In a passionate appeal to local stakeholders, Hon. Egbe Chinoso Stephen, the Special Assistant to the Ishielu Local Government Chairman on Youth Mobilization, has urged the community to rally behind Mrs. Agwu Ifeoma Peace's developmental initiatives rather than divert their focus towards efforts aimed at removing her from office in pursuit of a second term.

Speaking at a press briefing held at the Ishielu Council Headquarters in Ezilo, Abakaliki, Hon. Egbe emphasized the importance of unity and support for the ongoing projects that Mrs. Agwu has championed during her tenure. He expressed concern over what he described as a campaign of calumny aimed at undermining her leadership.

"Instead of targeting personal interests, stakeholders should prioritize the greater good of Ishielu and support the commendable initiatives that Mrs. Agwu has put in place,” he stated.

Hon. Egbe underscored the significant strides made under Mrs. Agwu's leadership, noting that her administration has exceeded expectations in various sectors.

He highlighted several key achievements during her tenure, including youth empowerment programs, improved human relations, road construction, and infrastructural development initiatives that have greatly benefited the community.

"The progress we have witnessed is a testament to her dedication and commitment to the welfare of the people of Ishielu. It is imperative that we allow her to complete her term without any interruptions," Hon. Egbe concluded, calling on all stakeholders to join forces in support of Mrs. Agwu's vision for a prosperous community.

As the discourse surrounding the upcoming election intensifies, the plea from the youth leader echoes a growing sentiment among supporters of Mrs. Agwu, who believe that continuity in leadership is crucial for sustaining the development momentum in Ishielu Local Government.

The New Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC) Chairman, Mr Patrick Enyi has admonished its staff to discard the old operational order for the new one he will be introducing.

Enyi gave the charge on Friday while taking over the reins of the commission from its erstwhile Acting Chairman, Chief Nweze Offor, at the commission's headquarters in Abakaliki.

The new chairman said he and the commission's members would adhere strictly to dictates of the law in repositioning the commission for greater efficiency.

"We would provide the needed leadership while staff across the Local Government Areas (LGAs) are expected to provide the cooperation.

"You should be steady and punctual to work while applying due diligence to make us succed."

He noted that to achieve the governor's mandate and meet the people's expectations, no effort should be spared in achieving credible LGA elections in the state.

"We want to make the people's voices heard and allow them choose their leaders at the grassroots.

"Staff should be innovative and intelligent as we want to avoid unnecessary litigations over our actions.

Enyi promised to enhance staff welfare to make them perform optimally.

"Excellence will be our watchword as diligent staff would always be rewarded.

"We would organise.series of orientation to make staff attain our desired operational level."

The Former Acting Chairman of the commission, Chief Nweze Offor congratulated the new helmsman on his assumption of office and pledged to assist him in any way possible.

"Read through the submissions I made and be free to consult me for clarifications.

"I have confidence in the pedigree of the commission's new members in attaining all set goals."

Senior officials of the commission led the new chairman and members on a familiarisation tour of its facilities.

Mining site collapse - Ebonyi govt refutes negligence claims, insists firm operating legally


Following the recent collapse of a mining site in Ishiagu, Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, the Ebonyi State Government has absolved Greenfield Metals Ltd of blames, asserting that contrary to speculations in some sections of the media, the incident is suspected to have been a natural occurrence.

It would be recalled that two persons had lost their lives when a mining site collapsed in Ihietutu, Ishiagu, Ivo Local Government Area last Friday.

As a result of the incident, some media reports had hastily alleged negligence on the part of the Company, Greenfield Metals Ltd, claiming it operated illegally in the area.

During a visit to the site however, the State's Commissioner for Solid Minerals, Hon. Chidi Onyia Emmanuel who led an inspection team on Wednesday alongside federal mines officers and security agencies, debunked media reports that the site was parcelled out to illegal miners, insisting that Greenfield Metals operates with a valid mining license.

“We are here because of the unfortunate incident that claimed two lives. Mining, like many industries worldwide, comes with hazards. From our findings, this was a natural occurrence and not a result of negligence,” he said, while commiserating with the bereaved families.


He stressed that investigations were ongoing but assured that all regulatory bodies, including the Federal Ministry of Solid Minerals, police, DSS, and Civil Defence, were involved to ensure transparency. “If we find recklessness, we will act accordingly. But if it is a natural disaster, we must accept it as such,” he added.

The commissioner appealed for responsible reporting, urging the public not to worsen the grief of families with false claims. He emphasised that Ebonyi State does not encourage illegal mining and fully respects licenses issued by the federal government.


Also speaking, Mr. Henry Ahanotu, CEO of Greenfield Metals Ltd., on his part described the incident as “deeply unfortunate,” noting that safety remains a top priority at the site.

“We maintain strict health, safety and environmental standards, and our facilities are inspected regularly. This incident came as a shock, but we are already investigating the root cause to prevent a recurrence,” he said.

He further explained that the company has a cordial relationship with host communities, employing locals and supporting development projects. “We have built roads, provided scholarships, and created jobs. We see the community as partners, not outsiders,” Ahanotu added.


Others, such as community leaders who also joined the government officials to the visit also defended the company, commending its contributions to local development.

One of them, Prince Fabian Chukwu who is the Board of Trustees Chairman, Ihietutu Development Union, said, “The company has been number one in empowerment. They built the road to this site and never delayed in giving the community its due entitlements. That is why we stand by them in this unfortunate incident.”

Correspondents who visited the site observed that Greenfield Metals has since suspended operations at the site pending the outcome of investigations, while pledging continued support to the victims’ families.

The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Development, Mrs. Felicia Nwamkpuma, has described as false, some media reports that she has been in police detention since Monday this week over alleged sale of a baby for N25 million.

A 29 year old woman in the state, Susan Nweze and her family had alleged that her new born baby was sold for N25milion by the state police command in collaboration with some other security agencies and the state Ministry of Women Affairs after the baby was born.

Susan's family petitioned the force zonal headquarters of the police in Enugu and the Assistant Inspector General of Police in the zone invited the parties mentioned in the petition including the Nwamkpuma who was mandated to come with the baby.

The Commissioner said she was immediately asked to go back with the baby by the AIG after the presentation on Tuesday this week she went for the invitation.

She said the ministry was keeping custody of the said baby boy in line with the child right that empowers it to do so for vulnerable child and urged the public to disregard the media reports alleging she has been in detention since Monday this week.

Speaking to reporters on Thursday, she said The baby is with the Ministry of Women Affairs and Ministry of Women Affairs has the statutory rights to ensure that children who are vulnerable like this case are protected and kept safe

"On this matter, someone petitioned AIG Enugu and investigation into the matter is still ongoing. We have been invited to show the baby to show that this baby is with us.

"So, we have taken the baby to Enugu and AIG has seen the baby. We came back with the baby. We were invited to come to Enugu on that Tuesday with the baby and returned back with the baby on that same Tuesday being 19th August.

"We took the baby from the police to Enugu because they had already given us a handover note. We took the baby from them and we have to wait for the AIG to conclude his investigation.

"I have been in my office working, I was never arrested. I got an invitation from the police AIG. I got the letter on the 14th of August that they will like to see that baby. They told me to come with that baby and on Tuesday, we went to see the AIG with the baby and we were told to go back that same day after seeing the baby.

