dictatorship”, adding that efforts by this administration “to hand-cuff the National Assembly is a subtle plot to foist full-blown dictatorship on Nigerians. He therefore charged Nigerians to resist such development, saying: “In doing so, we shall be defending our democracy and we shall also be defending ourselves and generations of Nigerians yet unborn. This democracy cost us a lot in blood and sweat. The labour and sacrifice of the heroes and heroines of our democracy must not be allowed to go in vain”, he said. The governor made the remarks in a statement released in Ado-Ekiti Sunday by his Chief Press Secretary, Mr. Idowu Adelusi, saying it is a shame when the Constitution of the country is violated by Federal appointees and the Presidency keeps silent. “It confirms that the Presidency is the one behind it. In the uniform saga involving the Comptroller-General of Customs, it is safe to say that the Presidency is in support of Hammed Ali against the National Assembly. “It is scary that a whole Senate of the Federal Republic has to bow to an appointee who had needed the same Senate to confirm his appointment. In a democracy which thrives on separation of powers, this is tantamount to an invasion of the hallowed chambers of the legislature, in the same manner that we recently witnessed against the Judiciary. “When the Presidency accepts and defends the arrogance of one man against the time-tested and practice-honoured intricate system of governance, then, the system as a whole has collapsed. It is even more dangerous that the courts have been dragged into this obvious plot to destroy the legislature just as we recently witnessed a similar plot against the Judiciary itself” “It is an open secret today that many judges are being blackmailed to do the bidding of the Presidency and the ruling party. It is also embarrassing to ask the Senate to maintain status quo on an issue that borders on the performance of its legislative duty”, he added. “Presidency appointees are ridiculing and sneering at the Legislature, which is comprised of the elected representatives of the people; Presidency appointees are relentlessly and without remorse tearing the fabrics that bind this country together: What are they turning this country into? When last did this happen in Nigeria? “Magu’s nomination has twice been rejected by the Legislature; yet, he sits pretty in office: Under what law and by whose authority? Mrs. Jamila Shu’ara, permanent secretary in the Federal Ministry of Education, who should have retired two years ago, is being brazenly kept in the civil service in flagrant violation of extant civil service rules and regulations. Where else in the civilised world can that happen? “If a power-drunk Presidency is bent on violating the law, why can’t the individuals concerned be men and women of integrity? “What is the essence of sending appointees’ nomination to the Senate? It is so that the Senate, which is the authority constitutionally-saddled with the responsibility to confirm or reject such nominations, can perform its duty. And its decision is biding; not advisory like some chop-and quench lawyers are rationalising. And no nominee, who fails to pass the Senate hurdle, can sit in the office to which he had been nominated. “The spirit as well as the letters of our Constitution; and, indeed, the pillars of democratic governance erected this road block to enforce checks and balances and keep the Executive in check because power corrupts and absolute power corrupts absolutely. “Otherwise, we shall have dictatorship on our hands and President Buhari would soon become Emperor Buhari in the same mould or even worse than those of Emperor Jean Bedel Bokassa and Emperor Idi Amin Dada. God forbid! Fayose then warned that “the infractions by the President’s men are becoming too often, too many, and achingly intolerable. We run a constitutional government and not a dictatorship. It is a shame that they are all behaving as if Nigeria is a banana republic” SOURCE http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/03/magu-ali-vs-senate-presidency-destroying-democracy-fayose/ |
Dating and Sex What to avoid on dates. It's in the Bible, Romans 13:13, TLB. "Be decent and true in everything you do so that all can approve your behavior. Don't spend your time in wild parties and getting drunk or in adultery and lust, or fighting, or jealousy." Dating should not include a sexual relationship. It's in the Bible, I Corinthians 6:13,18, TLB. "But sexual sin is never right: our bodies were not made for that, but for the Lord…That is why I say to run from sex sin. No other sin affects the body as this one does. When you sin this sin it is against your own body." Keep yourself pure. It's in the Bible, I John 3:3, TLB. "And everyone who really believes this will try to stay pure because Christ is pure." To keep from hurting ourselves, sexual desires and activities must be placed under Christ's control. It's in the Bible, I Thessalonians 4:3-5, TLB. "For God wants you to be holy and pure and to keep clear of all sexual sin so that each of you will marry in holiness and honor—not in lustful passion as the heathen do, in their ignorance of God and his ways." If you have already gone too far physically, what should you do? First, acknowledge your sin. It's in the Bible, Psalm 51:2-4, TLB. "Oh, wash