Ebonyi LP Explodes Over Alleged Presidential Ticket Plot, Rejects Ezeh, Splendour, Ajimbest, and Others

A crisis has erupted within the Labour Party in Ebonyi State following allegations of an alleged attempt by some party leaders to hijack the structure of the party and secretly negotiate political deals ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The crisis deepened after the party’s State Executive Council publicly rejected the actions of former House of Representatives candidate Dr. Emmanuel Ezeh; former governorship candidate Splendour Eze; the state chairman, Chief Henry Ude, popularly known as Ajimbest; and Chief Mitchell Nwede over what it described as unauthorized political dealings and alleged imposition of a presidential aspirant on the party.

In a strongly worded communiqué signed by the State Secretary, Innocent Igiri, alongside other state and zonal executives, the party accused the affected leaders of sidelining grassroots members and taking critical decisions in Abuja without the knowledge or approval of the state structure.

The executives declared that the Labor Party in Ebonyi “is not a private property” belonging to any individual or group, insisting that no leader has the authority to negotiate or transact business on behalf of the party without consultation with members at the state level.

According to the communiqué, the party rejected what it described as ongoing secret alignments with members of the All Progressives Congress, alleging that the move was capable of destabilizing the Labour Party and destroying the gains made by members since the 2023 elections.

The party specifically raised concerns over the emergence of one Samuel Chibuzor Nwigwe, whom it described as a “core APC stalwart” allegedly introduced into the party structure by Splendour Eze.

The executives alleged that Nwigwe purchased a presidential nomination form without first consulting the party leadership and members in Ebonyi State, describing the action as suspicious and unacceptable.

“You cannot just join a serious party like LP and move straight to Abuja to purchase presidential forms worth N50 million without first engaging the party structure at home,” the communiqué stated.

The executives further claimed that members of the party had made huge sacrifices, suffered attacks, lost businesses, and sustained injuries during internal political battles that shaped the current structure of the Labour Party in the state.

They maintained that such sacrifices would not be allowed to be undermined by what they called “smart moves” aimed at hijacking the party.

The communiqué also accused some leaders of attempting to run the affairs of the party from Abuja instead of the official party secretariat in Ebonyi State, warning that such actions could trigger another round of internal crisis similar to previous leadership disputes within the party.

The party appealed to the national leadership of the Labour Party, including Alex Otti and Esther Nenadi Usman, to resist any attempt to impose decisions on the Ebonyi chapter without consulting stakeholders at the grassroots level.

The executives insisted that every aspirant seeking to contest elections under the Labour Party in Ebonyi State must first engage and carry along the state structure before making any political declarations or financial commitments.

A renowned Support Group code named Nigeria Consensus And Awareness For Bola Ahmed Tinubu (BAT) 2027, has restated its commitment to deliver five million votes to President Bola Tinubu during the 2027 general election.

The National Director on Monitoring, Planning, logistics and Administration of the group Hon Otunba Akin Joye, made the declaration in Abakaliki while addressing stakeholders and supporters on its activities ahead of the forth coming general election.

The Director said that the Support Group has membership across the six geo-political zones of the country.

He stated that the group has embarked on massive deployment of its experts and think tank all over the country, to galvanize the populace towards ensuring total victory of President Bola Tinubu in 2027 general election.

NHRC begins consultation on implementation of 2024–2028 Human Rights Action Plan


The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has convened a state stakeholders’ consultation forum in Enugu on the implementation of the National Action Plan (NAP) for the Promotion and Protection of Human Rights in Nigeria (2024–2028).

Speaking at the forum on Wednesday, Dr Tony Ojukwu, Executive Secretary of the commission described the consultation as a crucial step toward strengthening collaboration, accountability, and coordinated action among government institutions and civil society organisations in advancing human rights in the country.

Ojukwu, represented by Mr Nkechi, NHRC's state Coordinator noted that the National Action Plan serves as a guiding framework for the promotion and protection of human rights in line with the Vienna Declaration and Programme of Action adopted at the World Conference on Human Rights held in Vienna, Austria, in 1993.

According to him, the document reflects a collective commitment by government institutions and non-state actors to address gaps in human rights protection, respond to emerging challenges, and promote an inclusive and rights-respecting society.

The Executive Secretary quoted the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, saying the NAP (2024–2028) reinforces the commitment of the Federal Government to the promotion and protection of human rights as guaranteed under the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, other international and regional instruments, and the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.

Ojukwu recalled that Nigeria adopted its first National Action Plan on Human Rights between 2009 and 2013 as a framework for implementing international human rights obligations and coordinating actions across government institutions.

The Executive Secretary further explained that after the expiration of the 2009–2013 plan, the NHRC initiated and coordinated a decade-long consultative process involving Ministries, Departments and Agencies (MDAs), Civil Society Organisations (CSOs), and other stakeholders.

The process, he said, culminated in the adoption of the National Action Plan (2024–2028), which represents a renewed and comprehensive commitment to human rights promotion and protection in Nigeria.

Ojukwu stated that with the plan now in its implementation phase, there was a need to monitor and evaluate activities across agencies, identify operational challenges, and strengthen implementation strategies where necessary.

He added that the consultative forum would provide stakeholders with an opportunity to discuss implementation modalities, clarify roles and responsibilities, harmonise efforts across sectors, and address emerging gaps.

The Executive Secretary also emphasised the importance of stronger synergy between MDAs and CSOs, stressing that sustainable human rights protection could only be achieved through coordinated and inclusive action.

Dr Uju Agomoh, Executive Director of Prisioners' Rehabilitation and Welfare Action (PRAWA), in her presentation on assessment of how government and non-governmental agencies could be guided in the implementation of the plan, urged stakeholders to support the efforts at ensuring that human rights are well protected.

2027: Methodist Archbishop, Igwe tasks INEC, leaders to conduct free, credible election




The Methodist Archbishop of Ebonyi and bishop of Abakaliki diocese, Most Rev. Dr. Chikwendu Ogan Igwe has, ahead of the forthcoming general election in the country, tasked Nigerian leaders and the independent national electoral commission, INEC, to conduct free, fair and credible elections.

"The 2027 general elections must be free, fair, and credible, devoid of rigging and manipulation" and encouraged Nigerians to obtain their voter's cards, participate actively in the electoral process, and vote for credible leaders who will bring about positive transformation and reduce economic hardship.

The Bishop, Igwe made this known shortly after the 32nd
Annual Synod of the Methodist Church Nigeria, Diocese of Abakaliki, Archdiocese of Ebonyi, and held at the Wesley Urban Methodist Church, Onwe Road, Abakaliki.

The synod, according to him, was marked by deep spiritual fellowship and thoughtful deliberations on matters affecting the Church and Society with a renewed commitment to the mission of preaching the Gospel of our Lord Jesus Christ.

The Bishop, Igwe in an eleven points communique, signed by him and the lay President, Prof. Sunday Onwe, with the theme: “I Will Fight for You” and taking from Exodus 14:14, tasked Nigerians to uphold righteousness and should trust in the Lord for help.

He, however, applauded the efforts of the Ebonyi State governor, Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru to drive his People's Charter of Needs in the state and other dividends of democracy in the state.

The Synod also commends the nation's leadership at the National level over some of its positive programmes under the Tinubu mantra of Renewed Hope Agenda.

The Bishop, Igwe expressed deep concern over the worsening security challenges in the nation, especially the persistent attacks on innocent citizens, churches, and rural communities and called on the Federal and State Governments to take decisive actions to curb terrorism, herdsmen attacks, communal clashes, and the killing of traditional rulers in Ebonyi communities.

The Synod also emphasized the urgent need for infrastructural development and economic growth within the Church, while encouraging members to take responsibility for the protection and development of church properties, as well as the revitalization of the Methodist Care Ministry.