"We are not trying to cover anybody on this matter or pretend that the baby is not with us and we are saying the baby is with us. The baby is with us, no baby was sold, the ministry did not conspire neither did we in any agree with anybody to sell any baby and the word "sell" is against the child and nature. Babies are not sold.

"So, no baby was sold. The baby is under the Ministry of Women Affairs in a home where the baby is protected and we can't disclose the name of the home for security reasons.

"Before the police came with a letter, we were informed that a couple were requesting for this particular baby, that the mother of the baby said she is financially and emotionally to care for the baby. They said a lot of things in the letter but the Ministry don't just rely on a consent letter from the mother or any body.

"We said okay, until we see the person that wrote that letter, then we can now know the next line of action. The baby was never adopted because when you talk about adoption, it's a legal term that can be done by the court but when a child is brought to us depending on the vulnerability of the child, the first thing we do is to take custody of this child. We take some of them to hospital first so that the child will receive medical care or some, we take them straight to motherless babies home".

The Nigerian Institution of Builders in Facilities Management (NIBIFM) has called for collective approach of structural engineers, construction consultants, architects, and quantity surveyors in construction projects to end building collapse in the country.

They further emphasising the need for qualified professionals and adherence to building codes while engaging in construction processes.

Bldr Akpatre Ndaw, National Chairman of NIBIFM made the call at the Builders Fourth Facilities Managers (FM) Conference in Abakaliki on Tuesday.

Our Correspondent reports that the 2025 conference was tagged, "The Evolution of Facilities Management in Nigeria: Stakeholders Role".

"To end building collapse, we must avoid the use of unqualified contractors and substandard materials," he advised.

On the conference, the Chairman said that the programme was to reawake the consciousness of the citizens on the need for proper facilities management and maintenance.

"When a structure is put in place, there must be regular management and maintenance for it to stand," he said

Ndaw, therefore noted that the evolution of Facilities management (FM) in Nigeria has transformed significantly, driven by various factors such as urbanization, technological advancements, and changing workplacedyna-mics.

"The Nigerian Facilities Management market is expected to grow at a Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) of 12% from 2020 to 2025, driven by increasing demand for outsourced FM services.

"The market size is projected to reach ₦1.3 trillion by 2025, up from ₦700billion in 2020," he added.

"The industry is adopting advanced technologies, including building information modeling (BIM) and Internet of Things (IoT) devices, to enhance operational efficiency. 75% of Nigerian organizations plan to invest in FM technology.

"The government, professional bodies and facilities managers plays a crucial role in creating an enabling environment for FM through policies, regulations, and infrastructural development," Ndaw stated.

Also speaking, Bldr Alderton Ewan, President, Nigeria Institute of Building (NIOB) said that the theme for the 2025 NIBIFM conference was both timely and critical as they navigate within the Nigeria's involving built environment.

"In the last two decades, the concept of Facility Management in Nigeria has grown from being an emerging discipline to becoming an indispensable component of the life cycle of buildings and infrastructure.

"For Nigeria to experience a true Facility Management revolution, stakeholders must act decisively and collaboratively, including the government and Regulatory authorities in construction processes," Ewa advised.

While Pa Emmanuel Chiagorom from Umuovum Ulakwo aged 73 years, thank God for the journey so far pointing out that "many that started life with him were gone".

Speaking also, Mrs Rose Onyemekam from Nwangele Local Government Area of Imo State and aged 71, urged the youths to "live a life of sacrifice, forgiveness and tolerance."

Meanwhile Princess Nympha Chukwudi -Okere (Nee Oparaochaekwe, (Ada Onyeze) hinted that another phase of the programme would be held in December this year the occasion which is also ", our Annual Inter denominational Christmas Carol of 9 lesson which is concluded by sharing of Food and Christmas gifts" she emphasized.

The organiser of the 20,000 man-march for Governor Francis Nwifuru, Dr Innocent Unah has said that the rally was to appreciate the governor for redefining empowerment and making Ebonyi people feel the real taste of governance.

Unah gave the assertion while speaking on the rally aimed at appreciatitng the governor and rallying support for him to continue in office.

The grassroot mobiiser said the level of human empowerment witnessed in Nwifuru's government is unprecedented in the annals of the state.

"We are talking of real empowerment where the backlog of pension and gratuities owed retirees in the state since its creation in 1996 have been offset.

"I was moved to the marrow on seeing a retirees crying that Nwifuru has turned his life around as he was being owed those entitlements since 2004 when he retired."

Unah highlighted that over 300 Ebonyi indigenes are presently on scholarship abroad and major universities across the country courtesy the governor's untiring resolve to enhance education in the state.

"This is a life time opportunity to change the narratives of the beneficiaries and grateful secure the educational future of the state.

"The beneficiaries would become proficient professionals in their various fields of endeavour while the state will receive massive educational impetus with their highly -horned skills and expertise."

He noted that citizens of the state have been empowered stupendously by the governor with funds and tools to start various businesses with the vulnerable receiving due attention.

"Tremendous achievements has been recorded in the areas of agriculture, health, education, sports, mineral resources,.commerce among other sectors and we organised the rally to highlight these achievements."

He noted that the rally also geared towards galvanising Oshiri people to ensure that they are well prepared to demonstrate their support for Nwifuru's government.

"We have to correct what happened during the last general elections where the governor and his party, the All Progressives Congress (APC) did not get the quantum of support they were supposed to get.

"You know that a son of Onicha Local Government Area contested the election and this absolutely made things difficult.

"At that point, little was.nown about the leadership qualities of Nwifuru but presently, the people know better and are saying that they could had voted otherwise then."

Unah noted it was time the people showed their solidarity to the governor to avoid the scenario of 2023.

"That is why we are commencing the Mobilisation presently and conscientalise the Nwifuru philosophy into the people.

Mrs Jane Okoro, a native of Oshiri who participated in the rally said the governor through his wife, has enhanced the wellbeing of women and deserves support to continue in office.

POLYCARP SOLA - ABAKALIKI

Prince Victor Nwenyi Chibuoyi, the state commander of the neighbourhood watch in Ebonyi, has called for a demonstration of love and unity among brothers and neighbours in the state amidst the celebration of the new yam festival in the Izzi clan, also referred to as the Ojiji festival.


Nwenyi stated while interacting with newsmen in Abakaliki, the state capital, that the entire essence of the "Ojiji festival" is to share love with one another and to showcase oneness, peace and harmony without differences between the rich and the poor, signifying unity.


"In our culture, we call it 'Ojiji nwanyi'. It is a day we use to share love, show love to one another, and think of your neighbours. The poor usually present gifts to the rich, and the rich will also give to the poor; there's a sign of love and unity." Nwenyi said.



Explaining further, Nwenyi noted that it is not mandatory for only the rich to show love to the poor, which is against the tradition, but maintained that it's a mutual appreciation which is expected from everyone in the Izzi clan as a symbol of oneness.



"It is not a must that because a person is the richest in the society that he should do the Ojiji for the poorest; a poor woman in the village can come with a small piece of pounded yam with beniseed soup to give to a rich man, simply to show love. There may not be meat in the soup, but it is just to show love." He said.



