A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State, Barrister Onu, has commended the party’s leadership for the successful conduct of its National Convention held in Abuja.

The convention, which took place on Sunday, March 29, 2026, at the Moshood Abiola National Stadium, was widely described as peaceful, well-organised, and impactful, drawing delegates and stakeholders from across the federation.

Speaking to journalists shortly after the event, Onu expressed satisfaction with the outcome, describing the gathering as historic and unifying.

He said the convention has reaffirmed the PDP’s position as a strong and resilient political force in Nigeria.

He praised the party’s leadership, including Nyesom Wike, National Chairman Abdulraham Mohammed, Chairman of the Board of Trustees, Mao Ohuabunwa, and members of the National Working Committee, for ensuring a hitch-free and transparent process.

According to him, the smooth conduct of the convention has restored confidence among party faithful and demonstrated the PDP’s readiness to provide credible leadership to Nigerians.

The PDP stalwart also lauded Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, describing him as a key figure in strengthening the party in Ebonyi State and the South-East region.

He noted that Odii’s leadership style, marked by inclusiveness and grassroots mobilisation, has contributed significantly to the party’s resurgence.

Onu further stated that the renewed unity within the party in Ebonyi is already yielding positive results, with increased participation of youths and women in party activities.

He called on party members and supporters in Ebonyi State to remain steadfast and committed, urging them to close ranks and work collectively for the success of the party in future elections.

He emphasised that sustained loyalty and cooperation among stakeholders would be crucial in consolidating the gains recorded at the national level.

Addressing his constituents in Onicha Local Government Area, Onu expressed optimism about the party’s prospects, assuring them that the PDP is repositioned to deliver effective representation and good governance.

He added that the outcome of the convention would further strengthen internal democracy within the party and enhance its chances in upcoming electoral contests.

Onu also urged Nigerians to continue to support the PDP, noting that the party remains committed to policies and programmes that promote national unity, economic growth, and social development.

He reiterated that the successful convention has further strengthened the party’s resolve, unity, and preparedness ahead of future political engagements.

A non governmental organization, NGO, on the aegis of 'Ike-Elechi Ogba foundation' has said it's partnering with prominent stakeholders and government of Ebonyi State to resuscitate Igbo culture and tradition that is, almost going into extinction.

The deputy vice chancellor, Academics of Ebonyi State University, Prof.Ike-Elechi Ogba, the leader of the organization, said the cultural carnival and Art exhibition were convoked to showcase African culture and Nigerian culture, in particular Ebonyi State culture.

The foundation, equally launched a book title 'Echoes of a Regal Throne", and held at the faculty of social sciences and humanities hall, Ebonyi State University permanent site, Abakaliki.

The Nations News reports that the cultural heritage event and other Art exhibition/ book launch was attended by prominent stakeholders; the governor of Ebonyi State Francis Nwifuru, the former governor of Ebonyi State and minister of education, Dr. Sam Egwu and the vice chancellor of the state University and host of others.

In their separate reactions, governor Francis Nwifuru, who was represented by the secretary to Ebonyi State government, SSG, Prof. Grace Umezuruike said: "The government is doing a whole lot to sustain the culture of igbo land, both language, especially, that of Ebonyi State.

Speaking on the attacks and killings of traditional rulers in the country, Nwifuru said: "we understand the importance of protecting the lives and properties of the citizens, particularly our traditional rulers.

"The lives of the traditional rulers should not be played with.So it's very important they are protected" he stressed.

On his part, the former governor of Ebonyi State and minister of education, Sam Egwu stated "it is regrettable and unfortunate that the custodian of our culture, traditional rulers,are murdered ruthlessly.

Egwu, represented by the former commissioner of information and orientation, Dr John Otu, however advocated that "if security is provided for political office holders like chairman of council and others, why should we not provide formidable security for the traditional rulers in Nigeria?

"I'm of the opinion that the national and state assemblies should be encouraged to enact a law, that the traditional rulers, especially the recognized ones, be provided with security" he insisted.

Also, the Vice Chancellor of Ebonyi State University, Prof Micheal Awoke, represented by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor, Administration, Prof. Michael Aja Nwachukwu applauded the foundation for promoting igbo culture and tradition.

Earlier in a remark, the deputy vice chancellor Academics, Prof. Ike-Elechi Ogba said:"we are showcasing African culture,Nigerian culture, but most importantly, Ebonyi people's culture. And that is to tell the world that Ebonyi has a history that predates modern times.

"We have the ways we do our things, the way we lead our life, and we have people who ruled us and guided us.Not just our ancestors, but people who were physically here,did marvelous and great things, and then transcended into becoming ancestors.

"The problem we have in the society today is that,we are almost in lack of real kings.Because in those days, elders and kings stand for equity, justice, and fairness. God will always protect you.

"Another problem we have is that we allowed our society to deny us the value we have as a people and a culture, and then buy Western ideas, or negative Western influences" he stated,

The foundation, however empowered artists during the art exhibition with over 1.5 million, stressing that the event was part of the Ogbaekirigwe Legacy Project, focused on celebrating and preserving cultural heritage, especially in Southeast region.

Uchechukwu Agbo called for a formidable partnership between non governmental organizations and government at levels to ensure that the cultural heritage of Ebonyi, Nigeria and Africa at large, do not go into extinction.

... Reaffirms Infrastructure Drive


The Federal Government of Nigeria has reaffirmed its commitment to nationwide connectivity through improved road and bridge infrastructure, announcing plans to open a 15-kilometre stretch of the Enugu–Onitsha highway for use before Easter.


Minister of Works, David Umahi, disclosed this to journalists during an inspection tour of ongoing federal road projects in Enugu State, expressing satisfaction with the pace and quality of work done so far.


Umahi said the section of the road, which has reached an advanced stage of completion, would be opened on or before March 31, even if finishing touches such as road markings and median curbs are yet to be concluded.

According to him, the directive is part of the Federal Government’s commitment to providing immediate relief to road users while ensuring long-term infrastructure durability.


He noted that the Enugu–Onitsha and Enugu–Port Harcourt corridors are among the most strategic routes in the Southeast, historically plagued by traffic congestion, tanker accidents, and deteriorating pavement conditions.


Umahi expressed optimism that ongoing reconstruction efforts would permanently reverse the trend. “The complaints about bad roads are becoming a thing of the past,” Umahi stated, attributing the progress to the infrastructure drive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The Minister revealed that the Enugu–Port Harcourt dual carriageway, spanning approximately 214 kilometres, is being redesigned to incorporate concrete pavement on at least 50 per cent of its length, a departure from the traditional asphalt approach. He explained that the shift is intended to enhance road longevity and reduce maintenance costs.

Umahi acknowledged that inherited liabilities estimated at over N13 trillion across more than 2,000 projects as of May 2023 have posed significant challenges. Despite this, he said the President has directed that payments be prioritised for ongoing projects, including those in the Southeast.

He admitted that delayed payments have affected contractors’ pace of work but expressed confidence that progress would accelerate once funds are disbursed. “You cannot expect optimal performance when contractors are unpaid, but we appreciate their continued trust in government,” he said.



Highlighting intergovernmental collaboration, Umahi commended Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, for supporting federal projects, particularly the Abakpa flyover project.



He disclosed that the state government contributed to compensation payments and facilitated the relocation of critical utilities, including high-tension power lines and water pipelines.



Project contractor representative, Engineer Chimalo Ezeugo, said piling works are ongoing, with 15 out of the required 40 piles already completed and additional ones in progress. The project is expected to span approximately 800 metres, with a delivery timeline of one year.



Ezeugo explained that the flyover would connect key routes within the Enugu-Abakpa axis and significantly improve traffic flow, particularly in high-density areas such as Trans-Ekulu and the Government Reserved Area (GRA).



Also speaking, Resident Engineer on the Enugu–Onitsha project, Engineer Lawrence Ubi, confirmed that the 15-kilometre section is about 95 per cent complete and structurally sound. He assured that the road meets required engineering standards and is ready for use.

The Ebonyi State chapter of the Obidient Movement has commended the national leadership of the Labour Party under Nenadi Usman and Darlington Nwokocha for zoning the party’s 2027 presidential ticket to the South.

