darlingtonNYIG: One bad thing about Nigerians is that we don't heed to warnings; the Military categorically stated two days ago that any state under emergency rule prohibits protests, announcements where made on various media houses so why did they flaunt it and come to protest. Well they where told any injury is at their own peril. They should assist the army to disarm the terrorists rather than protest unnecessarily when most of them are the informants for the sect. I have to say those days of good awardable nollywood movies (when i say that i refer to both yoruba and english movies) are far behind us, days of "saworide, "glamour girls ","apoti eri" e.t.c. There are good nollywood films available today but we can't compare to the good old days. What bothers me most these days is the high rate of porn exposure in present movies (not all). This isn't limited to english novies but also yoruba. I remember about ten to eleven years ago when i was still very young. French kiss in english movies was less than 3 seconds while no kisses were featured in yoruba films at all except for hugs and pecks. We can't say the same today, though i understand sometimes the actors have to kiss to make it more realistic, it doesn't have to be a full on grope and press session, even if you want to copy oyinbo's, the way they kiss is much more gentler and paceful than these irritating hollywoods wannabes. Another disturbing trend i've noticed in yoruba movies (don't know about English) is the way they portray rape scenes, it's always so vivid and annoying. Even hollywood doesn't do that and i should no because i researched it. The hollywood protocol says rape scenes must not surpass 3 minutes. I once watched a yoruba film where the rape scene lasted 12 minutes. And they showed it all the screams, blood, the girl's pain accross her face. It was disgusting we had to forward it. Not to mention the fact they put it in advertisement which means it can "pop" up anytime. One day i and my two junior ones and my mum were watching a movie and this rape scene popped up suddenly, we had to hurridely remove the cd. Partly to blame is the Nigerian censors board, i don't even know why it exist if they are not doing anything. Even in the US the cinema's must not allow those whose age haven't reached what's rated to watch the movie. Twilight fans who weren't up to 14 couldn't watch the movie and had to settle for the book until they were of age. Not in Nigeria, anyone has access to this movies and it's seriously dissapointing. Go to a video store in the US and you have to present an ID to verify your age before renting your desired movie. Some of the most annoying of these films are; bold five babes (english) one million boys(yoruba) the lesbians(english) stripper girls (enlish) ile alayo(yoruba) gucci girls(yoruba) Funke onidoti (yoruba) e.t.c...... I also don't like the way present movies tend to glorify armed robbery and prostitution. So many movies these days (especially yoruba) has plots that revolve around female gang groups robbing. They always potray them as cool, practical "big girls" (i wonder what they are teaching us women) e.g "arinzo", "omo ita", "agbara", "ekun meta" There was this yoruba film i watched ile asewo (house of prostitutes) which was all about bare clasted ladies showing us their "stuffs" and their sexual activities with their chiefs and sugadaddies. It had no meaningful plot at all. Mind you it was not a B side movies but had A list yoruba actress. Fathia balogun, iyabo ojo, doris simeon e.t.c The list goes on and on i know it's not ALL nollywood movies but the alarming increase in porn potrayal calls for concern. PS: some of you might call me tribalistic for attacking mostly yoruba films. But just so you know i'm fully yoruba. |
Phder: Why have kids in the first instance? Her action isn't justifiable based on being a slave. The best she could have done was abstaining from having kids, but then again the article says she was raped, I think giving the kids a fair chance of survival would have been the best decision.you have to understand the brutality of slavery to know why she did it. Imagine being worked for hours under the blazing sun wearing just scrapes of clothing, your mouth being padlocked during those times and being fed once daily. Try to escape and you are subjected to severe beatings, female black slaves could be raped at will and nothing would happen. They end up with eligitimate half cast children whom the white father abandons. |
This is the story of a desperate runaway slave mother who tried to kill her children and succeded in killing one to prevent them from going back to slavery. Margaret Garner was born a slave in around 1834 in Kentucky, USA a slave state then. It is believed her father was the white plantation owner who had raped her mother. Margaret married Robert Garner a fellow slave in 1849 and they along with thirteen other people escaped their plantation. She, her husband and her four children (three of whom were believed to have been fathered by her white master who repeatedly raped her). The other members of their party managed to make it to Canada a free state through the underground railway but she was not so lucky. They hid in the home of a local abolitionist a white man who tried to help them escape to Canada but a sudden raid on their hideout led to their arrest. During the confrontation Margaret grabbed a large butcher's knife and stabbed her last born, a toddler to death. She succeded in injuring the other children but didn't kill them before she was subdued. Her trial was high profile then and attracted thousands. There, Margaret proclaimed she had rather see her children dead than see them go through torment as slaves. Her children would have been subjected to more ridicule since they were halfcast who generally faced even more discriminations then and were still considered slaves. Though several abolitionist testified on her behalf and fought for her, two of her children were taken from her and her, her husband and one more daughter were given back to her owner. While crossing the River on their way back, their boat sank and Margaret happily let her last born drown not attempting to rescue her and tried to drown herself though she was unsuccesful. She and Robert were then sold back as field slaves were they were worked and tortured, she died of typhoid fever in 1858. What fascinates a lot of scholars today is that Margaret showed no remorse for the death of her children and during her trial promised that if she ever had children while still being a slave she would continue to kill them. Her story was the basis for the pulitzer winning book "Beloved" by celebrated African American writer Toni Morrison a noble lauraete who researched Margaret's life. Several plays have also been made about her. As we today of learnt the evil of slavery led people to do abominble things......we can't blame the poor woman |
