Politics › Okonjo-Iweala: Oshiomhole After Me Because I Blocked His ‘Dubious N15bn Loan’ by PhockPhockMan(op): 6:03pm On Dec 02, 2015 |
A former minister of finance, Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, has urged the federal government to call the Edo State Governor, Adams Oshiomhole, to order, saying Mr. Oshiomhole is seeking how to link her to the $2.1 billion arms probe. Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala said she had “absolutely nothing” to do with the arms issue.
The Nigerian government has made high profile arrests in connection with an ongoing investigation into the alleged $2.1 billion arms contract. Former National Security Adviser, Sambo Dasuki, was arrested Tuesday.
Mr. Oshiomhole was quoted Wednesday by Leadership newspaper as saying the immediate past finance minister, and former President Goodluck Jonathan, should also be prosecuted as they gave approval for funds to be released.
“The issue is whether the Nigerian president under the constitution has the power to approve funds belonging to local, state and federal government- funds that have not been appropriated by the National Assembly,” Mr. Oshiomhole was quoted by the paper as saying. “That is a criminal offense for which Okonjo-Iweala ought to face criminal prosecution. These things are just discussed and wished away. For me, I will stick for the truth and don’t care what people will say,” he said.
In an emailed statement signed by her spokesperson, Paul Nwabuiku, Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala said that it is an abuse of public office, the judicial process and her human rights for Governor Oshiomhole “whom she stopped from taking a highly suspicious N15 billion loan to make false allegations against her while hiding behind the constitutional immunity granted state governors”.
“As recently confirmed by the Debt Management Office, professional analysis showed that Oshiomhole’s loan request which was based on using low interest World Bank loan to offset high interest commercial loans would have left Edo state with a heavy debt burden and the state would have found it very difficult to pay back,” the former minister said.
The former minister said it was unconscionable for the governor to embark on a “campaign of lies against her because she thwarted his dubious loan request”. She described the governor’s unsubstantiated allegations as a “cynical personalization of the anti-corruption campaign to achieve ignoble objectives”.
“Mrs. Okonjo-Iweala therefore put Mr. Oshiomhole and his ilk on notice that she has briefed her lawyers and that she is ready to explore all legal means, local and international, to defend her name against corrupt and compromised persons,” her spokesperson said. “It has become a pattern of behaviour that each time Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala is internationally recognized, Governor Oshiomhole and his cohorts embark on a cynical and devious ploy of trying to pull her down locally.
“Just last night, December 1, Okonjo-Iweala was honoured at a high profile event attended by Vice President Joe Biden and former President Bill Clinton. Okonjo Iweala was honoured alongside Michael Bloomberg, Bill and Melinda Gates and Mo Ibrahim for their contributions to global development and humanity. “Gov. Oshiomhole and his cohorts should realize that their ill-motivated attempts to taint Dr Okonjo Iweala’s reputation will never succeed!” the statement said. http://www.premiumtimesng.com/news/top-news/194294-oshiomhole-after-me-because-i-blocked-his-dubious-n15bn-loan-bid-okonjo-iweala.html?utm_source=&utm_medium=twitter |

Difficult decision to make by the ruling party. They still remember how they forced the last government through mass protest to dump the subsidy removal despite the fact that they knew that the intention of the government is best for the country. Coming back this early to talk of the the same issue will certainly worsen their already low rating. |

