Politics › PDP Ready For Saraki, Dogara Defection–party Chieftains. by PhockPhockMan(op): 3:16am On Jun 13, 2015 |
Some chieftains of the Peoples Democratic Party, Nigeria’s main opposition party, have said the party will warmly welcome erring members of the All Progressives Congress like Senate President Bukola Saraki and Speaker of the House of Representatives, Yakubu Dogara.
The party chieftains, Senator Sam Egwu; Dr. Akilu Indabawa, a member of the PDP Board of Trustees; and Alhaji Owolabi Olorunoje, Chairman, Lagos State chapter of the PDP, told our correspondent on Thursday that defection of the erring APC members in the National Assembly would amount to paying APC back in its own coin.
Saraki, Dogara and some other APC legislators had gone against the party’s directive by putting themselves up for elections into principal positions in the National Assembly.
Ahmed Lawan and Femi Gbajabiamila were expected to be the only APC candidates presented for the positions of Senate President and Speaker of the House of Representatives while George Akume and Mohammed Munguno, were to be their deputies, respectively.
But since Saraki and Dogara put themselves up for elections and won in their respective chambers against their party’s directive, speculations have been rife that their actions might be laying groundwork for their defection to the PDP.
Incidentally, Saraki and Dogara used to be PDP members before they defected to the APC in 2014.
Saraki has, however, described such insinuation as “absurd and laughable.”
But the PDP chieftains had said they would be welcome to the party should they decide to defect from the APC.
Egwu said, “What has happened now is just speculation about what has happened or what may happen tomorrow but the truth is that they are mature individuals and Saraki has said he’s not defecting but if he comes back to the PDP, we will receive him with open arms.
“People should understand that politics is dynamic and if they feel that they will be given the platform to exercise their fundamental rights more in the PDP, so be it, they should come back to the PDP and we have no qualms with that. After all, they used to be our members.”
He also described APC as ill prepared to be the country’s ruling party, saying the party lacked the vital experience required for the position.
He said, “What is happening shows that the APC is not actually prepared for their victory (at the poll). They forgot that this is not a party convention. The National Assembly is an independent arm of the government and they had to meet as scheduled.
“So it shows a sign of unpreparedness or not knowing the workings of government, for the party to schedule a meeting at the time the National Assembly was supposed to reconvene and have its business.”
In his reaction, Indabawa, who shared a similar view, said, “What is sauce for the goose is sauce for the gander. If APC is getting payment in its own coins, they will be consumed by their own sweat. This is a product of their own machinations against PDP and it is haunting them back.
“That is why when you are planning; don’t ever plan evil against your brother because one day it will haunt you. So it is coming back to haunt them now.
“When they plotted against the PDP using Aminu Tambuwal (immediate former Speaker of the House of Representatives who defected from the PDP to APC) and others, they never thought that they would be in the government as the ruling party. Now they are there, so they are getting paid in the very same coin they produced.”
Olorunoje said, “PDP didn’t kick them out, it was as a matter of choice that they came to the PDP and left the party. PDP is a party that doesn’t belong to anybody; you can come in, register and leave when you want.
