Fresh questions are emerging over the role of government in the increasing intersection between public institutions and partisan political activities in Ebonyi State, following allegations that officials of Ebonyi State University (EBSU) were directed to mobilise staff and students for political endorsement events linked to Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru.

The controversy, which has generated intense conversations within academic, political, and civil society circles, took a new dimension after the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) accused the state government of fostering an environment in which public institutions allegedly feel compelled to align themselves with partisan political objectives.

At the heart of the debate is a question that many stakeholders believe requires a clear answer:

Is Governor Francis Nwifuru aware of these activities, and if he is, does he approve of them?

The question may appear simple, but its implications are far-reaching.

If the reported directives and mobilisation efforts were undertaken without the knowledge of the Governor, analysts say the development raises concerns about the conduct of public officials acting in his name.

However, if such activities enjoy official approval, critics argue that even more fundamental questions arise regarding institutional independence, academic freedom, and the appropriate relationship between government and public educational institutions.

The PDP, in a strongly worded reaction, argued that the controversy is no longer merely about an endorsement event.

According to the opposition party, it is increasingly becoming a test of the administration's commitment to democratic principles and institutional autonomy.

The party contends that universities are designed to nurture critical thinking, intellectual independence, and the free exchange of ideas—not to function as arenas for political mobilisation.

Observers note that public universities occupy a unique position in society because they are expected to remain centres of scholarship irrespective of the political disposition of those in power.

This is why the allegations have attracted attention beyond partisan politics.

For many stakeholders, the issue is not whether Governor Nwifuru deserves political support.

Rather, it is whether public institutions should be perceived as participating in the process of generating such support.

Some commentators have argued that the strongest endorsement any political leader can receive is the voluntary confidence of citizens expressed at the ballot box.

Viewed from that perspective, questions naturally arise whenever state institutions appear connected to organised political endorsement campaigns.

Political analysts say the controversy has also exposed a broader concern about governance culture in the state.

In recent months, reports of endorsement gatherings involving various social, professional, and community groups have become increasingly common.

While such endorsements are not unusual in Nigerian politics, critics argue that concerns begin to emerge when public officials, civil servants, educational institutions, or government-funded structures are perceived to be involved.

For the PDP, this is where the Governor's role becomes central.

The party argues that if Governor Nwifuru believes in the independence of institutions, he should publicly discourage any practice that creates the impression that universities, schools, ministries, agencies, or public servants are being drawn into partisan political activities.

The opposition maintains that silence on such allegations risks creating the perception of approval.

The controversy has also generated questions within the university community itself.

Several stakeholders have reportedly expressed concerns about what they describe as the gradual erosion of the traditional boundaries separating academic administration from partisan politics.

Education advocates warn that universities derive their credibility not from their closeness to power but from their ability to maintain intellectual independence from it.

This reality has prompted renewed calls for key stakeholders to clarify their positions.

Questions are now being directed at the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU), and the Student Union Government (SUG).

Do these bodies consider the reported mobilisation compatible with the ideals of a modern university?

Do they believe educational institutions should participate in political endorsement activities?

And if they disagree with such practices, why has there been little public resistance?

Beyond the university environment, the debate is increasingly becoming a referendum on the future of public institutions in Ebonyi State.

Should government institutions remain politically neutral?

Should public servants be insulated from partisan expectations?

Should educational establishments maintain a clear separation from political campaigns?

These are the questions now dominating public discourse.

Meanwhile, the PDP insists that the issue transcends party politics and concerns the preservation of institutional integrity.

The party argues that once public institutions become associated with partisan objectives, public confidence in their neutrality may begin to decline.

Supporters of the government, however, may contend that political leaders often receive endorsements from various groups and organisations as part of the democratic process.

Yet even among neutral observers, one question continues to persist:

Where should the line be drawn between legitimate political support and the perceived deployment of public institutions for political purposes?

As pressure mounts for clarification, attention is increasingly shifting to Governor Nwifuru himself.

Will the Governor publicly distance his administration from the allegations?

Will he reaffirm the independence of universities and other public institutions?

Or will the silence continue to fuel speculation about the extent of official involvement?

For now, those questions remain unanswered.

But in the court of public opinion, they may ultimately become more significant than the endorsement activities that first triggered the controversy.

Governor Francis Nwifuru has assured the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members posted to
Ebonyi state of adequate security of their lives and enabling environment to discharge their national service.

Nwifuru gave the assurance during the swearing-in ceremony of the 2026 NYSC Batch B, Stream 1 corps members posted to Ebonyi, noting that security was one of his adminstration's top priorities.

The governor represented by the Permanent Secretary in the state Ministry of Youth Development and Sports, Mr Hillary Obiesie, maintained that Ebonyi Is one of the safe destinations in Nigeria

"My administration realises that sustainable development can only thrive in an environment of peace and security.

"This realisation continues to guide our policies and investments in security architecture, community engagement and protection of lives and property,"

He said that the safety which Ebonyi provides, enables residents, investors, visitors and young professionals seeking opportunities; to grow and excel.

"International travel advisories including those issued by the United State of America did not designate Ebonyi among high-risk locations.

"This reflects the relative peace, stability and security that have become defining factors of our state.

"This is also a teastament of the collective efforts of our security agencies, traditional institution and law--abiding citizens,"

He urged the corps members to let their service year be defined by excellence, discipline, innovation and genuine commitment to positive change.

"You should be ambassadors of unity, agents of development and examples of values that would move Nigeria forward,"

The NYSC Coordinator in Ebonyi, Mrs Maidariya Malgwi disclosed that 1,160 corps members comprising 561 males and 599 females have been duly registered and ready to take the service oath of allegiance.

Malgwi welcomed the corps members to Ebonyi, informing them that the orientation course marks the beginning of a defining chapter of their lives.

"I encourage you to participate actively in all camp activities and embrace the opportunities of learning, personal development, discipline and upholding the ideals of the corps,"

Mr Patrick Jacobs, one of the corps members thanked God for granting them safe trip to Ebonyi and pledged to contribute his quota to the state's development.

The Umuekumenyi Leaders' Council, a socio-political group, has endorsed Chief Ifeanyi-Chukwuma Odii, governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the state, as its preferred candidate ahead the 2027 elections.

Odii, a businessman popularly known as "AnyiChuks," was also the PDP's governorship candidate in the 2023 election.

The endorsement was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of a stakeholders' meeting held in Abakaliki on Saturday.

The communiqué was signed by the council's spokesperson, Mr Emmanuel Nwobo.

Our correspondent reports that the council comprises community leaders, professionals, youth representatives, women leaders, stakeholders and other citizens from the Umuekumenyi area.

Nwobo explained that the meeting was convened to assess the socio-economic and political situation in Ebonyi State and chart a pathway for the state's future development.

The council decried what it described as declining governance standards, worsening economic conditions, rising youth unemployment and a perceived slowdown in developmental activities across the state.

The stakeholders maintained that the future leadership of Ebonyi should be determined by competence, capacity, vision, accountability and proven performance, rather than zoning arrangements, political sentiments or geographical considerations.

"The development and progress of Ebonyi can no longer be subjected to trial-and-error leadership.

"The overriding criteria for leadership selection must be competence, integrity, vision and commitment to good governance," they stated.

The stakeholders also urged the state government to address pressing economic challenges confronting residents, including the rising cost of living, unemployment and dwindling business opportunities.

"There must be greater citizen engagement in governance and a renewed commitment to the developmental vision of the state's founding fathers," the council said.

On the 2027 governorship election, the stakeholders welcomed the emergence of aspirants from different parts of the state, describing it as a positive development for democratic participation.

They, however, stated that Odii remains "the most credible alternative" for Ebonyi's leadership at this time.

According to the stakeholders, Odii's private-sector background, leadership experience and commitment to development place him in a strong position to drive economic growth and improve governance in the state.

The minister of works, Senator David Umahi, has described the ongoing legacy infrastructure projects of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu across the country as critical catalysts for economic development, urging Nigerians to support the president's re-election bid in 2027 to consolidate the gains of his administration.

Umahi made the remarks during an inspection tour of ongoing federal road projects in Ebonyi State alongside a presidential delegation led by the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Media and Strategy, Mr. Bayo Onanuga.

The minister expressed satisfaction with the pace and quality of work on the projects, noting that many of them would be completed and commissioned before the end of 2026.

According to him, the projects are strategically designed to boost economic activities, facilitate the movement of goods and services, and improve connectivity across regions.

"These projects are not just roads; they are economic corridors that will transform lives, stimulate commerce, and enhance national integration. Nigerians, particularly those in the South-East, should support President Tinubu's re-election so that these developmental strides can be sustained," Umahi said.

One of the projects inspected was the Mkumuru Road, a key section linked to the Abakaliki-Ebonyi-Benue Super Highway.