The group described the decision as a bold step toward equity, fairness, and national cohesion, while urging Peter Obi to take advantage of what it called a “narrow but strategic window” to return to the party and secure its presidential ticket.

In a statement issued by its coordinator, Mr. Igiri, the movement cautioned Obi against waiting for alternative platforms, noting that such options may not offer the same clarity of purpose.

It specifically referenced the African Democratic Congress, stating that the party had yet to demonstrate commitment to zoning its presidential ticket to the South.

“The Labour Party has once again shown leadership and sensitivity to the national mood. We urge Mr. Peter Obi to seize this opportunity and return home,” the statement said.

The group also congratulated the party on its recent court victory in Bayelsa State, describing the development as a reaffirmation of its legitimacy and internal stability.

According to the movement, the victory underscores the resilience of the party’s leadership and its readiness to provide Nigerians with a credible alternative in the 2027 general elections.

Igiri further praised what he termed the “victorious comeback” of the party, which he said had previously faced internal challenges, including an alleged attempted hijack by elements linked to the ruling All Progressives Congress through the faction led by Julius Abure.

He said the party’s resurgence signals renewed hope for millions of Nigerians seeking a viable political platform ahead of the next electoral cycle.

The Ebonyi State Chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has formally notified its members, leaders, and delegates of the party’s forthcoming national convention scheduled to take place in Abuja.

In a statement issued by the State Publicity Secretary, Darlington Peter Onwe, the party described the convention as a crucial gathering aimed at strengthening internal democracy and repositioning the PDP for national leadership.

The convention, approved by the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC), is slated for March 29 and 30, 2026, and will focus on the election of members of the National Working Committee (NWC) and other key organs.

The party urged all statutory delegates and stakeholders from Ebonyi State to actively participate and adhere to laid-down guidelines to ensure a successful exercise.

According to the statement, delegates are expected to complete their registration on the party’s e-registration portal and attend the convention with necessary identification, including their voter cards.

The PDP further emphasized the need for unity, discipline, and democratic conduct throughout the convention process, noting that the exercise represents a defining moment in the party’s rebuilding efforts.

The statement also assured members of proper coordination and communication regarding logistics for participation.

Party stakeholders say the convention is expected to play a pivotal role in shaping the PDP’s future direction ahead of upcoming political contests.

The South East Zone of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has successfully conducted its zonal congress, electing new executives to steer the affairs of the party in the region.

The congress, codenamed “Odera 2027,” was held on Saturday, March 21, 2026, in Enugu, with party stakeholders in attendance.

In a statement issued by the Zonal Publicity Secretary, Emmanuel Ugbana, the process was described as transparent and in full compliance with the party’s constitution and the laws of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

“Those who said it could not be done are now left watching as others make it happen,” the statement read.

It noted that the successful conduct of the congress demonstrated the party’s renewed strength and commitment to repositioning itself in the South East ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The statement further clarified that individuals who had previously paraded themselves as zonal executives did so illegally, adding that their actions had been nullified by the party’s leadership and competent courts.

“The Enugu congress has now laid that matter to rest and ushered in a legitimate, unified leadership for the zone,” it stated.

The newly elected zonal executives include Ray Nnaji as National Vice Chairman (South East), Mike Ahumire as Zonal Secretary, and Emeka Okeke as Zonal Treasurer.

Others are Nsorom Nnamdi as Zonal Financial Secretary, Emmanuel O. Ekuma as Zonal Organising Secretary, and Ukpai Ukpairo as Zonal Legal Adviser.

Also elected are Emmanuel Ugbana as Zonal Publicity Secretary, Emeka Uzeugwu as Zonal Auditor, Uju Onyia as Zonal Women Leader, and Godswill N. as Zonal Youth Leader.

Zonal Ex-Officio Members members, who were also elected included Chief Augustine Okechukwu, Barr. Adindu Dick , Monday Nwangwu, Dr. Engr. Orji Adachie, Okechukwu Ekemezie, respectively

The statement said the party congratulated the newly elected officials and urged members, stakeholders, and supporters to rally behind them.

“They have already hit the ground running, and we are confident they will provide focused, inclusive, and result-oriented leadership as we prepare for greater victories ahead,” it added.

It reaffirmed the party’s resolve to rebuild and reposition the PDP in the South East for the 2027 general elections and beyond.

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, has directed his legal team to proceed with court action over allegations involving Mrs Tracy Ohiri, following what he described as failure to provide verifiable evidence to support her claims.

In a statement issued on Saturday in Abuja by his Senior Special Assistant on Media, Mr Francis Nwaze, the minister said the decision became necessary in the interest of truth and public clarity amid ongoing public discourse on the matter.

Umahi stated that two conditions had earlier been outlined for resolving the issue, including allowing the matter to be determined in court or the presentation of credible and verifiable evidence by Mrs Ohiri.

He said: “For the avoidance of doubt, the Honourable Minister had clearly stated that either the issue should be determined in court or Mrs Ohiri should provide verifiable evidence, including all relevant communications, to substantiate her claims.

“Following the failure to meet these conditions, particularly the inability to provide credible and verifiable evidence, the Minister has directed his legal team to proceed with all court processes to ensure that the truth is fully established.”

The minister also addressed issues surrounding the involvement of legal practitioner, Marshall Abubakar, noting that he acted in good faith and did not engage in any financial negotiations on behalf of Mrs Ohiri.

“Barr. Marshall Abubakar conducted himself with utmost decency and integrity throughout. He neither requested nor received any money from the Honourable Minister at any point,” he said.

According to Umahi, although some associates and well-meaning individuals had independently indicated willingness to assist Mrs Ohiri, there was no formal discussion or agreement on payment.

He added that he had been informed that some friends and associates were willing to contribute N1 billion if Mrs Ohiri could provide complete evidence, including logs and communications relating to the claims.
“The Minister is still awaiting the submission of such evidence,” the statement said.

Umahi further explained that his earlier silence on the matter, despite what he described as repeated provocations and public attacks, was deliberate and aimed at maintaining focus on national assignments.
“However, recent developments have made it necessary to respond in order to set the record straight,” he said.

The minister reiterated his commitment to delivering critical road infrastructure across the country, stressing that he would not be distracted from his mandate.

He also expressed appreciation to Nigerians who, according to him, had taken time to examine the issues critically and form informed opinions.

A group under the aegis of Ukawu Concerned Youths has appealed to the Ebonyi State Governor, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, to zone the All Progressives Congress (APC) ticket for the Onicha East State Constituency to Ukawu community ahead of the next electoral cycle.

The group made the appeal in a statement issued on Friday in Abakaliki by its spokesperson, Mr Eze Chukwuemeka.

Chukwuemeka said the call was based on the principles of equity, fairness and political balance, noting that Oshiri community had occupied the Assembly seat for about two decades.

According to him, the prolonged occupancy of the seat by one community undermines the spirit of inclusiveness and rotational representation within the constituency.

“We respectfully call on His Excellency to consider zoning the APC ticket to Ukawu.

“This, we believe, is necessary to promote unity, fairness and a sense of belonging among all communities in Onicha East,” he said.

The spokesperson added that Ukawu community had competent individuals with the capacity, experience and political exposure to represent the constituency effectively at the Ebonyi State House of Assembly.

He further noted that zoning the position to Ukawu would strengthen the APC’s grassroots support in the area.

“Granting this request will address long-standing concerns over marginalisation and enhance the party’s acceptability among the people,” he added.

The group, however, commended Gov. Nwifuru for his administration’s commitment to justice and equitable development, expressing confidence that he would give due consideration to their appeal.

Efforts by Eye Witness News to obtain reactions from the state government and the APC leadership in Ebonyi were unsuccessful as of the time of filing this report.

Political observers say the call for zoning may further stimulate internal discussions within the party as preparations begin for future elections in the state.

Onu, a legal practitioner and philanthropist, made the call in a statement on Sunday in Abakaliki.
He specifically encouraged members of the party in Onicha Local Government Area and Onicha West to stay united and committed to the ideals of the PDP.

According to him, the PDP remains a credible platform capable of restoring purposeful leadership, development and people-oriented governance in Ebonyi State.

He urged party members not to lose hope but to remain organised and dedicated to strengthening the party at the grassroots.

