PoliticsOnline Petition Asking Buhari To Resign Gathers Momentum. Premium Times. by PhockPhockMan(op): 9:12pm On Jan 02, 2016
An online petition calling on President Muhammadu Buhari to resign for disobeying court orders to release some high-profile detainees has gathered over 600 signatories in just over 48 hours of being created.
The petition, created by lawyer, Carol Ajie, followed comment by Mr. Buhari that a former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, who is being prosecuted in relation to an alleged misappropriation of $2.1 billion; and the leader of separatist group, Indigenous People of Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu, despite court orders that they should be freed during last Wednesday Presidential media chat.
So far, the petition has collected 680 signatures out of its 1,000 person target.
“On May 29th 2015, a former Military Dictator, Muhammadu Buhari, sequel to a contested election in March 2015 against a sitting President in Nigeria, the first time in Africa, an incumbent handed power peaceably, smoothly, heroically to a political rival,” the petition posted on Change.org read.
“Whereupon Mr Buhari then took the Oath of Allegiance to protect the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 and the President’s Oath of office to discharge his duties faithfully, in accordance with the Constitution and the Laws of Nigeria.
“Within President Buhari’s first year in office, too soon after he took the revered Oaths, he and state agents acting under his supervision, now demonstrate total lack of respect for Court Orders and at his maiden media chat on Wednesday 30th Dec., instant, Mr President made puerile attempts to justify these breaches, he said inter alia that some persons his regime locked up in cells dehumanized against court orders, Nnamdi Kanu had travelled without his passports.
The petitioner argued that the government should have deported Mr. Kanu or release him after detaining him for a period of not more than seven days instead of holding him indefinitely as stipulated by the Immigration Act or the Administration of Criminal Justice Act.
“But under the Immigration Act, the President or the Minister may deport anyone who travels without a valid travel document or detain for a period not exceeding 7 days. In holding Mr. Kanu beyond the required period they have infracted on the Immigration Act, the Administration of Criminal Justice Act, the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria 1999 and subsisting court orders.”
She further stated that Mr. Kanu’s agitation for the emergence of a breakaway country called the Republic of Biafra is in line with the right of self-determination as stipulated by the United Nations Covenant on Civil and Political Rights, which Nigeria is a signatory to.
“With regard to issues of “self determination”, the crux of Nnamdi Kanu’s campaign of the Independent People of Biafra, IPOB, having communicated IPOB’s intent to all and the United Nations as required by UN Covenant on Civil and Political Rights ratified by Nigeria, that people of any community or group may wish to exercise the right of self-determination with a view to pursuing their economic, social and cultural development; aware that their dignity as human persons had deteriorated and been consciously degraded under the present dispensation, sadly appearing power inebriate.”
She, therefore, called on Mr. Buhari to resign as President if he is not prepared to obey court orders or risk being impeached from office.
The Presidency declined to respond to the petition.
An official said it would be inappropriate for the presidency to dignify such a petition with a response.
He however said, “The truth is there are fresh charges against the detainees,” the official said.
“They were simply rearrested after they were released folowing the filing of fresh charges against them. So we don’t know what people are talking about when they talk about the government disobeying court order.”

I am happy I Av a very strong leader for president unlike the weak fool we booted out.
Fools just don't get it do they. These criminals were re arrested for another crime they committed and not the one before the judge that made him grant them bail.
Dasuki for instance was granted bail for possession of weapons and granted bail. He was rearrested and fools were shouting Blue murder not knowing that the crook has much more criminal acts of his he will answer for.
I like Buhari methodology, especially for these serial Crooks.
Dokpesi was granted bail, wasn't he allowed to go?
Tambuwal was granted bail and was allowed etc these ones don't have additional crimes hanging on their head but Dasuki, kanu, and that NIMASA thug has hundreds of charges that can be levelled against them. They aren't going anywhere soon.

First, Gitmo isn't technically part of the US. That's the reason the detainees were kept there. It creates the required environment to keep them in legal limbo (or purgatory if you want).

Secondly, none of the Gitmo detainee is a US citizen.

In this case these people are Nigerians held on Nigerian soil but some criminals in power refuse to obey the simple principles of separation of powers and the rule of law. You can't enforce the law by breaking the law. That kind of arbitrary abuse of power is a pure recipe for anarchy .