The road traverses several communities, including Mkumuru, Ukwuachi, Ishieke, and terminates at Beke-Ishieke, where it connects to the Trans-Sahara Highway corridor.

Providing details of a major flyover project along the route, the acting federal controller of works in Ebonyi State, Mr. Maxwell Oko, explained that the project comprises a flyover stretching approximately 900 meters with additional connecting ramps extending over two kilometers.

He said the project was designed to decongest traffic and support economic activities in a region renowned for agricultural production and solid mineral resources.

"The primary objective is to facilitate the transportation of agricultural produce, especially rice and other farm products, as well as minerals such as granite and lead, to neighboring states and markets across the country," Oko stated.

Speaking during the inspection, the managing director of AgeLink Group, Ogbuefi Enekwachi, disclosed that the N25 billion flyover project was awarded to AgeLink Nigeria Limited in May 2025.

He revealed that despite the absence of mobilization funds from the federal government, the company had continued construction work based on confidence in the administration's commitment to infrastructure development.

"We have not received a single naira as mobilization for this project, yet we have made significant progress. We believe in the vision of President Tinubu and the leadership of the Minister of Works. This project has already changed the lives of the people in this area, and they are excited about its impact," Enekwachi said.

Responding, Umahi acknowledged the contractor's commitment and assured that all certified payments would be honored.

"We are creditworthy. Contractors working on federal projects will be paid. We encourage them to continue because we are determined to commission this project by December.

"This initiative is only the beginning of the legacy projects that President Tinubu is delivering across the South-East and other parts of the country," he said.

The minister further explained that the flyover was strategically located at a major intersection along the Trans-Sahara Route to eliminate traffic conflicts and improve the flow of vehicles towards Abakaliki and other adjoining highways.

Also inspected was the ongoing Calabar–Ebonyi–Benue–Nasarawa–Abuja Super Highway project.

The Federal Controller of Works stated that the 118.85-kilometer highway project was awarded to Infoquest International Limited at a contract sum of N445.851 billion.

He noted that the road forms part of the federal government's ambitious infrastructure renewal program aimed at enhancing regional connectivity, promoting trade, and unlocking economic opportunities across the country.

The inspection tour formed part of the federal government's efforts to monitor progress on key infrastructure projects and ensure timely delivery in line with President Tinubu's Renewed Hope Agenda.

Fresh concerns have emerged over the economic direction of Ebonyi State following the release of a comprehensive governance assessment by the opposition Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), which alleges that despite unprecedented public revenues flowing into the state, poverty and hardship are becoming more widespread across communities.

In what appears to be one of the most detailed critiques of the current administration's performance since assuming office, the PDP's First Quarter 2026 State of the State Assessment raises troubling questions about the effectiveness of government spending, the management of public resources, and the growing disconnect between official claims and the realities experienced by ordinary citizens.

The report, released by the PDP Media Centre and signed by the party's State Publicity Secretary and Spokesperson, Prince (Hon.) Darlington Peter Onwe, is based on findings from the Ebonyi Governance Impact and Poverty Status Survey (EGIPS Survey Q1-2026), community consultations, field assessments, and citizen engagements conducted across the thirteen local government areas of the state.

At the heart of the report is a question the opposition says is increasingly being asked in homes, markets, villages, churches, and urban centres throughout the state:

"Why are the people becoming poorer while government revenues continue to increase?"

According to the PDP, this question has become the defining governance challenge confronting Ebonyi today.

The report alleges that while monthly allocations from the Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) continue to rise for both the state government and the thirteen local government councils, there is little visible evidence that the increased revenues are translating into improved living conditions for the majority of citizens.

The party argues that the growing hardship experienced by residents stands in sharp contrast to the volume of public funds available to government.

Among the concerns highlighted are rising youth unemployment, struggling small businesses, increasing household poverty, declining purchasing power, and what the report describes as a growing atmosphere of economic uncertainty.

According to the assessment, many families now find it increasingly difficult to meet basic needs such as food, healthcare, transportation, and education.

The report further claims that signs of economic distress have become more visible across the state, citing increased street begging, child labour, and the growing number of women and young people undertaking physically demanding jobs under harsh conditions to support their households.

While emphasizing the dignity of labour, the PDP argued that such developments raise important questions about the effectiveness of existing economic policies and social protection measures.

The opposition party also drew attention to the issue of educational exclusion, describing it as a looming social crisis.

Referencing findings from the 2025 National Out-of-School Children Survey conducted in Ebonyi State, the report warned that the growing number of children outside the classroom should concern policymakers and stakeholders alike.

According to the PDP, educational exclusion represents not only a social challenge but also an economic threat capable of undermining the state's future productivity and competitiveness.

Beyond highlighting current challenges, the report questions what it describes as the absence of a clear economic vision for the state.

The party asked a series of pointed questions regarding industrialization, investment attraction, wealth creation, and job generation.

"Where are the industries capable of creating large-scale employment? Where is the economic master plan? Where are the strategic investments that should stimulate growth and attract private capital?" the report queried.

The PDP contends that many residents increasingly perceive governance as being driven more by political activities and public image management than by measurable economic outcomes capable of improving the welfare of citizens.

The report further alleges that a widening gap now exists between government narratives and public experience, with many respondents expressing frustration over what they view as a lack of tangible economic progress despite years of public expenditure.

Political observers note that the assessment touches on a sensitive issue that resonates with many Nigerians across the country: the demand for accountability in the management of public resources.

With rising allocations accruing to subnational governments following recent fiscal reforms, citizens are increasingly demanding evidence that public revenues are producing measurable improvements in infrastructure, employment, education, healthcare, and economic opportunity.

The PDP insists that the future of Ebonyi lies not in political rhetoric but in productive investments, industrial expansion, agricultural modernization, youth empowerment, educational advancement, private sector development, and transparent governance.

According to the party, the state possesses enormous human and natural resources capable of driving transformational growth if properly harnessed.

"The challenge is no longer one of potential," the report concludes. "The challenge is leadership priorities, economic vision, policy direction, and accountability."

As debates over governance and economic performance continue to intensify, the report is expected to generate fresh public scrutiny regarding the impact of government spending and the effectiveness of current development strategies.

For many residents facing mounting economic pressures, however, the central issue remains straightforward: whether increasing public revenues are truly improving the quality of life of ordinary Ebonyians.

That question, the opposition argues, deserves clear answers.

Over 30,000 Market Women in Ebonyi state, cut across Ebonyi North, Central, South and residents under the leadership of State President, Mrs Patience Nwali have reaffirm their unalloyed commitment to ensure that the incumbent Governor of the state, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru and other candidates of All Progressives Congress emerge victorious in the forthcoming 2027 general election.

Mrs Nwali disclosed this while addressing Journalists on how formidable the Market Women are in supporting the Governor to ensure that his people's Charter of Needs mantra of his leadership is actualized.

She added that the Governor has touched lives and has empowered Ebonyi people in different capacity especially the market women.

"Before now, some of our market women were selling under the rain and sunshine with just a goods on the table but today our women have their own shops and good loaded in it courtesy of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru who is a God sent to our market women.

"Some of our women who own shop before and now importers and those who are importers and now both importers and exporters". She added.

The Market Women Association further declared its support for the re-election bid of Governor Francis Nwifuru in the 2027 general elections, pledging to mobilize thousands of votes across the state to ensure his victory.

She dismissed claims of a crisis within the association, insisting that the group remains united and committed to supporting the governor's administration.

According to her, Governor Nwifuru's performance in office, particularly in infrastructure development and educational advancement through scholarship programmes, has earned him the confidence and support of market women across the state.

"We are here to commend the good work of Governor Francis Nwifuru for the remarkable achievements recorded in Ebonyi State, especially in programmes that have positively impacted market women," she said.

"Ebonyi market women are very proud of him. We have endorsed him and we are reaffirming our commitment to vote massively for him in 2027.

"I have mobilized women across the 13 local government areas and the 171 wards of the state."

Mrs. Nwali disclosed that members of the association have commenced efforts to encourage women to obtain and register their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) ahead of the election.

"Our women are collecting and registering for their voter cards to ensure that come 2027, Governor Francis Nwifuru will be re-elected," she stated.

She called on Ebonyi residents to support the governor's administration, describing it as one that deserves continuity.

"We are using this medium to call on all Ebonyians and peace-loving people of the state to join hands in ensuring that the good governance brought by Governor Nwifuru is sustained for eight years," she added.

Also speaking, the State Secretary of the association, Mrs. Rita Anyigor, reiterated the group's support for the governor, citing his developmental strides across the state.

"We are strongly in support of the second-term re-election of Governor Francis Nwifuru because of the good work he has been doing for our people," she said.

