The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) in the 2027 general election, Mr Peter Obi, has vowed to fight corruption in Nigeria if elected president.

Obi made the declaration in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, during a town hall meeting with party members who turned out en masse to demonstrate their support for him at City Hub.

Obi, who described corruption as a product of failed leadership, said that when a leader is not corrupt and does not involve family members in the affairs of government, others would follow suit, adding that anyone found guilty of corruption would be jailed.

"I will fight corruption like no other one has fought it before. Nobody, public money must be used for public good. Nobody will steal our money again."

"Starting from the president. And I assure you, while the president is not stealing, the wife and children have been producing as many as 50% down the road," Obi said.

He disclosed seven areas in which he would declare a state of emergency, including power, security, healthcare, agriculture, education, national unity and the fight against corruption, to address the immediate needs of Nigerians.

Obi also criticised presidential candidates who, according to him, failed to visit communities to understand the needs of the people, describing President Bola Tinubu as incompetent to lead a country whose citizens he could not visit to assess their welfare.

"Today your country is insecure. We cannot have criminals taken over the state. We will deal with it. Today people are hungry in your country. We don't want Nigerians to be going through that. But we are here for Town Hall.

"And that Town Hall is saying that I want to know your problems. Leadership must not be by supply. It must be by demand. That's what we want to do. People want to be president. People want to be this.

"They don't know where Abakaliki is. They don't know where Ikwo is. They don't know where Ezzilo is. They don't know where Nkalagu is. It now has to be present. You have to go to the people. The people have to see you. They have to walk the street with you.

"We need a Nigeria that will provide jobs for the people on the road to you. A Nigeria where pregnant mothers can go to private healthcare and be looked after for the beauty of our youth.

"We will provide a primary healthcare to reduce infant and mother's mortality, a Nigeria where a child of nobody can become somebody without knowing anybody. That is Nigeria we desire. I have a wish to it. That it would start it by electing competent, credible, capacity, energy for the job, have the compassion and commitment to change Nigeria," Obi added.

Meanwhile, the party's leader in Ebonyi State and former governor, Dr Sam Egwu; the NDC senatorial candidate for Ebonyi Central, Prof. Bernard Odoh; and the party's senatorial candidate for Ebonyi South, Rt. Hon. Linus Okorie, urged party members to take the party's message to their communities, ensure they vote on election day and protect their votes.

The Nigerian Union of Local Government Employees (NULGE) in Ebonyi State has declared support for Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru’s re-election bid ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The union, comprising members across the state’s 64 development centres and 13 local government areas, made the declaration in Abakaliki on Wednesday following a rally organised to demonstrate support for the governor’s second-term ambition.

At the event, the union adopted a motion endorsing Nwifuru’s re-election, citing his administration’s interventions in workers’ welfare, healthcare, infrastructure and other sectors.

The motion was moved by the union’s former vice-president, Mr Patrick Igwe, and seconded by Comrade Emegha Udogboro, the NULGE branch chairman in Afikpo Local Government Area.

“I hereby move a motion that Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru will return for a second term in office,” Igwe said.

The state president of NULGE, Comrade Ewah Mathew Stanley, commended the governor for addressing outstanding pension and gratuity payments, salary increments and bonuses for workers.

Stanley said the payment of outstanding retirement benefits had restored hope among local government employees who previously feared they might not receive their entitlements after retirement.

“Before now, as a local government worker, if you were approaching retirement age, either you died or fell sick because you had no hope of getting your gratuity. But today, I am even praying that I will retire during his administration so that I can get my money and start something,” he said.

“He made it happen, and he revived the lives of our retirees. Whoever works deserves to be taken care of in old age.

“Secondly, the Federal Government approved a minimum wage of N70,000, but in Ebonyi, we are receiving a minimum wage of N90,000.

“In Ebonyi, some of us earn salaries of up to N80,000, but every year, we receive N100,000 as a Christmas bonus. It goes a long way in supporting our families,” Stanley said.

He added that the union had reached a consensus across local government areas and development centres to support Nwifuru’s second-term bid.

“Today, we have come to say that we are adopting him for a second term in office. We have met at the local government level and at the development centre level, and we have agreed that he should also be a candidate in 2027.

“We do not have other candidates. As others have said, we will vote for the APC from top to bottom. We have no other candidates except APC candidates,” he said.

He dismissed suggestions that the endorsement would undermine the chances of candidates from other political parties, insisting that the union was acting in appreciation of the administration’s achievements.

“A good job deserves another. A worker who does a good job deserves to be rewarded. They have done well, and it has to be paid for. We owe him our votes, and we will give him our votes because of what he has done. He also denied allegations that members were being compelled or sponsored to attend the rally.

“We do not force them. The government’s activities have made everybody agree to vote for him. We are not forcing them. The crowd here was not forced, and we did not even sponsor them. Everybody came on their own because of what the government is doing,” he said.

“We are not forcing them. We are paying for good work, and that is why nobody was forced to come here. We came willingly because of his work for government workers,” he added.

The president appealed to the state government to recruit more workers into the local government system, saying staff shortages had become a major concern.

“We are asking the governor to kindly recruit local government workers because we no longer have enough staff in the local government system,” he said.

He also urged the governor to review the allowances and remuneration of principal officers, including heads of department (HODs), principal personnel managers (PPMs) and deputy personnel managers (DPMs).

“We also thank him for what he has done, but we still request that he look into the stipends of our principal officers, including HODs, PPMs and DPMs.

“The economy is too harsh, and what they have been receiving is not even enough to fuel their cars. We need to revisit the allowances and make them meaningful,” he said.

Speaking at the event, Igwe urged members to work towards implementing the resolution endorsing Nwifuru’s re-election.

“If we work towards this motion, we will move as seconded. Because there are enemies on board, if after moving a motion, it is not seconded and put into practical terms to get it done, we will be making a mistake,” he said.

He urged members to work towards returning Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru to office for a second term.

Also speaking, Comrade Rebecca Onwe, a local government employee at Effium South Development Centre in Ohaukwu Local Government Area, said the rally was organised to appreciate the governor for his support for local government workers.

“Today is to show appreciation to His Excellency, Right Honourable Builder Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, for his kindness and love towards workers at the local government level.