me, cleanse me from this guilt. Let me be pure again. For I admit my shameful deed—it haunts me day and night." Second, Ask forgiveness for your sin—God says you can start over again. It's in the Bible, Psalm 51:7-12, TLB. "Sprinkle me with the cleansing blood and I shall be clean again. Wash me and I shall be whiter than snow. And after You have punished me, give me back my joy again. Don't keep looking at my sins—erase them from Your sight. Create in me a new, clean heart, O God, filled with clean thoughts and right desires. Don't toss me aside, banished forever from Your presence. Don't take your Holy Spirit from me. Restore to me again the joy of Your salvation, and make me willing to obey You." Third, Believe that God has indeed forgiven you and quit feeling guilty. It's in the Bible, Psalm 32:1-6, TLB. "What happiness for those whose guilt has been forgiven! What joys when sins are covered over! What relief for those who have confessed their sins and God has cleared their record. There was a time when I wouldn't admit what a sinner I was. But my dishonesty made me miserable and filled my days with frustration. All day and all night Your hand was heavy on me. My strength evaporated like water on a sunny day until I finally admitted all my sins to You and stopped trying to hide them. I said to myself, 'I will confess them to the Lord.' And You forgave me! All my guilt is gone. Now I say that each believer should confess his sins to God when he is aware of them, while there is time to be forgiven. Judgment will not touch him if he does. You are my hiding place from every storm of life; You even keep me from getting into trouble! You surround me with songs of victory." |

A caterer, Nike Adegboyega, on Friday pleaded with an Agege Customary Court, Lagos, to end her eight-year-old loveless marriage, citing her husband’s fetish practices and threat to her life. “My husband constantly beats me and has turned me to a punching bag. “I have never enjoyed my marriage, I have been responsible for the upkeep of the family and yet, he does not appreciate all my efforts. “He is too abusive and has threatened to kill me several times,” she told the court. Testifying before Mr Phillips Williams, the court’s President, she said there was no love lost between them again. “My mother had warned me not to marry him that he doesn’t look responsible. But l refused because l was already pregnant before our marriage.’’ Newsmen report that Nike, a caterer with Isalu Hospital, Ogba, Lagos, who described her husband as a gold digger with dubious character, had approached the court, seeking the dissolution of the marriage. She said her husband once planned to dupe her friend by conspiring with a herbalist, adding “he is too fetish. “He keeps all sorts of charms at home and whenever I demand what they are meant for, he tells me they are for protection and success in business. “I became afraid for my life and my children … we have also had misunderstandings over feeding allowance.” The respondent, Moshood Adegboyega, 40, however, denied the allegations, and pleaded with the court not to dissolve the marriage. According to the father of two, there has been a frosty relationship between him and his mother-in- law since he married her daughter. Adegboyega, a resident of No. 2, Oremeji St., Ogba, Lagos, claimed that the petitioner had been keeping late nights, going to parties. “Whenever she offends me, she will not apologise.” Adegboyega said he made efforts and begged his wife to return, especially for the sake of the children, but she remained adamant. Newsmen report that the court’s president later invited the estranged couple to his chambers for a possible resolution of the crisis. He adjourned the case until April 25 for further hearing SOURCE http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/03/fetish-husbands-punching-bag-threatens-kill-woman-tells-court/ |

The U.S. Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson has commended Nigeria for the effective strategies adopted to combat the destructive activities of the Boko Haram terrorists, urging other countries of the world to learn the strategy deployed by Nigeria if the global terrorist group, ISIS must be defeated. Tillerson gave the commendation at the meeting of the ‘Global Coalition Working to Defeat ISIS’. The meeting was attended by Ministers of Foreign Affairs and senior leaders of the 68 countries of the global coalition working to defeat ISIS, in Washington, D.C. Tillerson described the coalition of the Multi-National Joint Task Force against Boko Haram as a success story that the Global Coalition Working to Defeat ISIS must build on. “Our information sharing as a coalition has prevented a number of attacks, and this must expand and accelerate regardless of departmental or international rivalries. “One example of this is West African nations who have put aside national differences to combat Boko Haram. “Let us build on this good example,” the secretary of state said. Tillerson commended Nigeria and the other neighbouring countries for putting aside their differences and uniting against Boko Haram. “We need greater intelligence and information sharing within our own domestic intelligence agencies and among our nations. “We know military strength will stop ISIS on a battlefield, but it is the combined