I'm not in anyway surprised by all this. Anybody could have predicted that the Mumuharri , the Daura President is too daft to understand how an orderly modern society works.

Enjoy your change ! E no concern me.

LAGOS, Nigeria

Nigeria’s government will not release two prominent detainees despite several court orders for their release, and will not comment on the situation of a third, wounded detainee, President Muhammadu Buhari said Wednesday.

Buhari, a former military dictator who calls himself a born-again democrat, did not discuss the propriety of defying court orders when he spoke on national TV.

“If you see the atrocities these people committed against this country!” Buhari said in justification. “We can’t allow them to jump bail.”

A Federal High Court set no bail conditions and ordered the unconditional release of Biafra separatist leader Nnamdi Kanu on Dec. 17. Kanu was detained Oct. 17 on charges recently escalated to terrorism and financing terrorism. His cause led to a civil war that killed 1 million people in the 1960s.

Former national security adviser Sambo Dasuki was detained Nov. 4 after intelligence agents surrounded his home for days to prevent him from leaving the country after a court allowed him bail to seek medical care abroad.

Dasuki is accused, among other things, of diverting $2.2 billion meant to buy arms to fight the Boko Haram Islamic uprising. Three courts have ordered his release on bail.

“What of the over two million people displaced, most of them orphans whose fathers have been killed?” Buhari asked. “We cannot allow that.”

He refused to discuss the situation of Shiite leader Ibraheem Zakzaky, who was detained with four bullet wounds Dec. 14 in military raids that allegedly killed hundreds of his followers.

The army said the raids and bulldozing of Zakzaky’s home and Shiite spiritual centers was a response to an alleged Shiite attempt to assassinate Nigeria’s army chief. Human Rights Watch has said the raid was unprovoked.

Authorities have refused to allow anyone to see Zakzaky.

Buhari said he would not comment until an investigation is complete.

1. We law abiding and patriotic Nigerians don't need any apology from the disgruntled element. His apology is as useless as a used tissue paper.

2. The written statement being published online is an authentic copy, until Kanu and his legal team disproves it.

3. With poorly cooked beans, mosquitoes, cold floor, lonely cell, grey mustache, and long detention - a video apology is the least of Kanu's immediate worries.

4. If Kanu is granted bail on Felony charges, we will still rearrest him for entering Nigeria illegally with no passport.

Nnamdi Kanu is a forgotten by-product. This should serve as a warning to all the lunatics out there.

God bless Nigeria.
Law abiding and patriotic Nigerians indeed. What made you feel you're law abiding and patriotic when you're here celebrating the public execution of the judiciary by the same government who promised to end impunity less than one year ago..
One thing we should all know is that a dangerous precedent has just been introduced.

PoliticsWe Have Defeated Boko Haram, December Deadline Met. FG. by PhockPhockMan(op): 9:00pm On Dec 23, 2015
The Minister of Information and Culture, Lai Mohammed, said on Wednesday that the Nigerian military had met the December deadline to defeat the Boko Haram terrorists.
The minister said this during his maiden meeting with editorial heads of media houses in Lagos.
President Mohammadu Buhari had, upon assuming office, issued a December 31 deadline to the military to defeat the Boko Haram terrorists.
“Today, I can report that the war against Boko Haram is largely won.
“I can confidently say this because just recently, I led a group of 33 journalists from both the local and international media to the hotbed of the insurgency, that is, Maiduguri, Kondugua, Kaoure and Bama.
“Today, I can report to you that the entire 70 plus kilometres stretch from Maiduguri to Bama and all the way to Banki which leads to Cameroun and the Central African Republic are in the hands of our gallant troops.”
He said the military presence could be felt ”every few metres along the road; at a point along that road we were just a kilometre to Sambisa forest.
“They have so degraded the capacity of Boko Haram that the terrorists can no longer hold on to any territory just as they can no longer carry out any spectacular attack.”
Mr. Mohammed, however, said that although there were still cases of suicide bombings, it was pertinent to note that such was the nature of insurgency globally.
“Unlike a war between two armies, an insurgency never ends with arms victory
“Even in countries like Colombia where insurgency was supposed to have ended decades ago, attacks like this still happen.”
He said that the insurgents had adopted a new style of attacking soft targets like motor parks, schools, entertainment centres, religious centres, killing innocent people mostly women and children.
He, therefore, urged Nigerians to support the military in the fight against terrorism in the country, saying that the military had availed itself creditably.
“It is our turn as civilians to give them our support; to realise that the war they are fighting is not their war alone, but our war, hence we must own the war.”
The minister disclosed that a national security campaign had commenced to raise awareness among Nigerians about the war, the sacrifices of our troops, and how to stamp out the remnant of the war.
“Jingles are being played on national radio and television as part of the campaign in order to keep the media better informed about the war, so that they can also better inform Nigerians,’’ he said.
Mr. Mohammed also said that an ad-hoc committee, comprising media representatives as well as intelligence agencies, would be inaugurated to regularly be updated about the war in order to better inform the public.