“He has done well by accommodating the workers. Before now, it was not like this. But His Excellency, in his kind heart, has carried local government workers along,” she said.

Onwe commended the administration for ensuring the timely payment of salaries as well as addressing the outstanding pension and gratuity obligations.

The rally ended with renewed calls by union members for the governor’s re-election in 2027, alongside appeals for additional recruitment and improved welfare for local government employees.

Residents and candidates of various political parties have rejected a bill by the Ebonyi State House of Assembly seeking payment of N150million fee for the erection of campaign billboards in the state, describing the move as both repressive and oppressive.

Ebonyi residents claimed that Governor Francis Nwifuru's administration was deploying different subtle and obnoxious measures to silence the opposition ahead of the Saturday, January 16 and Saturday, February 6, 2027 elections to have a smooth ride to victory.

Speaking to journalists at different interview sessions in Abakaliki, on Wednesday, they maintained that the trend if allowed unchecked was capable of causing a breach of law and order in the state.

According to the governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party in the 2027 polls, Dr Kingsley Agbor, the bill was both unfortunate and devastating. He added that the ugly scenario could throw the state into a dark era.

He said, "It is most unfortunate and devastating how our patriotic citizens liberated us from military rule only to see the government of the day in Ebonyi State taking us back to those dark era. People paid the supreme price for this democracy some of us are toiling with today. I have always wished that these dictators in civilian clothes joined the military so as to seize power by the barrel of the guns and rule as it pleases them.

"The government of Nwifuru once again wants to stiffle the political space for the opposition political parties to operate. This is seen with this outrageous cost of elections and campaign billboards. To him and his supporters, it is and must be a one party state even when the constitution of Nigeria stipulates otherwise. Most times, stiff decisions like this come when the government is not very popular in the state. So in a nutshell, the government wants to once again completely annihilate the opposition party but in every democracy, opposition can never be silenced. Need I remind them that the then Governor Elechi of PDP once denied Mohammed Buhari and APC the use of the Abakaliki sports stadium for political rallies in 2014. Though Buhari and co moved down to the People's Club arena, it still didn't stop Buhari's victory in the general elections in 2015 and the decimation of the PDP."

Also, the governorship candidate of the Labour Party in the state, Chief Splendour Oko-Eze, condemned the development and warned that the situation could degenerate into anti-democratic tendencies with negative consequences on the state.

In an open letter on Wednesday, Oko-Eze said, "I wrote this open letter to register my displeasure on the manner the Ebonyi State Government is maltreating opposition in the State. This law passed by the State House of Assembly prohibiting billboards and posters from candidates contesting elections is a deliberate attempt to stifle opposition parties in Ebonyi State. Where do you expect opposition parties' candidates to get #150m from just to be allowed to erect billboards and posters? This is autocratic leadership going on in our dear State.

"Opposition is not a crime anywhere in the world. It is the beauty of democracy. It acts like a watch dog to the government in power so as to make sure that the dividends of democracy get to the people. Here in Ebonyi State opposition parties and candidates are treated like criminals. This is not acceptable and it has to stop going forward. If the government does not want to be criticised or have candidates from opposition parties contest against the candidates from the ruling party then the government must show scorecards and performance. It is only the achievements of the government that will make the electorates to Re-elect anyone in power for the second tenure not the attacks on opposition parties and their candidates."

"How much did the Governor Chief Francis Ogbonnaya Nwifuru and wife pay for all their billboards scattered all over the States? Or does it mean the law is just made for opposition parties and her candidates? The House of Assembly Members must take cognisance of the fact that they were elected or selected to make laws that will benefit the people and not the ones that will intimidate and extort money from them," he added.

On his part, a social media critic and public affairs analyst, Chika Nwoba, said the current Ebonyi State government under Francis Nwifuru's watch was inadvertantly inviting crisis by some of its anti-democratic policies in the state.

A post he made on his Facebook Page, on Wednesday, read, "Political war in Ebonyi is close, and it's sponsored by Ebonyi State Government. I see it that no poster or billboard will stand anywhere in the state, not even the ones of the APC because this anti democratic policy is only for the opposition.

"Nobody will pay a dime for campaign posters or billboards to them. If they tear posters and billboards of the opposition, their own will also go down. This state of emergency Ebonyi Governor hungers for will definitely come upon him. He has laid the foundation. No party will mount billboards either."

Efforts to get the Public Relations Officer of the Ebonyi State House Assembly, Sylvester Egede, for comment on the development, proved abortive.

Calls made to his phone were not picked. Messages sent to his mobile by our correspondent were yet to be responded to as of the time of filing this report, on Wednesday.

Recall the Deputy Chief Whip of the Ebonyi State House of Assembly, Hon. Arinze Lucas Chukwu at the Assembly's planery, on Wednesday, moved a motion banning what be described as indiscriminate pasting of political posters and billboards in the capital territory.

The Ezza Umuhuali and Izzo autonomous communities in Ebonyi have adopted Gov. Francis Nwifuru and other All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates for the 2027 general elections.

The communities announced their decision during a sensitisation exercise organised by the Ezza Progressive Initiative across the communities on Tuesday, pledging to support APC candidates from the presidential to the state assembly elections.

The communities attributed their decision to the administration's achievements in peace and security, infrastructure development and inclusiveness, despite their failure to deliver bloc votes to the governor in the previous election.

Speaking during the exercise, Hon. Alphonsus Nwali, deputy chairman of the APC in Ebonyi state, said the initiative was reaching out to Ezza people across the state to sensitise them on the need to support Nwifuru and other APC candidates in the forthcoming elections.

Nwali said the reception by the communities was encouraging, adding that their leaders had pledged to disseminate the message to various groups in their areas.

Similarly, a former member of the House of Representatives for Ezza/Ikwo Federal Constituency, Chief Lazarus Nweru Ogbe, said the sensitisation was necessary to prevent the division of votes among political parties, which he said had not benefited the people in previous elections.

Ogbe said Nwifuru had demonstrated commitment to the Ezza people through appointments, infrastructure development and other government initiatives, adding that the community intended to reciprocate the gesture by delivering bloc votes to the APC in 2027.

He urged eligible voters to obtain their Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) and participate actively in the elections, stressing the need for grassroots mobilisation to ensure that the party secures support across the constituency.