strength of our coalition that will be the final blow to ISIS,” he said. He said ISIS was connected across every continent, adding we must work to break every link in its chain. “Our information sharing as a coalition has prevented a number of attacks, and this must expand and accelerate regardless of departmental or international rivalries. “We also must look this enemy’s ideology in the eyes for what it is: a warped interpretation of Islam that threatens all of our people. According to him, “many come from middle class or even upper class backgrounds, drawn to a radical and false utopian vision that purports to be based upon the Quran”. “Muslim partners and leaders of their faith must combat this perverse ideological message. And we are grateful that so many have and are ready to take up this responsibility. “But let me be clear: we must fight ISIS online as aggressively as we would on the ground. “ISIS presents an ongoing challenge to our collective security, but as we have seen, it is not more powerful than we are when we stand together,” he said. Nigeria’s Chief of Defence Staff, Maj.-Gen. Abayomi Olonisakin, emphasised the role of the coalition to defeat terrorists, drawing from the Boko Haram experience. “The multinational joint task force is a good example of how a coalition can help tackle terrorism and extremism – in our case, the terrorist group Boko Haram,” Olonisakin said. Nigeria’s defence chief said ISIS, just like Boko Haram, is a threat to collective global security and challenged the international community to act decisively to defeat the terrorist organizations. “In the words of Secretary of State Tillerson, ISIS presents a great threat to our collective security. So we must act now. “We must act collectively. We must act decisively to destroy ISIS and other terrorist organizations,” he said. Among those who attended the meeting were the Chargé d’affaires of the Embassy of Nigeria in Washington, Amb. Hakeem Balogun and senior officials of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The two-week-old strike embarked upon by teachers in public primary and secondary schools in Delta State may soon be called-off. This indication followed a meeting between Governor Ifeanyi Okowa and the leadership of the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Delta State wing, led by the chairman, Comrade Jonathan Jemirieyigbe. Jemirieyigbe told journalists in Warri after the meeting that deliberations were very fruitful, adding that the industrial action will be suspended in a matter of days. “Between now and Monday, we will call off the strike, we had a very fruitful discussion with the governor. We are Deltans and the Governor, Senator Okowa is a good man, dealing with us the way fathers deal with their children,” he said. While commending the governor for being labour-friendly, Jemirieyigbe however failed to state if the issues that led to strike were totally addressed. Daily Sun recall that the state NUT commenced strike action on March 9, 2017 in protest over alleged non-payment of primary school teachers salaries, entitlements and non-release of promotion of secondary school teachers among other issues. Okowa who also spoke to newsmen did not also reveal if his administration has sufficiently addressed the lingering issues but said the meeting was fruitful “and we discussed issues concerning the teachers and how to move our state forward.” Present at the meeting was the Special Adviser to the Governor on Labour Matters, Comrade Mike Okeme, among others. Before now, Governor Okowa and his aides had consistently maintained that the administration has met all its obligations to secondary school teachers but that teachers in primary schools were being owed some months of salaries as a result of the inability of local government council to pay due to short fall in allocation. His efforts to force secondary school teachers out of the strike was frustrated by the leadership of NUT, as students who dared to resume on March 20, according to the governor’s directive, were chased home by teachers. One of their victims whose mobile phone (Alcatel Pop Star 5) was snatched, Mr. Ajimati Adeyemi said he joined the bus with other passengers going to Mile 2 when the conductor and one other person who dressed in ‘black suite’ suddenly stood up and collected all thier phones and wallets before they were dropped at different bus-stops before Mile 2, Lagos. “I was surprised when I called my mobile line and I was told to come to Lagos State Task Force at Bolade, Oshodi where it was returned to me along with others” Another victim, Mr. Ozor Phillip who identified and testified inside court against the ‘one-chance’ operators said he was robbed of his mobile phone (Techno W2) at Arena shopping complex, Bolade, Oshodi. Meanwhile, the two thieves have been individually sentenced to 7 years jail term after they both pleaded guilty to the one count charged of ‘ conspiracy to steal and commit an offence contrary to section 409 of the Lagos State Criminal Law of 2011’, levelled against them. Magistrate Lateef Owolabi of the Lagos State Mobile Court at Oshodi said the 7 years jailed term without option of fine was to serve as deterrent to others who were still into this illegal and criminal activities within the society. Magistrate Owolabi said all recovered