In addressing the economic situation in the country, the Synod decried the rising inflation, hike in fuel prices, and the increasing level of hunger among Nigerians and urged government at all levels to implement policies that will alleviate suffering and improve the welfare of the people.

The Synod further called for an emergency intervention on "the deplorable state of roads, especially in rural areas" and urged national and state leaders to "demonstrate genuine commitment, compassion, and accountability in governance", stressing that the rule of law must be upheld at all times in both the nation and the Church.

On youth development, the Synod called on governments at all levels to tackle the rising unemployment rate by creating job opportunities and providing skill acquisition programs to engage young people productively and reduce crime.

The Synod encouraged Nigerians, particularly Christians, to remain steadfast in faith, trust in God, and live righteous lives, with the hope that God will intervene in the nation’s challenges.

The Synod charged Ministers of the Gospel to remain committed to the preaching of the Good News and to desist from any form of misconduct or criminality that could tarnish the image of the Church.

A non-governmental organisation, One Youth Global, has unveiled a continental network of youth innovation hubs aimed at helping African youths develop practical solutions to community challenges.

The President of the organisation, UcheChukwu Agbo, who spoke to journalists shortly after the unveiling at the Main Library Complex of Ebonyi State University (EBSU), Abakaliki, charged Nigerian youths to desist from crime, and described the facility as a free, fully equipped space designed for young people to build ideas, collaborate, and create solutions.

Agbo said the initiative was a deliberate response to a long-standing challenge across the continent.

“For too long, our young people have had ideas but no platforms, talent but no tools, ambition but no environment to act on.

“The One Youth Hub closes that gap. We are not waiting for the future to be handed to African youth—we are building it with them, one solution at a time.”

He added that the hub aligns with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, including SDG 4 (Quality Education), SDG 8 (Decent Work and Economic Growth), SDG 9 (Industry, Innovation and Infrastructure), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), and SDG 17 (Partnerships for the Goals).

In his remarks, Francis Nwifuru, represented by his Chief of Staff, Prof. Emmanuel Echiegu, described the initiative as timely and visionary.

He commended One Youth Global and EBSU for the partnership and pledged the state government’s continued support for skills development and enterprise.

Also speaking, the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Academic) of EBSU, Prof. Ike-Elechi Ogba, stressed the need to bridge the gap between classroom learning and practical application.

He noted that the hub would promote hands-on learning, innovation, and interdisciplinary collaboration needed to produce job-ready graduates.

The Head of Job Creation at the Federal Ministry of Communications, Innovation and Digital Economy, and National Lead of the Three Million Technical Talent (3MTT) programme, Mr. Eliezar Ajah, said the hub should be fully integrated into students’ academic and creative activities, describing its location within the university library as strategic.

Other stakeholders, including the Vice-Chancellor of Coal City University, Prof. Afam Icha-Ituma; EBSU’s Chief Librarian, Dr. Victoria Nwali; renowned writer Prof. Akachi Ezeigbo; and the Managing Director of Afia TV, Chief (Sir) Emeka Mba, described the initiative as a significant step toward advancing youth empowerment, innovation, and collaborative learning in Ebonyi State and beyond.

The Obedient Movement in Ebonyi has commended the decision of its national leader, Mr. Peter Obi, and former Kano State Governor Alhaji Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso to move to the Nigerian Democratic Congress (NDC) ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The movement also urged its members in the state to immediately withdraw from the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and align with the NDC in support of the new political direction.

The state leader of the movement, Mr. Innocent Igiri, made the call in a press statement made available to journalists on Monday in Abakaliki.

Igiri described the decision by Obi and Kwankwaso as timely, strategic, and capable of strengthening the quest for a new political order in the country.

He said the movement viewed the development as a deliberate step aimed at consolidating forces ahead of the 2027 general elections.

“We commend His Excellency, Mr. Peter Obi, our principal, for this bold and courageous step toward the realization of our collective dream of a new Nigeria,” he said.

Igiri also lauded Kwankwaso for what he described as a demonstration of solidarity and commitment to building a stronger opposition platform.

“We equally appreciate Alhaji Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso for standing with our principal at this critical moment. His support and sense of purpose will not be forgotten,” he added.

He, therefore, directed members of the movement in Ebonyi currently affiliated with the ADC to immediately disassociate themselves from the party and register with the NDC, saying, “As a matter of urgency, all our members should move into the NDC and remain united as we prepare for the task ahead.”

The Community Services & Civil Initiatives, (CSCI Africa) has inaugurated its Local Organising Committee (LOC) for the South East Nigeria Security and Strategic Leadership Summit 2026.

This is with a call for enhanced security consciousness as a foundation for socio-economic development.

Our correspondent reports that the inauguration, which took place on Friday, at Heritage Villa Hotels, Abakaliki, brought together Igbo leaders, traditional rulers, stakeholders, and development partners.

Amb. Stanley-Duke Ngene, Founder of CSCI Africa and Chief Executive Officer of AnyanwuConnect Limited, described security consciousness as a critical pillar for national growth.

According to Ngene, no society can prosper in an atmosphere of fear and instability.

“Security consciousness is more than vigilance; it is the moral compass of a society. Without it, development is fragile and unity is compromised,” he said.

Ngene highlighted the organisation’s vision of an ideal Igbo society anchored on the "Umunnabuike" Initiative, which promotes unity, collaboration, and mutual support among communities.

He noted that since its establishment on May 1, 2023, CSCI Africa had recorded significant milestones, including the organising of security summit in Aug. 2023 as a pilot project and the implementation of the Okposi Ezinasato Project in March 2024.

"The e project combined research-based security strategies with economic empowerment and culminated in a peace summit involving community leaders, political actors, and security agencies.

" "We trained over 150 individuals in the "Launching Leaders Worldwide Project, which is the capacity-building department of AnyanwuConnect, for self-development and hard skills opportunities," Ngene explained.

On education, he said that CSCI Africa’s partnerships with international organisations, including BYU-Pathway Worldwide and RADIUS Pay4me App, had enabled thousands of Nigerians to access foreign scholarships, international payment platforms, and remote job opportunities.

Ngene added that between 2023 and 2025, over 50 students in Abakaliki earned more than N400, 000, through a "Remote Job Opportunities at BYU-Pathway Worldwide and their partners".

The CSCI Africa founder also emphasised the importance of agriculture through its collaboration with the Farmers Support Initiative (UK), aimed at promoting sustainable farming and improving food security.

He said the organisation had adopted the Leading Through Institute (LTI), USA, as its leadership model to promote service-driven and transformational leadership.

Ngene further highlighted key initiatives such as “Launching Leaders and Leadership by LIGHT,” which focuses on poverty reduction through business training and certification, and innovative programmes like “Studyflares for Schools,” an AI-driven educational tool.

He also introduced the SecuraNG Initiative, a security framework designed to align with the Federal Government’s state policing agenda.

Ngene urged stakeholders to commit to collaboration, grassroots engagement, and actionable resolutions that would strengthen security and leadership structures in the region.

“As we inaugurate this committee, we must recognise that security consciousness is not optional but essential for peace, prosperity, and sustainable development,” he said.

The summit is expected to produce strategic recommendations aimed at improving security architecture and fostering socio-economic growth in the South East and Nigeria at large.

President Bola Tinubu has described
Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics(STEM) and Technical, Vocational Education(TVET ) as the hearts of national development and the Renewed Hope Agenda.

He said STEM and TVET form the foundation upon which government can equip young people with the skills and competencies required to thrive in the 21st-century economy.

Tinubu stated this at the Akanu Ibiam Federal Polytechnic, Unwana Afikpo, Ebonyi State, during the 15th Convocation Ceremony of the institution.

Represented by the Director of Human Resources Management, Federal Ministry of Education, Mrs. Nneji Nkiru the President said his administration places a premium on Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics, alongside Technical and Vocational Education.