Mr Solomon Mweke, President-General of the Ezza Umuhuali Town Development Union, said the community had held a similar meeting on Aug. 7, 2026, to promote support for APC candidates across all levels of government.

Mweke listed peace and security, political appointments, road construction and the provision of a 300KVA transformer among the benefits he attributed to the administration, saying the community was prepared to support the governor for a second term.

Also speaking, the state Commissioner of the Ministry of Special Projects, Dr. Ngozi Obichukwu, expressed support for the APC, saying members of the community had been mobilising voters through house-to-house campaigns and meetings in village squares.

While at Izzo Autonomous Community, Mr Charles Chukuma, President-General of the Izzo Autonomous Community, affirmed that the community would support Nwifuru and other APC candidates in the 2027 elections, citing the administration's interventions in the area, such as the creation of Izzo Autonomous, which the previous government has ignored as a reason for its decision.

Some members of the Ezza Progressive Initiative delegation include Barr. Timothy Odah, Chief Moses Ogodo Ali Nome, Prof. Humphrey Nwoabashi, Hon. Chinedu Awo, Hon. Emeka Nwonu, amongst others.

Stakeholders from Ezza Ntezi in Ebonyi State have pledged total support for Gov. Francis Nwifuru’s re-election bid and other All Progressives Congress (APC) candidates in the 2027 general elections.

The stakeholders made the pledge during a sensitisation meeting organised at Hilltop Methodist Church, Umuezeoka, Ezza, where an APC delegation visited the community to canvass support for the governor and other party candidates.

The Deputy Chief Whip of the Ebonyi House of Assembly, Mr Chukwu Arinze Lucas, who represents Ishielu South Constituency, said the gathering was aimed at familiarising the people with the party’s activities ahead of the 2027 elections.

Lucas said Ezza Ntezi had consistently supported the APC in previous elections and assured that the community would maintain its position in the forthcoming polls.

“We are voting APC. We are going to vote for all APC candidates, from the president to the governor, senators, House of Representatives members and House of Assembly candidates,” he said.

Similarly, the State Deputy Chairman of the APC, Hon. Chinedu Alphonsus Nwali, said the visit was part of the party’s ongoing engagement with communities across Ebonyi to encourage support for Nwifuru and other APC candidates.

He said the community had requested the creation of an autonomous community and the construction of access roads, adding that the requests would be presented to the governor for consideration.

Chief Ogodo Ali Nome, Special Assistant to the Governor on Agriculture and immediate past Chairman of Ezza North Local Government Area, said the community’s support for the APC was influenced by what he described as the administration’s efforts to develop road infrastructure, create autonomous communities and recognise the identity of the Ezza people.

The Vice Chairman of the community’s Town Union, Mr Chijoike Ali, emphasised that the stakeholders had resolved to support all APC candidates, citing unity among the people as a major factor in their previous voting pattern.

Ali, however, appealed to the state government to create an autonomous community for the people, construct access roads to ease the transportation of agricultural produce to markets and facilitate the installation of a transformer to improve electricity supply.

Another community representative, Chief Chukwuma Usulor, said the people appreciated the governor for restoring peace in the area through the recognition of their traditional institution, adding that the community was prepared to reciprocate the gesture through its support for the APC.

The sensitisation delegation said its engagements would continue across the state, amid expectations among some stakeholders that political power would rotate to the Ebonyi Central Senatorial District after Nwifuru’s tenure, with Ezza being mentioned as a possible beneficiary.

The luxurious edifice which boasts of lodging, conference, business and general relaxation facilities was constructed through members' efforts, engineered by the tactical acumen of its leadership, spearheaded by its President, Hon Charles Akpu--Enika (The Game Changer)

The efforts of the club's Board of Trustees, Hon. Richard Idiike, its Forum of Patron and Patronesses Coordinated by Chief Dad Enigwe and the entire members would not go unmentioned as the conquering spirit and decorous resolve to attain great heights are there for all to see .

The unveiling ceremony was preceded by the second edition of the club's Health/ Awareness Walk with the edifice consecreted with a powerful Christain service conducted by Rev. Fr. Maximus Obododike.

Chief Uguru while performing the unveiling, commended the leadership and members of the club for their commitment, cooperation and collective efforts in bringing the remarkable project to fruition.

Akpu--Enika, the Immediate Past Commissioner for Youth Development and Sports in Ebonyi, said the project reflects the club's determination to promote brotherhood.and strengthen professional relationships.

Idiike who is the Commissioner for Capital Territory Development in Ebonyi, also hailed the second edition of the club's health Walk which added glamour to the unveiling in the wake of the members' show of grit and physicality.

Hon. Victor Nwoke, The Member representing Abakaliki North at the Ebonyj State House of Assembly and a Member of the club, said the club was poised to achieve greater things and assured its leadership of stakeholders' support.

The Chairman of Abakaliki Local Government Area (LGA) Hon. Chidi Aloh, commended the members for their support to the leadership, urging the managers of the edifice to put it into effective use.

Aloh, who is the Vice President of the Club noted that the Health Walk organised by the club was a testament of the commitment in ensuring its members keep fit and live healthy.

Deacon Obinna Nwachukwu, a Leader in the Club and Former Chairman of Ishielu LGA, noted that club's light will keep shinning as it treaded on paths where others fear to thread and ultimately achieving what others which have existed before it, have not achieved.

The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) members have been admonished that the conclusion of their three-week orientation exercise is not an end in itself but the beginning of their year of service.

The NYSC Ebonyj State Coordinator, Mrs Malgwi Maidariya gave the admonition at the end of the oriention course for the 2026 Batch C, Stream 1 corps members posted to the state, at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Afikpo.

Maidariya said that the conclusion of the exercise also marked the beginning of their learning, sacrifice, and national responsibility.

The state director noted that the orientation camp has prepared the corps members to embrace the challenges and opportunities which lie ahead as they contribute to the development of Nigeria.

"Throughout your stay in camp, you have demonstrated discipline, resilience, teamwork, and enthusiasm in participating in the various camp activities.

"You have also had opportunities to interact with fellow Nigerians from different cultural, religious, and social backgrounds which have strengthened your appreciation of the nation's diversity and importance of peaceful coexistence.