"What we are showing him is that, come rain or shine, he will win the 2027 election. We are standing firmly behind him and will deliver our votes". She added.

Mrs. Anyigor assured the governor that the association's support remained unwavering.

"Our votes are intact for him. We will mobilize not only ourselves but also our husbands, children, relatives and friends to support his re-election," she said.

She further revealed that the association is collaborating with stakeholders at the grassroots to ensure that eligible women in rural communities obtain or update their voter registration records.

"If there is anyone who has not collected their PVC, we are encouraging them to visit their local government areas and obtain it," she said.

"I am confident that stakeholders across the wards are making arrangements to bring officials of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) closer to the people for registration and voter card updates."

According to her, such efforts would enable those who have lost their voter cards or wish to transfer and update their registration details to do so before the next general election.

In separate remarks, some members of the association, including Mrs. Nkechi Obinna from Afikpo North, Mrs. Ngozi Abba from Ebonyi Central and Mrs. Azim Veronica from Ebonyi North, also reaffirm their support.

They also endorsed Governor Nwifuru for a second term, expressing confidence in his leadership and achievements since assuming of office.

A chieftain of the Labour Party and the party’s elected secretary in Ebonyi State, Comrade Innocent Igiri, who is also a two-term acting chairman of the party, has declared support for the re-election of Governor Francis Nwifuru in the 2027 general elections.

Igiri disclosed the endorsement following what he described as an expanded meeting with coordinators of his political structure across the 13 local government areas of the state.

He said the decision was collectively reached to consolidate on what he described as Governor Nwifuru’s achievements in peace-building, infrastructure development, and human capital advancement within his three years in office.

"I have endorsed Governor Nwifuru for the 2027 general elections; the resolution is for all of us, FON all the way." He further praised the governor’s leadership style, describing him as accessible and people-orientated. According to him,

"We have a governor that listens to the people, apart from his other achievements in peacebuilding, education, human and capital development, infrastructure, among others."

"He has ears, a governor that is reachable, and a governor that has never arrested an opposition leader. He is a governor that has value to people who are criticising his government. "

Igiri also dismissed criticisms from what he described as internal political opponents, insisting that his group would not be swayed by their pressure to reconsider their stands.

"I don't want to care about what those known transactional politicians would say; transactional to the core, they want to tell us what positions to take to align."

He further emphasised that his political structure remains committed to justice, fairness, and equity, stressing that the endorsement reflects a collective decision.

"We are people born out of struggle; we are people that are known to fight for justice, equal rights and equity and fairness, and this time, it's the resolution of the structure that is with me in Ebonyi State, whether they like it or not."

Igiri also alleged attempts by some individuals to influence members of his structure to abandon the endorsement, saying such efforts would not succeed.

"I have people chatting with me privately and calling my different coordinators of local government and other places trying to speak to me about the decision of the organised structure we have to support Governor Nwifuru for 2027.

"They should not bother themselves because this is a righteous moment for the betterment of Ebonyi State."

This development adds to the growing political realignments ahead of the 2027 general elections in the state.

More than 10 members of the Umunkpumente Kindred in Ihie Autonomous Community, Ishiagu, in Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, who were recently attacked during a meeting, have called on Governor Francis Nwifuru, the Commissioner of Police, CP Hope Urunwa Okafor, and the Director of the Department of State Services (DSS) to ensure the arrest and prosecution of those responsible for the incident.

The victims alleged that they came under attack while holding a meeting at the residence of the late Fabian Okonkwo, who was reportedly murdered on April 16, 2026, by suspected assailants. They claimed that the deceased had earlier received threats from certain members of the community before his death.

Speaking with journalists in the community, some of the victims alleged that the crisis escalated after members of the Umunkpumente Kindred petitioned Governor Nwifuru and the Commissioner of Police, requesting a thorough investigation into the killing of Okonkwo and the arrest of those behind the murder.

One of the victims and Chairman of the Umunkpumente Kindred, Mr. Christopher Okonkwo, narrated the events leading to the crisis. According to him, the late Fabian Okonkwo had sought permission in April 2026 to bury his deceased in-law on his property at Ekembe in Ihie Autonomous Community, where he resided.

He explained that the late Okonkwo approached the President-General of the town union, Mr. Chijoke Ume, to inform him of the proposed burial arrangement. However, he alleged that the President-General objected to the plan and warned him against proceeding with it.

According to Christopher, the deceased subsequently approached the traditional ruler of Ihie Autonomous Community, Eze Gabriel Okoro, who granted approval for the burial after confirming that the land belonged to the late Okonkwo and that his family had consented to the arrangement.

He further stated that shortly after obtaining the approval and returning home, gunmen allegedly stormed the residence of Fabian Okonkwo in the early hours of April 16 and shot him multiple times in the head, killing him before help could arrive.

Christopher maintained that no property was stolen during the attack, leading family members to suspect that the killing was a targeted assassination rather than a robbery operation.

He also alleged that the Chairman of Ivo Local Government Area, Chief Emmanuel Ajah, alongside the Divisional Police Officer in the area, removed the corpse and deposited it in a mortuary without formally informing members of the deceased's kindred.

According to him, after several weeks without any visible breakthrough in the investigation, members of the kindred petitioned the Governor and the Commissioner of Police, drawing attention to earlier threats allegedly made against the deceased by the President-General of the community.

He added that the President-General and his secretary, Kenneth Kalu, were subsequently arrested by the police.

Recounting further developments, Christopher alleged that on June 3, 2026, the council chairman contacted him and urged him to facilitate the release of the arrested individuals.

He said he informed the chairman that the petition was a collective decision of the kindred and not a personal initiative, but alleged that pressure continued for the petition to be withdrawn.

He further claimed that on June 5, some youths led by one Emeka Chukwuemeka allegedly invaded his residence in his absence and vandalized several of his belongings.

According to him, the youths later encountered his uncle's wife, Mrs. Kate Irochi, and instructed her to deliver a message warning him to secure the release of the detained individuals within 24 hours or face consequences.

Christopher stated that members of the kindred had scheduled a meeting at the residence of the late Fabian Okonkwo on June 7 to discuss welfare support for the deceased's family, particularly his aged mother.

He alleged that while the meeting was ongoing, more than 100 youths from three other kindreds stormed the venue and attacked participants.

According to him, about 10 persons sustained injuries during the incident, while one motorcycle was burnt, two others were damaged, and a shop belonging to Mr. Onwulandu Mbazu was allegedly looted and vandalized.

He appealed to Governor Nwifuru and the Ebonyi State Police Command to investigate what he described as repeated attacks on members of the Umunkpumente Kindred.

He further alleged that a similar incident occurred on August 31, 2024, resulting in injuries and the destruction of several shops.

Another victim, Mr. James Ifeanyi, who serves as the Financial Secretary of the kindred, accused the Youth President of Ihie Autonomous Community, Kelvin Chukwuemeka, and a Special Assistant to the Local Government Chairman, Festus Nwafor, of leading the attack.
He alleged that the assailants arrived armed with dangerous weapons and unleashed violence on members of the kindred.

"Those who attacked me are known people to me. Some of them includes, Kelechi Mkpa, Orji Ugochukwu and Orji Christian."

James further alleged that the attack and subsequent protests were aimed at frustrating ongoing investigations into the murder of the late Fabian Okonkwo. He called on security agencies to apprehend and prosecute those responsible.

Reacting to the allegations, the Chairman of Ivo Local Government Area, Chief Emmanuel Ajah, told journalists that the killing of Fabian Okonkwo had been reported to the police and that investigations were ongoing.

Meanwhile, the Police Public Relations Officer of the Ebonyi State Command, SP Joshua Ukandu, confirmed the arrest of the community President-General and his secretary, adding that normalcy had been restored in the area.

Ukandu expressed concern over the attack and protests, questioning why individuals would resort to violence over the arrest and interrogation of persons linked to an ongoing murder investigation.

"Unfortunately, we are yet to conclude investigation on the matter and the youths are protesting and attacking people. They should have allowed the police to conclude their investigation and if they suspect foul play, then they have the right to complain."

The internal crisis rocking the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) in Ebonyi State has taken a dramatic turn as the State Secretary of the party, Chinedu Adum, accused the state leadership of compromising the party's structure and warned of a looming mass exodus of members if urgent corrective measures are not taken.

Adum, who spoke during a media briefing, alleged that the state chairman and the organizing secretary had compromised the integrity of the party through actions driven by personal interests and inducements.

"We Built the Party, They Hijacked It, we cannot stay and watch evil taking place"

He maintained that loyal members who worked tirelessly to establish and sustain the party in Ebonyi State were being sidelined and unfairly treated.

The party secretary disclosed that concerned stakeholders had already passed a vote of no confidence on the state chairman and had commenced consultations across ward, local government and state levels to determine their next line of action.