The commander, in his usual way of ensuring peaceful coexistence among his people, equally urged them to celebrate peacefully and extend the love to others who are not their clan as a way of promoting the already existing peace in the state.



"That is our culture; it is a day marked for love and unity and for us to celebrate our new yam, and I wish to tell my people out there to extend the love to our neighbours, our friends, and well-wishers; we should all enjoy without fighting." He added.

The 1st Vice Chairman of the people's Democratic party PDP, Ebonyi Central Zone, Hon. Chief. Kevin Tobias Chukwu, has expressed optimism that the party will bounce back stronger come 2027 election.

Chukwu, who is a member of PDP National zoning Committee disclosed this shortly after his inauguration as a member of the Zoning Committee at the party's national Secretariat Abuja. He noted that zoning is a foundation for equity, fairness, political stability and internal democracy to thrive.


He said:
"Yesterday, I had the honour of being inaugurated into the PDP National Zoning Committee at the PDP National Secretariat, Abuja. This responsibility comes at a critical time for our party, our state, and our country.

"This is a strategic milestone for our party. The zoning committee is the foundation upon which internal equity, fairness, and political stability are built. By ensuring that our zoning reflects justice and inclusivity, we are setting the stage for a united front ahead of 2027.

"Absolutely. I am confident that the PDP will bounce back stronger in 2027. Our resilience lies in our grassroots structures, our capacity to listen to the people, and our commitment to providing credible alternatives to the present administration. The future belongs to the disciplined, the consistent, and the united. BRIGADIER GEN. OMOKE BAGS NIGERIA NATIONAL YOUTH MERIT AWARD OF EXCELLENCE

Brigadier General Igwe Patrick Omoke has been conferred with the Nigeria National Youth Merit Award of Excellence by the Nigeria Youth Organisation (NYO).

The award investiture was the highpoint of activities of the NYO in comermoration of the 2025 International Youth Day Celebration Dinner of the NYO held at the Barcelona Hotels International, Abuja.

Speaking at the programmme# the National Executive President of the NYO, Comrade Okorie C. Okorie revealed that Brigadier General Omoke was selected for the honour in recognition of his meritorious security service in the Security sector as well as his sterling efforts in the area of youth development in Nigeria.

In a separate remarks, the Senior Special Assistant to the President on Special Needs and Equal Opportunities Hon. Mohammed Abba Isa, the NUJ Chairman FCT Council Comrade Grace Ike and others extolled the bravery of General Omoke describing him as a patriot and dedicated officer who has given all in thr service of the fatherland.

Reading the Citation of the Special Awardee, Director of Public Affairs, Nigeria Youth Organisation Barr Emmanuel Umahi Ekwe said "Brigadier General Igwe Patrick Omoke is one of the most decicated and educated Nigerianmilitary officer, yet he remains a humble man who listens at any time he is called upon."

In response, Gen. Omoke expressed gratitude to the NYO for finding him worthy of the honour and charged the youths to remain focused on achieving their dreams through hard work, noting that "if I can do it# you too can do it."

The well attended ceremony was graced by the leadership of the NYO from the 36 states of the Federation and the FCT, others institutions represented at the event include the Federal Ministry of Foreign Affairs, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency among many others.

Gen. Umoke is the first recipient of the NYO National Merit Award in the last 10 years.

POLYCARP SOLA- ABAKALIKI


Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has compensated the victims of the February 3rd herders/farmers clash in Nkalaha Community, Ishielu Local Government Area of the state, consisting of the farmers and members of the Miyetti Allah group, to initiate a lasting peace in the area.

The event, which was held at the Ishielu local government council headquarters, witnessed a scenario where families were given monies worth millions of Naira to cushion the loss of their loved ones and business owners were given capital to resume their businesses.

The governor, who was represented at the event by his deputy, Princess Patricia Obila, assured members of the community of the government's readiness to address some of the infrastructural deficits in the area and pleaded with the people to embrace peace and shun anything that could trigger crises in the area.

"With a heavy heart, I reflect on the tragic incident that happened on February 2 in Nkalaha. The loss of lives and properties was devastating, and we must live together as one family to ensure it never happens again,” Obila said.

The breakdown of the compensation shows that 18 bereaved families received ₦2 million each (₦36 million), while owners of 41 destroyed buildings got ₦1 million each (₦41 million). Four destroyed motorcycles were valued at ₦1 million each (₦4 million), while victims who lost cash during the attack were refunded a total of ₦816,000.

The Fulani community in the area also received ₦20 million for cows lost during the attack.

She commended stakeholders, traditional rulers, youth leaders, and security agencies for their efforts in restoring peace, assuring that the state would not abandon Nkalaha.

The Deputy Governor also announced that victims not captured in the first phase would be considered in subsequent rounds of assistance.

On her part, Mrs Peace Ifeoma Agwu, the Executive Chairman of Ishielu LGA, described the governor’s intervention as “historic” for the people of Nkalaha. She said the attack, carried out by yet-to-be-identified gunmen, had left deep scars on the community, but swift government action helped avert further escalation.

“Not all leaders would show such compassion. His Excellency has restored permanent peace in Nkalaha, and our people have returned to their farms and businesses,” Agwu said.

Speaking, the National Deputy Director General of MACBAN, Sidiqi Gidado, said that about 140 cows were killed during the crisis and commended the State Governor for the compensation paid to its members.

“People infiltrate some of our people and the indigenes, and when they cause havoc in the community, it will be tagged as a farmers’ and herders’ crisis, which it is not. The cattle dealers and the farmers are the vulnerable people whosebusiness is in the forest,” he added.

Gidado said that the community has set up a local vigilante and pledged that MACBAN will work with the government and the community to ensure that peace is sustained.

The Town Union President of Nkalaha Community, Mr Eze Donatus NnajiOgo, said, "We're here today, and we're happy with what the government is doing. On behalf of the Nkalaha community, we are praying for the governor."

He, however, expressed regret that out of the 18 persons killed in the attack, 10 were still in the mortuary while 8 had been buried, and urged the State Government to put modalities in place to ensure the burial of those still in the mortuary.

He further lamented that the community can no longer be accessed because of bad roads and called on the government to extend its infrastructure programmes to the community.

As the world celebrates International Youth Day today, the 2023 Ebonyi PDP governorship candidate, Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii has issued a passionate statement lamenting the harsh socio-economic realities confronting Ebonyi youth, saying “the time for empty promises is over.”

The global theme for this year’s celebration — “Local Youth Actions for the SDGs and Beyond” — sparked Dr. Odii’s message, where he accused the current leadership of Ebonyi State of failing to create an enabling environment for young people to thrive.

> “The dreams of our youth are being crushed, not because they lack talent, but because the system has failed them,” Odii stated.

According to him, Ebonyi youth are confronted by alarming poverty rates, massive unemployment, and systemic neglect. He cited recent statistics showing that over 79% of Ebonyians live below the poverty line, with 78% trapped in multi-dimensional poverty, lacking access to clean water, education, healthcare, housing, and nutrition.