"As you proceed to your respective Places of Primary Assignment, I urge you to uphold the ideals of the NYSC scheme, particularly patriotism, integrity, selfless service, discipline, and respect for constituted authority."

She urged the corps members to be willing to learn from their host communities, respect their customs, and identify with their aspirations.

No less than one week after students of the Ebonyi State University endorsed the governorship Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party for the Saturday, February 6, 2027 election, Chief Ifeanyi Odii, handlers of Governor Francis Nwifuru have also allegedly pushed him to seek endorsements from support groups student bodies in the state, investigation has revealed.

Members of the Ebonyi State University Medical Students Association (EBSUMSA), had during their homecoming/reunion colloquium, declared their support for Odii ahead of the 2027 gubernatorial polls, saying that the PDP standard bearer had the capacity to turn their fortunes around if elected governor.

Represented at the event by Chief Moses Idika, the Director of Media and Publicity of Anyi G’ Emeya, Odii promised to transform the state university, to a centre of excellence if elected the governor.

He further said he will expand access to medical education, improve professional competence, and develop a sustainable pipeline of skilled personnel for the state health system.

"Consider our medical professionals who receive their education in Nigeria and, subsequently, practise abroad. Many encounter a striking difference between the working environments they leave behind and the systems into which they enter. They often discover better-equipped facilities, more reliable infrastructure, stronger institutional support, and more conducive conditions for professional growth.

“Yet, there is no magic behind the success of these systems. Progress begins when those entrusted with authority, at every level, commit themselves to doing things properly, making responsible decisions, and putting the public interest first. Our vision is to transform Ebonyi State University into a true centre of excellence, recognised for quality education, research, innovation, and professional development," Odii had said.

Our correspondent gathered that one week after the students wholeheartedly gave their endorsement to the PDP governorship hopeful, the state government allegedly summoned all the student leaders in the and mandated them to reject the endorsement.

A political analyst in the state, who pleaded anonymity for fear of being attacked, said the Ebonyi State governor was unsettled with the students' endorsement of Odii, adding, "it was a case of biting the finger that feeds you".

He said, "What is going on in Ebonyi politics is both petty and primitive. This is not how politics should be played and, is played in other states in Nigeria. I think politics and or election should be a process through which the people freely elect their representatives or leaders.

"Why then is our own way of playing politics different here?. Student groups gathered, accessed the candidates and then decided to genuinely endorse a particular candidate because they believe that candidate will do better if given the chance. So, why would any democratic leader summon the same students and direct them to reject such endorsement? Is this not anti-democracy? Is this not autocracy? Anyways, we are watching to see how it all plays out".

A Tinubu Support Organisation in the state, on Monday, endorsed Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, for a second term, vowing to mobilise grassroots support for his re-election.

The political enthusiast queried the hurried endorsement of the governor by the group no less than a week after a student body gave their backing to the PDP governorship candidate.

He alleged, that "The ongoing endorsements spree by the governor were done to doused the one already done by the student body on his major challenger, Odii. For us, these are forced or procured endorsements -- they are fake endorsements, because they were not done by the people willingly. Those doing these endorsements for the reelection the governor are not doing so with their genuine intentions."

The Tinubu Support Organisation (TSO), South-East Zone, has endorsed Gov. Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi for a second term in office ahead of the 2027 governorship election.

The organisation announced its endorsement at a rally held at the All Progressives Congress (APC) State Secretariat in Abakaliki on Monday, with its South-East Zonal Coordinator, Chief Celestine Kojos Ekechi, leading the delegation.

Ekechi said the endorsement was based on what he described as the governor’s achievements in infrastructure, education, healthcare, agriculture and youth and women empowerment under his administration’s “Charter of Needs” policy.

He said the organisation, which operates across polling units, wards and the 13 Local Government Areas of Ebonyi, was prepared to mobilise support for Nwifuru and other APC candidates in the 2027 general elections.

According to him, the TSO will organise campaigns, mobilise voters and participate in rallies in support of the governor during the electioneering period.

He also appealed to the state APC leadership to formally recognise the organisation as a party support group and provide operational assistance, including funding and vehicles, to facilitate its activities.

He further requested that qualified TSO members be included in the governor’s campaign organisation, citing their experience and commitment to the party.

The coordinator said members of the organisation had worked for the governor’s election in 2023 but had yet to benefit from appointments or empowerment programmes by the state government. He appealed to the party leadership to consider the concerns of members, including the state coordinator, Hon. Enyiukpo Samuel Chukwudi.

He also urged the party chairman to remind Governor Nwifuru to respond to an address presented to him during a TSO South-East zonal courtesy visit in April 2026, when the organisation said it adopted him as its preferred APC candidate for the 2027 governorship election.

Responding, the Ebonyi APC Chairman, Chief Stanley Okoro Emegha, said the party was aware of the concerns raised and that developments within the government and party were taking place gradually.

“Everything is on a gradual process. We know it very well, and a lot of things are changing,” Emegha said, adding that improvements should be expected progressively rather than all at once.

He described the support group as an important part of the party’s structure, saying, “What you are doing now, you are the strength of the party. The party cannot exist without you.”

Emegha said the TSO’s visit had drawn his attention to the issues raised and urged members to remain engaged with the party.

The TSO, founded on June 22, 2022, by its Director-General, Hon. Alhaji Aminu Suleiman, is an APC support organisation established to promote President Bola Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda and support the party’s candidates.

Stakeholders at the Ebonyi State Peoples’ Political and Economic Summit 2026 have called for a change of leadership in the state ahead of the 2027 general elections, urging voters to prioritise accountability, competence and good governance.

The position was contained in a communiqué issued at the end of the summit, which took place on Monday in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital.

The gathering brought together representatives of political parties, community leaders, academics, civil society organisations, professionals, farmers, artisanal miners, youth and women groups, traders, and members of the diaspora.

Political figures at the event included representatives of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, the governorship candidate of the National Democratic Coalition (NDC), and leaders of the Labour Party, among others.

Reflecting on the history of Ebonyi State, the stakeholders recalled the 39-year struggle that culminated in its creation on October 1, 1996, from parts of the former Abia and Enugu states.

They described the sacrifices of the founding generation as a collective effort to establish a prosperous state where residents would no longer suffer marginalisation.