“The strength of the PDP lies in the resilience and commitment of its grassroots supporters. The party is already laying a solid foundation to reclaim its rightful place in Ebonyi in 2027,” he said.

The PDP chieftain also commended the newly elected state executives of the party led by Mr Chukwuma Igwe, at a peaceful State congress held Saturday in Abakaliki the state capital.

He expressed confidence in their capacity to reposition the party, deepen internal democracy and strengthen its structure across the state.

While congratulating the new leadership, Onu urged them to remain fair, inclusive and committed to the collective interest of party members.

He assured them of his continued support and collaboration as they work to rebuild and reposition the party.

Onu, however, reminded party faithful that preparations for the 2027 elections had begun and called on members across Ebonyi to remain focused and hopeful.

“Through unity and perseverance, the PDP will once again return to serve the good people of Ebonyi State,” he said.

NAUTH Management Prioritizes Student Welfare: Prof. Ugboaja Suspends Fee Increment.

Following a brief period of unrest at the College of Nursing, Nnamdi Azikiwe University Teaching Hospital (NAUTH), the Chief Medical Director, Prof. Joseph Ugboaja has once again demonstrated his nature of compassionate leadership by suspending the proposed tuition fee adjustment.

The decision comes after students of the school expressed concerns regarding a new fee structure intended to facilitate the institution’s transition into a premier ND/HND monotechnic.
In a swift response to the students' grievances, Prof. Ugboaja, in his characteristic nature as a listening father, directed an immediate return to the status quo, allowing students to continue payments under the old fee structure.

A LEADERSHIP OF LISTENING AND EMPATHY:

While the initial adjustment from ₦90,000 to ₦580,000 was designed to sustain high educational standards and upgrade infrastructure by the board and management of the school, Prof. Ugboaja acknowledged the current economic realities facing students and their families.

"Our goal is to build a world-class institution, but we will never do so at the expense of our students' well-being," said Prof. Ugboaja.

"As the leader of a management team that is responsive to the voices of our students, I have directed The immediate suspension of the proposed adjustment to have way for a more encompassing arrangement to include students' representatives.

KEY RESOLUTIONS AND THE PATH FORWARD:

To ensure a transparent and inclusive resolution, the CMD has institutionalized a collaborative approach:

* Establishment of a Review Committee: A joint body comprising School Management, the Governing Board, and Student Representatives has been formed to harmonize a sustainable fee structure.

* Commitment to Consultation: The CMD admitted that while the upgrade to the ND/HND program is vital, the students' concerns regarding the consultation process were valid and would be addressed moving forward.

* Guaranteed Access to Education: Prof. Ugboaja has given a firm assurance that no student will be forced out of school due to financial constraints during this transition period.

STUDENTS REAFFIRM CONFIDENCE IN "FATHERLY " LEADERSHIP:

The atmosphere at the school has shifted from that of confrontation to appreciation as was very noticeable during interviews with the media, including Blaze FM. The students variously described the CMD as a compassionate father with listening ears and a humane leader.

Student representatives noted that they were not surprised at the Ochinanwata's intervention, given his pedigree as a considerate leader and observed that his timely intervention has restored calm in the institution and bolstered their confidence in his administration.
"We knew that Ochinanwata would listen. He is a very compassionate leader. His decision to halt the implementation shows he is a father who feels the pulse of the common student," one representative stated.

As of Wednesday, March 11th, academic activities have fully resumed. The gates are open, lectures are in progress, and the spirit of solidarity between the management and the student body has never been stronger.

The International Fund for Agriculturall Development (IFAD) assisted Value Chain Development Programme ( VCDP) has urged women in Ebonyi state to support their families and generally uplift the society.

The State Programme Coordinator (SPC) of IFAD- VCDP, Chief Sunday Ituma made the call in Abakaliki during the celebration of the International Women's Day for participating women networks of its programme.

Ituma urged the women to enhance efforts to achieve a better society by being economically engaged and assist their husbands in their homes.

"You should also play active roles to achieve women rights, justice and empowerment for the female folk.

"You should also work harder to attain positions of authority with the present call for the participation of more women in politics."

He commended the women drawn across the eight participating LGAs of the state for their exhibitiion of various nutritional items, march past among other activities, at the event.

The State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources Mrs Nkechinyere Iyioku, commended the women for their resilience in empowering themselves and assisting their familiies.

Iyioku, represented by the Head of Livestock Unit in the ministry, Mrs Ngozi Emeka--Anosike, said the women showcased nutritional food items during the exhibition.

"The food items contain protein, vitamins among other nutrients which buttresses the call for Nigerians to go back to natural foods.

"We presently consume junk food items and such has adverse effects on our healths."

She urged the women to enhance their economic capabilities as time has passed when they stay indoors and leave the men to fend for their families.

Mrs Fransisca Anya, The Rural Institution Gender Youth Mainstreaming Officer of Ebonyi IFAD--VCDP said the women produced the food under the programme's tutulage.

Anya said the food items include: garri, cassava, vegetables, local delicacies such as soups among other natural consumables.

"IFAD--VCDP would continue appreciating the roles of women in family support and would continue enlightening them on ways to enhance their economic capabilities.

Ituma urged the women to enhance efforts to achieve a better society by being economically engaged and assist their husbands in their homes.

"You should also play active roles to achieve women rights, justice and empowerment for the female folk.

"You should also work harder to attain positions of authority with the present call for the participation of more women in politics."

He commended the women drawn across the eight participating LGAs of the state for their exhibitiion of various nutritional items, march past among other activities, at the event.

The State Commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources Mrs Nkechinyere Iyioku, commended the women for their resilience in empowering themselves and assisting their familiies.

Iyioku, represented by the Head of Livestock Unit in the ministry, Mrs Ngozi Emeka--Anosike, said the women showcased nutritional food items during the exhibition.

"The food items contain protein, vitamins among other nutrients which buttresses the call for Nigerians to go back to natural foods.

"We presently consume junk food items and such has adverse effects on our healths."

She urged the women to enhance their economic capabilities as time has passed when they stay indoors and leave the men to fend for their families.

Mrs Fransisca Anya, The Rural Institution Gender Youth Mainstreaming Officer of Ebonyi IFAD--VCDP said the women produced the food under the programme's tutulage.

Anya said the food items include: garri, cassava, vegetables, local delicacies such as soups among other natural consumables.

"IFAD--VCDP would continue appreciating the roles of women in family support and would continue enlightening them on ways to enhance their economic capabilities.

This is Mrs Nwankwo Eke, a native of Nzashi community in Ikwo Local Government area of Ebonyi state, a woman who has called for the Ebonyi State Government to assist her in the recovery of her son, (name withheld) who was allegedly taken to cotonou, In Benin Republic in search of a greener pasture.

However, four years later, the child’s whereabout has become uncertain, the suspect, Mr Ike Chukwu omenka, who took the child has refused to provide information to the his recove.

NGO Urges Tinubu to take action on over 120M nigerians living in abject poverty, 18M Out-of-School Children




One Youth Global has raised fresh alarm over Nigeria’s deepening social crisis, saying more than 120 million people are living in extreme poverty while over 18 million children remain out of school.

The organisation called on the administration of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to adopt urgent and practical policies to expand access to education, improve school infrastructure, and reward academic excellence.

The President of One Youth Global, Mr. Uchechukwu Agbo, made the remarks ahead of Spark Nation 3.0, the organisation’s flagship quiz and debate competition for secondary schools across West and Central Africa, scheduled to hold in Abakaliki, Ebonyi State, between April and June 2026.

Agbo said the country must treat the education crisis as a national emergency, “Currently, over 18 million children are still out of school in Nigeria. This is a state of emergency,” he said.

“For the nation to move forward, the Federal Government needs to do more to ensure that more young people enrol, stay through, and graduate from schools across Nigeria.”

He said One Youth Global had already awarded over 100 scholarships across different levels of education in about 22 states as part of efforts to reduce the number of out-of-school children, adding that the initiative would expand to West and Central Africa this year, “By 2027, we are doing the whole of Africa,” Agbo said.

He also called for a major review of the nation’s curriculum, arguing that young people must be equipped with practical knowledge and problem-solving skills relevant to the modern world.

“As we work to promote enrolment and excellence in our school system, I think we also need to review our curricula to meet 21st-century needs,” he said.