According to him, petitions and complaints detailing the grievances of party members had been forwarded to the National Working Committee (NWC), zonal leaders and other critical stakeholders of the party.

Adum further alleged that the Ebonyi chapter of the NDC had been hijacked by former Governor Dr. Sam Egwu and his associates, whom he accused of attempting to seize control of structures built by longstanding party faithful.

He lamented the failure of the party's primary election scheduled for May 30, 2026, describing it as a major setback for members who had invested their resources and confidence in the party.

He argued that many founding members sacrificed time, energy and finances to build the NDC when it had little political relevance in the state.

According to him, "allowing new entrants to dominate the party at the expense of its pioneers could destabilize the party and discourage committed members from remaining in its fold.

In one of his strongest remarks, Adum alleged that substantial sums were collected from aspirants ahead of the aborted primary election.

He advised affected aspirants to demand refunds from party officials, warning that legal action remained an available option for anyone unable to recover funds paid for the conduct of the exercise.

While emphasizing that his group was not interested in escalating the dispute through prolonged litigation, he noted that court action could become inevitable if the national leadership failed to intervene and address the issues raised by aggrieved members.

He stressed that the credibility and future of the party depended on transparency, due process and respect for the decisions of duly recognized party organs.

The embattled secretary also criticized what he described as the increasing influence of external political actors within the NDC, warning that such developments could undermine the party's chances in future elections.

He urged the national leadership to take swift action to prevent the crisis from worsening and to restore confidence among party members.

Adum warned that failure to address the concerns of stakeholders could trigger a mass resignation of members across the state, further deepening the party's internal divisions ahead of the 2027 general elections. He insisted that the struggle was aimed at protecting the integrity of the party and ensuring that the sacrifices of its founding members were not rendered meaningless.

All efforts to reach the Former Governor of the state, Dr Sam Egwu proved abortive as he was busying his calls.

The National Democratic Congress (NDC) has dismissed ongoing protests and purported candidates' lists circulating on social media regarding its Ebonyi State primaries, describing the demonstrators as "rented protesters" allegedly sponsored by political interests outside the party.

The party's reaction comes amid controversy surrounding the yet-to-be-announced outcome of the Ebonyi Central Senatorial District primary election. Earlier, the NDC had urged the public to ignore what it described as a hired crowd that protested at the party's national secretariat in Abuja over the conduct and outcome of the senatorial primary, insisting that the demonstrators were neither party members nor representatives of the party's position.

In a fresh statement signed by the Ebonyi State Publicity Secretary of the party, Comrade Okereke Nnanna, the NDC said its attention had been drawn to various publications and purported lists claiming to contain the names of candidates for elective positions in the state.

The party, while clarifying that no official announcement had been made regarding the emergence or endorsement of candidates for any position in Ebonyi State, urged party members, supporters, and the general public to disregard all such publications.

"The Party hereby categorically states that no official announcement has been made regarding the emergence or endorsement of candidates for any position in Ebonyi State. Consequently, all such lists, results, publications, and claims should be disregarded as they do not emanate from the official structures of the Party," the statement read.

The NDC further warned that individuals or groups organizing protests, addressing press conferences, or making public statements on behalf of the party without authorization were acting independently and contrary to the party's official position.

The party specifically criticized what it described as "rented protesters working for jittery senatorial candidates of other parties," urging them to desist from interfering in the affairs of the NDC.

According to the statement, until the party leadership issues an official communication, any claims regarding candidates or election outcomes should be treated as personal opinions and deliberate attempts to misrepresent developments within the party.

The NDC disclosed that its national leadership, in collaboration with key stakeholders, is currently undertaking a harmonization process aimed at ensuring that candidates eventually presented by the party possess the competence, capacity, and broad acceptability needed to secure victory in future elections.

It therefore appealed to members and supporters to remain calm, patient, and committed to party unity while the process is beinginvestigated concluded.

"The authentic and duly approved list of candidates will be officially announced through the appropriate channels of the Party upon completion of the harmonization exercise," the statement added.

Reaffirming its commitment to transparency, fairness, and the collective interest of party members and the people of Ebonyi State, the NDC assured stakeholders that all decisions would be communicated through recognized party structures.

This latest clarification follows heightened political interest in the outcome of the Ebonyi Central Senatorial District primary election held on May 29 across the four local government areas of the district, a contest that reportedly featured former Secretary to the Ebonyi State Government Professor Bernard Odoh and businessman Architect Christian Asaga Nwali.

In a statement signed by Prince Igu Idika, State Publicity Secretary of the party and made available to Journalists in Abakaliki said that persons parading themselves as “ADC candidates” from a purported meeting of the party held in Abakaliki the State Capital did NOT participate in the ADC Primary Elections held in Ebonyi State on 21st and 22nd of May, 2026.

"Any statement, endorsement, or “announcement” made by Mrs. Jennifer Adibe Nwafor after that date, is personal and does not bind the African Democratic Congress, Ebonyi State.

Our attention has been drawn to a publication titled “2027 Polls: Ebonyi ADC backs Atiku, launches party unity drive” and claims of resolutions from an “all-stakeholders meeting” allegedly held at Vigo Event Centre, Abakaliki.

For public record, party members, and the media, we state clearly that the authentic ADC primaries for the 2027 general elections were conducted by the duly recognized party structure in line with the ADC Constitution and Guidelines.

"Anyone claiming candidacy without participating in those primaries is an impostor and has no mandate from the party.

"The meeting convened by one “Hon. Tobias Nnabike Oriji” is NOT an ADC meeting. It is an APC-aligned gathering masquerading as an opposition meeting. No notice, approval, or mandate was issued by the recognized ADC leadership in Ebonyi State for that meeting.

"Consequently, all resolutions, committees, endorsements, and “caretaker arrangements” announced there are invalid and have no effect within the ADC.

A concerned group under the platform of the Nigerian Democratic Congress, Ebonyi Integrity Group (EIG) have raised allegations of bribery and inducements meant to compromise a former Governor of Ebonyi State and a former Minister of the Federal Republic of Nigeria both, stakeholders of the main opposition NDC in Ebonyi with a view to compromise and alter the integrity of a yet-to-be-announced primary election held in Ebonyi Central Senate where a former Secretary to Ebonyi State Government, Professor Bernard Odoh and a Business mogul, Arch. Christian Asaga Nwali had locked horns last week.

In a statement issued on Monday in Abuja, the nation's capital, the State's Coordinator of the group, Chief Maxwell Onwe and the State's Publicity Secretary, Friday Ogboji Nweke called on the leaders of the Party to rescind any form of inducement that may compromise the eventual outcome of the primary elections in Ebonyi Central Senatorial zone.

It reads, "We have reliably gathered through rumours from the grape vine that a former Governor of the State who is a godfather, mentor, financier and a serving member of President Bola Tinubu's cabinet is allegedly at the centre of coordination of bribery and corruption of stakeholders and officials of the opposition NDC with a whooping $300, 000 dollars to do the bidding of his preferred aspirant and political godson.

We recall that this is coming after he failed to hijack the National Electoral Officers of the Party from Abuja that came to conduct the election whom the same forces had allegedly compromised with the Committee's Chairman abducted at the Party's Secretariat but later released due to mounting pressures from some of the Party's stakeholders.

We were sufficiently informed that the dubious plot was actually to take the abducted Chairman whose phone was switched off immediately he was whisked away from the Party's Secretariat on the behest of one of the aspirants to an unknown destination where the results of the election would be written and the billionaire business man returned elected even without going into the field for any contest.

However, because the national leadership of the Party prevailed on the State's Chairman of the Party and others to approach the DSS and make a formal entry about the incident, pressures then mounted from stakeholders which eventually compelled the release of the hitherto abducted Committee Chairman. It was only thereafter that aspirants proceeded to the field for the primaries in their various Local Government Areas", the statement further claimed.

It said, "Whereas, this group had remained calm and hopeful that the Party's leadership would do the right thing by declaring the eventual winners not only in Ebonyi Central but other contested positions within and outside the State, we are seriously disturbed by the allegations of late-hour bribery filtering in from the nation's capital, Abuja allegedly involving a powerful minister in Tinubu's cabinet.

As a group which monitored the peaceful and peaceable conduct of the exercise across Ebonyi Central and beyond, we beckon on the stakeholders, especially the former Governor of Ebonyi State and former Minister and indeed every stakeholder in the Ebonyi NDC project to please resist any attempt to collect any bribe from any quarters in order to compromise the long awaited final results of the election.

We make this warning against the backdrop of the personal integrity of our Party's Presidential candidate, Mr. Peter Obi, the national leader, Sen. Henry Seriake Dickson and indeed other leaders of the Party that have shown reputable character, integrity and honesty both in and out of public offices", it concluded.

