PoliticsBuhari Snubs APC Over ‘mismanaged’ N7bn Fund. by PhockPhockMan(op): 3:33pm On Mar 09, 2016

The All Progressives Congress (APC) is experiencing financial distress and has been unable to pay the salaries of its staff, TheCable can report.

At a news briefing on January 25, John Oyegun, national chairman of the party, had admitted that the party was having financial challenges, but he added that the party did not want to bother President Muhammadu Buhari because it was not his constitutional duty to finance the party.

“There has been this talk in the media but that goes to tell you that just like the economy, the party too is suffering from the stresses and strains of funding just like every institution in our polity,” he had said.

“That also goes to tell you that we are not a party that withdraws money from security votes or from any government agency. We are working on plans to raise money from within the memberships. That plan has matured and will soon put it into operation.

“I saw reports that we have written to the president to rescue the party. That is not part of his national duties and he has no intention because there are no funds from which he can draw from.

“The party has to come up with fresh and innovative ways as to how to raise resources for its operations and that, we have done. The plan is ready and will go into operation in the next one month or two.”

But TheCable has learnt that Buhari is not willing to “bail out” the party owing to allegations of financial mismanagement against leaders of the party.

A source privy to the “financial standoff” said some officials of the party magicked N7bn campaign funds in the last general election.

“The president is furious with the party leaders, and has refused to support them financially,” he said.

“The party now runs after state governors in a bid to survive, and has begun to knock on the doors of ministers.”

On February 24 when APC leaders met with Vice-President Yemi Osinbajo at the presidential villa, the financial crisis in the part was one of the major subjects of discussion.

PoliticsNnamdi Kanu’s Trial: Court To Hear Motion For Stay Of Proceedings On April 5. by PhockPhockMan(op): 1:03pm On Mar 09, 2016
Abuja – The Federal High Court on Wednesday said it would hear Nnamdi Kanu’s stay of proceedings motion on April 5.

Justice John Tsoho fixed the date after the prosecuting counsel, Mr Mohammed Diri, indicated interest to oppose the motion.

“In the circumstance, the hearing of arguments on this motion is adjourned till April 5,’’ he said.

Kanu, the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra alongside Benjamin Madubugwu and David Nwawuisi, were challenging the ruling of the court for witnesses to testify against them behind the screen.

Earlier, Chief Chuks Muoma (SAN), Counsel to the defendants announced to the court on the pending motion.

“My Lordship, after consultation with my clients, we agreed to appeal the ruling of the court given on Monday that prosecution witnesses can testify behind the screen.

“Furtherance to that, we consider it necessary to file this motion for stay of trial pending the determination of the appeal.

“The appeal against the ruling of the court was filed on March 8 and the motion for stay was filed March 9. The prosecution team has been duly served,” he said.

Muoma further said: “the practice is that once this kind of application is filed, the court should naturally adjourn the matter.’’

On his part, Diri said that the prosecution required time to respond properly to the application.

“My Lord, we will need time to respond to the motion for stay of this trial.

“Today was fixed for the commencement of trial, and we have brought our witnesses to court to start the trial only to be served this application this morning in the courtroom,’’ he said.

The applicants were arraigned for treasonable felony, conspiracy and unlawful arms possessions.

PoliticsAlleged N2.1bn Fraud: Those Waiting For My Arrest Will Wait Endlessly – Okupe. by PhockPhockMan(op): 5:06pm On Mar 08, 2016
Former Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Public Affairs to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan, Dr. Doyin Okupe, on Tuesday, refuted online reports that the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has begun investigation into his alleged involvement in the payment of N2.1 billion from the former National Security Adviser (NSA), Col. Sambo Dasuki, to the former Chairman of DAAR Communications, Chief Raymond Dokpesi.

Okupe who took to his Facebook page to debunk the reports which stated that the EFCC has written to the Presidency to investigate the involvement of his office as Special Assistant to the President on Public Affairs, however, pointed that his office didn’t have a budget or any capital vote and therefore lacked the capacity to award contracts, when he held sway.

Okupe said: “My attention has been drawn to publications on two online publications stating that EFCC is probing me with respect to the payment to Daar Communications Ltd. and the now famous $2.1 billion Dasuki gate.

“They claim in their write up that EFCC has written to the Presidency to investigate the involvement of my former office, office of the special assistant to the President on public affairs.

“My office does not have a budget or any capital vote. My office lacked the capacity to award contracts. I was employed to do a job and I was loyal and committed totally to my employer and whatever I considered was important in the line of my duty.

“I did not receive neither did I take any special gratifications for what I did. This is what is difficult for most of my detractors to believe. From the entire write up it is obvious the writer(s) of the story were speculating and imagining things that are not real.

“The EFCC cannot embark on an investigation based purely on fiction and delusionary imaginations. I am ashamed at the extent some unscrupulous and ill-bred journalists will go to disparage the innocent by publishing outright falsehood. Even if people are paid to bring imaginary political enemies down, do they not have the fear of God?