“By strengthening these disciplines, we are not merely educating for employment, but preparing a generation capable of transforming challenges into opportunities and ideas into enterprises", he said.

He stressed that polytechnics must not be seen as secondary, but as complementary and critical to the university system.

The President highlighted ongoing reforms in tertiary education, noting that the Federal Ministry of Education is focused on improving access, quality, and linkages with the labor market.

He said government has signaled a targeted push to stabilize, fund, and mobilize tertiary education under the Renewed Hope Agenda.

Speaking next, the Rector of the Polytechnic, Dr. Felix Attah, gave a frank assessment of the institution’s challenges and prospects.

He lamented poor student enrollment and lack of steady electricity as some of the key hurdles facing the school.

Attah disclosed that management is currently working on the accreditation of new programs. “This will bring a boom in enrollment, by the grace of God,” he said.

“If we are through with the new programs, we will have more enrollment in both the new and the old programs.”

On infrastructure, the Rector stated that hostels are not problem in the school.

“We have enough infrastructure, like hostels. We have hostels. But up to eighty percent of our students live outside — they prefer living outside.

"We have a hostel, the last one built, and nobody has occupied it. The other ones are also not fully occupied,” he explained.

Socio-cultural group, Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo Youth Movement, has called on the Inspector-General of Police (IGP), Disu to immediately sack and arrest the Tiger Base Commander, Chief Superintendent of Police (CSP) Oladimeji Odeyeyiwa, widely known as Ola.

Others to be arrested include the Chief Security Officer (CSO) to the Imo State Governor, ACP Adamu Shaba Gboyako over their alleged involvement in deploying armed security men that attacked the federal lawmaker for ideato ikenga Imo Ugochinyere for firing tea gas, use of live bullets on ideato people at their peaceful rally in Ntueke, Ideato South LGA.


In a statement signed by its National Secretary, Andy Achilike, the group condemned what it described as a “reckless and unlawful assault” on Hon. Ikenga Imo Ugochinyere, member representing Ideato Federal Constituency, during a peaceful rally in Ntueke, Ideato South Local Government Area of Imo State.


According to the statement, security operatives allegedly drawn from the Government House and the Police Tiger Base unit stormed the venue of the rally—held at a private field of the Christ Anglican Church—armed with live ammunition and tear gas shooting recklessly with intent to harm and indeed harmed over 15 innocent people,claiming they had authority to kill anyone who refuses to leave the venue of the peaceful rally.


The group alleged that the operatives opened fire and deployed tear gas canisters on unarmed civilians, an action that reportedly left at least 15 persons seriously injured. It further claimed that the lawmaker was temporarily blinded as a result of the tear gas.


Ohanaeze youths described the incident as a calculated attempt to assassinate the lawmaker under the guise of security enforcement, insisting that the rally was lawful and peaceful.


The statement also raised concerns over alleged threats reportedly made by some operatives, claiming they had orders to eliminate anyone participating in the rally, including the lawmaker, and that no consequences would follow due to alleged backing from higher authorities.


The group further referenced a previous incident at Ugochinyere’s residence in Akokwa, which it said must be thoroughly investigated as part of a broader pattern of intimidation and violence.


Ohanaeze Ndi Igbo Youth Movement warned that failure to take immediate action against the implicated officers could endanger lives and undermine public trust in security institutions.


“We call for the immediate arrest and dismissal of the Tiger Base Commander, Ola, and the Governor’s CSO, Shaba. Their continued stay in office poses a grave threat to public safety and democracy in Imo State,” the statement read.


The group urged the Inspector-General of Police, Disu to launch a transparent investigation into the incident and ensure that all those found culpable are brought to justice.

Nkechinyere Oginyi, Abakaliki

Residents of Okpanku community in Aninri Local Government Area of Enugu State have raised serious concerns over alleged pollution of their only source of water, the Ivo River, accusing three mining companies operating in neighbouring Ebonyi State of endangering lives and livelihoods.

The conflicting claims have heightened concerns over environmental safety and public health in the affected communities, with stakeholders calling for an independent investigation to ascertain the true state of the river and the impact of mining activities in the area.

The President-General of Okpanku, Engineer Dr. Ajah Kanayochukwu Charles, a former Commissioner for Water Resources in Enugu State, made the allegations while addressing concerns over the environmental and health impact of mining activities in the area.

According to him, Okpanku comprising seven villages including Okpu, Ihuibe, Amabiriba, Amagu, Amaogudu, Ihuezoke, and Amaeze relies solely on the Ivo River for drinking, domestic use, fishing, and farming.

He explained that the river, which flows from Ishiagu through Ihuetutu and surrounding areas in Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, has allegedly been contaminated by mining operations carried out by Greenfield Nigeria Limited, Ambratone Nigeria Limited, and Arab Contractors Nigeria Limited.

“Our community depends entirely on this river. It is the only perennial source of water we have. Unfortunately, it is now being polluted by mining activities, and the consequences are devastating,” Ajah stated.

Drawing from his background in water resources and environmental engineering, he alleged that toxic substances possibly heavy metals are being discharged into the river, posing severe health risks to residents.

“We have observed unusual illnesses and deaths. While I won’t pre-empt the outcome of an environmental impact assessment, I can confidently say these substances are hazardous. Our people are dying,” he said.

Ajah claimed that between 30 and 40 persons have died within the past two years under circumstances he believes may be linked to the polluted water source. He added that repeated appeals to the companies involved have yielded no response.

He called on the Ebonyi State Commissioner of Police and relevant authorities to intervene, urging them to compel the companies to stop further pollution and ensure protection for affected communities.

“We are asking for urgent intervention. Let them stop polluting the river so our people can live. We are open to dialogue, including alternative dispute resolution, but immediate action is necessary,” he added.

However, one of the accused companies, Greenfield Nigeria Limited, has strongly denied the allegations, insisting that its operations comply with all environmental regulations.

Speaking on behalf of the company, Mr. Henry Ahanotu dismissed the claims as unfounded and challenged the accusers to provide verifiable evidence.

“We are not polluting any environment. Our operations strictly follow the stipulated mining laws as regulated by the Federal Ministry of Mines and Steel Development,” he said.

Ahanotu further stated that the company undergoes regular environmental inspections by the National Environmental Standards and Regulations Enforcement Agency (NESREA), noting that compliance checks are conducted frequently.

“NESREA inspects our operations regularly sometimes monthly to ensure compliance with environmental standards, and we have consistently met those requirements,” he added.

He also accused some individuals of attempting to tarnish the company’s image for ulterior motives and warned that Greenfield would not hesitate to seek legal redress against what it described as defamatory claims.

“If these unverified allegations continue, we will pursue legal action. Everyone is free to come and verify our operations. We have nothing to hide,” Ahanotu said.

Governor Siminalayi Fubara has lauded the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) for ts endearing impact on the state 's rural dwellers typified with its Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers (HIRD) scheme.

Fubara gave the accolade at the NYSC Permanent Orientation camp Nonwa--Gbam, Tai Local Government Area during the swearing in ceremony of the 2026 Batch A, Stream 11 Corps Members deployed to the state.

The govrnorr represented by the Secretary to the State Government (SSG) and Chairman of the NYSC Governing Board, Dr Dagogo Wokoma, described HIRD as a veritable intervention in community healthcare delivery services which impact the lives of average Nigerians positively.

"I am happy with the increased population of corps members deployed to the state and it is a reflection of the perception of parents and citizens who appreciate the peace, progress and good governance of this administration.

"This administration will not relent in its commitment to uplift the lives of the graduate youths and leaders of tomorrow.

"I charge the corps members to make the most use of the orientation course experiences, to contribute optimally to nation building."