“This is the PDP so it’s the peoples’ party. So if he (Saraki) decides to return to the PDP today, he’s most welcome. When APC said the party would sanction their members, it’s like saying what they did was illegal. But what they are doing is not against Saraki and Dogara, it’s against the people of Nigeria.” http://www.punchng.com/news/pdp-ready-for-saraki-dogara-defection-party-chieftains/ |

Rivers State Governor, Nyesom Ezenwo Wike has stated that the composition of his cabinet will be built on capacity, merit and track record of performance, insisting that nobody will be appointed on the platform of mere patronage. Speaking during the swearing-in ceremony of the Secretary to the State Government, Chief of Staff, four commissioners and a special adviser yesterday at the Government House, Port Harcourt, Wike said all those who will serve in his government will have the requisite knowledge to improve the state. Those sworn in included Mr. Kenneth Kobani, Secretary to the State Government, Engr. Emeka Woke, Chief of Staff, Government House, Mr Emma Okah, Commissioner for Housing, Mr Emmanuel Aguma, Attorney-General of the state, Mrs Onimim Jack, Commissioner for Agriculture, Dr Fred Kpakol, Commissioner for Finance and Sir Opunabo Inko-Tariah, Special Adviser on Media and Publicity to the Governor. He urged the new appointees to get down to work and ensure that they deliver on programmes contained in the administration’s blueprint. Wike noted that all appointments so far made by him were targeted at adding value to a state that has faced series of developmental challenges in the recent past. He, particularly, charged the Attorney General of the State, Chinwe Aguma to ensure that there is effective justice delivery in the state. He warned that on no account would the court be closed in the state as was the case with the previous administration. The governor directed the new Finance Commissioner, Dr Fred Kpakol to take proactive measures to ensure judicious application of state finances. Wike urged the Chief of Staff, Engr. Emeka Woke to operate an open door policy which will make the State Government House accessible to all Rivers people, irrespective of political affiliation. http://www.vanguardngr.com/2015/06/wike-swears-in-commissioners-others/ |

Politics › Saraki’s Emergence Not Illegal – NBA President. by PhockPhockMan(op): 4:43am On Jun 12, 2015 |
The President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Mr. Augustine Alegeh (SAN), has said the emergence of Senator Bukola Saraki as the Senate President is not illegal.
About 51 senators of the All Progressives Congress had, on Wednesday, threatened to go to court to challenge Saraki’s emergence.
However, Alegeh told our correspondent during a telephone interview on Thursday that Saraki’s emergence as Senate President was a moral issue and not a legal one.
An APC senator, Barnabas Gemade, had said that the 57 senators that were present when the election for the Senate President took place were not enough to pick a new leadership of the Senate.
However, Alegeh said the 57 senators that were in the chamber when the election of Saraki took place were enough to form a quorum. He explained that having formed a quorum, the decision taken at the time was binding on the Senate.
He said, “Inaugurating the National Assembly is considered as an ordinary business and for an ordinary business, the requirement of a quorum is one-third. So, legally, there was a quorum. You can argue from a moral perspective but legally, it is in order.”
He said, “The general election was held in March/April and we are in June. There was enough time for the party to meet with the lawmakers and agree on all these issues. Why wait till the last minute?
“We must understand that if a time had been fixed for the inauguration, one would expect that all those who want to be inaugurated, given the importance of that event, should have arrived on time. The Clerk of the National Assembly, who is in charge of determining such, said there was a quorum. It will be difficult for me to fault that.
“We must understand that the National Assembly belongs to the entire country and parties from both sides are members of the Assembly. So, for a meeting of one of the parties to lead to the closure of the Assembly would be unfair.”
“There is a need to have respect for institutions. If the Senate was having an inauguration, other people should respect that fact and schedule meetings appropriately. The day for the inauguration of the House is a very important day in a democracy.”
The senior advocate said the incident showed that the National Assembly was becoming increasingly independent.
He said the fact that Saraki emerged Senate President against the wishes of his party did not imply that Saraki would fail.
He said, “The APC were very active in aiding Aminu Tambuwal to become Speaker in 2011 even though the PDP wanted somebody else. And if you look at the performance of Tambuwal, you will find it admirable to a large extent. He was not impeached and there were hardly any threats of impeachment. He had a handle of the House even though he was not the favoured candidate of the party.
“The lesson to learn is that the legislature is becoming increasingly independent of the party and the executive.”
The NBA president said now that elections were over, the National Assembly needed to be more united in order to deliver the change Nigerians demand.
He commended President Muhammadu Buhari for not interfering in the affairs of the legislature. He urged the APC to quickly resolve its internal conflict so as not to make the same mistakes that the PDP did.
He said, “The issue that led to some APC members joining the PDP should not be quickly forgotten.” http://www.punchng.com/politics/sarakis-emergence-not-illegal-nba-president/ |