“Our young people need to be empowered with the right knowledge. We need to promote excellence in terms of creating actionable solutions to societal problems, such that the question shifts from what would you want to be when you grow up to which problem would you want to solve when you grow up.”

On the welfare of teachers, Agbo said poor remuneration was undermining the profession and discouraging capable people from entering it.

“There seems to be a dynamic where only people who are not able to get jobs in other places get to become teachers these days because teachers are so poorly paid,” he said. “If we are to promote excellence, we need to pay our teachers better.”

He further urged Nigerians in the diaspora to invest in education in their home communities, insisting that the government alone could not fix the problem.

“Reshaping our education ecosystem cannot be done by the government alone,” he said. “Those who have travelled should look back and ensure that they invest in the educational sector of their respective communities so that more people can go to school.”

Agbo linked the education crisis to the country’s insecurity, noting that a large proportion of out-of-school children are in northern Nigeria, where violence is most prevalent.

“Because I think that’s one of the easiest ways to cut down on crime,” he said. “Over 70 per cent of that number live in northern Nigeria, where the incidence of terrorism is highest within the country. This tells a story of a natural nexus between low literacy and insecurity. So the more educated the people are, the less incidence of insecurity you see in that environment.”

He also called on governments at all levels to urgently equip schools with modern learning facilities, especially laboratories and libraries.

“Our schools are very, very under-equipped,” Agbo said. “The average science student in Nigeria knows a lot about theory.

"They know very little about practicals, and that’s basically because the schools are dilapidated. They don’t have equipment to run practicals.”

He added that meaningful reform would require deliberate investment in public schools across the country.

“University labs need to be equipped. Secondary school labs need to be equipped. Books need to be put in the libraries,” he said.

“A number of government-owned primary and secondary schools in Nigeria do not have libraries.” he stated

The Ebonyi State Chapter of the Obidient Movement has condemned the killing of a traditional ruler in the state, who is the father of the former Deputy Governor of Ebonyi, Barr. Kelechi Igwe.

The condemnation was contained in a press statement issued to journalists on Sunday in Abakaliki by the state coordinator of the movement, Mr Innocent Igiri.

Igiri described the incident as shocking, unfortunate and unacceptable, urging security agencies to ensure that the perpetrators are apprehended and brought to justice.

He said the killing of the monarch was a grave attack on the peace and sanctity of traditional institutions in the state.

According to him, such acts of violence undermine the collective efforts of government and citizens toward sustaining peace and development in Ebonyi.

“The Obidient Movement in Ebonyi State strongly condemns the gruesome killing of the traditional ruler, who is also the father of former Deputy Governor, Barr. Kelechi Igwe.

“This barbaric act is not only an assault on the revered traditional institution but also a threat to the peace and stability of our communities,” he said.

Igiri called on security agencies to intensify investigations into the incident and ensure that those responsible are identified and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

He also urged residents of the state to remain calm and cooperate with security agencies by providing useful information that could aid the investigation.

The Obidient Movement sympathised with the family of the deceased, the people of the community, and the government of Ebonyi over the unfortunate incident.

It prayed for the peaceful repose of the soul of the deceased and called for renewed commitment to peace and security across the state.

The Immediate Past Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports in Ebonyi State, Hon. Charles Akpu-Enika has said that the Silverbird Group Extraordinary Personality of the Year award on Engr David Umahi, has shown that Nigerians appreciate his wondrous feats on road infrastructure.

Akpu-Enika in an interview with newsmen in Abakaliki said that at a time some "shenagnians" were casting aspersions on the Minister of Works through a falacious debt owed a woman, Nigerians were appreciating the miracle he was performing on Nigerian roads.

The "Game Changer" as he is known in the Ebonyi political and social circles, said that the outpour of support on the minister from Nigerians shows that they can identify cheap blackmail on a performing personality.

"The silverbird award on the minister further credenced the fact that Umahi is actually practicalising President Bola Tinubu's renewed hope mandate on roads and related infrastructure across the country.

"Umahi has an impeccable record in office: from party chairman, deputy governor, governor, senator and minister and has never been tainted with any scandal.

"For a man with such magnificent record and sojourn in public office to be associated with a debt of mere promotional item,, is an absurdity of the highest order.

"Nigerians are united in chorusing that Umahi’s impact since assuming office as minister of works is experience-driven and innovative in meeting infrastructural challenges."

He urged the minister to remain undaunted in his unmatched dexterity in delivering the goods, noting that Nigerians were solidly behind him.

"I served under Umahi for 8 years as a Commissioner and cannot quantify his motivational and administrative impact on my person.

Ebonyi State Capital, Abakaliki, at the weekend witnessed a total shutdown as the state foremost university, EBSU, Matriculated over 11500 students.

It was gathered that the 28th matriculation ceremony of the university witnessed a Mammoth turnout of citizens and it is the highest intake, since the creation of the state in 1996.

The event was held at the university's permanent site in Ezzangbo, Ohaukwu Local Government Area of Ebonyi state.

The governor of Ebonyi State, Francis Nwifuru who addressed the stakeholders and students, reiterated his administration's unflinching commitment towards sound and quality Education in State.

He enumerated some interventions his administration' has carried out in the University to include; increased monthly subvention, increment of staff salary, offsetting of debts owed by the University infrastructure facelift among others.

The Governor, represented by the commissioner for Education, Dr Donatus Ilang, commended the University Management for restoring the University's excellence status.

He congratulated and enjoined the newly matriculated student to face their studies which is the sole aim of being in the institution and shun every act capable of delaying or truncating their studies

Michael Ugota Awoke said, on assumption of office last year, he and the principal officer were confronted with the challenges of accreditation of faculty of Engineering and environmental studies.

They were equally confronted with the accreditation of Steven other programs, but announced that five out of the seven programs has been fully accredited.

Aside accreditation, Prof Awoke revealed that the University is fully digitized and students can access the University programs at a click of button. He stated further that students can pay their school fees online without necessarily going through the bursary.

The Vice Chancellor said his administration has eradicated the menace of cultism and other social vices in the University community.

He equally, revealed that the issue of sorting and examination malpractice is now thing of the past and warned the new students not to engage in such illegal activity as it is prohibited in the University.

Prof Awoke opined that the era of sexual harassment and intimidation of students by their lecturers are gone, and warned students not to engage in indecent dresses to seduce lecturers.

Prof Awoke expressed full determination of his administration's commitment to restoring the University to the path of academic excellence.

He commended the State Governor, Chief Francis Nwifuru for prioritizing Education in the State, assuming him that the huge investment made the University will not be regretted.

Responding, the DVC Academics, Prof. Ike-Elechi Ogba who is the Chairman of the Ceremony and planning, emphasized the committed efforts of the university to boost academic learning and quality exams.

He urged the new intakes to study hard to ensure success in their exams, just as he assured them of the readiness of the varsity to conduct free, fair and credible exams at all times.

The Nigeria Youth Organisation (NYO) has expressed deep concern over online videos and social media commentaries against Works Minister, Sen David Umahi by one Mrs. Tracy Ohiri which it said was aimed at discrediting him.

The organization said in one of the videos currently trending across multiple digital platforms, Mrs. Ohiri made remarks which not only sought to malign the Minister but also extended disparaging commentary towards the prosecutorial authority involved in ongoing legal processes, going as far as describing the prosecutor as a criminal.

In a statement signed by its President, Okorie C. Okorie and Secretary, Oluwabukunmi Awolola , the organization observed that a careful review of the said publications reveals speeches that are largely incoherent and videos that are inconsistent in both content and presentation.

"Notably, the commentator has also been inconsistent with respect to the dates and figures of money allegedly owed — at one instance alleging a sum of ₦25,000,000 and at another ₦250,000,000, while also variously referencing timelines of 3 years, 9 years and 12 years — thereby raising further concerns as to the credibility of the claims being propagated in the public space.

"While the Nigeria Youth Organisation respects the constitutional right of every Nigerian to freedom of expression, we strongly condemn the growing trend of reckless, unsubstantiated and potentially coordinated online attacks targeted at public officials who are actively engaged in national development efforts.

"We advise Nigerians to exercise caution in consuming digital content and to refrain from believing everything encountered online without undertaking basic and responsible verification.