The State Coordinator of the NYSC in Rivers State, Mr Moses Oleghe said the corps members were eager and willing to make indelible mark in nation building.

Oleghe informed the gathering that the NYSC top management over the years, has been intentional in exposing corps members to practical life changing experiences.

"These experiences have helped in transitioning them from the life of dependency to independence vital for their growth and development.

"I thank the governor for his "superlative and superfluous support to the NYSC Scheme in the State.

"I also appeal for urgent action in executing the 1000 bed space hostel accommodation for male and female corps members at the camp, to ease challenges faced due to increasing corps population deployed to the state.

A total of 3, 665 corps members made up of 1,328 males and 2,337 females swore to the Oath of Allegiance administered by Justice Florence Fiberesima, who represented the Chief Judge of Rivers State.

Youths in the Afikpo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State have staged a protest over what they described as more than 25 years of electricity blackout, declaring that there would be no electoral activities in the area until power is restored.

The protesters, who marched in large numbers, lamented that despite Afikpo producing high-ranking political office holders, including the deputy governor, federal and state lawmakers, local government officials, and commissioners, the area has remained without electricity.

Speaking on behalf of the Odinma Afikpo group, Mr. Charles Otu, a journalist and social activist, said elected representatives from the area must be held accountable, stressing that constructive criticism should not be misconstrued as negativity.

“We want Afikpo Light restored. That was after over a decade. Nothing changed. In 2019, we were promised by then Governor Umahi that before the 2019 elections, Afikpo Light would be restored.

“A five-man committee was set up, made up of Afikpo sons and daughters. To date, nothing has happened. In 2022, again, this agitation came through social media: we want Afikpo light restored.

"From 2022 till now, nothing has changed. The last episode was in 2024, when this same agitation started on Facebook. That was when a famous coinage of Agui, where a bold young man spoke and said the elected people should go to wherever this electricity is having problems and fix it. We have a 133 kV substation in Amasiri. They have been working on that substation since 2001.

“Somebody born in 2001 till now is 25 years old. The person is ready to become a mother if she's a woman. If he's a boy, he's done with the university and he's now asking for employment.

“Why is it difficult to energize the African substation? The governor of Ebonyi state, Mr. Francis Nwifuru, has intervened in this matter. Gave 208 million. In 2024, they told us, they said, "Look,"

“It won't take us three months. It won't take us three months. And this light will be restored. That was where we were in 2024. This is 2026. Two years after what has happened to our people. That's why we came,” Otu said.

The protest, however, was not without internal tensions, as some community stakeholders were accused of attempting to discourage the agitation, describing it as unnecessary criticism.

“They told us they had a general assembly. And they said they don't want people to write. We were waiting for the elders to come out plain and tell us what they meant.

“What did you say? It's criticism. Is it for me, a lawmaker, asking me, a journalist, why he made an event about Afikpo electricity where he represents me and he has been in the House of Representatives for 12 years? Is that what you call criticism? If that is what Afikpo has called criticism today, I am saying that it is not criticism. And I am saying that as a journalist, even if they say they are placing a fine of 100,000 for those who write,

“It is not going to affect me. I am a journalist, and I will not be stopped. I am not going to stop talking about it; I have talked about development issues in Ebonyi for 15 years. Those who know me very well know that in 2011, since my practice, right from Ebonyi Voice till now, you are my colleagues and should bear witness to me. I have always stood for developmental journalism. What will bring development? Is our world developed in darkness? The answer is no,” he said.

Another protest leader, Mr. Iheukwumere Okogwu Otu said the demonstration was aimed at sensitizing leaders to their responsibilities, emphasizing that criticism is an essential part of governance.

“Like, these are people. And it is not a new story that for over two decades, we've not had steady lights. And the bulk of this criticism is because of this lack of electricity. A boy, a girl, or a child that is up to 15 or 20 years old doesn't know what electricity is. If light comes up and the generator is not on, the boy of 15 years will be wondering where the light is coming from. That is how bad it is. And this is a town that has a House of Rep member, deputy appropriation chairman.

“Deputy governor, what do you call it, two House of Assembly members, three commissioners, and all that you have in government? And the place has been abandoned with normalized darkness in Afikpo. And the people you see here have reduced. We were over 2,000 in the morning because it's a matter of concern. No right-thinking person would just endure this situation,” Iheukwumere said.

He further decried the lack of human and capital development in the area, noting that many graduates remain unemployed while resources are allegedly mismanaged.

“And we are saying, without this power restoration, we are not voting and won't allow anybody to campaign.

“That is our resolve. No light. No vote. No light. No vote. So that is our resolve because we've traveled and we've seen how things work. Most of the persons you're seeing here, they have masters.

"Some even have doctorate degrees. And we have somebody in the House of Rep who's seen how jobs are being gotten; the advertisements you see online and in the newspaper have already been given. They share jobs now. Where is the one for our people, our constituency? Instead, they want to keep us especially in darkness because if 500 million can be budgeted for fish into the river, is it 2 billion or 3 billion that he cannot also do it the way he did it to achieve that 500 million for our electricity?

"So it's something that is confusing. And I don't know, most of us are just helpless, especially our elders. I don't know where and how this town, a town that houses the who's who, people who are courageous, people who are brave, and I don't know where they are.

"The promise I'm making to our people, even if it's only me, is the truth; I must continue to agitate, I must continue to ask for the things that are right for the people; I can't do otherwise,” he added.

A female protester, Lady Sheravin Mbe, also told reporters that Afikpo once enjoyed electricity decades ago, recalling efforts by a former lawmaker to restore power.

“You could imagine since 1970, I think from that time till now, it should be more than 49 years. What happened now? That our children, our grandchildren, would say we don't have need of this wire; I do tell them we once had light in Afikpo.

“They now ask me what happened now. I told them I don't know. But some so-called big fish in Afikpo. Because I know there's a lady here that wanted this light and stood firm to make sure that there's light in Afikpo. And her name is Maria Udewachi; her efforts were truncated because she is a woman,” she added.

The protesters insisted that their stance remains unchanged, warning that political campaigns and voting would be resisted if the electricity issue is not urgently addressed.

Observers say the development could have implications for upcoming local government elections and the 2027 general elections if the grievances remain unresolved.

The 2023 governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State, Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, has expressed deep sorrow over the death of the Catholic Bishop of Abakaliki Diocese, Peter Nworie Chukwu, describing it as a monumental loss to the Church and society.

In a statement issued on Wednesday, Odii said he received news of the bishop’s passing “with a deeply heavy heart,” noting that the development came as a shock.

According to him, the initial report of the bishop’s demise was difficult to believe until he made personal contacts that confirmed the tragic development.

He said the late bishop’s transition represents not only a significant loss to the Catholic Church but also a profound bereavement to the wider Christian community and the people of Ebonyi State.

Odii described the deceased cleric as a “spiritual colossus” who embodied humility, discipline, and unwavering devotion to the service of God and humanity.

He noted that throughout his priestly and episcopal ministry, Bishop Chukwu distinguished himself as a compassionate leader, moral guide, and courageous advocate for truth, justice, and righteousness.

“His life radiated the virtues of Christ, strengthening the faith of many and inspiring hope, even in difficult times,” Odii said.

The PDP chieftain, on behalf of his family, stakeholders, and members of the party in the state, extended condolences to the Roman Catholic Church, particularly the Catholic Diocese of Abakaliki, as well as to the clergy, religious, and lay faithful.

He also commiserated with the broader Christian community and all residents of the state whose lives were impacted by the late bishop’s ministry.
Odii urged the faithful to remain steadfast in prayer, expressing confidence in God’s mercy to grant eternal rest to the departed.

He said that while the faithful mourn, they should take solace in the enduring legacy of faith, sacrifice, and selfless leadership left behind by the late cleric.

The PDP chieftain concluded with prayers for the repose of the bishop’s soul and those of all the faithful departed.