Recall that the NDC in and statement by it's Director of Information had informed that the Party's leadership has convoked a National Executive Council, (NEC) meeting tomorrow in order to deliberate and release the outcome of the primaries held across the 36 States of the federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Abuja.

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and National Ex-Officio member of the party, Mazi Moses Idika, has dismissed calls for the party's 2027 governorship candidate in Ebonyi State, Chief Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, to step down on the grounds of zoning, insisting that the businessman and philanthropist remains firmly in the race.

Idika, who spoke in a statement was reacting to comments credited to Ebonyi State Commissioner for Commerce and Industry, Mr. Oguzor Kanu Offia Nwali, regarding the state's governorship succession ahead of the 2027 election.

The PDP chieftain argued that the governorship of Ebonyi State has historically been contested by candidates from different senatorial districts and that no constitutional provision prevents any qualified citizen from seeking the office.

According to him, elections conducted in the state since 1999 have featured candidates from across Ebonyi North, Central and South senatorial districts, regardless of political arrangements or zoning considerations.

He maintained that Chief Odii's ambition is legitimate and should be determined by the electorate through the ballot box rather than by what he described as an "imaginary zoning system."

Idika further challenged supporters of Governor Francis Nwifuru's re-election bid to highlight the administration's achievements rather than focus on succession politics.

He also accused the state government of failing to address critical developmental challenges facing the state, while expressing confidence that Odii would offer an alternative vision centred on investment, industrialisation and economic growth.

The PDP stalwart described Odii as a patriotic leader committed to improving the welfare of Ebonyi people and opening the state to greater economic opportunities.

"Chief Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii will contest, he will win, and Ebonyi people will be happy again," Idika stated.

He urged Ebonyi residents to decide the state's next governor through democratic means during the 2027 governorship election.

No fewer than 200 lawmakers and leaders of Niger Delta Host Communities (HOSTCOM) have called on the Federal Government to confer national honours on Chief Government Ekpemupolo, popularly known as Tompolo, and the leadership of Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited for their contributions to the protection of Nigeria's critical oil and gas infrastructure.

The call was contained in resolutions adopted at the end of a joint retreat of the House of Representatives Committees on Host Communities and Public Petitions held on Wednesday at Protea Hotel, Owerri.

The retreat, attended by lawmakers, trustees and leaders of HOSTCOM, commended Tantita Security Services for what participants described as its commitment and sacrifice in safeguarding strategic national assets across the Niger Delta.

According to the resolutions, the company’s operations have played a significant role in curbing oil theft, protecting petroleum infrastructure and boosting the nation’s crude oil production.

The participants urged the Federal Government to confer high national honours on the leadership of Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited in recognition of its contributions to national security and the protection of critical petroleum assets.

The retreat also called for an end to what it described as unwarranted media attacks and inflammatory comments directed at Tompolo and his team, warning that such actions could undermine the relative peace restored in the Niger Delta and jeopardise gains recorded in the fight against oil theft.

In a keynote address, Prof. S.C. Dike, a Professor of Energy and Comparative Environmental Law, highlighted achievements attributed to Tantita's surveillance operations.

Dike said Nigeria's crude oil production, which had fallen below 1.2 million barrels per day at its lowest level, had risen to more than 1.7 million barrels per day following intensified pipeline surveillance and anti-oil theft measures.

According to him, thousands of illegal pipeline connection points and crude oil bunkering routes have been uncovered and dismantled, while billions of naira in stolen revenues have been recovered for the Federal Government.

He added that the operations had also created legitimate employment opportunities for thousands of youths in the Niger Delta and contributed to the restoration of peace in several oil-producing communities.

Speaking at the retreat, Chairman of the House Committee on Host Communities, Hon. Dekor Dumnamene Robinson, described the recognition being sought for Tompolo and Tantita as overdue.

"Tompolo and his team have served this country at great personal risk. They have kept the economic lifeline of the nation running and restored peace to communities that had not experienced peace in decades," Robinson said.

The retreat unanimously passed a vote of confidence on Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited and urged the Federal Government and the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL) to grant the company a long-term contract extension.

The participants said the resolutions reached at the retreat would be transmitted to the Presidency, the National Honours Award Committee and other relevant government agencies for consideration.

Supporters of Architect Dr. Peter Agada of the Labour Party (LP) in Ebonyi State have declared their support for his presidential ambition ahead of the party's 2027 presidential primaries.

The supporters, who gathered in large numbers at a solidarity rally in the state, unanimously adopted Agada as their consensus candidate and pledged to mobilize support for his emergence as the party's flag bearer.

The group rejected what it described as the imposition of any other presidential aspirant, insisting that Agada remains the most suitable candidate to lead the party into the 2027 general election.

Speaking on behalf of the supporters, the leader of the group, Comrade Innocent Igiri, urged the national leadership of the Labour Party to ensure a transparent primary process that would produce Agada as the party's presidential candidate.

According to him, Agada possesses the leadership qualities, vision, and capacity required to unite party members and provide credible leadership for Nigeria.

The supporters reiterated their commitment to his aspiration, chanting slogans and displaying placards in support of his candidacy.

They maintained that the party should avoid fielding what they termed a "transactional candidate" and instead prioritize competence, credibility, and popular acceptance.

The rally ended with a renewed call on Labour Party stakeholders across the country to rally behind Agada's presidential bid ahead of the party's primaries.

.....Urges Probe Into Alleged Misconduct Within EFCC

A civil society organisation, the National Coalition for Protection of Nigeria’s Integrity (NCPNI), has commended the Chairman of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission, EFCC, Mr. Ola Olukoyede, over ongoing disciplinary reforms within the Commission, while calling for a deeper probe into allegations of bribery and case compromise involving suspended EFCC prosecutor, Mr. Samuel Chime.

The National Coordinator of the Coalition, Barr. Shehu Dauda, made the call while addressing journalists in Abuja on Saturday.

Dauda said the reported suspension of Chime over allegations of receiving financial inducements to compromise cases was a serious development that should not end as an internal disciplinary matter.

According to him, allegations that an EFCC prosecutor collected bribes, sabotaged cases, duplicated charges in different courts, and abused prosecutorial powers must be fully investigated because of their implications for justice, public trust, and the credibility of cases handled by such an officer.

“The allegations against Samuel Chime are too grave to be swept under the carpet. When a prosecutor in an anti-corruption agency is accused of taking financial inducements, compromising cases, and abusing prosecutorial powers, the credibility of every case handled by such an officer becomes a matter of public concern,” Dauda said.

He noted that several online publications had reported that Chime was suspended following petitions from civil society organisations, non-governmental organisations, and concerned individuals over alleged misconduct and financial inducement.

Dauda urged the EFCC leadership to review all cases handled or influenced by Chime, especially matters where complaints of intimidation, selective prosecution, harassment, or abuse of process had been raised.

He said such a review was necessary to protect innocent citizens, business owners, and defendants who may have suffered from compromised prosecutorial conduct.

Dauda cited the case of Dr. Rebecca Omokamo Godwin-Isaac as one of the matters that should be reviewed if it was handled or influenced by any officer now facing allegations of misconduct.

“The issue is bigger than Samuel Chime as an individual. It is about the integrity of the cases he handled and the people who may have suffered from abuse of power. If a prosecutor is accused of selling justice, then justice demands that his files must be reopened and reviewed,” he said.

The Coalition commended Olukoyede for what it described as bold internal cleansing steps, saying the EFCC Chairman had shown commitment to institutional discipline and accountability.

Dauda, however, stressed that if the allegations against Chime are established, dismissal or suspension would not be enough.

“If the allegations are established, there must be prosecution, case review, institutional correction, and justice for those who may have been affected by his alleged misconduct,” he said.

The Coalition also praised civil society organisations, whistleblowers, and concerned citizens whose petitions reportedly brought attention to the allegations against Chime.

It urged the EFCC to strengthen its internal monitoring system, protect complainants and whistleblowers, and reassure Nigerians that no officer would be allowed to use the name of the Commission to intimidate citizens, compromise cases, or trade justice for personal gain.

The Ebonyi State Wing of the Nigeria Union of Teachers has added its voice in condemning the recent federal government's policy waiving the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board examination as an entrance requirement for admission into Colleges of Education in Nigeria.

The teachers position was made known in a Press briefing led by the State NUT Chairman Francis Ekechi, Tuesday in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi state capital.

According to the Union, the policy if allowed, could further lower the already declining educational standards in the country, demoralise teaching and take a negative toll on professional standards.

Ekechi argued that while teaching is the mother of all professions, implementing such a policy would immediately erode the required intellectual checks, thereby making the teaching profession an all-comers affair. "Lowering entry requirements into Colleges of Education sends a dangerous message that anyone can become a teacher without merit. This will further erode public confidence in our education system" he said.