Turkey's army said on Wednesday night it did not know the warplane it downed on the Syrian border was Russian, adding it was ready for "all kinds of cooperation" with the Russian military authorities following the incident, according to AFP. In a statement, the Turkish armed forces also said they had made significant efforts to find and rescue the pilots after the jet was shot down. "The nationality of the plane was not known... and the rules of engagement were automatically used," the Turkish military was quoted by AFP as having said. It added that had invited Russian defense and military attaches to its Ankara headquarters to explain the incident. It also informed Moscow's military authorities of its readiness for "all kinds of cooperation," the statement added. Earlier, the Turkish army released a series of audio recordings of apparent warnings issued to the Russian jet before it was downed near the Syrian border - even as a rescued Russian pilot from the jet claimed Turkey shot with no warning. "This is Turkish Air Force speaking on guard. You are approaching Turkish airspace. Change your heading south immediately," a voice in one of the recordings can be heard saying in English, repeating the message several times. The surviving pilot of the Su-24 bomber shot down on Tuesday said earlier that no warning had been given and the aircraft did not violate the Turkish air space. "There was no warning, not by radio exchange nor visually. There was no contact at all," said navigator Konstantin Murakhtin, who promised to return to duty, adding: "I have to pay back the debt for my commander." Turkey insists that it gave 10 warnings to the Russian plane in five minutes, in claims the U.S. military has backed. Russian President Vladimir Putin on Tuesday branded the incident a "stab in the back committed by accomplices of terrorists". And, on Wednesday, Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said the downing of the fighter jet by Turkey appeared to be a "planned provocation", though he stressed the countries would not go to war over the incident. "We have serious doubts about this being an unpremeditated act, it really looks like a planned provocation," Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said at a press conference in Moscow after speaking with Turkish counterpart Mevlut Cavusoglu. "We do not plan to go to war with Turkey, our attitude toward the Turkish people has not changed," Lavrov added, stressing that Moscow would however "seriously reevaluate" its ties with Ankara. "Such attacks are absolutely unacceptable," he said. http://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/203966

The remains of Prince Abubakar Audu have been buried in accordance with Islamic rites.
There were rumours that he had risen, but his burial dashes the speculation.
His remains were buried at about 2pm as Imams offered prayers.
Before the burial, heavy security was deployed at Audu’s compound as the crowd insisted he was alive.
Former governors George Akume, Abdulkadir Kure, Lucky Igbinidion and Rabiu Kwankwaso attended the interment.
There was wild jubilation over rumours that Audu had resurrected, but no one confirmed seeing him.
Thousands trooped into his home in Ogbonicha as rumours of a revival spread. A mammoth crowd besieged the residence.
Reports said a prophet sought to pray for Audu’s corpse to bring him back to life.
Security inside and family members would have none of it but angry youth broke the door open, according to Premium Times.
The prayer man was successfully taken in as the crowd joined in fervent prayers.
Shouts of Holy Ghost fire and Allahu Akbar rent the air while others wept loudly by the door.
As men and women of faith engage in fervent prayers to bring Audu back to life others were digging his grave in one end of the compound.
As news filtered in that he had risen, grave diggers got discouraged and slowed down work.
The grave diggers re-doubled work until the rumours were dashed with the burial. http://thenationonlineng.net/audu-finally-buried-despite-ressurection-rumor/

Politics › Siege To Dasuki’s Home: AGF Appears In Court Today. by PhockPhockMan(op): 1:36am On Nov 23, 2015 |
ABUJA — The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Mr. Malami Abubakar, SAN, will today, explain to the Federal High Court in Abuja, why the former National Security Adviser, NSA, Col. Sambo Dasuki (retd), has remained under house arrest, despite a court order that permitted him to travel abroad for medical treatment. The appearance of the AGF before the court was sequel to a summon issued on him by Justice Ademola Adeniyi. Justice Ademola, who is presiding over the trial of the erstwhile NSA, maintained that the AGF must appear before him to explain why the court order, dated November 3, was flouted at the behest of the Federal Government. The judge summoned the AGF after Dasuki’s lawyers, led by Mr. Joseph Daudu, SAN, informed the court that armed operatives of the Department of State Services, DSS, had since November 4, barred their client from stepping out of his house. Daudu told the court that the operatives have continued to lay siege to Dasuki’s residence at 13, John Kadiya Street, Asokoro District, Abuja, a development he said made it impossible for him to travel to the United Kingdom to keep an appointment with his doctor. The action of the DSS came a day after the court granted Dasuki three weeks medical leave to travel abroad to take care of his budding cancer, and return to the country before November 26 for the continuation of his trial. Dasuki is answering to a five-count criminal charge bordering on money laundering and his alleged illegal possession of firearms. Meanwhile, the AGF, had at the press briefing in Abuja last Thursday, justified the siege to Dasuki’s home by DSS operatives, saying the action was in public interest. The AGF said the action of the government against Dasuki was not in disobedience to any court order. Stressing that under President Muhammadu Buhari, “there shall not be flouting of court orders,” saying: “In some of these cases, some of these high profile culprits may be involved in multiple cases that might require investigation.” http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/11/siege-to-dasukis-home-agf-appears-in-court-today/ |