He also revealed that Ebonyi ranks 32nd out of 36 states in the Ease of Doing Business Index, making it the lowest-performing state in the Southeast. Even more worrying, Odii noted that no foreign investment has been recorded in the state from 2023 till date — a sharp contrast to neighbouring states that have secured multi-million-dollar industrial deals.

Odii referred to the 2024 Subnational Audit Efficacy Index, where Ebonyi ranked 34th, scoring just 7%, which he described as a red flag for transparency and governance.

> “These statistics are not just numbers — they represent shattered dreams and wasted potential,” he said.

He highlighted the resilience of Ebonyi youth who, despite harsh conditions, continue to innovate in tech, fashion, sports, and entertainment. However, he warned that such brilliance should not continue without meaningful government support.

Odii urged young people in Ebonyi to rise beyond political rhetoric and take collective action toward leadership that uplifts and empowers rather than one that, in his words, “weaponizes poverty.”

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) Ebonyi state council has affirmed the safety and freedom of the press in the state, saying that journalists enjoy freedom to practise without fear of harassment and intimidation, and commending Governor Francis Nwifuru for creating the enabling environment.

This came following the trend in the state, particularly concerning the suspension of the acting general manager of Legacy FM, Mr Godfrey Chikwere, by his employer due to misconduct and has generated reactions from quarters suggesting that the freedom of the press is threatened.

In a press release dished out by the State Council Chairman, Comrade Samson Nwafor described the assertion as false and misleading, noting that no journalist has suffered attack in the state while performing their constitutional duties.

The statement, titled “Ebonyi Remains The Safest State For Journalists In Nigeria”, further affirmed a cordial relationship between the government and journalists in accordance with constitutional practice and warned individuals parading as “journalists” and spreading rumours to desist from such acts.

“The attention of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Ebonyi State Council, has been drawn to the activities of some clout-chasing individuals who go about giving false narratives in sections of the media suggesting that press freedom is under threat in Ebonyi State following the suspension of the acting general manager of Legacy FM, Mr Odoh Godfrey Chikwere, by his employer.

“The Council wishes to state as follows:

“1. That journalists working in Ebonyi State are enjoying the best of press freedom in the country.

The Arewa community development groups, Youth movement and president of Arewa consultative youth movement have taken legal action against Dapo Segun, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of NNPC Limited who was former nnpcl evp downstream, praying for his sack, arrest, prosecution over role in the failure of the refinery rehabilitation, OVH NNPCL Retail acquisition deal.

This is just as the youths from 19 northern states have asked President Bola Tinubu, the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and the Department of State Services(DSS), to stop shielding Segun, and harassing northerners over refinery rehabilitation and OVH and bring segun who presided over the project as vice president of downstream to face the law.

The Arewa Youths in the court papers filed before the Federal High Court Kaduna by Ahmed Yusuf, Esq applied for the issuance of an Order of Mandamus to inter-alia cause the EFCC to probe, arrest and prosecute the NNPCL CFO while he resigns.

The suit no FHC/KD/CS/101/2025 has Arewa Consultative Youth Movement President, Arewa community for empowerment and development as complainants with Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) and Dapo Segun, the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) as first and second respondents

The exparte motion sighted by journalists is praying the court to make: "(i) A DECLARATION that the failure by the 1st Respondent to investigate the fraudulent conduct or role of the 2nd Respondent, as then Executive Vice President Downstream and now Chief Financial Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, in connection with the acquisition of the OVH Energy by the NNPCL and the rehabilitation of the Port-Harcourt and Warri Refineries, amounts to a gross violation of its Statutory duties.


"(ii) AN ORDER compelling the 1st Respondent to within 7 days from the service of the Order of this Court on it, commence a thorough and dispassionate investigation of the fraudulent conduct or role of the 2nd Respondent, as then Executive Vice President Downstream and now Chief Financial Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, in connection with the acquisition of the OVH Energy by the NNPCL and rehabilitation of the Port-Harcourt and Warri Refineries and to publish the Report of its investigation to the public within 14 days of its conclusion.


"(iii) AN ORDER that where the Report of the 1st Respondent’s investigation discloses commission of any offence, the 1st Respondent shall FORTWITH arrest and prosecute the 2nd Respondent (Dapo Segun) for the economic and financials offences relating to the acquisition of OVH Energy by the NNPCL and rehabilitation of the Port-Harcourt and Warri Refineries.


"AN INTERIM ORDER OF COURT directing the 2nd Respondent (Dapo Segun) to forthwith step aside as the Chief Financial Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited and refrain from holding himself out as the Chief Financial Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited and desist from the performance of any duty pertaining thereto, tampering with or altering any documents or records, material to the investigation into his conduct and/or role in the acquisition of the of OVH Energy by the NNPCL and rehabilitation of the Port-Harcourt and Warri Refineries, pending the hearing and determination of the Substantive Motion on Notice for Judicial Review.


"AN ORDER OF COURT granting Leave to the Applicants to serve the Substantive Motion on Notice for Judicial Review and any other process(es) in this Suit upon the 2nd Respondent by delivering same to the Legal Department of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited at its head office at Central Business District, Abuja.

The Voice of Disability Initiative (VDI), a non-governmental organisation, has appealed to the Ebonyi government to sign the Disability Rights Act in the state.

VDI’s Executive Director, Catherine Edeh, made the appeal on Friday in a press conference in Abakaliki.

Our correspondent recalls that the Ebonyi House of Assembly had on March 2025, made accelerated passage of the bill and sent to Gov Francis Nwifuru for an assent.

Edeh, represented by her Communication Manager, Miss Mary Joseph maintained that the bill, when signed into law would go a long way in protecting the rights of the persons with disabilities in the state.

The Executive Director also called for the need for inclusive governance, especially for women and girls with disabilities.

According to her, there is a critical need for the Governor to assent to the Disability Right Law as well as establishing the State Commission for Persons with Disabilities.

"Across Nigeria and in Ebonyi State, women and girls with disabilities face systemic exclusion in healthcare, education, employment, and decision-making.

"Their vulnerability to gender-based violence, discrimination, and lack of access to services remains a major concern.

"We have strong, capable women with disabilities in Ebonyi State, who are ready to contribute meaningfully, but they need the legal and institutional framework to protect their rights and support their inclusion.

"Women and girls with disabilities face double discrimination — as women, and as persons with disabilities.

"Many are excluded from health services, education, livelihood opportunities, and decision-making processes.

"Sexual and gender-based violence disproportionately affects women with disabilities, yet accessible health services and justice mechanisms remain limited," she added.

Also speaking, Miss Ezinne Ndumnego, Programme Officer of the VDI said, there was need to let the voice of the persons with disabilities, especially the women be heard.

"We call on Governor of Ebonyi State, to immediately assent to the Disability Right Law and establish the Commission for Persons with Disabilities without delay.

"We call on ministries, civil society, and media to join us in advocating for the rights, dignity, and inclusion of women and girls with disabilities," Ndumnego said.

Mr Christopher Okorie, Coordinator, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC), Ebonyi office expressed worry over the delay on signing the Disability Right Law in the state.

Okorie urged the government at all level to prioritise the wellbeing of persons with disabilities

"The people with disabilities only asking for equality and opportunity to contribute their quota to nation building.