snatched/stolen phones be given back to their individual owners on bond. The Comptroller-General of Nigerian Customs Service, Col. Hameed Ali (retd), on Wednesday, failed to appear before the Senate, contracy to a directive of the upper chamber. The senate had on Thursday asked Ali to appear before it at 10 a.m. on Wednesday in Customs uniform to explain the rationale for directing that vehicle owners should be pay duty on their cars. Customs CG, Hameed Ali Prompted by Ali’s seeming disrespect by refusing to appear before the senate as directed, senators at exactly 10.32 a.m. went into a closed-door session apparently to assess the situation and make a resolution. The senators had on Thursday, turned back the comptroller-general from the chamber for not appearing in uniform, and rescheduled his appearance to Wednesday, with definte position that he should appear in Comptroller-General of Customs uniform. The senate had first invited Ali to appear before it on March 8 to brief it on the proposed policy for payment of Customs Duty by vehicles owners, no matter the age of the vehicle. However, Ali did not honour the invitation on the ground that he had a management meeting. Not satisfied with the reason, the senate issued a warrant mandating Ali to appear on March 16. But, on Tuesday, Ali told State House correspondents that he would not be at the senate, citing advice from the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF) as reason for his decision. He said that he had written to the senate on the development, explaining that a case had been instituted at the court on the matter. He said the AGF wrote to him, asking him and all parties to stay action on his summon to appear at the Senate in uniform, pending the determination of an originating summons filed by one Mohammed Ibrahim. Accordng to a reliable source in the National Assembly, although the appearance of the CG was listed as the fourth item on Wednesday’s Order Paper, he would not appear before the senate. The item on the Order Paper was captioned “Briefing by the Comptroller-General of the Customs and Excise’’ and slated to be moved by the Leader of the Senate, Sen. Ahmed Lawan. An Abuja-based lawyer has approached a Federal High Court in Abuja, seeking an order to restrain the National Assembly from compelling retired Col. Hameed Ali, Comptroller-General of Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) from wearing uniform. Mr Mohammed Ibrahim, the plaintiff in the suit, made copies of the process available to newsmen on Tuesday. The suit listed other defendants to include the Comptroller-General of NCS, the NCS, the Senate and the Attorney-General of the Federation (AGF). The plaintiff is seeking a declaration of the court that the oversight functions of the National Assembly did not extend to compelling, mandating and enforcing the first defendant to wear uniform before performing his duties. He is also seeking the court to declare that the first defendant, who is not a commissioned officer of the NCS, is not mandated by law to wear the service’s uniform. Ibrahim further asked the court to declare if Ali’s appointment made pursuant to Sections 5 and 171 of the Constitution could be subjected to the provision of Customs and Excise Management Act or any other law. The plaintiff, therefore, urged the court to decide whether the first defendant’s appointment, having been made pursuant to the provisions of the constitution, could be subjected to the provisions of other laws. He also asked the court to explain whether there was any legal provision that prescribed the wearing of uniform as a condition precedent by the first defendant in view of his appointment under Section 171 of the constitution. He asked the court to decide whether the first defendant, not being commissioned custom officer, could be mandated to wear the service’s uniform for the performance of the duties of Comptroller-General. The plaintiff further urged the court to decide whether every directive or power hitherto exercised by the first defendant while not in uniform was null and void. Ibrahim had also asked the court to decide whether, in view of Section 88 (1) of the constitution, the senate could summon the first defendant having not published a resolution to that effect. The defendants are mandated to, within 30 days after service of the originating summons on them appear in court. SOURCE http://www.vanguardngr.com/2017/03/uniform-controversy-lawyer-sues-senate/ |
President Muhammadu Buhari on Tuesday said public servants and many in the private sectors who have questionable wealth are celebrated with alumni recognitions, honourary degrees, chieftaincy titles and sometimes higher religious titles in the country. He stated this during the 65th Annual Council Meeting of the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) in Abuja. Buhari, who was represented by Vice President Yemi Osinbajo, said Nigerians are no longer concerned about the process of attaining success because the end justifies the means for them. The President also said cheating in examination and attainment of fake certificates among Nigerians had become a normal thing because of collapse of values in the society. Such collapse in value, he explained, makes it difficult for policy makers to effect change in the society. He said: “Today the