Ekechi further argued that allowing the JAMB Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination entry requirements for universities and polytechnics while removing it for Colleges of Education suggests discrimination and government's view of teachers training as inferior. He warned that such discriminatory policy “will discourage brilliant students from choosing Colleges of Education.

"NUT Ebonyi warns that waiving JAMB would flood classrooms with poorly prepared candidates, ultimately harming pupils in primary and secondary schools. We cannot build a 21st-century economy with 19th-century teachers. Quality must start from recruitment.”

The Union urged that rather than advance such a retrogressive policy, the government should focus more on ways of addressing the poor renumeration and welfare of teachers; irregular salaries, low societal regard for teachers as well as provide bursaries, upgrade infrastructure and equipment in Colleges of Education, stressing that such actions would encourage students enrollment into the teaching profession, not standards lowering.

While calling for immediate reversal of the policy, the Union urged the government to initiate consultation with the NUT, the Colleges of Education Academic Staff Union (COEASU) and other education stakeholders for policy review to reposition Colleges of Education. It also called for introduction of incentives such as automatic employment, special allowances, and scholarships to attract quality candidates into Colleges of Education.

"We will mobilize our members and engage in lawful advocacy to resist this policy until it is reversed.

“Any nation that toys with its teacher quality toys with its future", Ekechi warned.

A diaspora group , Association of Ebonyi Indigenes Socio-cultural in the Diaspora, (AEISCD) has congratulated a Presidential aspirant under the platform of the African Democratic Congress, (ADC) following his emergence at the Presidential primaries in the State yesterday.


The primary election was conducted across the 171 political wards in the 13 local government areas of Ebonyi State, with party members participating in the exercise to choose their preferred presidential candidate.

Declaring the result at the collation centre at Preston Hotel, the Chairman of the Ebonyi State Presidential Primary Election Committee and ADC National Vice Chairman (Diaspora), Fred Onwe, announced that Atiku secured 15,300 votes to emerge winner of the statewide poll.

According to the official results, Amaechi garnered 2,200 votes, while Hayatuddeen polled 200 votes.

Onwe had also disclosed that the party registered a total of 18,891 voters for the exercise across the state, while 17,700 members were accredited to participate in the election.

“Consequent upon the outcome of the election, Alhaji Atiku Abubakar, having scored the highest number of votes cast, is hereby declared winner of the ADC presidential primary election in Ebonyi State,” he declared.

In a congratulatory message signed by the President of AEISCD (Worldwide), Ambassador Paschal Oluchukwu, the group described the victory of the former Vice President as well deserved, noting that his wealth of experience will help in fixing Nigeria at this critical time in its history.

"This group is pleased with the overwhelming victory of the former President. We are very confident that his victory is a good step towards redeeming Nigeria's ailing democracy. The former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar on Monday emerged winner of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) presidential primary election in Ebonyi State.

Atiku Abubakar polled a total of 15,300 votes to defeat his rivals, Amaechi and Hayatudeen in the exercise conducted across the state.

The result was declared at Preston Hotel, which served as the state collation centre for the primary election.

According to the official results released by the Ebonyi State Presidential Primary Election Committee, Atiku defeated former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi, who secored 2,200 votes, while Muhammad Hayatudeen polled 200 votes.

The committee disclosed that Ebonyi State had a total of 18,891 registered voters for the exercise conducted across the 171 wards in the 13 local government areas of the state. Out of the figure, 17,700 voters were accredited for the primary.

The Chairman of the committee and ADC National Vice Chairman (Diaspora), Fred Onwe, while declaring the result, said Atiku scored the highest number of votes and was therefore returned as the winner of the presidential primary in the state.

Mrs Marian Emmanuel, the Head of Feed the Multitude, a Non- Governmental Organisation (NGO) has organised a medical outreach in Abakaliki to address the health challenges of the citizens, especially the needy.

The medical outreach organised at the Pa Ngele Oruta Stadium Abakiliki in collaboration with the the Angelo Biotech International said that many people are passing through health challenges but may not have funds for treatment.

"This made me embark on this divine project.

"All these inspired me to request from Angelo Biotech International and they honoured me by approving medicines for the people.

"The medicine they donated can cure cancer, ovarial issues, rheumatism, attraitis, stroke among others,"

She noted that items such as Angelo tooth paste, sanitary pad all kinds of body infection, shampoo, babies care for restoring health; were distributed

"There is need for people to embark on test before receiving any treatment which enhances accuracy in treatment.

"We work with medical doctors and medical laboratory scientists to help in efficient treatment of patients,"

Chief Alex Jia, President of Angelo Biotech International said that the organisation operates in Nigeria and other African countries.

"We concentrate on drug supplements, registered by NAFDAC as we advise those yet to give the medicines a trial to do so,".

The vision bearer used the occasion to do public presentation of her three books titled: Change your mindset and become better in life, The Changed Mindset and Live healthy life rightly with the visionary.

High point of the occasion was the sharing of N6 million medicine and food to thousands of people at Pa Ngele Oruta Township stadium Abakiliki.

The Ebonyi State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has raised concerns over an alleged threat by the state government to revoke the land housing the party’s state secretariat, describing the development as an attack on democratic principles and opposition politics in the state.

In a press release signed by the party's Publicity Secretary and spokesperson, Prince (Hon.) Darlington Peter Onwe, the opposition party reacted to reports allegedly credited to Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, concerning plans to take action against the PDP secretariat property.

According to the statement, the PDP said it was shocked by a publication reportedly carried by Famous News Nigeria, which alleged that the governor made comments during a stakeholders' meeting concerning the circumstances surrounding the acquisition and documentation of the land occupied by the party’s state secretariat.

The party argued that if such statements were indeed made, they raise concerns over what it described as an unhealthy direction in governance and democratic engagement within the state.

The statement further alleged that at a period when citizens expect government attention on critical sectors such as infrastructure, economic development, employment creation, healthcare and education, the administration appeared to be focusing on political conflicts and opposition-related issues.

The PDP also questioned the legality of any proposed action concerning the property, citing provisions of the Land Use Act. According to the party, Section 28 of the Act only permits revocation of land rights under conditions of overriding public interest and requires due legal process before such action can be implemented.

The opposition party maintained that the law does not support arbitrary or politically motivated revocation of property rights and stressed that courts have repeatedly invalidated actions considered to be exercised in bad faith or outside statutory powers.

The party further warned against what it described as the use of state institutions to suppress opposition voices, emphasizing that the PDP secretariat represents more than a physical structure but also embodies democratic participation and constitutional rights including freedom of association and political expression.

The statement also expressed concern over what it described as worsening economic conditions, unemployment and governance challenges in the state, while claiming that recent developments within the administration, including suspensions of some government officials over project-related issues, have intensified public concerns regarding governance priorities.

"The people of Ebonyi deserve a government focused on development rather than political confrontations," the statement said.

The PDP subsequently warned that any attempt to interfere with the party's state secretariat property would be challenged through constitutional and legal means.

The party also called on its national leadership, civil society organisations, the Nigerian Bar Association, democratic institutions and development partners to pay attention to what it described as signs of intolerance and executive overreach in the state.

As of the time of filing this report, there was no official response from the Ebonyi State Government regarding the allegations contained in the PDP statement.

A fresh controversy has emerged over the traditional leadership of Anioma Autonomous Community in Isuokoma, Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, as a kingship claimant, Chief Wisdom Chukwuma Okoye, popularly known as High Chief Oza Mamifei Chukwu, has approached the court seeking to invalidate the recognition of a traditional ruler in the community.

Speaking to newsmen after Court proceedings today in Abakaliki, Chief Okoye alleged that irregularities and violations of established succession procedures characterized the process that led to the emergence of the current occupant of the throne.

Okoye who traced the dispute to a longstanding kingship tussle in the community, alleged that previous controversies had once left Anioma without a traditional ruler for about 19 years.

According to him, the prolonged dispute has deprived the community of developmental opportunities and government benefits tied to the institution of traditional leadership.

He maintained that the kingship arrangement in Anioma follows a rotational system among designated villages and compounds and argued that it was the turn of his lineage to produce the monarch.

"The kingship of Anioma rotates from village to village, and this time it is our turn. Instead of allowing due process to take its course, some people allegedly manipulated the process and conducted what I call a kangaroo election," Okoye said.

He alleged that the local government chairman at the time had notified security agencies and government authorities that no election would hold because of the prevailing situation in the community.

Okoye stated that despite this development, some individuals proceeded with what he described as an unauthorized process and later crowned another person as king.

He said that rather than resort to actions capable of disrupting peace in the community, he chose the legal route.

"I decided not to take the law into my hands because I believe the court remains the last hope of the common man," he added.

Okoye further alleged that government authorities were misled into recognizing the disputed traditional ruler and issuing him a staff of office.