On April 4, 2026, nine-year-old Janine Nneoma Obasi walked into the history books in style. That day in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya, she won the prestigious Mini Miss Africa beauty pageant, defeating girls from various countries in the continent and proving that age is no barrier to purpose.

Janine Obasi, who represented Nigeria as Miss Africa Nigeria and Miss KAT (Kids Are Talented) London, mesmerized the audience with her smiles, cat walk, dance steps, intellectual prowess and general stage mannerisms. Indeed, she was a sight to behold.

At the event, she spoke passionately about her culture, values, her country and leadership. She encouraged children to strive to excel in whatever they do. It was a soul-lifting presentation and she got a standing ovation.

As the glittering crown was placed on her worthy head, the hall exploded in celebration. The best contestant had won; no contest about it. But she was magnanimous in victory as she hugged her fellow contestants and spoke encouraging words to them.

For Alhaji Abass Egwu, who participated actively in the online voting section of the pageant and watched the video clips, Janine's performance was phantasmagoric. According to the engineer, her routine on stage was extraordinary, enchanting, appearing seemingly impossible.

He said: "Janine is a rare gem. She is exceptionally impressive, hugely talented and, in a stunning way, like a professional. There is no doubt that she will go places.
"In fact, she is already going places. The stage has been set, she can only go higher. Watching her on stage, she was looking like a ton of diamond. It was like watching magic. It was an incredible scene. Memories are made of such."

On March 28 when she left Nigeria for the competition, she knew she was carrying the hopes of her family, her community, Uburu in Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State and the nation. Of course, she didn't disappoint. The never-say-die Nigerian spirit was on display from beginning to finish. From the online voting stage to the stage performances, she led all the way.
In an interview with Daily Sun before the pageant in Kenya, she said: “I want to be a role model for kids in Africa and to promote African and Nigerian values and culture."

When Janine was asked how she feels being crowned Mini Miss Africa, her experience and future plans, she said: "I feel very happy and proud. It is a big honour for me and my country, Nigeria.
"I learned to be confident, to be hardworking, and to respect everyone
"My plan is to continue my advocacy which focuses on children's empowerment. I want to help people and make positive difference. I think of a world where we are one, where there is no hunger and people are happy."

The young queen advised fellow children to believe in themselves, work hard, and never give up on their dreams.

Janine is a lovely and interesting person. Despite her delicate looks, she is active, lively and tireless. Agatha Emeadi said: "When she is not rehearsing her catwalk or practicing her poise, she can be found swimming, dancing, running, or perfecting her gymnastics routines. Her natural grace and love for performance have been evident since early childhood."

Evangelist Chimezie Obasi, aka Ajakampu, described her as pride of the nation. According to him, Janine has done what many people twice her age cannot accomplish.

He said: "She is a star and she will shine for a very long time. She is a special child. I commend her parents for identifying her rare talents very early and supporting her. Otherwise, she may not be where she is right now. I dare say that she has more to offer the world."

Interestingly, her journey into the pageantry was not planned. Talking about Janine's journey into the world of pageantry, her mother, Mrs Mercy Itohan Obasi, explained: “As her mother, I noticed her interest in modeling when she was about five or six.

“At first, I ignored it. I did not really like all those things. But when I saw her passion growing stronger, I decided to look at the positive side of it and that decision changed everything.

"Call it from Instagram to international stage, one would not be wrong because the moment I stumbled upon an Instagram page advertising a talent competition for children, the London edition of Miss KAT (Kids Are Talented). It was the first of its kind.

“I made inquiries and realized it was a contest for talented kids, I applied for her, and she won the online contest.”

According to Emeadi, "the victory was a turning point. Encouraged by the win, mother and daughter began searching for other opportunities. Their research led them to Mini-Miss Africa. Obasi, therefore, was auditioned, proudly represented her culture, and emerged victorious as Mini Miss Africa Nigeria."

After conquering Africa in Kenya, people of ages gathered at the airport seeking her signature and to snap pictures with the young Nigerian ambassador.

The Chairman of the Ebonyi State Scholarship Board, Chief Chaka Nweze, has commended Governor Francis Nwifuru for his administration’s impactful policies, particularly in the education sector, noting that they have significantly contributed to widespread public support.

Speaking on the achievements of the administration, Chief Nweze stated that Governor Nwifuru has performed beyond expectations across key sectors including infrastructure, agriculture, youth empowerment, and sports.

He emphasized that education remains central to the administration’s “People’s Charter of Needs,” with the National and Overseas Scholarship Programme serving as a flagship initiative.

The programme, which targets 1,000 beneficiaries—300 for overseas studies and 700 within Nigeria—is designed to support academically qualified Ebonyi indigenes in pursuing postgraduate degrees in critical fields such as engineering, technology, medical sciences, and law.

Chief Nweze noted that the selection process was strictly merit-based, ensuring fairness, inclusivity, and equitable representation across all Local Government Areas, without political considerations.

Beneficiaries of the overseas scholarship are currently enrolled in reputable universities in the United Kingdom, while others are studying in leading Nigerian institutions.

He further disclosed that the programme has recorded outstanding academic performance, with a significant number of students graduating with distinctions and many advancing to doctoral studies.

According to him, over 200 beneficiaries have either completed or are nearing completion of their Master’s programmes, while a second batch of over 90 students recently commenced their studies abroad.

Chief Nweze described the initiative as a major investment in human capital development, noting that it has provided opportunities for many families who would otherwise be unable to afford such education.

He reiterated that the programme has strengthened public confidence in the administration and positioned the state for long-term socio-economic growth.

The Adding Beauty to Life Foundation has distributed school uniforms, books, and desks to indigent pupils at Amachara Agbaja Community Primary School as part of its education support initiative.

The school, located in Izzi Local Government Area, benefited from the gesture, which saw 145 pupils receive learning materials, alongside the provision of 30 desks in a school with a population of 268 pupils.

Founder of the foundation, Kessy Anigor, said the intervention was aimed at motivating pupils to take their education seriously, noting that he once attended the same school.

“I grew up in the village and I knew how it was a little bit difficult for me to go to school. And now, by the special grace of God, we can help.

“We had to help because it wouldn't be nice having passed through this stage and holding back. So that's what motivated us,” he said.

Anigor called on well-meaning Nigerians to support initiatives that promote human capital development rather than relying solely on government.

“Everybody must get involved. In fact, we're also the government,” he added.

He further noted that the foundation had previously contributed to the development of the school and would continue to support learning by engaging instructors to periodically teach and monitor the pupils.

“They should bring their children to school. They are not expected to pay anything. And once in a week or twice in two weeks, we are going to be coming here to teach them like we just did today,” he said.

The Headmaster of the school, Nwaga Felix, expressed appreciation for the intervention, describing the school’s previous condition as dilapidated.

“The school was totally dilapidated. I was thinking on how to revitalize the school but as God made it, he brought me the group or the foundation that came to redeem me from that problems ,if I'm asked to express my joy it will not end this evening. All I'm just trying to say is that God will be with them forever,” he said.

Felix, however, urged government authorities to complement the foundation’s efforts in improving public education, particularly in rural areas.
“I've seen that the government is so tired. They don't know what to do again because seeing the whole area… almost all the public schools is just like my own.

“No seats, no instructional material. So I should say government, you have to come and help the people and the teachers in order to enhance the teaching and learning,” he added.

One of the beneficiaries, Favor Nwamini, expressed gratitude to the foundation and pledged to work harder in her studies in appreciation of the support.

The President of the Eternal Brothers Club, Hon. Charles Akpu-Enika has told members of the club that their financial contributions are the reason the club has erected infrastrutural wonders at its Headquarters at Obama Community, Abakaliki.