“Those who are impatiently waiting for my arrest , by the Grace of the Almighty God who I serve, and whose precepts I have kept all my life, in and out of office, will wait till kingdom come,” Okupe said.

However, according to one of the publications, in the letter titled: “Investigation Activities Re: Presidential Media Initiative (PM)” dated December 3, 2015, with Reference number CR:3000/EFCC/ ABJ/STF/VOL.137, the EFCC said it was investigating a case of diversion of public funds in which the sum of N2.1 billion was paid for purpose of providing national public relations project.

It is obvious the counsel for Kanu want an open court do they can have a meeting crowd who would intimidate the witness. The Judge needs to set it so only certain people can be within the court room or within a certain distance of the court house.
This is a case bodering on national security you can't just let everyone walk in
If the witnesses are sincere with themselves, let them testify eyeball to eyeball.

COURT UPDATE: NNAMDI KANU'S LAWYER DEMAND FOR ARREST OF WITNESSES

The counsel to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu Chuks Muoma SAN has demanded for immediate arrest of alleged witnesses of the Nigeria government with reference to section 351 subsection 1 of the Constitution.
This he said became imperative owing to their refusal to appear in court without their mask.He wondered why an accused person should not face his accuser’s eye ball to eye ball.
Mr. Idakwor the prosecuting counsel has pleaded the court repeatedly for a secret trial and permission for his witnesses to appear in masks, which plea was turned down by justice John Tshoho

This is quite shameful. If the witnesses cannot come foward because they fear for their lives then the prosecution should discontinue the trial. How can the prosecution say it is going bring in "masked people" to come and testify? You might as well bring Rochas Okorocha, put a mask on him and tell him to come testify. The trial is turning into a big joke
I suspect they want to bring Lai Mohammed as one of the mask witness.
PoliticsSSS Operatives, Nnamdi Kanu’s Lawyers, Family Members Clash In Court. by PhockPhockMan(op): 12:39pm On Mar 07, 2016
The trial of a leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, took a dramatic turn Monday, when counsel in the case told Justice John Tsoho of the Federal High Court that their lives were under threat.
The prosecuting team also accused Mr. Kanu’s lawyers and family members of constituting threats to its witnesses.
Mr. Kanu and two others – Benjamin Maudubugwu and David Nwawuisi – were brought before the court for alleged treason, for maintaining unlawful society, among others charges.
At the commencement of hearing on Monday, prosecution counsel, Mohammed Diri, informed the court that Mr. Kanu’s lawyer had altercation with members of the State Security Service while trying to enter the courtroom, Monday morning.
Reading from a short note he claimed was written by a staff of the SSS, Mr. Diri said the defence counsel and members of Mr. Kanu’s family were constituting threats to the lives of witnesses.
He asked the court to adjourn the matter till such a time when the witnesses would be granted the needed protection to help them confidently testify in court.
But the lead counsel to Mr. Kanu, Chux Muoma, asked the court to grant permission to Ifeayin Ejiofor, the counsel who had altercation with the SSS, to explain what happened.
When Mr. Ejiofor was given permission to speak, he accused SSS operatives of trying to kill him.
According to Mr. Ejiofor, he had gone to intervene in a dispute between members of Mr. Kanu’s family and staff of the SSS.
He said at the scene of the disagreement, he was told that the SSS staff were blocking Mr. Kanu’s family members from entering the court.
Mr. Ejiofor said the SSS operatives at the scene insisted that they would only allow three additional family members of Mr. Kanu to join those already in the court premises.
He said when he (Mr. Ejiofor) tried to explain to them that there was an order of court permitting members of the public to witness the proceedings, Mr. Ejiofor said a staff of the SSS threatened to kill him.
He therefore prayed the court to take note of the threat.
“My lord I will like you to take note of this threat to my life, because I don’t know what will happen tomorrow,” Mr. Ejiofor said.
The trial judge, Mr. Tsoho, who noted that events had taken a different turn from what was expected, added that if the parties to the matter felt threatened, the case might as well be handed over to the celestial order to resolve.
He asked the parties to decide whether or not they wanted the trial to continue.
The matter was thereafter stepped down for a 30-minute break to enable parties determine the way forward for the matter.
The court had adjourned the matter on February 19, for today March 7.

COURT CASE UPDATE: FG INSISTS ON SECRET TRIAL

The federal government is making mockery of herself and her judiciary and the world is watching. Recall that the court ruled previously that the trial shall be open trial and it is shameful that they have come again to say we need secret trial.
People are starting to get fed up at the shameful trial of Nnamdi Kanu on the side of the federal government. The judge is listening to the argument as it unfolds, the prosecution council said that the witnesses are afraid and face received unconfirmed threats. Nobody knows the witnesses and it is yet to know how masquerades can be threatened.