According to him, the state government was allegedly informed that there was no dispute pending over the kingship matter.

"They deceived the government into believing there was no case and that everything had been settled amicably," he alleged.

Also speaking, lead counsel to the claimant, Barrister Cee Cee Ani, argued that no valid Ezeship election was conducted in the community.

Ani said the local government authorities had earlier cancelled the proposed election because of security concerns in the area.

The lawyer cited several security incidents, including the alleged abduction of a traditional leader and killings within the community, as factors behind the decision.

According to him, only two individuals, including Chief Wisdom Okoye, were duly screened and cleared to participate in the proposed election before its cancellation.

"Our position is simple: there was no election in Anioma Isu. If there was no election, then any subsequent recognition arising from that process cannot stand," Ani stated.

The counsel further claimed that the individual currently recognized as traditional ruler had previously been disqualified from the process, adding that his client's legal team is seeking a court order directing the conduct of a fresh election.

"Our prayer before the court is for a lawful election to be conducted and for the process to follow due procedure," he said.

The matter is currently before the State High Court, with parties awaiting judicial determination on the disputed kingship and recognition process.

Efforts to obtain responses from the other parties mentioned in the allegations were not immediately available as of the time of filing this report.

However, the case has been placed on accelerated hearing and further adjourned to 18 and 29th June as well as 13th July, 2026 for the claimant to put his witnesses to prove his case

The Ebonyi State Coordinator of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) Mrs Malgwi Maidariya, has said that the the scheme has met its set goals and lived up to purpose of its establishment.

Maidariya made the disclosure during the commemoration of the NYSC 53rd anniversary in the state,, noting that it has remained a powerful tool for nation building since being established in 1973.

Maidariya represented by the Assistant Director, Human Resource Management, Mr Ogunkunle Azeez, said the scheme has fostered unity across ethnic, religious and cultural boundaries.

"The vision of the scheme's founding fathers have been realised with the promotion of national integration, community development and educational advancement.

"Effective health delivery, electoral support services, rural transformation among other strides, are some of the significant achievements of the scheme.

"The scheme has also produced professionals, entrepreneurs, technocrats and patriotic citizens who have contributed in shaping the future of the country," .

The coordinator said that the scheme in Ebonyi has championed national development through strategic collaboration and alignment with the policies and developmental aspirations of Ebonyi government.

"This event is a remarkable milestone worthy of celebration."

Miss Aniebiet George, a Youth Corper serving with the Ebonyi Ministry of Finance said she is fulfilled to be part of the NYSC innovation.

George called on the scheme's management to ensure the posting of corps members to their areas of specialisation.

"This will help the them acquire basic knowledge and experience to excel in life."

Emmanuel Obaegbulam, Another Corps Member said that corps members have benefited much from the scheme especially in the area of health.

"Government at all levels should tackle the security challenges confronting the nation to check the risks faced by corps members while serving the nation.

"The government should also increase the allowance of corps members to enable them survive in their areas of service," he said.

The Vice Chancellor of Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Professor Michael Ugota Awoke, has commended the Governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, for his contributions and reforms in the education sector, attributing many of the institution's recent achievements to the support of the state government.

Professor Awoke made the remarks during an award presentation ceremony organized by presidents of student unions across institutions in the South-East and South-South regions, where he was honored for his leadership and achievements as Vice Chancellor.

Speaking at the event, the EBSU vice chancellor said the progress recorded under his administration was largely driven by the support and encouragement received from Governor Nwifuru, the university governing council, and other stakeholders.

"He encourages me and continues to support the growth of the university. We cannot take for granted the role he has played in ensuring that Ebonyi State University continues to make remarkable progress," Awoke said about Gov Nwifuru.

Awoke further and acknowledged the contributions of the university's governing council and the Pro-Chancellor, Most Rev. Dr. Abraham Nwali, noting that their guidance and support have been instrumental in restoring peace, unity, and stability within the institution.

He stressed that his administration's achievements should not be viewed as individual efforts, adding that collective support and commitment had contributed significantly to the successes recorded in the university.

The Deputy Vice Chancellor (Administration) and Dean of Student Affairs, Professor Michael Ajanwachukwu, commended the gathering of student leaders from the South-East and South-South regions, describing it as a demonstration of unity and strength among future leaders.

He recalled working closely with the Vice Chancellor in the past, noting that their relationship dated back several years, saying,"back in 2016, under the administration of the former governor, I served in the same committee with our father here. That was the main production committee, and even then, his commitment and leadership qualities were evident."

Similarly, the president of the Student Union Government of Federal Polytechnic Nekede, Imo State, Comrade Moses Desmond, explained that the recognition followed extensive consultations among student leaders from the two regions.

He said the decision was driven by the vice chancellor's reputation for prioritizing student welfare and creating a conducive environment for academic activities.

"We do not just give awards for the sake of it. We took time to evaluate and verify the impact he has made. The hospitality and reception we received here further confirmed what we had heard about him," he stated.

Fresh political controversy has erupted in Ebonyi State following allegations that the administration of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru may be considering revocation of the land housing the state secretariat of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), a development opposition figures and political observers say further reflects an emerging pattern of executive intolerance and misplaced governance priorities under the present administration.

The controversy followed a publication by Famous News Nigeria alleging that Governor Nwifuru, during a stakeholders’ gathering, made comments suggesting that his government could move against the PDP secretariat property while also referencing issues surrounding the acquisition and documentation of the land.

Reacting through a press statement signed by the Ebonyi PDP Publicity Secretary and Spokesperson, Darlington Peter Onwe, the opposition party accused the state government of allegedly drifting toward political intimidation, vendetta and suppression of opposition voices at a time when citizens are battling severe economic hardship and deteriorating living conditions.

The administration has equally faced criticism over infrastructural conditions in parts of the education sector after reports and viral videos exposed pupils learning under deplorable classroom conditions, triggering public outrage across the state.

Many residents and civil society voices have continued to question why, despite repeated ceremonial commissioning of projects and expansive government publicity campaigns, several public infrastructure projects across the state allegedly remain incomplete, underutilized or disconnected from the immediate socioeconomic needs of ordinary citizens.

Leaders and chairmen of the Labour Party across the Southeast geopolitical zone have adopted Architect Dr. Peter Agada as their preferred presidential candidate ahead of the party's presidential primaries, while also rejecting the candidacy of Samuel Nwigwe Chibuzor, citing constitutional concerns over his qualification.

The decision was reached during a conference held at Ardova Hotel in Enugu State on Tuesday, May 20, 2026, where party leaders and stakeholders from the Southeast gathered to deliberate on the future direction of the party and preparations for the presidential race.

According to information made available after the meeting, Dr. Agada addressed the gathering virtually, presenting his plans and manifesto to the regional leadership and stakeholders.

Following his presentation, the leaders reportedly endorsed him as their consensus choice for the party's presidential primaries and urged members across the region to align party structures towards supporting his aspiration.

The Southeast Labour Party leaders stated that the endorsement reflected their confidence in Dr. Agada's leadership vision and capacity to represent the party at the national level.

Representatives at the meeting included Enugu State Chairman, Chief Kingsley Ugwu; Anambra State Chairman, Chief Peter Okoye; Imo State Chairman, Chief Charles Ugochukwu; Abia State representative, Hon. Sir Chief Emmanuel Nwaeze Otti; and Ebonyi State representative, Comrade Igiri Innocent.

The leaders further emphasized the need for unity and collective efforts among party members to strengthen the Labour Party's chances in the forthcoming presidential contest.

Chief Sunday Opoke has emerged as the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate for Ebonyi North Senatorial District ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Opoke, the sole aspirant in the primary election, is a former General Manager of the Ebonyi Rural Water Supply and Sanitation Agency and a former governorship candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in the state.

Our Correspondent reports that the Ebonyi North Senatorial District comprises of Izzi, Ebonyi, Abakaliki and Ohaukwu Local Government Areas (LGAs).

The primary election, held on Wednesday in Abakaliki, recorded a large turnout of PDP members who endorsed the emergence of the candidate for the 2027 general elections.

Speaking after the primary election in Abakaliki, Mr Solomon Onwe, Chairman of the party’s Primary Election Panel, commended the emergence of the candidate for the zone.

“I present to you our sole aspirant for the Ebonyi North Senatorial District, Sunday Opoke, and urge you to give him the needed support to ensure that the PDP wins in the zone during the general elections,” Onwe said.

In his remarks, Opoke appreciated party members for their support and noted that the PDP was poised to reclaim power in 2027.

He decried the harsh economic situation in the country, which he attributed to poor governance, and pledged to bring government closer to the people.

“If elected, I will attract investors to our zone to develop our natural resources, including lead, zinc and limestone, among others.

