By Joseph Erunke AS the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) struggles to come to terms with the emergence of Senators Bukola Saraki and Ike Ekweremadu as Senate President and Deputy Senate President respectively, against its will, an opposition Peoples Democratic Party senator, Clifford Odia, has boasted that PDP and its members in the upper chamber will protect the leadership of Senate to the end of the ongoing dispensation. To this end, Odia, who is representing Edo Central Senatorial District in the Red Chamber has warned the leadership of the APC, to steer clear of the affairs of the National Assembly, saying attempt by the party to dabble into the matters of the legislature would be strongly resisted by his party and its members. He also boasted that no amount of conspiracy by leaders of the party to remove the Senate President, Bukola Saraki and his deputy, Ike Ekweremadu, will scale through the 8th Senate. Speaking to journalists in Abuja,he insisted that the present leadership in the National Assembly has come to stay, saying the leaders of APC must realize that the National Assembly was an institution with representatives of different political parties. The senator was reacting to recent statement credited to former Kano State governor and senator representing Kano Central, Rabiu Musa Kwakwanso and other aggrieved interest groups that the emergence of the two leaders was faulty. The legislator, who noted that the emergence of the two principal leaders in the Senate was divine, reminded politicians that the era of imposition was over just as he warned those working for their ouster to either accept their emergence or maintain their peace. Speaking specifically in defence of Ekweremadu, who has come under severe attacks from APC leaders, the chartered civil engineer, who recently ventured into politics, said PDP senators will not fold their hands and allow APC losers remove him. “We will defend the mandate of Ekweremadu with every drop of energy we have,” he said. Senator Ordia added: “I do not know why they are bickering and complaining. Senators Bukola Saraki and Ike Ekweremadu got a pan-Nigerian mandate. APC and PDP senators voted for them. Their emergence is divine and we must accept it like that. “These two senators are cerebral politicians and they understand the workings of the National Assembly. I have no doubt about their ability to deliver and stabilise the Senate. Their emergence is not about APC or PDP. It is about a shift from the past. “What Senators Saraki and Ekweremadu need right now is the support of every Nigerian in order to succeed. It is a waste of time, calling for their removal. That will never happen. Instead of wasting precious time, why can’t aggrieved senators just drop their pride and accept their emergence?’’ http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/06/pdp-senators-will-defend-saraki-ekweremadu/ |

Chief Chyna Iwuanyanwu is a chieftain of the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP). He was a member of the Imo State House of Assembly in the Second Republic. He speaks to Correspondent Jude Opara on issues including the developments in the National Assembly which he says show that the APC is not yet a homogenous political party. Excerpts: Why do you think your party failed in the last general election? Well, let me start by saying that no human situation is perfect, and politics is worst because it is a game of interests. PDP was obviously the most national of all the political parties in Nigeria founded by a team of some of the most patriotic minded politicians the country can boast of who came together to fight the military government so that democracy can come to Nigeria. It wasn’t a tribal party, it was truly a Nigerian party and that was why it was called the Peoples Democratic Party and the enthronement of democracy was the principle thing against the army. Now we lost it when we resorted to impunity which the army is noted for, imposition which is anti democratic, insensitivity to the wishes and desires of the people and so we became a Democratic Party without the people while it was supposed to be Peoples Democratic Party. I had warned several times that the greatest problem facing the PDP was not the APC neither was it ACN, it was the people and I knew that the moment we lost the people we will lose the election so as far as I am concerned what we did wrong was the derailment of values, the vision of the original founding fathers of the PDP over the time.
Iwanyanwu Actually the conquest of the PDP was not by CPC or ACN it was by members of PDP, the aggrieved members of PDP who left and the journey for me started when we abandoned the zoning principle. Remember in 2011 when President Yar’Adua died some of us insisted that we must uphold the zoning principle which is the cardinal principle of PDP and that a Northerner should be allowed to finish the tenure of Yar’Adua but that didn’t happen. Jonathan came and we were told it was going to be one term to complete the tenure of Yar’Adua of course we accepted but in 2015 he came up again and that is why you see that there was overwhelming conspiracy by the North, they felt that there was a conspiracy to exclude the North out of the presidency and they came together so both Northerners in the APC, those in the PDP and those even in the government and corridor of power of Jonathan conspired and betrayed him, those are the reasons we lost the election. Now since it is not just about APC or PDP but Nigeria, what is your advice to the ruling party? They should pay me for advice but because I love Nigeria, I think they should avoid the banana peels, they must avoid impunity, they must avoid imposition, they must avoid internal crisis, they have offered Nigerians during their campaigns certain promises Nigerians have a retentive memory and we are going to judge them, their performance or otherwise by the actualization of those promises they have made because our prayer is that it should not be the kind a promise a man makes to a woman on the bed. Many people still argue that the APC is not yet a political party, what is your view on this? I have always said that APC is Angry Peoples Congress since last two years. Now I told you how the PDP came together from the East, the North, the West and the South to form a national democratic party but that is not the same with the APC. The ACN is predominantly a South West party, CPC predominantly a Northern party with their own agenda then of course the Angry members of PDP and of course ANPP and one or two persons from APGA.
Politics is a game of interest, it is an amalgamation of interest groups, they are not friends and they are strange bedfellows therefore there is already conflict sown into the construction of the party and that conflict has already started manifesting because it is like when thieves go to steal, they are united by one agenda, their only agenda was to bring down Jonathan so that they can control government and the resources of Nigeria, that is all. Yes they succeeded but in sharing, the problem has come; the President is CPC, the Vice President is ACN then it came to Senate President and Speaker the ACN wanted to take it again but the New PDP members said ‘no you have taken one, this one has taken two and we should take something’ and they conspired with the PDP members. The PDP at home conspired with the PDP in exile and took over the leadership of the National Assembly and the ANPP is now asking about their own so you see that the APC is not a homogenous political entity. So, are you happy with the emergence of Ike Ekweremadu as the Deputy Senate President under an APC leadership? It is the beauty of democracy we are beginning to see because what happened at the National Assembly shows that no one man can hijack the Nigerian nation which was the agenda of the ACN leader. Secondly it has asserted the independence of the legislature the law says that the members should choose their leaders, it didn’t say that the party should choose the leaders. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/06/sharing-of-the-loot-will-ever-be-a-problem-for-apc-iwanyanwu/ |