Akpu-Enika, the Immediate Past Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports in Ebonyi State, made the assertion during a project inspection of projects at the headquarters with members of the club,, held before its second general meeting of the year.

The "Game Changer as he is called in Ebonyi social and political circles, noted that all dues, levies, donations and other forms of financial commitment from members, have been judiciously deployed toward the projects.

"This club headquarters was started in June 2025 and with the rapid and massive rate of work on it, would be inaugurated in November this year by the Wonder Working Governor of the state, Rt. Hon. BLD Francis Nwifuru.

"The alluring "Gate House' of the headquarters was started in August 2025 and you can see that it is 90%completed and barring unforeseen crivunstances, will be commissioned in June this year.

"This astronomical rate of construction has been mind-boggling because it is difficult to see people from various states and strata of the country, coming together in love and unity to work towards this common purpose."

He noted that the edifice houses exquisite lodging facilities with ultra modern suites, hall, lounges, offices, among other top-notch relaxation and administrative facilities.

"It is pertinent to note that materials used in constructing these projects are sourced from members and we assure that all available resources would be judiciously deployed to complete the projects and make the club a spectacle."

Rt. Hon Richard Idike, the Board of Trustees (BOT) Chairman of the club commended the executive for the majestic projects being witnessed, noting the the club was in good hands.

Idike, the Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports in the state, said that such wonder on display will continue motivating the BOT of the club, to offer necessary assistance and guidance to the executive.

"When I see the massive, rapid rate of work here, I begin to wonder where the funds are coming from.

"When I then hear that the funds are sourced from members' contributions, I feel awed of the transparency of the executive and avid commitment of members to succeed.

"I encourage the members to sustain such commitment and urge those lagging behind in commitment, to have a rethink and emulate those committed to this success being witnessed."

Neuropsychiatric Hospital Enugu: Court issues contempt notice over alleged disobedience of reinstatement order

The National Industrial Court of Nigeria (NICN), Abuja Division, has issued a notice of consequences of disobedience to court order against the Minister of State, Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare and the Medical Director, Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu.

The notice, filed in Suit No. NICN/ABJ/130/2024, arose from an alleged failure to comply with a subsisting court judgment delivered on Dec. 11, 2025, in favour of Prof. Monday Igwe.

Prof. Igwe, the applicant in the case, had challenged the termination of his appointment as Medical Director of the Federal Neuropsychiatric Hospital, Enugu.

In its judgment, the court declared his termination null and void, nullified the appointment of Dr. Unaogu Ngozichukwu Nneka as Medical Director, and ordered the immediate reinstatement of Prof. Igwe alongside the payment of his salary arrears.
However, the court noted that as of April 14, 2026, the judgment had allegedly not been complied with, as Dr. Unaogu continued to function in the capacity of Medical Director, while Prof. Igwe had yet to be reinstated.

The notice, issued pursuant to relevant provisions of the law, warned that failure to obey the court’s directive could result in contempt proceedings, including possible imprisonment of those found culpable.
The affected parties listed in the notice include the Minister of State for Health and Social Welfare and Dr. Unaogu Ngozichukwu Nneka.

The court emphasised that the order remains valid and binding, noting that its execution had not been stayed.
The matter underscores growing concerns over compliance with judicial pronouncements by public institutions.

The executive members of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), South-East Zone, on Wednesday paid a courtesy visit to one of the party’s prominent supporters, Chief Samson Nnamani, popularly known as “Odera,” in a move aimed at strengthening unity and solidarity within the party.

Speaking during the visit, the National Vice Chairman for the zone, Barr. Ray Nnaji, said the leadership deemed it necessary to identify with loyal members who have continued to support the party through difficult times.

Osigwe noted that the honour was in recognition of the humanitarian service of the chairman, which she said is not only commendable but also worth emulating.



She said the Foundation is committed to recognising individuals who have made significant impacts in the society, adding that the humanitarian programmes of the council boss are drawing attention nationwide.



Osigwe highlighted some of the programmes to include payment of monthly stipends to widows, widowers, and persons with disabilities as well as executing projects that benefit the downtrodden.



While urging him to sustain his good work and not be distracted by naysayers, the coordinator challenged other leaders to emulate the Igbo-Etiti council chairman.



“Honourable Mayor, you have distinguished yourself, and there is no better way to appreciate you than this honour.



“You disposition and attitude towards leadership is uncommon and exemplary,” she added.



In his remark, the Enugu State Commandant of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, NSCDC, Elijah Etim Willie, applauded the Foundation for the honour bestowed on deserving individuals, including some NSCDC officers.



The NSCDC boss stressed that honour would encouraged them to do more, and commended the council chairman for his huge investment in security architectures.



He revealed that Odo singlehandedly built and equipped two NSCDC Divisional Headquarters in Ekwegbe and Ohodo as well as Area Command in Nkporogwu Ukehe.



According to him, people should be appreciated and celebrated for their efforts and contributions to humanity when they are alive instead of when they died, a gesture he noted the Foundation is doing.



Speaking shortly after being decorated, Odo said his administration would continue to have a human face in dealing with the people, especially the less privileged and the vulnerable.



Odo emphasised that his government is committed to improving the welfare of the poor; a decision he maintained has guided his policies and programmes.



“I want to tell you that I am not in power only to provide governance but provide governance that has human face.



“The governance that people can touch, feel, and have a sense that once there was a government that cares for those who have no voice at all and have nobody for them.



“Our duty as a government is to assist those who are really poor and give them a platform for people to equally see them as human being.



“Our administration will not relent in some of the things we do for the less privileged in Igbo-Etiti,” the council boss hinted.



He then pledged to partner and support the activities of the Foundation to enable them to make a huge impact on society.

The President of Ebonyi State integrated building materials, Chief Fidelis Onyibe Onwe has tasked traders to maintain peace and order, warmed critics who have vowed to make the market ungovernable for him to stay clear.

Onwe who was reacting to the petition and protest by tile salers in the building material, accused some persons who are close to the corridor of power in the state, of threatening to make the market ungovernable for him.

He, however, vowed that the leadership of the integrated building materials will galvanize thousands support to ensure that the governor Francis Nwifuru's re-election in 2027 is achieved and sacrosanct.

Onwe revealed the preparedness of traders in the market to stage a maga rally for the governor ahead of the 2027 election, emphasizing the good leadership quality of the governor, his numerous achievements, human capital development/ empowerment are enormous and should be allowed to continue till 2031.

"The whole integrated building materials will vote massively for governor Francis Nwifuru come 2027. And I promise.And it must come to pass.

"Our governor is doing well.Come and see developments in every corner of the state. He's a man of the people. So I cannot do anything that will tarnish his image.

"The whole integrated building materials have a plan. We're going to do a maga rally to support the governor's second term

The President, Onwe also reiterated the committed efforts of his leadership to completely develop the integrated building materials into an ultramodern market, where investors will be highly willing to come to invest.

He urged critics, especially those who are close to the corridor of power in the state, to embrace peace, and shouldn't be propelling traders, especially the tile section to revolt against his governance in the market.

"Some people in the tiles section just hated me for no reason. But that will not make me weak. I know what I'm doing. And they are just trying to tarnish my image.

On the area of the development of the market, Onwe said: "Since I took over the leadership of the integrated building materials over two years ago. That place didn't look like a market, it was not habitable and looked like an animal Kingdom, when the government took us to that place.

"I was very desirous for the development of the market, that's why when we came on board, I used my personal huge sum and borrowed from friends who are supporting my leadership to hire a grader to latriate the whole market because everywhere was swampy.

"The entrances to the market were impassable and we decided to put two maga culverts. We had to borrow again both materials and money to do the projects.

"Since we latrated the whole market and the entrances, the market became motorable. We sandfil large part of the market, and mounted street lights everywhere.

"Remember, when I took over the leadership, no money was available for me to start anything, rather I met Dept.