“Our zone is blessed with abundant natural resources. We need a new Nigeria and a new Ebonyi, and the time has come.

“When I become your senator, I will support women and youth development. There will be a paradigm shift in governance,” he said.

Also speaking, Mr Chidiebere Egwu, Deputy National Publicity Secretary of the party, said the PDP had bounced back and was ready to move Ebonyi State and Nigeria forward.

....Says as He Highlights Major Infrastructure Projects

The Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has declared that the Southeast region would continue to support the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, insisting that the President has significantly addressed many of the developmental concerns long raised by the people of the region.

Umahi stated that the decision to support the President was based on strategic considerations and visible developmental efforts rather than sentiment, emphasizing that governance and elections require careful planning and tangible results.

According to him, the Southeast people should appreciate the efforts of the Tinubu administration, particularly in the area of infrastructure development, which he described as critical to commerce, education and the general wellbeing of the people.

"We in the Southeast will support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu. This presidency is not built on sentiments but on strategic planning. The President has substantially addressed many of the issues that concern our people," he said.

The minister challenged critics within the region to engage in constructive debate, maintaining that the administration had made remarkable progress despite not solving every issue completely.

Umahi particularly highlighted several ongoing projects in Ebonyi State and other parts of the Southeast under the Federal Government's infrastructure development drive.

He disclosed that one of the President's major legacy projects, which is expected to connect the Calabar end of the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway to Ndibe Beach and extend through Ebonyi, Benue, Kogi, Nasarawa and Abuja, is progressing steadily.

According to him, the route from Calabar to the Ebonyi-Benue boundary covers approximately 123 kilometres and was originally designed as a single carriageway with a width of 12 metres.

However, he explained that the Federal Government later decided to upgrade sections of the project into a dual carriageway to improve capacity and long-term utility.

Umahi said the project would feature reinforced concrete pavement and solar-powered street lighting, with an estimated cost of about N454 billion. He added that the Federal Government had already released 50 percent of the project funding.

He further explained that work is progressing simultaneously across multiple sections of the route, noting that contractors are deploying heavy equipment and modern construction technology.

"We have seen contractors working in more than ten different sections with equipment never before experienced in Ebonyi State," he said.

The minister also revealed that the second phase of the road project has commenced, stretching about 178 kilometres from the Ebonyi-Benue boundary through Benue, Kogi and Nasarawa States.

He stated that while the current contract is for a single carriageway valued at approximately N685 billion, plans are underway for procurement of a second carriageway to align with other legacy projects of the administration.

Umahi also expressed satisfaction with ongoing flyover projects in Ebonyi State, including works at Onueke and other strategic locations.
He praised contractors handling the projects, noting the quality and pace of work being delivered.

Speaking on the Onueke flyover project, Umahi said foundation works had already reached about 60 percent completion and expressed optimism that the project could be delivered before the end of the year.

He also mentioned ongoing dualisation works around the airport bridge and timber market axis, describing the projects as part of broader efforts aimed at improving transportation infrastructure and boosting economic activities within the state.

The minister maintained that the Federal Government remains committed to completing the projects and expanding infrastructure development across the region.

For years, many patients across southeastern Nigeria faced a familiar dilemma after receiving recommendations for advanced diagnostic scans: travel long distances, endure long waiting periods, or abandon treatment altogether because of cost and limited access.

That reality may now be changing at Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital following the installation of a modern 1.5 Tesla Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI) system donated by NNPC Foundation Limited.

But beyond the unveiling ceremony and ribbon-cutting optics, hospital authorities say the significance of the new MRI machine lies in what it represents: faster diagnoses, improved survival chances and a major leap in specialist healthcare delivery for millions of Nigerians in the region.

Speaking during the commissioning and handover ceremony on Friday, Chief Medical Director of NAUTH, Prof. Joseph Ugbaja, described the facility as more than just another piece of medical equipment.

“This is not merely the commissioning of a machine,” Ugbaja said. “It is the installation of hope, precision and excellence in healthcare delivery.”

According to him, the MRI system marks a “quantum leap” in the hospital’s diagnostic capabilities, particularly in the management of neurological, musculoskeletal and oncological conditions where accurate imaging often determines the difference between early intervention and medical complications.

MRI technology remains globally recognized as one of the most effective tools for detailed imaging of soft tissues, spinal structures, internal organs and brain-related conditions. Yet in Nigeria, access to such diagnostic services remains heavily concentrated in a few urban centres, leaving patients in many regions underserved.

“For too long, patients in our catchment area have had to travel long distances to access this level of diagnostic precision, often at prohibitive costs,” Ugbaja stated.

“With this installation, we eliminate that burden. We bring world-class diagnostics closer to our people.”

The intervention is expected to significantly reduce medical referrals outside Anambra State while improving turnaround time for critical diagnoses. Patients from Anambra State, Enugu State, Imo State, Abia State, Ebonyi State and Delta State are expected to benefit from the facility.

Healthcare analysts have repeatedly identified diagnostic infrastructure as one of the weakest links in Nigeria’s medical system. Delayed diagnoses, especially in cancer, stroke and neurological disorders, continue to contribute to poor health outcomes nationwide.

For many patients, the challenge is not merely treatment, but getting accurate diagnoses on time.

Managing Director of NNPC Foundation Ltd/Gte, Mrs. Emmanuella Arukwe, acknowledged these realities, saying the intervention was designed specifically to address critical gaps in healthcare accessibility.

“For many families, obtaining critical diagnostic scans such as MRI often requires travelling long distances, enduring extended waiting periods and, in some cases, delaying urgently needed medical care because of cost or limited availability,” she said.

According to Arukwe, the donation reflects the foundation’s broader social investment strategy in public healthcare delivery.

“This intervention represents far more than the installation of medical equipment,” she noted. “It is a practical investment in healthcare access, diagnostic accuracy and improved patient outcomes.”

The project also aligns with ongoing efforts to strengthen tertiary healthcare institutions under the Federal Government’s healthcare reform agenda. Ugbaja linked the MRI installation to NAUTH’s 10-year strategic development framework as well as President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and the policy direction of the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare.

Yet even amid the celebrations, the NAUTH management emphasized that sophisticated equipment alone cannot transform healthcare outcomes without qualified personnel and institutional discipline.

In a pointed message to hospital staff, the CMD charged radiologists, consultants, radiographers, nurses and technicians to uphold international standards in operating the facility.

“Let every image produced here be a testament to excellence,” he said. “Let every diagnosis be swift and accurate. Let every patient who lies within that bore feel the confidence that they are receiving care comparable to anywhere in the world.”

He stressed that NAUTH had already begun parallel investments in staff training and human resource development to ensure the MRI unit functions at globally acceptable standards.

“We recognize that equipment alone does not make a great hospital,” Ugbaja added. “It is the human beings behind the equipment — their expertise, compassion and dedication.”

That statement perhaps captures the deeper significance of the new MRI system.

The 2023 governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State and frontline contender for the 2027 election, Chief Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, popularly known as Anyichuks, has explained that his decision to rejoin the governorship race was driven by the worsening economic hardship and rising poverty across the state.

Chief Odii made the declaration shortly after submitting his nomination forms and undergoing screening before the PDP screening panel at the party’s Legacy House headquarters in Abuja.

According to him, Ebonyi State is in urgent need of purposeful and people-oriented leadership capable of addressing the growing economic and social challenges confronting the people.

He lamented that despite the huge federal allocations accruing to the state since the 2023 general elections, the living conditions of the people had continued to deteriorate, stressing that poverty and insecurity had increased rather than reduced.

“At this critical time, Ebonyi State requires leadership with the capacity to drive economic growth and human capital development,” he said.

The PDP stalwart maintained that his renewed ambition was borne out of the desire to “get it right this time,” insisting that the people of Ebonyi deserve better governance and improved welfare.

Speaking on democracy and governance, Chief Odii emphasized the importance of a vibrant opposition in sustaining democratic values, noting that any society that discourages opposition risks sliding into dictatorship.

“Any opposition with constructive ideas is welcome. Any government or society that says there should be no opposition is a dictatorship, and we will not allow dictatorship in Ebonyi State,” he stated.

The business mogul also dismissed sentiments surrounding zoning and clan politics, insisting that leadership should not be determined by sectional interests.

“I am from Ebonyi State before being from Izzi or Onicha Local Government Area. Ebonyi State cannot continue to be governed on the basis of clannish politics,” he declared.

Chief Odii further noted that through his foundation, he has touched lives across all parts of the state without discrimination, adding that poverty does not recognize clan boundaries.

He expressed confidence in securing the PDP governorship ticket and assured party supporters that the mistakes of the past would not repeat themselves.

“Our mandate will not be stolen again in 2027,” he declared confidently, expressing optimism about victory both at the PDP primary and the governorship election.