"Its necessary to give prioritise to their wellbeing. Provide facilities for them to be a partaker of national development and policy making," the Coordinator added.

Scandal: Court fixed Oct 30 for hearing on suit seeking for Nnpcl Cfo Segun’s sack, prosecution


The Federal High Court in Abuja presided over by Justice Omotosho has fixed October 30, 2025, for the final hearing of the suit seeking the sack, investigation and prosecution of the former nnpcl executive vice president downstream who is currently Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Dapo Segun, over the alleged financial fraud in the N5 trillion refinery rehabilitation scandal and the OVH Energy acquisition deal that happened under his tenure as the man in charge of downstream.


The civil society group Rights for All International, which filed the suit, is asking the court to compel the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to probe Segun’s role in the failed rehabilitation of the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries, as well as the NNPCL’s takeover of OVH Energy. The group alleges that the EFCC’s refusal to investigate Segun amounts to a dereliction of duty and an abuse of power.

Among the demands is an order of mandamus directing the EFCC to immediately commence an investigation into Segun’s conduct and to publish its findings within 14 days of concluding the probe.

The group has also called on President Bola Tinubu to suspend Segun from office to prevent possible interference with the investigation.

The case has sparked public interest due to the huge sums involved in the refinery projects, which have remained non-functional despite massive government spending.

It is believed by a cross-section of Nigerians that the outcome of this suit would have major implications for accountability in Nigeria’s oil sector.

The matter which came up on Friday was adjourned for final hearing by the presiding Judge who gave a matching order for all parties to get ready on 30th for final hearing of the suit which will help in cleansing the rot that destroyed the refinery efforts during the tenure of dapo segun as evp downstream.

The National Pension Commission (PenCom) has organised a workshop to sensitise workers in Ebonyi State on the need to adopt the contributory pension scheme as provided by the Pension Reform Act of 2014 (PRA 2014).

According to the commission, the sensitisation exercise would enlighten members of the organised labour to fill up the knowledge gap on the general workings of the scheme, with the aim of imparting knowledge as well as the benefits of the CPS to the state.

The Director General of the commission, Ms Omolola Oloworaran, said the Contributory Pension Scheme would benefit state governments by eliminating the pension burden placed on them by the old scheme while also ensuring that workers get their retirement benefits as and when due.

She maintained that states implementing the CPS across the country are on the right path to a glorious future without pension liabilities, economic development and assured financial security for workers and retirees.

"The CPS offers states a unique opportunity to access accumulated pension funds for infrastructural development. Furthermore, CPS offers the potential of pension funds to be a force for economic development, particularly through infrastructure investments.

"Examples of five states – Lagos, Niger, Osun, Ekiti, and Delta – that have successfully issued state bonds, which were subscribed with pension funds. These bonds, in turn, have been used to finance critical infrastructure projects, such as the Lekki-Ikoyi Bridge in Lagos".

Oloworaran added that the importance of an enactment that services to consolidate the achievements of the Contributory Pension Scheme at the state level cannot be overemphasised.

"The Commission is committed to ensuring that all retirees, from both the public and private sectors, at the state and national level receive their retirement benefits as and when due.

"Our focus will be to constructively engage Ebonyi State in a sustainable manner and work towards seamless implementation of CPS retirees. As part of our strategy towards pension reforms in a greater number of states, PenCom encourages some flexibility in the adoption of contributory pension arrangements in a manner that suits each state." She said.

However, Dr Usioma Arunneya, the permanent secretary of establishment, pension and management services, who represented the state head of service, affirmed that hitherto, the state had embarked on the contributory pension scheme but failed because it was not feasible for the state.

She said the adoption of the scheme would be a decision of the government in agreement with the workers, saying that the current government has prioritised the welfare of workers and would always seek to protect their interests.

In their reactions, the chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress Ebonyi state chapter, Professor Ogugua Egwu, and his Trade Union Congress counterpart (TUC), Comrade Igboji Chidi, maintained neutrality over the scheme, saying that it is the members, who are the workers, that would decide on the CPS before it would be adopted.

"We cannot say categorically that the contributory pension scheme is perfect; all we need to do as Nigerian workers is to sit down and weigh the pros and cons – the advantages and disadvantages – and see which is more, the advantage or the disadvantage, and then we can take a decision as a people together." They stated.

Instead, the youths from 19 northern states urned President Tinubu ensure the the suspension or removal and persecution of Segun while his involvement in the refinery rehabilitation and NNPCL’s acquisition of OVH Energy and deals should be thoroughly probed.


They noted that the present NNPCL’s CFO who served as the
Executive Vice President, Downstream in the previous management of the national oil company can not be excluded from the probe of the refinery rehabilitation and OVH Energy scam while northerners are hunted.


The Arewa Youths bemoaned the recently alleged detention of the former Chief Finance Officer of the NNPC Limited, Umar Ajiya Isa by the EFCC over involvement in the $7.2 billion refinery rehabilitation fraud while Segun is spared and enjoying his new office akin to reward for crimes.


"Though Isa had said he rather submitted himself to the anti-graft agency and not arrested, an official of EFCC reportedly confirmed that the commission's operatives had arrested him in connection with an alleged $7.2bn fraud related to the rehabilitation of the Kaduna, Warri, and Port Harcourt refineries.



"Also, EFCC reportedly arrested the former Managing Director of the Warri Refinery, Jimoh Olasunkanmi. However, the commission turned blind eye to the major role played by Segun who as the Executive Vice President for the downstream, was directly responsible for refinery operations, shipping, trading, and treasury.


"In furtherance of the witch-hunting of the northerners, EFCC listed the following officials in the probe. They include: the former Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO), Mele Kyari; the former Managing Director of the Port Harcourt Refining Company Limited (PHRC), Ibrahim Onoja; and the former Managing Director of Kaduna Refining and Petrochemical Company (KRPC), Mustafa Sugungun.


"Others are former Group Managing Director of NNPC, Abubakar Yar’Adua; a former NNPC group executive director, finance & services; Isiaka Abdulrazak; a former Chief Financial Officer NNPC Limited, Umar Ajiya; the former Managing Director of the PHRC, Dikko Ahmed.



"This is a clear indication that Segun who now oversee the financial affairs of the NNPCL is being shielded by the EFCC and other powers that be despite being at the centre of these controversies. We therefore call for his immediate suspension, arrest and probe concerning these frauds."

Arewa Youths have called for the sack and prosecution of the Chief Financial Officer (CFO) of NNPC Limited, Dapo Segun over his involvement in the country's refinery rehabilitation mismanagement and NNPCL’s acquisition of OVH Energy failure.


According to them, Segun who served as the Executive Vice President, Downstream in the NNPCL was deeply involved in the refinery rehabilitation and the OVH scandal, hence he should be caused to resign or outrightly removed and prosecuted as investigations into those issues ensue.



In a statement in Abuja, the Arewa Youths said the recent resolve of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to probe the alleged abuse of office and misappropriation of funds by former senior officials of NNPCL which included those connected with refinery rehabilitation but excluding the then Executive Vice President, Downstream.