"We are particularly concerned by the timing, pattern and amplification of these commentaries, which raise legitimate questions as to whether such publications are spontaneous expressions of opinion or part of a sponsored attempt to distract and undermine the ongoing infrastructural reforms being championed by the Honourable Minister of Works. Nigerians must guard against being swayed by sentiment and emotional manipulation capable of distorting objective public discourse.

"If indeed Mrs. Tracy Nicholas Ohiri believes she has a valid cause of action against the Honourable Minister, the appropriate forum for ventilating such grievances remains a court of competent jurisdiction and not the court of social media opinion.

"Senator Engr. David Nweze Umahi has, since assumption of office, distinguished himself through measurable performance in the execution and revitalisation of critical road infrastructure across the federation. His stewardship in the works sector has attracted commendation from stakeholders across professional, civic and youth constituencies. He undoubtedly deserves accolades for the giant strides he has recorded so far rather than the vilification arising from sponsored emotional and blackmailing contents.

"At a time when Nigeria requires focused leadership and sustained commitment towards economic recovery through infrastructural development, the Nigeria Youth Organisation considers any deliberate attempt to derail performing public servants through orchestrated misinformation campaigns as deeply regrettable and inimical to national progress.

"Accordingly, we call on the relevant security and regulatory agencies to investigate the origin, intent and possible sponsorship behind these trending publications in order to ascertain whether they form part of a coordinated digital misinformation campaign designed to discredit a serving public official and impede ongoing developmental initiatives.

"The Nigeria Youth Organisation wishes to reiterate its unwavering support for accountability, due process and responsible civic engagement. However, such engagement must be pursued within the bounds of decency, truth and national interest.

"For the avoidance of doubt, Nigerian youths will resist any attempt to coerce or pressure the Honourable Minister into making any form of payment outside the dictates of the law, and should any such payment be made without due judicial pronouncement, we shall not hesitate to seek appropriate legal redress in a court of competent jurisdiction", the organization said.

Eternal Brothers Club's BOT receives 2026 budget estimate from executive


The Eternal Brothers Club, a fledging social and humanitarian outfit has presented its 2026 budget of N105million to its Board of Trustees (BOT) in an elaborate ceremony in Abakaliki.

The National President of the club, Hon. Charles Akpu-Enika led the club's executive to present the budget to the Chairman of the BOT and Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports in Ebonyi state, Rt. Hon. Richard Idike.

Akpu-Enika, the Immediate Past Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports in the state, said the 2026 budget of consolidation recorded a monumental increase from the 2025 budget of N40.5million.

The club's president said the budget derives from 11 revenue streams and comes with a projected expenditure of N104.6 million covering 13:major expenditure categories.

"The 2026 budget's expected income is predicated on: sales from the 2026 calender, New intake of 26 members at N800,000 fee each, constitution launch by 36 new members, monthly dues and development levy among others.

"There are also target incomes from the club's investment from June--December 2026, incomes from lateness, absenteeism and fines, hosting payment by 200 members 2025 debt recovery among others."

He noted that expected 2026 expenditure of the club would be on April road walk for members, 2025 carryover debt to 2026, 2026 capital projects, the general meetings of June and August, unforseen and overhead among others.

"We are pleased to report that with your partnership and approval in 2025, the club exceeded its projected budgetary performance.

"Revenue generation surpassed expectations and the additional funds were judiciously applied to key developmental projects.

"It can be recalled that the current administration embarked on about 90 percent reconstruction of the project we had in 2024 and we are proud that two buildings have been successfully erected at the club headquarters, awaiting roofing.

"We are committed to fulfilling the promises and obligations made to our members and through financial management and transparency, we were also able to execute additional impactful initiatives not originally captured in the 2025 budget.

He noted that the club's strategic outlook for 2026 includes the operational commencement of a six-room gate house by May 2026.

"Additionally, we project that the main building comprising of four rooms, a hall and lounge would be completed before the end of the year and we anticipate to start generating returns on these investments by June 2026.

"Our objective in the medium term, is to reduce dues and levies payable by members starting from 2027".

The Chairman of the club's BOT, Rt. Hon Richard Idike commended the executive for the honour and promised that the BOT will critically review the budget.

Idike described the budget as well articulated and presented, noting that issues around budgets goes beyond presentation but implementation.

"The budget of 2025 can be seen to be well presented and we hope that the 2026 own would usher more good tidings and make the club better.

"We are proud of the executive arm of the club and pledge to continue offering our support and collaboration to achieve all set goals."

He noted that the gigantic buildings under construction at the club 's headquarters remains milestones that continue to puzzle everyone noting that such could only be possible by God's grace.

"It is not easy to start a building foundation when one sees the drawing as many people would be discouraged by the enormity.

"The spirit of Senator David Umahi in you the president however broke all casts of unbelief as work must go on while we see what happens.

"We cannot have a better president in the club than you now and we would only crave for your continuity in office."

FG Collaborates with DUFUTH on Free Cancer Screening, Commissions Projects in Hospital.



The Federal Ministry of health and social welfare has reiterated its resolve to drive steady progress and support innovations in the teaching hospitals and other federal health institutions across Nigeria, in line with the Renewed hope agenda of President Bola Tinubu.

Permanent Secretary of the Ministry, Ms Daju Kachollom, gave the assurance on Tuesday while addressing the Management of David Umahi Federal Teaching hospital Uburu, in Ohaozara local government area of Ebonyi state.

Kachollom was on tour of the hospital as part of activities in her 2-day official visit to Ebonyi state to flags-off the nationwide cancer awareness and free cancer screening programme for the Southeast zone of the country.

Kachollom, described Cancer as one of the non-communicable diseases that have ravaged and still ravaging Nigerians. She advocated preventive rather than curative measures as the best bet for eradicating the disease, adding that teaching citizens how to live healthy lives will make them spend less time in hospitals and drastically reduce medical expenses.

She noted that since the coming on board of President Tinubu with the Renewed Hope Agenda, the health sector has changed for better, adding that the Federal Ministry of Health, under the current management has from inception developed a 4-point agenda bordering on governance and leadership, quality health outcome and unlocking the value chain which aims to drive progress in the Ministry and its agencies which includes the hospitals.

The permanent secretary expressed pride in the observable leadership and professional ingenuity of DUFUTH's Chief Medical Director, Professor Uzoma Maryrose Agwu, which has accounted for the noticeable steady progress in the hospital driven by dedication and unity of purpose among staff and management.

She pledged to transmit the many challenges of the newest teaching hospital's to appropriate quarters for necessary action.

The CMD in her address explained that in spite of the many challenges facing the DUFUTH as a new teaching hospital, it has within the last three years grown in leaps in its mission of breaking the tides of foreign medical tourism through excellent breakthroughs in diverse areas of medical practice, adding that it has become a centre of excellence in clinical and internship training, and effectively discharging its corporate social responsibilities in free medical examination and treatment of diverse diseases including cancer screening, among others.

She noted that despite challenges, the teaching hospital has provided free medical treatment to at least 8,000 vulnerable individuals, including children, the elderly, indigent persons and pregnant women through its first phase of medical extension programme and outreaches across the state.

The medical extension programme was carried out in its recently activated four rural primary healthcare centres handed over to it by the state government.

Professor Agwu who enumerated some of the challenges of the hospital to include absence of steady water supply source, shortage/epileptic power supply from public energy source and manpower shortages, among others, appealed for the intervention of the federal government through the Federal Ministry of Health to address them.

She commended President Bola Tinubu for the great impact his Renewed Hope Agenda is making in the health and other sector in the country.

She also applauded the competence and dedication of the coordinating Minister of Health and Social welfare, Prof. Muhammad Ali Pate and the Permanent Secretary in driving the agenda which has paid-off in DUFUTH and other federal health institutions.

She added: Distinguished guests, may I inform you all that despite the challenges we navigate as a new teaching hospital, DUFUTH has continued to coast on gallantly.

"In the last three years and counting, we have rolled out a number of medical outreaches within and outside our host community, offering screenings for cervical cancer, blood sugar levels, eye exams, routine dental check-ups, blood pressure checks, de-worming exercises, nutritional talks, distribution of drugs and interventional items, and have deployed our professionals to the field to oversee and coordinate these medical initiatives.

