In a campaign pledge certain to question his grasp of the Nigerian economy, the presidential candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC), Major-General Muhammadu Buhari (rtd), on Monday promised to ensure that the naira would be equal to the dollar in value if voted into office. The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reported that Buhari said this during the south-east presidential rally of the party at Dan Anyiam Stadium, Owerri. “It is sad that the value of the naira has dropped to more than N230 to one dollar. This does not speak well for the nation’s economy,” he said without any indication that he stated how he is going to achieve this naira-dollar parity. He urged the people to vote for APC, noting that he would ensure that corruption was tackled headlong if elected. Earlier, the Governor of Imo State, Chief Rochas Okorocha, had urged APC supporters to vote for the party’s candidates at all levels, noting that a vote for Buhari without support to others at the state would amount to nothing. Okorocha said Buhari would address the problem of electricity, bring back the kidnapped Chibok girls and promote industrial growth. He said that Buhari was loved by the people in the region and urged them to elect him and other APC candidates during the March 28 and April 11 general election. Former Governor of Anambra, Dr. Chinwoke Mbadinuju, and Chinwe Obaji, former Minister of Education, were formally welcomed to the APC at the rally. Here it is: The idea of clamping high duties on cheaper higher quality imports in not new. Every country including the United States does it, and for less developed countries, it is the ONLY way. That is how China got to where they are in the first place. They clamped down on cheap foreign good except books in the 1970/80s. So this idea is a good one, but the dumpties in Abuja don't know how it is done. Fact #1. You cannot leap frog technology and manufacturing. You must grow through the stages, and in a country with Nigeria's population and income, it can be achieved in record time. The government would start with clamping down on all easily manufactured machines and goods - generators, motorcycles, fans, all kinds of bicycles, refrigerators and give tax breaks and enabling environment for entrepreneurs in this line of business. Give a short time frame to move to the next level of clamp down. If the first is successful, then people know the government is serious, and more investors will line up for the next stage. Fact #2 You cannot succeed with leaking borders Call a meeting and read a riot act to all senior Customs officer in Abuja. Give four months and fire the head of Customs for poor performance. Replace him, and if the next individual fails to block the borders, fire him until you get a performer. (At this point, the world will take notice and some secretly won't like that. When you see that, you know you are on the right track. Stick to your guns) I believe we have most of what it takes to get there. We are doing most of the #1 already(NEW, Thermocool, etc) but the key components e.g. two stroke engine blocks(motorcycle and generators), compressors, are still imported, that is the problem. Chinese, Koreans and others will be compelled to set up manufacturing plants here. From there we can up the ladder to bigger and bigger things - Cars. Not starting with stupid assembly of knocked down vehicles. |

found this somewhere - If that is his intention(don't know) then he has failed to realise that the Nigerian Army of today is different from the immediate post civil war army - which to a very great extend, OBJ himself realigned, and the current army chief is from the SE, and the president is from Niger Delta. A coup attempt is tantamount to suicide, and even if it's successful will be the end of Nigeria as we know it. 1 Like |