"We are aware that recently EFCC had in a letter addressed to the Group Chief Executive Officer, NNPCL formally requested documents related to an ongoing probe. The letter, titled “Investigation Activities Request for Information”, referenced number CR:3000/EFCC/ABJ/HQ/SDC.2/NNPC/VOL.1/698, stated:


“The Commission said is investigating a case of Abuse of Office and Misappropriation of Funds in which the under-listed officials of NNPCL featured. It listed the 14 individuals involved in the investigation, as: Abubakar Lawal Yar’Adua, Mele Kolo Kyari, Isiaka Abdulrazak, Umar Ajiya, Dikko Ahmed, Ibrahim Onoja, amongst others.


"We are however shocked to the marrow that Segun's name was conspicuously missing from the EFCC’s list of individuals under the probe. As Executive Vice President for the downstream, he was directly responsible for refinery operations, shipping, trading, and treasury which areas now under investigation.



"As a result of his position in the last NNPCL's management, the current CFO is supposed to be prominently featured in the investigation because he presided over the departments currently under scrutiny and managed transactions that called for the investigation.


"Segun was equally at the helms of NNPCL’s acquisition of OVH Energy in which the whooping sum of $325.09 million (N140.559 billion) was paid but full take over remains a subject of controversy still under investigation in the House of Representatives.

The human right lawyers led by respected constitutional lawyer Okere Kingdom condemned the inability or lopsided investigation of the refinery rehabilitation that gulped over 5 trillion with refinery under lock and key without the man who was in charge of the downstream operations of nnpcl made to face the law for his failure and lack of competence that led to the mismanagement of the refinery project and the controversy surrounding the N140 billion ovh nnpcl retail deal that have been hanging with multiple lapses, demanding that the court order the EFCC to immediately apprehend dapo segun the former evp downstream of nnpcl who is now the chief financial officer and audit his years of reign of failures while urging the president to remove dapo segun to AVIOD him using his current position as nnpcl chief financial to tamper with evidence that are crucial.

The human right lawyers who dragged dapo, efcc before a Federal high court in Abuja are alleging selective investigation of fraud relating to the repair of Refineries by the Nigeria National Petroleum Company Ltd, (NNPCL) which will ruin the integrity of the process if not immediately fixed.

In the suit, which was brought ex-parte, the group, Kingdom Human Rights Foundation International listed the EFCC and Dapo Segun, the Chief Financial Officer of the company as defendants.

Segun was also accused of allegedly presiding over the nnpcl downstream section as evp then before his elevation to cfo during which the controversial deal over the purchase of OVH Energy, an energy services company was sealed.

Reliefs sought by the group include "A declaration that the failure by the EFCC to investigate the fraudulent conduct or role of the 2nd Respondent, as the Chief Financial Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, in connection with the acquisition of the of OVH Energy by the NNPCL and rehabilitation of the Port-Harcourt and Warri Refineries, amounts to a refusal/failure of its statutory and/or public duty and therefore constitutes an abuse of powers, ultra vires and bad faith.

It also asked the court for "an order of mandamus directing and compelling the 1st Respondent by its staff, officers, privies, servants or otherwise howsoever described to within 7 days commence investigation of the fraudulent conduct or role of the 2nd Respondent, as the Chief Financial Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited, in connection with the acquisition of the of OVH Energy by the NNPCL and rehabilitation of the Port-Harcourt and Warri Refineries and to publish the Report of the Investigation within 14 days of its conclusion.

Third relief sought by the human right group was for "an order of mandamus directing and compelling the 1st Respondent by its staff, officers, privies, servants or otherwise howsoever described, where the Report of the Investigation discloses commission of any office, to fortwith arrest and prosecute the 2nd Respondent (Dapo Segun) for the economic and financials offences relating to the acquisition of the of OVH Energy by the NNPCL and rehabilitation of the Port-Harcourt and Warri Refineries.

Further, the group is asking for "An interim order of court directing the 2nd Respondent (Dapo Segun) to forthwith step aside as the Chief Financial Officer of the Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited and cease the performance of any duty pertaining thereto, tampering with or altering any documents or records material to the investigation into his conduct and/or role in the acquisition of the of OVH Energy by the NNPCL and rehabilitation of the Port-Harcourt and Warri Refineries, pending the hearing and determination of the Substantive Motion on Notice for Judicial Review."

Meanwhile, another civil society group, Center for Oil and Gas Transparency and Reform, has in a series of videos, raises the alarm over alleged corrupt practices in the repair of Port Harcourt amd Warri Refineries by officials of the NNPCL.

The lawyers led by Barr. Ahmed Yusuf and okere kingdom also want forensic audit and EFCC probe of his tenure, over his role in failed refinery, OVH deals, urging President Bola Tinubu wants to sack him.

The lawyers have stormed the Federal High Court seeking for an order of Court to suspend the NNPCL CFO, the suit fhc/abj/1580/2025 was filled today at the federal high court by kingdom human right group

The suit is seeking an order for forensic investigation of the OVH refinery deals and the tenure of Dapo.

It is also seeking for an order to stop Dapo's continuous stay as CFO to avoid compromise of documents pending the conclusion of investigation.

The lawyers in a statement issued in Abuja said, "We are seeking for an order of Court to suspend the NNPCL CFO. The suit is seeking an order for forensic investigation of the OVH refinery deals and the tenure of Dapo. It is also seeking for an order to stop his continuous stay as CFO to avoid compromise of documents pending the conclusion of investigation.

"The man who was EVP Downstream then, chief financial officer now. The man who caused crisis between everyone in the board. this is the man who was a head of treasury in NNPC during the refinery rehabilitation.

"Later became EVP Downstream that was still in charge of the refinery rehabilitation, going to the refinery everyday precided over that process including the award of the jobs. This same man again became chief financial officer making payment. Now the refinery project has failed.

"Also the EVP during the NNPC acquisition of OVH which has been no benefit today at NNPC. This same man is still in office as chief financial officer instead of being sacked.

"We call on President Bola Tinubu to do.the needful by sacking him and bringing on board someone more competent."

The Civil Society Organisation Network on Migration and Development (CSOnetMADE) in collaboration with other partners have launched campaign to raise awareness against human trafficking in the state.

The event which took place on Wednesday at Ahia ofuru community market in Abakaliki to ensure "human trafficking free state".

The National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) in collaboration with State Taskforce on Human Trafficking (ESTHT) organised a mass sensitisation exercise in commemoration of 2025 World Day against Human Trafficking with theme: "Human Trafficking is Organised Crime - End the Exploitation".

Mrs Goodness Mbaja, State Coordinator of the network stated that awareness were inspired and motivated by collaborative efforts to do more on eradication of the practice in the state.

Mbaja also Member of Anti Human Trafficking Taskforce in the state, added that the commitment to action should be collective call to all stakeholders to ensure safety of everyone.

The coordinator revealed the driving force of the practice to include poverty, gender based violence and warning signs of communal crisis which exposes vulnerable people.

She urged governments to ensure poverty is alleviated, good governance and wellbeing of people promoted.

"We are enjoying robust collaboration with law enforcement agencies in the state and call for more synergy to tackle the practice," Mbaja noted

The Member, Pan-African Catholic Theology and Pastoral Network (PACTPAN) Rev Sister Georgina Pemii, said its actively involved in raising awareness against human trafficking and other rights violation.