"We have also screened for diseases such as hypertension, malaria, tuberculosis and others that, if discovered early and treated, could be cured".

According to her, the hospital has further expanded its educational initiatives by establishing a thriving college of Health Technology which will soon commence its third batch students admission, as well as a college of Nursing Sciences soon to be launched, among other achievements.

Prof. Agwu further appealed for increased budgetary allocation to enable the hospital continue to deliver in its vision and mission as the newest and most proficient Federal Teaching Hospital in the South East.

"The weight of our budgetary allocation is so minimal to the volume of structural and super structural facilities required to keep the Teaching Hospital afloat and sustain the existing standard as a center of medical excellence.

"We plead that DUFUTH pass as one of the receivers of the numerous benefits that flow from government", Prof. Agwu stressed.

The Permanent Secretary, during the visit commissioned some newly procured electric stretcher trolleys by the hospital and its newly equipped Physiotherapy centre. She also flagged-off the hospital's free cancer screening exercise which is in collaboration with the the Federal Ministry.

The African Democratic Congress, ADC, in Ebonyi State has inaugurated its State Transition Committee ahead of its ward, local government, and state congresses, warning members against sabotaging the party’s efforts to position itself for victory in the 2027 general elections.

The state leader of the party, Sunday Opoke, said the ADC is determined to “rescue Nigeria from the ditch and depth of poverty, insecurity, impunity, bad governance, and corruption,” which he claimed have eroded the country’s social and economic systems.

Opoke, who was the 2023 governorship candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP) in Ebonyi State, cautioned party members against betrayal, sabotage, and internal wrangling.

He alleged that some individuals currently parading themselves as ADC leaders in the state are government loyalists bent on frustrating efforts to reposition the party.

According to him, Nigeria is on the brink of collapse, with once-functional institutions deteriorating steadily.

"Everything we used to know as functional in this country has been eroded. Today, if you are in a government school, it is as if you are not in school. In our time, it was the reverse. Today, there is no functional health system. Poverty is widespread. We are under what can best be described as kleptocratic governance,” he said.

He added that Nigerians cannot afford to remain passive while the nation declines, stressing that the ADC emerged to provide credible leadership and restore hope.

He further alleged that the Ebonyi State Government had strategically planted loyalists within the ADC to hijack its structures.

According to him, in several local government areas, individuals parading as ADC executives are political appointees serving as personal assistants to commissioners, special assistants to council chairmen, or coordinators of development centres under the current administration.

He said the situation has created confusion and discouraged prospective members who are willing to join what he described as a genuine movement for change.

"If you are here to compromise or act as a stooge of the government, the system will eject you. We are building a transparent structure anchored on good governance, inclusiveness, responsiveness, respect for the rule of law, and prioritising the welfare and security of Nigerians,” he stated.

Opoke lamented the prevailing insecurity in the country, saying governance must be anchored on the security and welfare of the people.

“People are massacred unchecked and unabated. Nigerians can no longer afford three square meals. They are bleeding and asking when relief will come. But there is hope", he added.


Inaugurating the Transition Committee, Chief Ogbonnia Oko Enyim described the move as a bold step to reclaim the party from alleged hijackers.

He said the committee was a product of courage, conviction, and commitment to due process.

“The mandate is clear: to restore order and strengthen the structures of the party across the 13 local government areas of Ebonyi State. The committee is expected to prepare the party for credible congresses and electoral victory in 2027,” he said.

He stressed that the ADC would not be hijacked, weakened, or reduced to a platform for personal ambition.

“We stand for internal democracy, unity, discipline, and responsible leadership. To the members of this committee, history has placed a responsibility on your shoulders. Build a structure that reflects the true will of our members and the aspirations of the people,” he charged.

Also speaking, the Chairman of the ADC Movement in Ebonyi State, Barrister Solomon Chinedu Adum, urged members not to be intimidated by alleged harassment or pressure from the ruling party.

He assured that the ADC would deploy every legal means available to resist intimidation and protect its members.

Adum called for unity, cooperation, and commitment, noting that Nigerians are looking to the ADC for solutions to hunger, insecurity, economic hardship, and what he described as persistent governance failures.

The inauguration concluded with a renewed pledge by party leaders to strengthen internal structures and mobilise support ahead of the 2027 polls.

The Obidients Movement in Ebonyi State has rejected remarks attributed to the Minister of Works, David Umahi, describing the Labour Party’s former presidential candidate, Peter Obi, as an “Igbo candidate.”

In a statement issued on Sunday by a chieftain of the movement in the state, Mr Innocent Igiri, the group said Obi’s political aspiration transcends ethnic considerations and is driven by a national agenda.

Igiri stated that portraying Obi as an ethnic candidate was misleading, insisting that he represents what the movement termed a “New Nigeria” project.

“Peter Obi is not an Igbo candidate. He is our New Nigeria candidate,” he said.

The movement also criticised what it described as “anti-Obi tactics,” arguing that such narratives would not weaken the resolve of Obi’s supporters ahead of the 2027 general elections.

According to Igiri, the political discourse should focus on governance and national development rather than ethnic identity.

He added that the Obidients Movement remained committed to its vision of a reformed Nigeria, which he said prioritises accountability and good governance.

The statement comes amid ongoing political exchanges among stakeholders as alignments gradually build toward the 2027 elections.

Standardisation: SON issues MANCAP certificates to 15 companies for 16 products in Ebonyi

The Standards Organization of Nigeria (SON), has certified 16 products across 15 companies in Ebonyi with its Mandatory Conformity Assessment Programme (MANCAP).

Dr Ifeanyi Okeke, Director-General of SON in his keynote address disclosed this in Abakaliki on Monday, at the Presentation of MANCAP Certificates to businesses in the state.

Okeke said the event was a celebration of excellence, innovation and commitment of local manufacturers to meet and surpass standards.

Okeke, represented by Mr Chukwuma Aharanwa, Head of South-East Regional Operations, said MANCAP ensured that all locally manufactured products complied with Nigerian Industrial Standards before they were presented for sale in the market or exported.

Our correspondent reports that the MANCAP-certified businesses include: Ifex-Wisdom Nigerian limited, the manufacturer of Ifewis oil and Rossy vegetable oil.

The Director-General noted that MANCAP also protected customers, foster fair competition and reinforced the integrity of the manufacturing sector.

"Following the issuance of MANCAP certificates to companies, we will undertake periodic factory inspections, sampling and laboratory testing to ensure that the products certified today continue to meet the requirements of the relevant standards that have earned your establishments these certifications.

"The products are to be revalidated every three years, and it is of utmost importance that you note that the certificate issued shall be withdrawn or suspended if the products fail to meet the minimum requirements," he explained.

Earlier in his welcome address, Mr Samuel Arotiowa, SON's Coordinator in Ebonyi, said beyond certifying manufacturing processes, they also offered other services which supported company operations.

Arotiowa reiterated SON’s commitment towards ensuring quality products get to consumers and urged manufacturers to take the advantage of their services.

"MANCAP helps promote consumers’ confidence," he added.

Responding on behalf of other companies, Mr Ernest Offor, Managing Director, Evergreen Clumarie Nigeria Ltd, said they were happy to receive the certification after rigorous processes.

Offor commended SON for their support and commitment towards ensuring their products met the required standard

"We are happy that our product can now compete in local and international markets," he added.

MANCAP is a mandatory product certification scheme established by SON to ensure that all locally manufactured products conform to relevant Nigerian industrial standards before being presented for sale or export.

Igbo-Etiti Council Boss inaugurates Civil Defence Command in Nkporogwo Ukehe, others


The Chairman of Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area, Dr. Eric Odo, has commissioned a Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) Area Command in Nkporogwo Ukehe and two Divisional offices in Ukopi Ekwegbe and Ohodo.



Speaking at the event on Wednesday, Odo described the development as part of his administration’s efforts to strengthen security and protect lives and property in the area.



He said the council is the first in Enugu State, and possibly Nigeria, to construct, equip and furnish federal security infrastructure in three locations, in order to make Igbo-Etiti unattractive to criminals.



“No meaningful development can take place in an insecure environment. No investor will invest where the safety of lives and property is not guaranteed.