"We never imposed any levy to anybody till date, except one certain time, we expected governor, Francis Nwifuru to come and show us where we will build the hall. We don't have a hall.

"People are very happy over my leadership. First of all, there is peace.You can't come to building materials and find any war or crisis or malice within each other.

"We are in peace, except for some elements who have vowed that they will make my leadership ungovernable.Even at that, I respect them.

"I don't quarrel, I don't make problem with anybody. This last one.We had a meeting and agreed to contribute50,000 and later reduced to 30,000.We have four sections of market.Aluminium, weather, tiles and building itself.

"We are micro-integrated. And, all these sections have its chairman and I am the overall president. We are currently building mega toilets and buildings in the area.

"We agreed that those whose shops have projections will pay the money. We don't have gates and then, we want to complete the parameter fencing, so that the market will be more secured" he stressed.

FG, Tantita, NNPCL win as court Okays Renewal of Pipeline Surveillance Contract

....rejects application to split job, strikes out Ex parte application Seeking to Stop it.

The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) High Court, Abuja, has dismissed a suit seeking to halt and restructure the renewal of the nation’s pipeline surveillance contract, describing it as contrary to national economic interests.

The Court, presided over by Justice Bello, gave the ruling in a suit filed by the Registered Trustees of the People’s Well-Being Association.

Joined as defendants in the suit are the Attorney General of the Federation, Nigerian National Petroleum Company Limited (NNPCL), Nigerian Security and Civil Defense Corps (NSCDC), Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited, Pipeline Infrastructure Nigeria Limited (PIN), and Abokus Integrated Security Services Limited.

The claimants had sought, among other reliefs, an interim injunction restraining the Federal Government and NNPCL from renewing or continuing with the pipeline surveillance contract.

They also requested that national security agencies take over pipeline protection and that details of payments made under the contract be disclosed before the Court.

However, in its ruling, the Court refused the application and declined to grant the interim orders.

Justice Bello held that granting such reliefs would be inimical to national economic stability, warning that it could create a vacuum that could trigger increased oil theft and significant revenue losses.

The Court emphasized that pipeline security remains central to Nigeria’s economic survival and is a matter of overriding public interest.

According to the Court, “no court of law should grant an order capable of plunging the nation into economic crisis.” The Court further held that the Federal Government and NNPCL are at liberty to proceed with the renewal of the pipeline surveillance contract and must ensure there is no operational vacuum pending the determination of the substantive suit.

The Court consequently ordered that all parties involved in the surveillance operations, including Tantita Security Services Nigeria Limited and Pipeline Infrastructure Nigeria Limited, should continue discharging their responsibilities in the national interest.

The ruling reinforces the critical role of existing surveillance arrangements in safeguarding Nigeria’s oil infrastructure and sustaining economic stability.

The African Democratic Congress (ADC) in Ebonyi State has returned Dr. Jennifer Adibe Nwafor as its State Chairman through a consensus arrangement, securing another four-year tenure to lead the party.

The state congress, held at Aristocrats Hotel along Ezza Road in Abakaliki, the state capital, brought together party faithful and delegates from across the state.

The Chairman of the ADC Electoral Committee in Ebonyi State, Mr. Ebonyi Ikechukwu, officially declared Dr. Nwafor the duly elected chairman, affirming that the process was conducted in line with the party’s guidelines.

He announced her victory alongside other members of the newly elected state executive.

Also speaking, the Secretary of the Electoral Committee, Hon. Joseph Nwafor, disclosed that the consensus decision followed a headcount of about 1,224 party faithful, with 1,213 accredited delegates affirming Dr. Nwafor’s unopposed emergence.

Other executives elected during the exercise include Mgbroko Chukwudi N. as Secretary and Okpara Emmanuel N. as Deputy Chairman, among others.

Ebonyi State stakeholders of the National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) have endorsed Comrade Nwuruku Olisa Alfred as the state’s sole candidate for the position of Senate President ahead of the 2027 national convention.

The endorsement was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of a stakeholders’ meeting held on Friday at the Faculty of Law, Ebonyi State University, Abakaliki.

Chairman of the forum, Comrade Okoro Joshua Offor, said the decision followed wide consultations among student leaders, including SUG presidents and campus representatives across the state.

He said the endorsement was based on Nwurukwu’s leadership experience, capacity, and contributions to the student movement, stressing that Ebonyi stakeholders had resolved to present a united front at the national convention.

The forum described the move as a strategic political alignment aimed at strengthening Ebonyi’s influence within the national leadership structure of NANS.

It called on all student leaders and stakeholders from the state to mobilise support for the candidacy, warning against actions capable of undermining the collective decision.

The stakeholders also urged Nigerian students to participate actively in the 2027 general elections, while emphasising peaceful conduct and adherence to democratic principles.

A coalition of civil rights group in Afikpo/Edda federal constituency, Ebonyi State, have urged aspirants for the position of House of Representatives seat in the area including the incumbent member representing the constituency, Chief Iduma Igariwey, the Deputy Governor of the State, Princess Patricia Obila, the members representing both State Assembly in the area and other politicians cum aspirants from the zone to restore power supply to Afikpo, the headquarters of the constituency if they must campaign in the area in next year's general election

The groups, Afikpo Intelligentsia in the Diaspora, (AID), # _RestoreAfikpoLight_ # Campaigners Abroad and Odinma Afikpo Group, (OAG) where reacting to the statement recently credited to Igariwey wherein he maintained that it is within the powers of the Federal Government of Nigeria to fund constituency projects, not lawmakers, thus, describing the recent surge of online criticisms that have trailed the over two decades of darkness particularly in his ancient Ehugbo community as borne out of ignorance.

Leaders of the groups, Charles Otu, representing Odinma Afikpo Group (OAG), Olughu Franklin Nnamdi who signed on behalf of Afikpo Intelligentsia in the Diaspora, (AID) and Collins Alum Eze, representing # _RestoreAfikpoLight_ # Campaigners Abroad opined that the 1999 Constitution (as amended), the Electricity Act 2023, and the Electricity Act (Amendment) 2025 did give a federal lawmaker some ample and adequate tools - not exactly to generate electricity by himself, but to force action from those who can.

It read, "For us, as concerned groups, worried by the over 20 years lack of electricity in Afikpo LGA, one of such ways we believe our lawmaker, Hon. Igariwey ought to have put the pressing matter of the restoration of electricity in his Afikpo LGA not only on record but a topical and important concern is by moving a Motion of Urgent Public Importance on the floor of the House of Representatives where he has bestroden like a phenomenal colossus and forcing a debate even more particularly using his influence and position as a co-chairman of the House Committee on Appropriation.

"This, in our understanding and estimation could have yielded a more positive impact being that he has occupied the said highly sensitive Appropriation Committee co-chair position where for instance, his interrogation of a senior NDDC Staff, Professor Daniel Kemebradikumo Pondei sometime in July 2020 by his committee led to the total collapse of a top management staff who was accused of corruption and financial malfeasance.

"We recollect and strongly commend him however that in the year 2020, our lawmaker, the same Hon. Igariwey had caused an appearance to be made before the House Committee on Power, summoning the leadership of the Transmission Company of Nigeria, (TCN) to a public hearing wherein he poured out the anger and frustration of his constituents over the nearly two decades of darkness in his community. However, we were thoroughly disappointed that nearly six years after the 2020 'summon' of TCN, no words have ever come from the lawmaker regarding a follow up on the darkness that has become a deeply growing concern among his constituents he has represented for about 12 unbroken years.