Pemii, also be the Trinitarian Missionary of Merciful Love Congregation said that the PACTPAN little children are actively engaged in the campaign because they have relatives who were victims of human trafficking.

"We are saying no to the act because its destroyes the society and the state is no-longer place to get children for trafficking, slavery and domestic helps," she warned.

Loretta Nwafor, the State Coordinator, Network Against Child Trafficking Abuse and Labour, state chapter, while addressing labourers, commercial motorcycle operators and traders at Ahia Ofuru community market, stated that grassroots efforts could address the root causes of trafficking, build resilience and prevention.

In her remarks, Mrs Anne Nwabugwu NAPTIP official of the state command, disclosed that the agency is not relenting its efforts to end the practice in the state.

Another Partner, Sister Susan Ezeh, Coordinator, Nigeria Conference of Women Region Against Human Trafficking said it embarked on educating the community to be actively involved in combating human trafficking.

A registered socio-cultural organization, whose mission it is to bring unity and development to the people of Amasiri, in Afikpo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, has stressed that AUF remains a rallying point for the achievement of its people's corporate goals, geared towards a greater Amasiri Community.

Established in 2015, AUF, added that it has put modalities in place for the celebration of its 10 years of existence, which has been occasioned by records of unprecedented achievements.

Briefing newsmen in Abakaliki, on the activities lined up to mark the group's success story, the Chief Administrator of AUF, Comrade Dandy Otu, explained that: "AUF in their bid to foster unity, oneness and encourage ‘idi n’otu’ chose and commissioned the first day of every year as AUF Day. Also speaking during the briefing, the Chairman of the Tenth Anniversary Organising Committee, Comrade Engr. Foundation task students on good moral behaviour for sustainable societal value

The Caring Heart Development Foundation for Good Governance, a non-profit organisation, has called on the school children to imbibe good moral values and renewed hope, anchored on patriotism, equality and love toward building a better society.

Mr Unah Chika, Executive Director of the Foundation, made the call on Monday, at a one-day sensitisation programme tagged, "Build to Last" for Secondary School Children in Umuebe-Izhia, Ohaukwu Local Goveenment Area of Ebonyi.

Our Correspondent reports that the programme organised by the Foundation was held at Plato Government Vocation Secondary School in the area.

Chika, also the Coordinator of Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) and Non-Governmental Organisations ( NGOs) in Ebonyi North zone, said the sensitisation programme was apt to inculcate in the students the good moral behaviours.

The Executive Director encouraged the students to be law abiding and work on the growth of success and nation building.

"The mandate of the programme was to build sustainable character in the school children; you know, the children are the future hope of every nation.

"This the way to shun all forms of negative attitude and maintain peaceful coexistence in the society.

"Moral decadence among school children is becoming alaming. So, there is need for improvement on moral values and behaviours, especially among the young ones.

"These immoral behaviors include examination malpractice, cultism, drug abuse, sexual misconduct, and other forms of indiscipline," Chika stated.

He, however appreciated the School Principal, Mrs Nwilo Bibian for providing an enabling environment for a successful sensitisation programme.

Also speaking, Hon. Prince John Nwangbo, the sponsor of the Programme commended the school for creating an enabling environment for a successful sensitisation of the children.

Nwangbo, also SA to His Excellency, Gov Francis Nwifuru on mining and solid minerals urged the students to shun all forms of social vices in the society.

Bibian, School Principal, commended the foundation for putting up the programme for the students, especially for her school.

She maintained that some of the factors contributing to the decline in moral behaviours include family instability, school-related issues, media influence, peer pressure, and the impact of Western culture.

"To Address the issue, it requires a multi-faceted approach involving families, schools, churches and society in general," Bibian added.

As encomiums continue to pour in to celebrate the minister of works, Engr. David Nweze Umahi''s 62nd birthday, the chairman of the Abakaliki rice mill industry, Chief Obeji Linus, has praised his monumental achievements in providing good infrastructure in Ebonyi state.

Obeji, who gave the eulogy in Abakaliki, the state capital, commended the former governor for currently showcasing expertise and diligence at the federal level as a minister of works, saying that Nigerians are proud and fortunate to have him in the position.

"Generally I'm wishing him a happy birthday. Of course you know that His Excellency, Engr. Dave Umahi, is a father of equity. As far as Ebonyi State politics is concerned, his monumental achievements during his administration are evident everywhere.

"The people of the rice mill and Ebonyi State are proud of what he is doing at the national level. For the first time in the history of Nigeria, a minister has come in to prove that Nigerian roads can be motorable, and there's also the need for new roads to be created, and that has occasioned the coastal highway connecting various states in the nation.

"We are wishing him well and saying that Nigeria is proud and fortunate to have him, and we are praying that God should continue to give him strength for greater assignments ahead of him." Obeji said.

Polycarp Sola - Abakaliki

The Medical and Health Workers Union (MHWUN) has charged the federal government of Nigeria to implement the Memorandum of Understanding signed by both parties towards improving their welfare as well as service years in order to enhance health care delivery in the country.

The charge came at the 47th regular meeting of the Union, held at the Alex Ekweme University teaching hospital, Abakaliki, in the Ebonyi state capital, urging the federal government to play its part of the bargain not to allow political elites and technocrats to truncate the agreement.

Speaking with journalists, the national chairman of the union, Comrade Kabiru Ado, who is also the deputy national chairman of the NLC, and the national chairman of medical and health workers hinted that the MOU was signed on the 29th of October 2024.

"That MOU contains a lot of things; part of the things we signed is the increase in retirement age of our members from 60 to 65 years and 70 to 75 years for consultants.

"We advised the federal ministry of health to take that issue to the Federal Executive Council, because it has been taken to the National Council on Establishment 3 times without approval.

"So, we agreed on that MOU, and the Ministry of Health obliged to that and took the issue to the Federal Executive Council, and His Excellency the President and the Federal Executive Council approved the request and said they should come back to the Federal Ministry of Health.

"Set up MOU to head of civil service and follow due process; unfortunately, along the line, our professional colleagues decided to truncate that issue—that we have been on it since 2014—by saying that the issue of retirement age only affects the clinical staff.

"Health care delivery is teamwork, and nonclinical staff also contributes to the development of health care delivery in this country, and in all our requests, we have never demarcated between clinical and nonclinical staff." Ado said.

He explained that the signed MOU had agreed on the implementation of consultant pharmacy cadres in all our federal health institutions, as a circular was issued from the office of the head of service of the federation, and some tertiary institutions have started implementation.

"Now NMA is saying that should be reversed, and I don't think there is justice to that, so they have issued a 21-day ultimatum to the federal government in order to truncate that MOU, so we are sending a signal to the federal government through the federal ministry of health that altering any part of that MOU will not be taken lightly.

"We have been patient; we have asked our people to remain calm at this time around. We will not hesitate to downtool as a result of that, because a signed agreement is an agreement; it has to be implemented by both parties," he maintained.

However, the Ebonyi State Commissioner for Health, Dr Moses Ekuma, earlier highlighted that the current administration of Governor Francis Nwifuru has been taking care of the welfare of health workers in the state to improve their well-being by providingincentives as well as timely payment of salaries to boost their performance.