“The newly commissioned facilities send a clear message that Igbo-Etiti will no longer be a safe haven for criminals,” Odo hinted.



The council boss stated that the presence of the NSCDC Area Command and Divisional offices have usher in a new era of crime prevention and rapid-response security operations.



He maintained that this would enable the officers to respond swiftly to distress calls and protect critical infrastructure such as schools, water facilities, electrical installations and other government assets from vandalism.



Odo further said his administration would continue to provide logistics support to the commands, strengthen joint security operations, expand community intelligence gathering, invest in peace-building and youth empowerment initiatives.



Commissioning the facilities, the NSCDC Commandant-General, Prof. Ahmed Audi, commended the Igbo-Etiti council boss for constructing the area command and the divisional offices, describing the gesture as laudable.



Audi, represented by the Zonal Commander in charge of Zone 13 Awka, ACG Cyprian Nwannukwu, expressed satisfaction and gave the assurance that more personnel would be posted to the area.



The NSCDC boss enjoined residents of Igbo-Etiti to provide credible intelligence information to enable the personnel tackle insecurity, noting that peace has come to Igbo-Etiti.



Also, the President-General of Ukopi Ekwegbe Town Union, Mr. Leonard Abonyi, expressed optimism that the divisional office would help to improve security in the community, and pledged their support to him.



The highpoint of the commissioning was the presentation of Hilux pick-up vehicle to assist the movement of the NSCDC personnel.

The Eternal Brothers Club, a humanitarian and social - waxing organisation says it has fully mobilised its members to participate in the ongoing Continuos Voters Registration (CRV) exercise in actively preparing for the 2027 general elections.

The club made up distinguished individuals from the political, business, academia and other strata of the society says members have massively and positively reacted to the ongoing exercise being conducted by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Dr Kelechukwu Okezie, the Deputy President of the club made the disclosure in an interview noting that members would not be left out in the processes heralding the 2027 general elections in the country.

"Members are expected to elect leaders of their choices in all positions available in the elections and this can only be done through the instrumentality of voting.

"The PVC ensures the exercising of this franchise and members who have not been registered by INEC to vote have been full mobilised to do so.

"We also extend the same noble message to Nigerians to participate in the exercise in sustaining the nation's democratic ideals."

He corrected the notion in some quarters that votes do not count in the country, noting that voting remains the only way to elect good leaders and reject the bad ones.

"Votes have counted significantly in the country with the election of unheralded persons into various positions in the last general elections, a vivid example.

"We have to come out en masse, vote and protect the votes as apathy towards voting gives room for the feared manipulations.

"The recent passage of the bill to adopt the electronic transmission of results by the Senate is a major boost for the quest and yearnings that votes should count.,"

The Club's President, Hon Charles Akpu-Enika said the members were law abiding citizens of the country who are saddled with responsibilities of moulding and shaping the society.

"The electoral process is an opportunity to get things right in the country and we would not be left behind.

"We understand that sustaining the nation's democratic process is a collective responsibility and responsiveness to such is a priority to us.

"The club has grown in leaps and bounds and has continued to meet the yearnings of the society in all ramifications.."

The Labour Party (LP) in Ebonyi says it will resist any alleged attempt by the Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC) to rig the forthcoming Local Government elections in favour of the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).

The party made this known at a press conference held at its secretariat in Abakaliki, ahead of the Local Government elections scheduled for August.

The LP, while affirming its readiness to participate in the polls, dismissed claims by EBSIEC that the party’s state executive council was not recognised by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Speaking at the briefing, the Chairman of the party in the state, Chief Henry Ude, said the process outlined by EBSIEC was not favourable to the party but expressed satisfaction that LP had fulfilled all requirements for participation in the election.

"After all the hurdles , we were able to fulfill all righteousness by meeting up with our obligations concerning our participation in the forthcoming local government election and by tomorrow we will be submitting our list to EBSIEC and we hope that the campaign and the election proper will be transparent and we the members of the Labour Party are fully prepared and when the timetable of EBSIEC comes out time for campaign.

"We will campaign vigorously because the Labour Party is the only opposition now that we can see in Ebony State. And with what has just happened during the sells of forms of the ruling party, this is an opportunity for those that were short-change, those that were used and dumped" Chief Ude said.

Ude, who further dismissed claims questioning the authenticity of the state executive by EBSIEC, clarified that the leadership was duly recognised by INEC and the party’s National Secretariat.

"If you have been following the general situation in the country, you will note that the Supreme Court has already given judgment concerning the leadership of the Labour Party in favour of our national chairman presently, Senator Nainadi Ousmane and the National Secretary, Senator Darlington Nwokocha.

"And the Federal High Court Abuja recently, this January, reaffirmed the decision of the Apex Court. And they also ordered INEC to remove the name of Julius Abure and replace them with that of Senator Nenadi Usman,. So, as we speak, what the jettisoned Chairman is saying is baseless.

"He is just dribbling himself. He knows the truth.
And we presented them with all the evidences. And based on that, they are now communicating with my office directly. You can have a look. What is this? us. If we are not recognized, why keeping an open communication with us?" He clarified.

Also speaking, the State Secretary of the party, Comrade Innocent Igiri, warned against any alleged plan by EBSIEC to rig the election in favour of the APC, stating that such move would be resisted by the people of the state.

"In support of what the chairman has said, I want to make it clear that any attempt by EBSIEC to rig the forthcoming 2026 LGA election in Ebonyi State will be fully resisted by Ebonyi people. We are ready.

"EBSIEC should be independent. We want to say it again, Ebonyi people will resist any single attempt. We are following the processes. Our eyes are on the ball. We are looking at taking a lot of local governments and words. We are not missing any targets. We have completed all the processes. Submitted. Igiri said.

Igiri also said the party had only one recognised secretariat in the state and issued a 48-hour ultimatum to alleged impostors to desist from parading themselves as party officials.

He further called on Ebonyi residents to mobilise fully for the Labour Party in the forthcoming elections and ensure that the party’s votes were protected.

...says the facility has the government Approval, and its now functioning



The Chairman of Ezza North local government area, Moses Ogodo-Ali, has applauded governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State, for his prompt intervention that resulted in the unsealing of his hotel facility.

..,. learnt that the facility was reportedly shut down and occupants dragged out by suspected thugs working for the ministry of capital City and urban development over alleged failure to secure approval for the facility.

Ogodo-Ali, who made this known while reacting to the development, insisted that the facility had an approval in 2013 by the same ministry.

He added that: "The commissioner was talking about the issue of space. He was advising me to acquire more places to add because of the space. And we are making arrangements to acquire other places to add and expand the hotel.

"we got an architect who put up a drawing. And immediately the drawing was out.

"We sent it to his office for approval. Little did we know that they had not even started work on it before this action commenced. The hotel has been approved since 2013.

"And the approval I have shown to you. And we are talking about the next expansion. I don't know how they got to the main hotel to seal the hotel.

"But the good news is that the executive governor, Francis Nwifuru has intervened and has come to unseal the hotel. We are one government. We cannot fight ourselves.

"We do not think about any other thing except that the hotel has been unsealed. And we have made promises that we are going to acquire more lands around to create more space for the hotel.

"But why everybody is interested in this one is not to the best of my knowledge. But the truth of the matter is that the hotel has been unsealed. And the document for the approval of the expansion of the hotel is on his table.

"So, he has a duty to send his men to supervise the work, to test the quality of the work that is going on. Because we cannot fold our hands and allow our space to be idle. We must be doing something on it.

"But his action is to protect his work and do his work. So I'm not against him. But the truth is that to propagate that we didn't have approval for the hotel is what I don't believe in.

"Although I read part of the thing he wrote when the commissioner responded to the press. He said that the old building was approved. But the new one is yet to be approved.

"That is lying on his table. He didn't deny it. So I'm not quarrelling with him. The hotel facility is unsealed. And it's functioning. No problems" he stated.

He expressed regret that some of the occupants of the facility were reportedly dragged out "Those of them (occupants) who were chased out by thugs should come back. We have one system and we have one governor. And the governor has made a statement that the hotel be opened.
He however, dismissed the rumours making the rounds that the shutting down of the hotel facility is remembered by political opponents, who allegedly want to bring him down.