However, the participants expressed concern over what they described as a critical turning point in the state's development, citing widespread poverty, alleged poor governance, declining infrastructure and threats to social cohesion as issues requiring urgent attention.

The summit reaffirmed its commitment to constitutional democracy, urging political parties and their supporters to conduct their activities in accordance with the 1999 Constitution, as amended.

On the question of a second term for incumbent officeholders, the stakeholders argued that re-election should not be regarded as an automatic right but as a mandate that must be earned through demonstrable performance.

Referring to Sections 179 and 180 of the Constitution, they maintained that incumbent governors must satisfy the same constitutional and electoral requirements as other candidates seeking office.

They further insisted that the 2027 governorship election should be decided on the basis of competence, integrity and clearly defined policy proposals, rather than incumbency, political influence, sectional considerations or financial inducements.

The stakeholders also condemned what they described as the politics of fear and intimidation, calling for an end to threats and harassment directed at opposition politicians, civil society organisations and journalists.

They urged relevant authorities to ensure equal protection for all political parties and candidates, stressing the importance of a peaceful and credible electoral process.

The communiqué also called on voters to hold political aspirants accountable by scrutinising their character, competence, transparency and records of public service.

Based on presentations and discussions at the summit, the participants concluded that the incumbent administration had not sufficiently demonstrated its case for a renewed mandate.

Consequently, the stakeholders identified the PDP governorship candidate, Chief Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, as their preferred alternative for the 2027 governorship election, citing his track record and the need for a different approach to leadership in the state.

As part of efforts to promote issue-based politics, the summit adopted a six-point minimum policy agenda for governorship candidates. The agenda covers fiscal transparency, economic diversification, agricultural and mining reforms, human capital development, improvement of the business environment, and infrastructure development.

On fiscal governance, the stakeholders called for the timely publication of budgets, the establishment of an Open Treasury Portal, a minimum of 70 per cent capital budget performance, and the digitisation of internally generated revenue.

To stimulate economic growth, they proposed the establishment of three agro-processing zones tailored to the state's comparative advantages: rice processing in Abakaliki, cassava and yam processing in Afikpo, and salt production and aquaculture in Uburu.

They also advocated the revival of the Ebonyi Fertiliser Plant as part of broader efforts to strengthen agriculture, create jobs and diversify the state's economy.

The communiqué, drafted by Mr Moses Idika and read by Mr Emmanuel Oshim, Chief Executive Officer of Churichy Investment Nigeria Ltd., called on political actors to place the collective interest of Ebonyi State above personal ambitions.

The stakeholders warned against sacrificing the state's future in the pursuit of political power, insisting that the 2027 elections should provide an opportunity to advance responsible leadership, economic development and accountable governance.

Global Fund GC7 Integrated Community Led Monitoring (CLM) project, has advocated for coordinated synergy between governments, development partners, healthcare providers in tackling the menace posed by HIV/AIDs, tuberculosis and malaria.

The Global Fund GC7 Integrated Community-Led Monitoring (I-CLM) Grant, is implemented by the ATM Networks—the Civil Society for the Eradication of Tuberculosis in Nigeria (TB Network), the Network of People Living with HIV/AIDS in Nigeria (NEPWHAN), and the Association of Civil Society Organizations on Malaria, Immunization and Nutrition (ACOMIN), in collaboration with the Institute of Human Virology Nigeria (IHVN), covering all the 36 States of the Federation and the Federal Capital Territory (FCT).

Briefing newsmen on behalf of implementing partners on Thursday in Abakaliki the Ebonyi state capital, the State Programme Officer for TB Network Mr Okemini Ogbonna, identified poverty, inadequate healthcare access, stigma, discrimination, and out-of-pocket health expenses as factors contributing to poor health outcomes

According to him, "Addressing these challenges requires coordinated action by government, communities, civil society organizations (CSOs), development partners, healthcare providers, the private sector, and the media to promote equitable access to quality healthcare"

He said that Nigeria faces a significant burden of tuberculosis (TB), HIV/AIDS, and malaria, with access barriers such as transportation costs, long distance to health facilities, further discourage timely health-seeking behaviour, particularly among vulnerable populations.

Okemini urged government at all levels, development partners, the private sector, civil society organizations, community leaders, the media to:expand health insurance coverage to improve access to essential health services.0

"The project employs a community-led approach to identify barriers to healthcare access and service delivery, including stigma, discrimination, gender-related inequalities, and infrastructure gaps"

"It empowers communities to prioritize their health needs, mobilize resources, promote accountability, and advocate for improved services"

The Programme Officer said that the I-CLM initiative, has recorded significant achievements in areas of community resource mobilization, health infrastructure improvement, service delivery, advocacy, and community participation, complementing the Ebonyi State Government’s People’s Charter of Needs mantra on health.

Speaking against the backdrop of Gender Based Violence (GBV), including domestic abuse, rape, sexual assault, forced marriage and gemale genital mutilation, Okemini posited that it remains a serious public health and human rights concern.

The TB Network calls on all stakeholders and citizens to reject all forms of GBV, protect the rights and dignity of affected persons, support survivors, and work collectively towards safer and more inclusive communities.

In his contribution, the Executive Secretary of Ebonyi State Primary Healthcare Development Agency (EBSPHCDA) Dr Emeka Ovuoba Philip, restated that the state government was putting modalities in place to make its Primary Healthcare Centers (PHCs) a center of excellence.

He opined, "Our PHCs will soon become a place where people can access healthcare services with ease"

Ovuoba disclosed that the state government has granted approval for the employment of health workers on various cadres across the 13 local government areas of the state.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi has dismissed a purported resignation letter circulating online in the name of Ogbuefi Ifeuwabundidi Zacchaeus, describing it as false and worthless.

The party said Zacchaeus was never its elected state secretary and did not participate in the state congress that produced the party's leadership.

The PDP State Publicity Secretary, Prince Darlington Onwe, stated this in a statement issued on Monday in Abakaliki.

Onwe said the purported resignation letter falsely claimed that Zacchaeus held a substantive position as state secretary of the party.

“He was never the elected State Secretary of our party. The letter claims a 'substantive' office conferred by a State Congress, yet he never participated in our State Congress and no such mandate was ever given to him by the delegates of the PDP in Ebonyi State,” he said.