"Anticipatedly, the people of Afikpo and Edda which are both highly urban with many educated elites and personalities had long waited patiently that since 2015 when _Okpudo_ as Igariwey is favouritely called ought to have inserted a specific line item for the Amasiri-Afikpo transmission line in the Appropriation Bill and follow up same until the money is released and spent. He could have also filed formal petitions to NERC and the Rural Electrification Agency to put Afikpo on the priority list. We believe, contrary to Igariwey's posturings, that these are all within his constitutional powers of representation, oversight and appropriation especially within the powers of a ranking lawmaker like him who surely knows his way in and out of the National Assembly.

"As a coalition, we rightly insist and agree with those who have argued that after 12 whopping years in the House, Afikpo deserves the full weight of Okpudo's legislative office and actions- not just appeals behind closed doors, but motions on record, committee hearings, and budget insertions that compel federal agencies to answer in public. Rather, what we have witnessed in return is the unarguable fact that the lawmaker has totally avoided all foras called by the people for him to give account of his stewardship on the pressing subject matter like other politicians had done in the past.

"Ordinarily, we had high hopes that our dear powerful lawmaker who admittedly has constructed many roads across the two LGAs of Afikpo and Edda as constituency projects, executed water projects and have done

The Federal Government has reiterated its stance that social work practice has come to stay in Nigeria as its practitioners have evidently worked tirelessly in making the society better.

The Permanent Secretary of the Federal Ministry of Women Affairs and Social Developmemt, Mrs Nko Esuabana made the submission in her address to celebrate the 2026 sociall work day in Ebonyi organised by the Department of Social Work, Ebonyi State University Abakaliki, Nasow and Amsow Ebonyi state chapter and local governmental service commission.

Esuabana noted that the FG recognizes the efforts of social work practitioners in advancing human dignity, societal cohesion and community wellbeing.

The permanent Secretary said that the social development policy for Nigeria (1989) mandated the FG to establish the National Council for Social Work Education, to set standards for certification and registration of social work practioners.

"Nigeria in 2022,, provided a functional legal framework for social work practice in Nigeria through the efforts of states and non state actors.

"In realising the importance of a legal backing for an effective and qualitative practice of social service workforce in Nigeria, the federal ministry of women affairs urges other social work focal ministries and stakeholders; to support a bill for the establishment of the Nigerian Council for social work.

"This is in consideration of the importance of a regulatory body for the development and proper placement of the social work profession coupled with the fact that the bill focusses on regulating the conduct of practitioners who are providing welfare services to vulnerable Nigerians," she said.

Prof. Friday Onwe, Head of Social Work Department, EBSU said the occasion re-inforces social workers' commitment to the ethical principle of dignity, solidarity and empowerment of people to overcome adversity.

"This occasion is a reminder to uphold the fundamental principles of social justice, human rights and dignaty for all especially when they come under attack.

"As we navigate an increasingly complex world--facing challenges from environmental crises to societal inequality, the need for skilled, ethical and compassionate social workers, has never been greater.

"The world recognises your unwavering commitment to building a better, more equitable future."

He noted that social work is not just a profession but an agent of hope and positive change.

The Dean, Faculty of Social Sciences and Humanities of the institution, Prof. Nkechi Emma--Echiegu thanked the university for helping us realise our dream of making the unit a full department come true and it has gotten full accreditation for the next five years.

"We started with a dilapidated building given to us by the university but it presently ranks among the best departmental offices in the institution.

"We have grown in leaps and bounds and judciously utilsed all assistance received, to become what we are presently.

"The department has started a disability agency in the university, where our students identify and assist their physically challenged colleagues as part of their field work practicuum."

Goodwill messages were delivered on the occasion by the Association of Medical Social Workers of Nigeria (AMSWON) Association of Social Work Educators of Nigeria (ASWEN) and the Nigeria Association of Social Workers (NASow) Ebonyi State Chapter.

A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State, Barr. Livinus Obasi Onu, has commended the people of Onicha Local Government Area, particularly Onicha West State Constituency, for their overwhelming show of support in honour of the PDP leader, High Chief Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, in Ebonyi state.

Onu, who spoke with newsmen at his residence in Isu, described the large turnout at the recent event as a clear demonstration of unity, love, and commitment to a shared political vision.

The Minister of Works, David Umahi, on Thursday inaugurated completed sections of the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway, describing the project as a major milestone in the rehabilitation of critical infrastructure in the South-East.

Umahi, who spoke at Ugwu-Onyeama along the expressway, attributed the progress on the road, valued at over ₦350 billion, to the intervention of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

He said the opening of the sections would ease traffic congestion, especially during the Easter period, noting that the road had been in a deplorable condition for years.

According to him, commuters previously spent up to seven hours on a journey that should take far less time, adding that although the contract was awarded before 2023, the project suffered delays and was abandoned for about eight years.

The minister explained that the road was initially executed under a tax credit scheme involving private sector participation but stalled until the current administration intervened.

He said the Federal Government subsequently ordered the acceleration of the project and approved a redesign of critical sections to enhance durability.

Umahi said while elements of the initial ₦202 billion contract were retained, a 72-kilometre stretch was carved out for reconstruction using reinforced concrete at an estimated cost of ₦150 billion.

He noted that the adoption of concrete pavement technology would significantly extend the lifespan of the road.

The minister disclosed that the first 15 kilometres of the reinforced concrete section, now about 97 per cent completed, had been opened to traffic.

He added that other segments, including an 18-kilometre stretch towards Anambra and a 39-kilometre section near the Niger Bridge axis, were at various stages of construction.

Umahi further said contractors handling remaining asphalt sections had been directed to adopt reinforced concrete, noting that such roads could last between 50 and 100 years with minimal maintenance.

He expressed optimism that upon completion, at least half of the highway would be constructed with reinforced concrete, reducing maintenance costs and improving safety.

The minister also highlighted other ongoing Federal Government projects in the region, including the Enugu–Port Harcourt Expressway, Enugu–Abakaliki road dualisation, Afikpo–Abia–Okigwe corridor, and Aba–Port Harcourt road.

He listed additional works to include access roads and interchanges linked to the Second Niger Bridge, as well as the rehabilitation of collapsed bridges along the Enugu–Onitsha corridor.
Umahi dismissed claims of abandoned projects in the region, urging the public to verify progress through site visits.

He reaffirmed the government’s commitment to completing the Enugu–Onitsha Expressway by 2026, expressing confidence that the project would boost transportation, safety and economic activities in the South-East.

The minister, however, called on leaders and residents of the region to support President Tinubu’s administration and his re-election bid.
According to him, sustained support for the administration would enable the region to attract more infrastructure development.

A Politicall Analyst, Dr Innocent Unah has declared that Governor Francis Nwifuru has demonstrated a perceptive grasp of.Ebonyi socio-- political economy with his dexteterious handling of the state's affairs.

Unah made the disclosure in an interview on Tuesday in Abakaliki, noting that the governor has shown restraint in handling socio-political events in the state especially, security issues.

The public analyst maintained that the governor's neutrality conveys respect, his intervention restoring calm to warring areas without recourse to whose ox is gored.

:"The governor must stabilise the positive security situation in the state by implementing the 2003 boundary gazette drafted during an earlier administration.

"This gazete apparently offers a neutral demarcation based on historical claims and surveys.

"Clear boundaries would reduce ambiguity as the governor must control negative externalities and cushion the economic losse for businesses occasioned by conflicts."

He noted that the disrupted education for children and psychological trauma for families in conflict areas have taken a huge toll on the affected persons.

"The governor could establish a rehabilitation fund to compensate victims in conflicting areas such as Amasiri and Okporojo communities of Afikpo and Edda Local Government Areas of the state.

"This will let the people air their grievances, promote dialogue on the economy, shared infrastructure projects ie access roads among others."

Unah hailed the govrrnor for his decisive actions and exhibitive wisdom which has earned him the trust of the public and affected disputing communities.

"Ebonyi has been known as the most peaceful state in the south east zone and the governor must be supported to sustain the trend."