major466: The $5 billion pledge to Nigeria is not without strings. The Ultimate target is the creation of a US Command Center (C.O) in Nigeria on the pretex to supplement the MNMTF to fight terrorism in Africa. This gesture will seem noble at first, but surely will spell doom for Nigeria because a command center is basically a military base. The goal of the United States government is to station its military machine in strategic places across the globe for 'Special Duties'. What are these special duties Time will tell. You're not far from the truth. |

Do you still remember USA? That same country that refused to sell arm to Nigeria in exchange for millions of dollars? The US is now supporting supporters of APC' Nigeria with $5bn funds to help them fight Boko Haram, the same Boko Haram they told us are products of bad government policies. USA refused to make profit by selling arms to a potential customer but instead decided to give out $5bn to that same customer for nothing. U.S. donates $5bn to joint task force to fight Boko Haram June 15, 2015 - Premium Times The United States says it has announced a $5 billion contribution to the Multinational Joint Task Force to boost the military operation against the Boko Haram insurgency. The U.S. Assistant Secretary, Bureau of African Affairs, Linda Thomas-Greenfield, announced this at news briefing via telephone from the African Union Summit on Monday. “We have been working with Nigeria as well as the African countries to address their concerns about Boko Haram because we don’t see this as just a Nigerian problem. “We are having discussions with President Buhari on how we might bolster our support. We have already been working with them and providing information. “We are providing some training and support and we’ll love to work with the new administration to see how we might increase the level of support to Nigeria. “At the same time, we’ve just announced at the venue of the AU, five billion dollars contribution to the Multinational Task Force. “We are also providing some equipment and support and we have a number of meetings with the countries who are members of the Multinational Joint Task Force to look at other areas we might support.” Mr. Thomas-Greenfield said that Africa had faced “some really horrendous terrorist attacks” over the past two years. He listed the West Gate and Garissa University attacks in Kenya, and the Boko Haram attacks particularly, the kidnapping of the Chibok girls among others. “While I would not say Africa is under siege, Africa has some major security challenges. “That requires a very strong and very concerted strategic effort by African countries and partners to address the security concerns of Africa.” She said the U.S. is providing a strong support to AU on security as the U.S. has a strong partnership with the continent on security. “We are working closely with the Lake Chad Basin countries: Nigeria, Chad, Niger and Cameroon to address the issues of Boko Haram,” she said. She said that U.S. had so far trained about 250,000 African peacekeepers, saying U.S. highest priority in Africa remained security. The U.S. envoy expressed support to the warrant of arrest issued by the International Criminal Court against Sudan President Omar Al-Bashir. She said that the U.S. frowned at plans by some African leaders to subvert the constitution to extend their terms in office, saying U.S. supports two-term limit in office.
