No you can't grow indeterminate tomatoes in an open field.... You can only grow determinate or semi-determinate tomato in an open field.... Tomato is a very dicey crop, I hope your prepared for it?

we are here to share our own little experience on TOMATO farming and we expect practising farmers and intending farmers on TOMATO to join the discuss, so we can educate the youths on the need to be self employed and make money in farming. Please bear this in mind that agriculture is not A GET RICH QUICK SCHEME. There is prediction of food scarcity next year, so why not get the required technique, knowledge and an entrepreneurial Know-how to succeed in it.

There are two basic reasons i believe why people don't succeed in agribusiness e.g TOMATO FARMING;

1). Basic steps ( Required knowledge)

2). Entrepreneurial mindset ( Economics of the business)

My advice always to people is; you must understudy a practicing farmer and let him mentor you with the right information and tools to succeed in TOMATO agribusiness.

However, i'll be following the set guideline below to share my experience:

1). WHAT to PLANT,
2). WHEN to PLANT
3). HOW to PLANT

which i believe is the core of farming.....

It's actually very possible. Have grown 4 stands of Mydas f1 in my garden before. One thing I noticed is that it has very good continuity in production. Only thing is that you'll need to feed mydas plant very well and use a very very tall stake, if you want to get good results.
First flush of fruit could be up to 6 at once, 2nd flush can comfortably produce 4 fruits with good agronomic practices. I have experienced that. But mind you, it was only 4 stands in my home garden. Replicating such commercially is always a challenge.
Another thing I love about Mydas f1 is that it's 100% parthenocarpic. Read that up if you don't know what it means. smiley

That's why it's production is high, you can get that on monocious or gynocious seed either...

the problem with the cucumbers is CMV or cucumber mosiac virus,it looks like nandini and saira has poor resistance against that, the fruits will have water soaked spots and will spoil immediately after harvest the leafs will also have yellow chlorosis, the best treatment is to change variety
I think its from this batch of seeds they brought into the country because I've being planting this seed for over two years and i've not experience this until last year November till now....my 13plot cucumber farm plus newly installed drip tapes plus workers wages and after everything no result....

Cucumber has dealt with me seriously and I'm considering looking at other crops like garden egg, tomato and pepper.

Besides the cucumber dying too early, several of the fruits keep getting some kind of disease that I'm yet to find someone with concrete information on the cause and remedy.

See attached pictures.

Most of these cucumbers will desintegrate the next day or in two days.

Has anyone had this same issue and found a solution to it?

i had this same issue since last year december till now i'm still having it with my present harvest and its nandini seed from east west. which seed is yours, cos me i dun tire....i complained to one of there rep and he was telling is weather which i know its a lie cos i planted it year before last dry season but never had this issue. all these seed company reaping nigerian farmers.....

Nandini did well but they are a bit darker than saira. The cu986 were so white and some of my buyers didn't like it. But there was serious challenge with the area where the cu986 was planted. I think the problem is with the soil. The yield was poor and after about 4 harvests the fruits were getting yellowish before harvest and I couldn't sell anymore.

I have planted all the thia agro seed and the east west seeds too. i remember saying it that nandini will beat the cu986 and even there cu971 too. their cu971 has low resistance to downy mildew and it doesnt produce that much, its a waste of money for people like me, i will always recommend nandini any day, i can even say it might beat there cu999 too....

Sorry for the late response, I have been unavailable for a while now. Was the velum prime used for bacterial wilt or for nematode attack. And what variety did you cultivate
I planted MOANA from TECHNISM........My tomatoes was actually wilting and i did a little research and found out that velum prime can control bacterial wilt and nematodes too, that's if you detect it on time, which i believe i did and I'm yet to see another plant wilt.......

Cedagrochemical:

What your plants suffered from is bacterial wilt and not nematodes. Velum prime can't control bacterial wilt, don't bother wasting your money on that.

Bacterial wilt has no cure but can be prevented. The only way to prevent it is to plant a Bacterial wilt resistant variety

Different varieties have different degree of resistance to Bacterial wilt. I have been opportuned to try 3 different varieties and I can tell you that Padma F1 has the highest resistance to Bacterial wilt manifestation.

As regards Nematode attack, there are varieties that are also resistant to nematodes, Padma is one of it, Cobra, Thorgal, Rambo etc If you are cultivating a nematode resistant variety, you really don't need a nematicide but if at all you must use it, there are different options in the market. Furadan, wormforce, Orizon, velum etc

As a small scale farmer cultivating less than an acre of tomatoes, go for Agrochemicals that fits your budget and still give great results. The higher your spending, the higher your cost of production and the lesser your profit

the velum prime i applied worked perfectly well...so what's your take on it?
Agriculture / Re: 500,000 Naira From One Plot Of Land In 90 Days. by pipi84(m): 6:03pm On Oct 31, 2020
ideepaul:
the nematicide is VELUM PRIME cc: emmafly, farm tech, Okoroemeka
It's about 20k+ for a litre, but I was told it's very effective even when the crops are already infected, and can be applied through drips. Pls I have not used it before o
I have being in cucumber for sometime and decided to add tomato to it last year on pilot and 2plot and now 10plot......the major disaster you can get it in your farm bacterial wilt which starts with nematodes doing justice to the root of the tomatoes before the bacterial finishes the work....one mistake i did was thinking, if build a nursery and treat my seedlings well before transplanting i wont have that attack but i just experienced it lately in my farm for two weeks with me loosing over 50 of my tomato plant and the worst is, it attacked the once bearing bigger fruits more and funny enough i couldn't get a hold of velum prime nematicide to tackle it on time because of the protest and the 24hrs curfew but i was able to get it last week and applied it. now i have peace of mind cos it worked...my advice is, apply velum prime before transplanting to be safe.....there seeds that have resistance to nematode but still apply nematicide to be on safer side. one kobo experience....