He argued that a person could not resign from a position he never held, citing the legal principle Nemo dat quod non habet, which means that no one can give what they do not have.

The party spokesperson identified Comr. Henry Ngonu as the current state secretary of the PDP in Ebonyi, under the leadership of Hon. Igwe Chukwuma, the state chairman.

Onwe also questioned the motive behind the purported resignation letter, alleging that its reference to a campaign for Gov. Francis Nwifuru's re-election suggested a political agenda.

“Party administration does not end in an audition for another camp. This is a political errand, not a resignation,” he said.

He urged party members, leaders, stakeholders, the media and the general public to disregard the letter.

The PDP spokesperson further warned individuals allegedly involved in impersonating party officials or circulating false information that the party reserved the right to pursue legal and administrative action against them.

“To the political jobbers and hatchetmen who manufacture recycled falsehoods to distract our victorious march, your playbook is decoded,” he said.

The party, however, did not provide further details on whether any formal complaint had been lodged with law enforcement authorities over the purported letter.

There is palpable fear and apprehension in Ihetutu, Ishiagu community, Ivo Local Government Area of Ebonyi State following the killing of two youths allegedly by soldiers.

The deceased; Chibuike Elema, 18, and Obinna Joshua, 19, were killed by soldiers attached to a mining company in the area.

They were reportedly shot dead around midday Sunday at the mining site operated by Palladium Mining Company after they allegedly refused to give money to the soldiers stationed at the facility for security.

The incident sparked outrage among residents, particularly women and community leaders, who are demanding a thorough investigation into the killings and an end to what they described as the harsh treatment of their children by the mining company and security personnel.

There was atmosphere of grief and tension on Sunday evening when the reporter visited the community.

Narrating the circumstances surrounding his son's death, Mr Donatus Okoro, father of Chibuike Elema, said his 18-year-old son was called from home on Sunday morning to join other workers at the mining site only for him to be killed.

He said that, according to eyewitness accounts, the youths were returning from work when soldiers attached to Palladium Mining Company allegedly called them to pay money.

The grieving father, who struggled to contain his tears, alleged that the soldiers opened fire on the youths after they explained that they had no money to give them.

“My son was called from the house this morning to come and join them for Sunday work. While coming back along the road, according to people who witnessed what happened, the soldiers attached to a mining company called Palladium asked them to settle them.

“But they told the soldiers that they were not with anything. The soldiers raised their guns and shot them in the head,” he alleged.

Okoro called on the Ebonyi State Government to investigate the incident and ensure that those responsible for his son's death were brought to justice.

Obinna Joshua, the second victim, was identified as the son of the serving councillor representing Ihetutu community in Ivo Local Government Area. He was reportedly a second-year undergraduate student.

The killing of the two young men has raised concerns among residents over the use of lethal force at the mining site, with community leaders insisting that no alleged offence could justify taking the lives of the youths without due process.

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees of Ihetutu Community Development Union, Prince Fabian Chukwu, condemned the incident and called on the state government to intervene.

Chukwu, who described the killings as unacceptable, said security personnel attached to a mining company had no justification to kill the youths, even if they were suspected of committing an offence.

“We are not happy. For a miner working in our community to authorise security personnel to kill our youths is something we cannot accept,” he said.

“Even if the youths had come to take anything from the company, the appropriate thing would have been to arrest them and hand them over to the police, not to kill them. They were not authorised to kill a vibrant youth like that,” he added.

The community leader said Palladium had operated in the area for about five years or more, explaining that the company initially worked as a technical partner to another mining firm before taking over its operations.

He alleged that palladium Minig Company is owned by Victor Nwokeji who displaced his partner Gexpam Mining Company that brought him to partner with Gexpam in a lead-zinc concession originally owned by Gexpam at Ihietutu and took over the mining site.

The trustee chairman went further to say Palladium is currently running the mining site as Ambertone Logistics Ltd another arm of Palladium. Mining company.

According to him, tensions between the community and the company became more pronounced after the change in ownership or operational control.

He appealed to the state government to urgently intervene to prevent the incident from escalating, while urging the bereaved families to remain calm as the community seeks justice.

Also speaking, Mrs Eze Ifeyinwa, a former secretary of the women’s wing of the Ihetutu Community Development Union, accused the mining company and security personnel of treating residents unfairly.

She called on the government to investigate the killings and review the continued operations of the company and the soldiers in the community.

“They are treating our children as if they are thieves. We want them to go. The government should stop both the mining company and the army from operating in Ihetutu. They are treating us like slaves, and it has never been like this before,” she said.

Questioning the circumstances that led to the deaths, Ifeyinwa said Sunday was a normal working day for male miners in the community, contrary to any suggestion that the youths had committed an offence simply by going to the mining site.

“What crime have these children committed by going to the site today? Men work on Sundays; it is only women who do not go to the mining site on Sundays,” she said.

The incident has left the community grappling with the loss of two young men whose deaths have devastated their families and raised fresh questions about the conduct of security personnel deployed to protect mining operations.

Residents are now calling on the Ebonyi State Government and relevant security authorities to conduct an impartial investigation, establish the circumstances surrounding the shootings and ensure that anyone found culpable is held accountable.

As the bereaved families mourn their loved ones, the community insists that justice must be served and that measures must be taken to prevent a recurrence of such a tragedy.

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governorship candidate in Ebonyi, Chief Ifeanyi-Chukwuma Odii, has promised to improve healthcare delivery and medical education if elected governor in 2027.

Odii, represented by Mr Moses Idika, National PDP ex officio, made the promise on Friday while addressing the Ebonyi State University Medical Students’ Association (EBSUMSA) Homecoming and Reunion Colloquium in Abakaliki.

Our correspondent reports that the event marked the first alumni homecoming of the university’s medical students since the establishment of Ebonyi State University (EBSU) 35 years ago.

The colloquium was organised by EBSUMSA with the theme: “Healing Through the Decades: 35 Years of Care.”

Odii said his administration would prioritise investment in medical education, healthcare infrastructure, research and the welfare of healthcare workers to strengthen the state's healthcare system.

He said he would work towards transforming EBSU into a centre of excellence in education, research, innovation and professional development.