Justice Ahmed Mohammed announced the decision on Wednesday in Abuja after Mr. Kanu objected to the case, saying it was needless, as the federal government had repeatedly disobeyed previous court rulings.
But the judge said he was standing down from the case, saying Mr. Kanu had the right to reject the trial, “after all justice is rooted on confidence”.

“If any of the parties has no confidence in the court, he has the right to say so”, Mr. Mohammed ruled.
PoliticsBiafra: Court Reserves Date For Re-arraignment . Daily Trust. by PhockPhockMan(op): 3:24pm On Dec 23, 2015
A Federal High Court in Abuja has reserved date for the re-arraignment of the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the director of outlawed Radio Biafra, Nnamdi Kanu on charges of terrorism.
Justice Ahmed Mohammed yesterday told defence counsel, Ifeanyi Ejiofor that the case could not go on because the prosecution was not notified of fresh charges.
He adjourned the case to a later date to enable parties be served with notice of the arraignment.
Another Federal High Court, Abuja presided by Justice Adeniyi Ademola had on December 17 ordered the unconditional release of Kanu after the Department of State Services (DSS) failed to bring criminal charges against him.
This followed a similar order by Magistrate Shuaibu Usman of an Abuja Magistrate Court discharging Kanu of alleged criminal conspiracy, managing and belonging to an unlawful society, and criminal intimidation brought before the court on October 19. The offences contravene Sections 97 (b), and 397 of the Penal Code.
But the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP), Mohammed Diri, on Thursday filed a fresh six-count charge bordering on felony and terrorism against Kanu. Those charged with him are: Benjamin Madubugwu, and David Nwawusi.
Meanwhile, the court has granted leave to Kanu’s counsel Ejiofor to file an application today for his bail pending the trial.
According to Ejiofor the DSS has shown it is not ready to prosecute Kanu while refusing to comply with the orders made by the courts to release him.

PoliticsUAD Calls For End Of Mass Repression And Murder By Nigerian State. by PhockPhockMan(op): 11:47pm On Dec 21, 2015
The United Action for Democracy (UAD) National Convener, Baba Aye, called on the Nigerian government to halt its mass repression, murder, and unlawful detention of citizens across the Federation. These statements were issued during a December 21st, 2015 press release.

Mr. Aye addressed the “wave of macabre repression” which has included “hundreds of Shi’ite Moslems killed in Zaria” and state-sanctioned murders of “the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB)” members in Onitsha last week.

The UAD faulted the Nigerian government and military for not learning from recent history, noting the parallels between the massacre of Muslims in Zaria and unlawful detention of Sheikh Zakzaky to the murder of Boko Haram’s former sect leader Mohammed Yusuf. The UAD stated “the continued detention of El-Zakzaky is in no way justifiable. UAD thus calls for his immediate release and the establishment of a judicial commission of inquiry into the Zaria killings which should include the trade unions and civil society movement.”

Mr. Aye also argued in his statement that the pro-Biafra sentiments in southern Nigeria are linked to the “Nigerian state and the class of bosses who control it, including those from the South Eastern states, have failed the generality of common women, men and youth.” He added that “detaining or killing persons who stand for the secession of ‘Biafra’ is in no way a solution to the secessionist agitation which is now rife in the South East.”

Connected to the failings of the Nigerian government and military are the death sentences given to 66 soldiers for mutiny allegations. The UAD described itself as “shocked” at the verdict considering the wave of “revelations of the ‘armsgate’ [scandal]” which confirms the correctness of their action.

The UAD called for the unconditional pardon and reinstatement of the 66 soldiers involved with these court cases, saying “anything short of this is rabid injustice and utterly condemnable.”