Our correspondent reports that Comrade Akinlaya Davidson, who's the National chairman of Titiary health institution and doubles as the national vice president of medical health workers union said the 47 regular meeting would serve as an avenue to help proffer solution to the federal government on how best to treat health workers in the country as well as recommend capable handlers, not politicians and technocrats.

"The government should listen, especially to the workers, they should, prioritize the welfare of workers and address the reason why health workers are running away from the country.

In his path, comrade Ogugua Egwu, the chairman of the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC)Ebonyi state chapter called for unity among health workers across the country in order to reevaluate the entire health sector and chart a way for a better health care system in the country, expressing confidence in the union to come up with a tangible resolution towards enhancing the health care delivery in the country.

Meanwhile, Dr Robinson Chukwudi, the Chief Medical Director of Alex Ekweme University teaching hospital Abakaliki, who was awarded at the event noted that it was due to their commitments towards improving the welfare of workers as well as various innovations in health care delivery at the hospital.

FHC Abakaliki reserves Judgement on suit seeking nullification of Ebonyi LG election

A Federal High Court sitting in Abakaliki Ebonyi State capital presided over by Justice A.I.O Ochoma, on Tuesday reserved judgement in the suit instituted by two indigenes of the State seeking nullification of local government and councilorship elections conducted in the state on July 20th 2024.

This followed the hearing of the suit instituted by one Mr Samuel Udeogu and Mr Isu Amaechi respectively.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC), Governor Francis Nwifuru and the State Government are defendants in the suit.

Recall that the court had earlier nullified the State council election conducted under the immediate past administration of Engr David Umahi for non-compliance with the provisions of the electoral Act 2022.

Dissatisfied with the court ruling by Justice Fatun Riman,, the State Government obtained a judgement from the State High Court which upheld that election and also appealed the judgement of the Federal High Court

The Appeal Court, Enugu division, upheld the judgement of the Abakaliki federal high court.

In his submission, counsel to the second plaintiff Chief Mudi Erhenede, urged the court to nullify the 2024 local government election with substantial cost for falling to abide by the ruling of the Enugu Appeal Court on the Ebonyi 2022 local government election.

He argued that the appeals against the judgement of the Justice Fatun Riman of the Abakaliki Federal High Court, by Governor Francis Nwifuru and the State Government who are the 2nd and 3rd respondents in the suit instituted by Samuel Udeogu and Isu Amaechi, are directly related to the suit being entertained by Justice H.I.O Ochoma.

However, counsel to Ebonyi State Independent Electoral Commission (EBSIEC), and the State Government Barrister I.N Nwideagu, urged the court to discountenance the arguments of the counsel to the 1st and 2nd plantiffs and enter judgement in favour of the 2nd and 3rd defendants with punitive cost.

However, after adopting the addresses of counsel to the plantiffs and defendants, the presiding judge, Justice H.I.O Ochoma, fixed judgement on a date to be communicated to the parties in the suit.

ABUJA, July 19, 2025 A seismic shift is unfolding in Nigeria’s land fraud saga: civil society agitator Maxwell Chibuike Okpara, 79-year-old Colleen Mero Yesufu, and the Yesufu family have launched a smear crusade that is unraveling under the weight of facts. Once presented as defenders of justice, they are now under fire for manipulating public institutions, deploying emotion in place of evidence, and undermining the legal process for personal gain.

Legal experts and concerned Nigerians are questioning whether Okpara was hired by the Yesufu family specifically to conduct unethical public campaigns on their behalf. Despite holding no legal brief in either the criminal or civil proceedings, Okpara has positioned himself as a spokesperson for the family. He has given press conferences calling for enforcement of a forfeiture order — a forfeiture that had already been dismissed by the courts and withdrawn by the EFCC. For a lawyer of his standing to either be unaware of this or to knowingly mislead the public raises serious professional concerns.

Observers now ask: What is Maxwell Okpara’s real interest in this matter? He is not a lawyer on record. He has no place in either proceeding. Yet he has aggressively inserted himself into an ongoing legal dispute — disregarding due process, court rulings, and ethical boundaries. Many in the legal community are stunned that the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has not sanctioned him. His repeated public outbursts, defamatory remarks about law enforcement, and misuse of civil society platforms suggest a pattern of conduct that risks embarrassing the entire legal profession.

Some have gone further, calling him a legal tout and political scoundrel — hired to “undo” a case that is already before the courts. If Okpara truly believes in the rule of law, then he should submit to it, not defy it in public squares. His conduct begs the question: Why has he not been arrested by the Nigerian police for openly defaming the Inspector General and fabricating claims? Civil society groups are free to advocate for transparency, but they must present facts — not fiction — and not act as mercenaries for private interests.

Civic Group Demands Justice — Or Else
At a thunderous press briefing Thursday, Okpara—frontman for INAHURAT—accused the EFCC and Nigerian police of deliberately stalling enforcement of a Federal High Court interim forfeiture order for Guzape Plot 4022 and Katampe Plots 1861–63, originally tied to 79-year-old widow Colleen Mero Yesufu. These allegations are contained in a Daily Post exposé that has rocked institutional trust.

Solidarity Visit by a Seven-Man Delegation of the UNIEC Worldwide National Advisory Council to Mazi Nnamdi Kanu in Abuja


A RENEWED APPEAL FOR UNCONDITIONAL AND IMMEDIATE RELEASE AND REHABILITATION OF MAZI NNAMDI KANU AND HIS COMRADES


Various non Igbos and Igbo leaders, including Chief Edwin Clark and Chief Ayo Adebanjo made similar call for the release of Mazi Kanu , but were ignored and incidentally the two men like Mbazulike Amaechi, Chukwuemeka Ezeife , George Obiozo who also made the call as Ohanaze President General, all are now demised. Other igbo leaders such as Maj Gen Collins R.U Ihekire rtd and Chief Dan Ulasi also added their voices for the unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu alongside organizations, both local and international, including the UNIEC Worldwide had made serious appeals to Nigerian authorities to secure the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, in involuntary detention against any known law. By this visit to Abuja the UNIEC Worldwide is reiterating its demand for the immediate and unconditional release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu and his inappropriately detained colleagues.


Over four years have passed since the extraordinary and unlawful rendition of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from Kenya – an act executed without the official consent of the Kenyan government. That blatant breach of international law, and of the legal frameworks of both Kaenya and Nigeria, continue to draw widespread global condemnations.

Nevertheless, despite multiple Nigerian court orders mandating his release and awarding damages in his favour, alongside a decisive Kenyan ruling denouncing his detention, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu remains incarcerated. His continued detention undermines the rule of law and endangers peace, security, and economic stability in Nigeria’s Eastern areas in particular and maybe even beyond.


In line with this commitment, the United Igbo Elders Council (UNIEC) Worldwide _headed_ by its Director-General, His Lordship, Justice Alpha Ikpeama, _led_ a high-level seven-man delegation to visit Mazi Kanu in Abuja on July 18, 2025. This visit was ratified during the UNIEC Worldwide Plenary Session held on July 5th, 2025, at Enugu, further affirming the Council’s unwavering dedication to justice and human rights.