The PDP candidate pledged to strengthen primary healthcare centres, general hospitals and the EBSU Teaching Hospital, stressing that effective healthcare delivery required functional referral systems and well-equipped facilities at all levels.

Double-Chief declared that his candidacy is strictly driven by an unyielding dedication to public service, promising to address the longstanding gaps in basic infrastructure and human capital development that have affected the constituency.

"Our mission is clear: to reactivate stalled development and make our constituency work for everyone," Egah proclaimed to the roaring crowd. His legislative agenda prioritizes the comprehensive revitalization of public primary schools, modernizing primary health centers, expanding clean water systems, extending rural electrification networks, and constructing durable access roads to link local agricultural communities.

With the flag-off complete, the campaign has launched into full gear across every ward in Ezza North and Ishielu.

The Ezza people of Ukawu and Ishinkwo communities in Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi have called on Dr Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in the 2027 election, to apologise for declaring his intention to contest the governorship election.

The call was made during a sensitisation visit by members of the Ezza Progressive Initiative for Greater Height to the communities at Central Primary School, Amankpuma, Ukawu. The gathering focused on mobilising support for Gov. Francis Nwifuru's re-election and other candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC) in 2027.

The Ezza people in the communities, which had experienced insecurity, expressed support for Nwifuru, describing him as a peacemaker whose administration had contributed to restoring peace and promoting development across Ezza communities.

Comrade Ede Uchechukwu Jacob, a former APC official and indigene of Amankpuma, said the visit was aimed at sensitising the Ezza people living in the southern part of the state on the need to support Nwifuru and other APC candidates.

“We are Ezza people, though living in the South. Our brothers from the central and northern parts of the state have come to sensitise our people on the need to support His Excellency in his re-election bid,” he said.

Jacob argued that the state's zoning arrangement should be respected, insisting that the governorship should remain in the northern zone before rotating to the central and southern zones.

He described Odii's ambition as contrary to the principle of equity and justice, urging him to reconsider his position. “My sincere advice to him is that he should come back home and apologise to us for trying to smear our names,” he said.

He added that the people of Ezza in Ukawu and Ishinkwo were prepared to support Nwifuru's re-election, stressing that the decision reflected their commitment to the position taken by their leaders and stakeholders.

Barrister Timothy Nwali Odah, a former Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice during Gov. Martin Elechi's administration, expressed appreciation to Gov. Francis Nwifuru for his administration's efforts in restoring peace and promoting development in Ezza communities. He pledged 100 per cent votes for the governor's re-election.

He also commended the Ezza stakeholders for drawing the governor's attention to issues affecting the communities especially the collapsed bridge in the area. Odah further praised Nwifuru's peace initiative in Abaomege and Ishinkwo, saying Ezza people in Ukawu, Ishinkwo and other communities would mobilise support for the governor's re-election.

"It's unheard of for the cousin of the immediate past governor of Ebonyi State to seek the same position," he said.

Despite the fact that he was in the opposition hitherto, he noted, having seen the works of the current administration, he's fully in support of Gov Nwifuru's reelection and pledged to mobilize for him.

On the import of the visit, the Deputy Chairman of the APC in Ebonyi, Hon. Chinedu Alphonsus Nwali, said the initiative was part of a broader mobilisation campaign across Ezza communities to secure support for Nwifuru and all APC candidates in the 2027 general elections. He said the movement was driven by community stakeholders rather than government funding.

Nwali cited the creation of autonomous communities and other initiatives by the administration as reasons for the group's support, adding that Ezza leaders had endorsed Nwifuru at their ancestral home and were extending the message to their people across the state.

Similarly, Hon. Chris Usulor said the administration had delivered benefits to the Ezza people through scholarships and road infrastructure. He urged the people to reciprocate the government's efforts by supporting the governor and other APC candidates at the polls.

Speaking, Rt. Hon. Chief Lazarus Nweru Ogbee confirmed that Ezza stakeholders had resolved to support APC candidates from the presidency and National Assembly to the governorship and State House of Assembly. He attributed the decision to what he described as the administration's achievements in education, infrastructure, pension payments and peacebuilding.

Ogbee said the establishment of a tertiary institution in Ezza land and the restoration of peace in communities across the state were among the reasons for the support.

The immediate past chairman of Ezza North LGA and current special adviser to the Governor on Agriculture, Chief Moses Ogodo-Ali, said the Ezza people were committed to the zoning arrangement adopted at the creation of Ebonyi State.

He argued that respecting the arrangement would strengthen political understanding among the state's constituent groups and sustain the expectation that power would rotate to Ezza after the northern zone.

However, representatives of the communities who spoke including the Town Union Presidents of Ukawu and Ishinkwo communities appealed for greater political inclusion, citing what they described as a lack of state appointments despite their population and voting strength.

They further called for the rehabilitation of the road linking Ishinkwo and Amudo, which they said was important for access to farmlands and the transportation of agricultural produce.

The Ezza Nation has continued to mobilise support for Nwifuru's re-election, with its stakeholders expressing the hope that the governorship would be handed to Ezza after his second tenure, if re-elected.

The House of Representatives candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for Afikpo/Edda Federal Constituency, Chief Agwu Ama Agwu, has challenged voters in Ebonyi State to prioritise performance, integrity and credible development plans over political party affiliations in the 2027 general elections.

Agwu, a chartered accountant, entrepreneur and business analyst, said voters should not cast their ballots merely because a candidate belongs to the All Progressives Congress (APC), NDC, Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) or any other political party, but should carefully examine what each contender offers and the capacity to deliver on campaign promises.

Speaking with journalists in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, the NDC candidate maintained that elections should provide an opportunity for citizens to assess leadership, demand accountability and choose representatives capable of addressing their most pressing challenges.

He said the people of Afikpo and Edda deserved representation that would prioritise electricity, potable water, accessible healthcare, functional schools, improved roads and sustainable employment opportunities for young people.

According to him, his decision to contest the House of Representatives seat is driven by what he described as persistent complaints from constituents about inadequate infrastructure, unemployment and the perceived absence of effective representation.

Agwu said his emergence as the NDC candidate was not a personal achievement but a responsibility to the people, whom he described as the ultimate beneficiaries and owners of the democratic mandate.