"I don't believe the opponents are talking about business. And naturally men have enemies and opponents. If a man doesn't have enemies and opponents, he just does not exist. And I'm not afraid of my enemies.

"The Bible said I will place a table before you in front of your enemies. If you don't have an enemy, God will not place a table before you. So I need a table. So the enemies must exist" he added.

The council chairman, Ogodo-Ali assured the people of adequate protection of lives in the facility,

"There will never be any incidents of insecurity here. It is one of the most secured hotels in town.

"There is no time you come here without policemen being here. Only now. So we are not talking about security" he stressed.

it was a devastating and helpless moment for the people of isiophumini in mbeke ishieke community following the alleged demolition order recently issued by senator Peter Onyekachi nwebonyi in nwori market.

Our reporter who stormed the scene of the exercise gathered that More than seven buildings belonging to: late Mr Anthony Igboke, Mr Odeh, Mr Oshim,small boy,etc already had their roofs removed awaiting final or proper demolition.

Some of the carpenters who were busy loosing the roofs informed our correspondent that the order to remove the roofs on the structures in the market was an urgent one that caught the house owners unaware.

Speaking with our correspondent, Mr Oliver Igwe,a native of isiophumini village in mbeke ishieke community narrated the ordeal facing the owners of the buildings since the demolition order was announced.

Expressing shock over the incident, Mr Igwe said that the order is both illegal, unlawful and untimely.

He queried the possibility of an individual assuming government's responsibility without the consent or approval of both the state and local government.

He however, stated that though senator Nwebonyi had earlier requested through the villagers for the development of the market shortly after he won his senatorial election but the youths of the community in the presence of Ebonyi local government chairman Barrister Prince Chinedu Ubụrụ and the entire stakeholders from the community informed him that he (senator Nwebonyi) must make available the approval letter from both state and local government to the community before he commences any form of developmental projects in the market.

Surprisingly, they were yet to hold another stakeholder's meeting where the allegation of collection of the market revenue and sharing same to his relatives and friends by senator Nwebonyi were to be addressed before the information ordering those whose properties are in the market to quickly remove them otherwise they will loose everything to the developer who is the same person as senator Nwebonyi.

Other witnesses who spoke in anonymity for fear of attack raised concerns over the manner the senator is going about the developmental exercise insisting that his tricks is to forcefully eject the owners of the properties,build his own and become the landlord of the market.

Such act according to them is unlawful, unconstitutional and capable of tarnishing his reputation as the deputy chief whip of the 10th Senate and appeal to the government at all levels, OHA IZHI Nnodo and other relevant stakeholders to quickly intervene by compelling senator Nwebonyi to follow due process or allow the state or Ebonyi local government to develop the market.

The Senior Special Assistant to the President on Community Engagement (South East), Barr. Chioma Nweze, has met with the Minister of Defence, General Christopher Musa (rtd), to address pressing security challenges confronting the South East region.

The high-level meeting, held in Abuja, brought together members of the Presidential Community Engagement Team and senior officials of the Ministry of Defence, with discussions focused on strengthening collaboration through community-driven and non-kinetic security strategies.

At the engagement, both parties emphasised the critical role of grassroots participation in tackling insecurity, noting that sustainable peace can only be achieved through trust-based engagement between communities and security institutions.

It was gathered that the Key areas of deliberation includes; enhancing intelligence gathering through structured community engagement, improving the communication of government security interventions to local communities, relaying grassroots feedback to the Ministry, and deepening trust between citizens and security agencies.

The meeting also resolved to establish a joint working team that will coordinate regional security summits across the South East, involving local, state, and federal government stakeholders.

The summits are expected to provide a platform for citizens to openly present security concerns and contribute to practical solutions.

In addition, a direct communication channel was established between the Ministry of Defence and the Presidential Community Engagement Team to ensure sustained coordination, timely information sharing, and effective follow-up on agreed actions.

Both sides further agreed to prioritise engagement and the development of targeted programmes aimed at positively engaging youths, discouraging their involvement in activities that fuel insecurity, and addressing the underlying socio-economic factors driving unrest.

The partnership marks a renewed commitment by the Federal Government to inclusive security management and community-led peacebuilding efforts in the South East and across the country.

BREAKING: When the Prosecutor Becomes the Problem: Inside the EFCC’s Bribe Scandal and Broken Justice


The suspension of EFCC prosecutor Chime Samuel over bribery allegations has exposed a deep credibility crisis at the heart of Nigeria’s anti-corruption war. Once entrusted with some of the country’s most sensitive prosecutions, Chime is now accused of monetising justice, collecting bribes, weaponising prosecutions against certain targets, and shielding others based on financial influence.

His fall has effectively contaminated every case he handled and shattered public confidence in the integrity of the EFCC’s prosecutorial process.

Key cases linked to Chime now stand as symbols of prosecutorial excess and abuse of power. His handling of the prosecution of Yakubu Adamu, Bauchi State Commissioner for Finance, was marked by relentless aggression, multiple arraignments and sustained opposition to bail, raising serious questions as to whether the case was driven by the pursuit of justice or by ulterior motives now laid bare by his suspension.

Even more damning are developments surrounding an Abuja land dispute involving Mrs. Rebecca Omokamo Godwin-Isaac, her husband Engineer Isaac Godwin, and their company, Homadil Realty Limited. Despite evidence that the family lawfully acquired the property through registered and verifiable channels, Chime pursued them while ignoring fundamental questions surrounding the original sellers. It has since emerged that he allegedly maintained private dealings with the rival Yesufu family, the very parties contesting the land. Allegations of financial inducement now hang heavily over his decision to criminalise the buyers rather than investigate the transaction itself.

More egregious still is the reported prosecution of Rebecca Godwin-Isaac, Engineer Isaac, and Homadil Realty Limited on identical charges in two separate courts simultaneously, a clear abuse of process widely regarded as unlawful, malicious, and designed to intimidate, exhaust, and break the defendants. This was not justice; it was prosecutorial harassment backed by state power.

With Chime’s suspension now confirmed, the consequences are unavoidable. Court cases he handled have been abruptly adjourned, publicly attributed to illness but widely understood to be the fallout from his removal. This lack of transparency has only deepened public outrage and reinforced perceptions of an institutional cover-up within the EFCC.

The scandal has triggered urgent calls for the EFCC to publicly audit every case prosecuted by Chime Samuel, vacate tainted proceedings, compensate victims of prosecutorial misconduct, and confront the systemic failures that allowed one individual to abuse state authority for personal gain.

This is no longer about one corrupt prosecutor. It is about innocent citizens, Rebecca Godwin-Isaac, Engineer Isaac, their company, and others yet unknown, whose lives were destabilised by a justice system turned predatory. Until accountability is enforced and meaningful reforms are implemented, Nigeria’s anti-corruption campaign will continue to ring hollow.

Mrs Chinenye Igwe, Wife of the Ebonyi State Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, Chief Uchenna Igwe has recommended Eternal Brothers Club to all responsible men in Ebonyi and beyond due its "avid functionality and uncommon bond of oneness".

Mrs Igwe who made the recommendation on Tuesday when a high-powered delegation from the club visited the family on condolence over the untimely death of the commissioner's younger brother.

The commissioner's wife said she was awed by the galaxy of eminent personalities that are members of the club yet the simplicity, purposefulness and unbridled oneness which exists among members can sweep anyone off his or her feet.

"I never knew of the club until December last year when my husband insisted he was going to the club's end of the year gathering as its chairman.

"He came back from work tired but insisted he must attend the event and I decided to assist him by accompanying him to the event."

She noted that on reaching the venue, what she saw awed her that she insisted that her husband must be a member of the club had he not been its patron.

"I saw the timber and calibre of the society, the high, mighty and apex-ly placed, bonding, with exhibiting unbridled love and support for one another.

"This type of club exposes one to opportunities of life and I thanked my husband for making me part of such epoch event.

"I therefore recommend the club to every responsible man and urge wives to encourage their husbands to join the club."

She thanked the members for the visit noting that it has helped to soothe the pains occasioned by the unfortunate loss.

The Leader of the Delegation, Chief Chris Uchaji, thanked Mrs Igwe who stood in for her husband at that point of the visit, noting that her kind words was a grease to the image of the club.