attainment of wealth, power or educational influence is the mark of success which is not necessarily a bad thing except we are no longer concerned with the process of attaining success. “The end it appears today justifies the means which explains why cheating in exams and fake certificates simply do not generate the sort of outrage that such conduct would have generated years ago. “Public servants and many in the private sectors who have unexplanable wealth are celebrated in one form or the other with alumni recognitions, honourary degrees, chieftaincy titles and even higher religious titles. “Often, cheating is with the collusion of parents and teachers. This only reflects the failure of values in our larger society.” SOURCE http://thenationonlineng.net/people-questionable-wealth-celebrated-nigeria-buhari/ |

There are indications that President Muhammadu Buhari may take sides with the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Customs Service, Col. Hameed Ali (retd.), in his ongoing face-off with the Senate over his failure to wear his uniform. A source within the Presidency said that the position of the Presidency on the disagreement is that; no law compels Colonel Hameed Ali to wear a uniform. This position was based on legal advice made available to the President by the Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Abubakar Malami (SAN). The source added that the government’s stand is that there is a clear separation of powers among the three arms of government. He said the position of the Presidency was that lawmakers could not make laws and enforce the laws themselves. “The AGF has advised that no law compels a political appointee to wear any uniform. And again, the legislature makes laws, but they don’t have the power to enforce those laws,” the source said. When contacted on the face-off on Saturday, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Publicity, Garba Shehu, directed one of our correspondents to the Public Relations Officer of the NCS. When asked if the CG would heed the Senate’s order on Wednesday, the Public Relations Officer of NCS, Mr. Joseph Attah, said Ali would do the appropriate thing. “I am confident the CG will do the appropriate thing. Thank you,” he stated. SOURCE http://www.thebreakingtimes.com/senate-cannot-enforce-hameed-ali-to-wear-customs-uniform-presidency/ |
Some Nigerians are more terrified of policemen than armed robbers of kidnappers.. Are they not the ones that are supposed to protect us and our properties, but they are the ones terrorising good civilians.. Some witnesses of some crimes cannot come forward with their testimony because it is nearly impossible to put your trust in Nigerian police... I just wish the officers responsible for this assault should be treated like the criminals they are... |
A woman, Toyin Adeleye, who returned from the United States of America about a week ago had a feel of the brutality of the Nigerian police on Friday in Ado-Ekiti State after she reportedly refused to give bribe to police at a check point in the city. The woman was manhandled along with her two-month-old baby, Heritage, and her younger brother, Adeniyi Dada, by five officers before they were detained at a police station. The incident occurred at the checkpoint in front of the Ekiti Pavilion and a few metres from the official residence of the newly deployed Commissioner of Police, Abdullahi Chafe. Apart from detaining their victims, the policemen also impounded the black Kia Picanto car with registration number LAGOS FKJ 221 EE which she drove while returning from the market. The injured woman was seen breastfeeding her baby when journalists visited the police station on Saturday. The woman’s husband, Akanni Adeyeye, while speaking to journalists, lamented the inhuman treatment meted out to his wife, pointed out that she had bruises on her face and lacerations on her body. Mrs. Adeyeye’s bruised body Mr. Adeyeye, who slept in the police station to keep his wife company, said the policemen had requested the vehicle papers and the driver’s license of his brother-in-law, who was driving the car. He said one of the policemen withheld car documents given to them, demanding that they be “settled,”. He said the demand was rebuffed since the papers were valid. “My wife and her brother were returning from the market at about 3.00 p.m. on Friday and on arrival at the checkpoint in front of the Pavilion very close to their station, they asked for all vehicle papers and driver’s licence which were produced and they are valid,” he explained. Mrs. Adeyeye breast feeding at detention “After checking all the documents, the policemen were demanding for money to be given as ‘settlement’ which my wife and her brother refused. My wife drew their attention to the baby that was crying in the car. “Five of them were beating her at the point of arrest and on getting to the station, the beating continued. After thoroughly beating her, they obtained her statement around 10.00 p.m. There are wounds on the back of my wife and face to show for it. “On getting to the station, they now cooked up a story that my wife slapped one of them and tore his uniform which is a lie. They are telling this lie to justify their action of their cruelty to my wife, my baby and my brother-in-law. “Neither my wife nor her brother slapped any policeman or tore any uniform. The question to be asked is how would somebody who is not armed attack an armed policeman? They cooked up this falsehood to cover up their brutality,” he said. The Ekiti State Commissioner of Police, Mr. Chafe, claimed Mrs. Adeyeye was detained for attacking a policeman on duty. He said the woman tore the uniform of the policeman, adding that the matter would be further investigated. “Those people slapped my policeman on duty and tore their uniform,” he said. “Uniform is an authority and what those people did was against the law and it is not good for a civilian to slap a policeman. “It is not good for somebody to prevent a law enforcement officer from carrying out his lawful duty. “It is not about his age but the authority he carries. I don’t allow my men to do something contrary to the law. “I don’t want a woman to be detained with baby or with pregnancy. I don’t want an old woman or a minor to be detained. I have taken note of this and we will take the right action on the matter. SOURCE http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/more-news/226474-police-assault-detain-mum-baby-alleged-bribe.html

A popular Nigerian comedian, Bright Akpochi, A.K.A Basketmouth, on Friday in Lagos promised never to make negative jokes about the Nigeria Police and their performance. Basketmouth made the promise while receiving his stolen handset recovered by the police from the Lagos police commissioner, Mr Fatai Owoseni. He said that he made those negative jokes about the police due to public perception about the performances of the officers and men. “I want to thank the Nigeria Police for a job well-done. I thought I will never see again the items stolen from my house. “It is amazing that with two weeks of the robbery attack, the suspects were arrested, my handset recovered. “I usually make negative jokes about our police, but with this performance, I will never use them for negative jokes. I advise members of the public to always support the police. “In western nations, it is the public that assists the police for information against criminals,” he noted. Owoseni, while presenting the handset, said that Basketmouth’s visit was symbolic, stressing that his appreciation will boost the morale of the officers and men. He said that the police was committed to the safety of live and property, urging the public to always say something, whenever they see something. Some robbery suspects, on Sept. 7, 2016, invaded the home of Basketmouth at Lekki area of Lagos State. Two of the suspects had since been charged to court over the attack. A man who served 32 years in prison for a crime he says he did not commit has told Sky News he never gave up believing he would be released. Andrew Wilson, 62, walked free from a jail in Los Angeles after a judge threw out his murder conviction and vacated his sentence. He is likely to be formally cleared of the charge within a few weeks. He was greeted by family members, some of whom he had never met, when he was released from LA's Men's Central jail. A few hours later, he described to Sky News the emotions of that moment. "It scared me," he said. "But it was a good moment, it was a happy moment for me because I got a chance, not to just sit and talk to them, but I had the chance to hug my loved ones and tell them that I love them." Mr Wilson was convicted of robbing and killing 21-year-old Christopher Hanson as he slept in a parked car with his girlfriend in south-central Los Angeles in October 1984. He has always maintained he was not guilty and student campaigners from the Project for the Innocent at the city's Loyola Law School took up his case in 2015. Prosecutors admitted that a series of errors had prevented Mr Wilson from receiving a fair trial. They are not expected to take any further action against him. Mr Wilson is embraced by family as he talks to reporters following his release from jail The court heard that key evidence had been withheld from the jury during the original trial including that which showed Mr Hanson's girlfriend was not a credible witness. Mr Wilson says he "doesn't have time" to be angry at those who put him in jail. "If I do that, I'm taking good energy and wasting it when I can be spending that energy on my family. "I don't have time to waste being mad or thinking of something negative. Life is too short." He said the fight to prove his innocence kept him going while he was inside. "You just do it," he said. "You keep your fight going. It's like anything else, if there is something that you want you have to fight for it and you never give up. "If you know you're innocent, you never give up. "I'm glad I didn't give up." Mr Wilson said being outside had come as a shock. "It is all so space-age now. I haven't had movement like this, seen movement like this, just 32 years of being confined." He paid tribute to the law students who campaigned for him, saying he would give his life for them. A court will decide in May whether Mr Wilson should now be ruled innocent of the crime. That would open the way for him to receive compensation from the state of California. His mother spent years trying to get attention for his case. He will now be with her when she turns 97 in a few weeks' time SOURCE http://news.sky.com/story/man-freed-from-jail-32-years-after-wrongful-murder-conviction-10804365