He expressed gratitude to God, the party's leadership and members, as well as market women, youths, farmers, students and community elders who, he said, encouraged him to join the race.

The candidate also rejected the suggestion that his ambition was sponsored by powerful political figures in Abakaliki or Abuja, insisting that his primary allegiance would be to the electorate rather than an individual or political group.

"My people are my godfather. I have no one to settle and no cabal to service. My only debt is to the people," he said, arguing that elected representatives must remain accountable to the citizens whose votes brought them into office.

Agwu pledged that, if elected, he would return to Afikpo and Edda every three months to hold town hall meetings, report on his activities in the National Assembly and listen to constituents' concerns.

He said the proposed quarterly engagements would provide an opportunity for residents to question him directly, assess his performance and demand explanations on constituency projects, legislative activities and efforts to attract federal interventions.

The NDC candidate further promised to advocate vigorously for electricity, roads, water supply, education and other essential services, with particular emphasis on the Amasiri Power Project, which he identified as a major concern for the constituency.

He said his approach to representation would go beyond distributing food items or small cash gifts during election periods, arguing that the office of a federal lawmaker carries responsibilities in legislation, oversight, budget advocacy and attracting development projects to constituents.

On economic empowerment, Agwu pledged that 1,000 women and youths would benefit from business grants and working tools within his first two years in office. He said the proposed programme would operate transparently and would not be restricted to members of his political party.

He also promised free medical outreaches across the constituency's 24 wards, scholarships for indigent but academically gifted students, and support for farmers.

He added that he would pursue the enrolment of 2,000 indigent women and elderly residents in a health insurance programme to improve access to medical services.

On healthcare infrastructure, Agwu said he would seek federal intervention to improve primary healthcare centres in Afikpo and Edda, use his oversight responsibilities to monitor health allocations and explore partnerships with non-governmental organisations, the Niger Delta Development Commission and international donors to equip at least six primary healthcare centres annually.

He maintained that such initiatives would require sustained engagement with relevant federal agencies and development partners, adding that he intended to use his position, if elected, to ensure that the constituency received greater attention in national development programmes.

Explaining why he believes representation has not adequately addressed the needs of the constituency, Agwu identified political godfatherism, the alleged disconnect between elected representatives and their constituents, insufficient understanding of legislative responsibilities, and weak mechanisms for public accountability as factors contributing to the problem.

He argued that representatives who depend heavily on political patrons could face competing obligations that undermine their responsiveness to voters, adding that regular town hall meetings, public reporting and transparent disclosure of constituency projects would help strengthen democratic accountability.

Agwu also urged his opponents to conduct issue-based campaigns, warning that political rivalry should not destroy the longstanding relationships among the people of Afikpo and Edda.

"We are all sons and daughters of Afikpo and Edda who want to serve. This election is not a war. It is a contest of ideas. It is not about who abuses the most, but who has the best plan for our people," he said.

He challenged other candidates to present verifiable records of their contributions to education, healthcare and youth empowerment, including assistance provided to constituents outside election periods.

He added that the outcome of the election should not affect the unity of the communities, promising to congratulate and support any opponent chosen by the electorate.

Addressing the wider political situation in Ebonyi State, Agwu said Governor Francis Nwifuru's performance should be assessed on its merits rather than through party loyalty alone.

He maintained that the governor's possible second-term bid should be determined by voters' assessment of his record on infrastructure, healthcare, education, employment, peace and workers' welfare.

The NDC candidate also expressed reservations about the reported threat to remove local government chairmen who fail to deliver their areas to the APC in the 2027 elections.

He argued that elected council officials should be assessed on their performance in office and that political disagreements should not be used as a basis for removing them.

The legal position, he said, should be determined in accordance with the Constitution, applicable state laws and judicial decisions.

Agwu concluded by urging voters to resist inducements and make decisions based on their long-term interests, insisting that the 2027 election should be an opportunity to demand practical solutions rather than another cycle of unfulfilled promises.

"Don't sell your future for N2,000. Don't vote because someone ordered you. Vote because your child deserves light to read, your mother deserves a hospital that works and your son deserves a job that pays. Vote for service, vote for integrity and vote for the people," he said.

.....AGAINST PRESENT ADMINISTRATION'S RECORD

As campaigns activities for the 2027 elections inch closer, a cross-section of Ebonyi State's civic, media and electoral community has challenged residents to ask hard questions of anyone seeking the governorship, and to value demonstrated ability over polished speeches.

The challenge was issued at a stakeholders' forum convened by the Centre for Media and Dialogue Initiative (CMDI) at Monabliss Hotels and Suites, Abakaliki, under the theme "Beyond the Manifesto: Ebonyi 2027 Election and the People's Interrogation of Next Leadership." CMDI Programme Director Eze Chikodiri Igwe said the meeting was designed as an impartial space with no endorsement of any party. Comrade Uchenna Inya, Chairman of the NUJ Correspondents' Chapel, said journalists would insist on specifics from aspirants, while Mrs Esther Idam of INEC urged residents to collect their voter cards, question unverified online stories and shun violence.

Speaking on behalf of the State Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), the Publicity Secretary said the party welcomed the invitation to be judged, because the yardstick Ebonyi people were now being urged to use was one its past leaders had already met. He recalled that Dr. Sam Egwu opened the door to learning through free and compulsory schooling and invested in the skills of the state's people. Chief Martin Elechi, he said, joined communities together with the Unity Bridges, reshaped urban centres, extended roads to rural settlements and nurtured a knowledge-driven economy. Chief Dave Umahi, he added, gave the state a new look through flyovers, concrete roads, public utilities and a well-organised system for clearing waste.

Turning to the present, the Publicity Secretary said that, by the party's reading of public records, the administration of Governor Francis Nwifuru had fallen short of the standard set by those predecessors. He cited what he described as the slow pace of key infrastructure delivery, the continuing hardship facing civil servants, retirees and traders, and the gap between budget promises and visible results, referring to [named source, e.g. budget implementation report, to be inserted and verified]. These, he said, were the party's assessments and were open to examination by the public and by the government itself.

"Ebonyi people are entitled to ask what has changed on their roads, in their markets and in their pay packets," he said, "and they are equally entitled to compare any answer with what the PDP built."

He said the party was resolved to restore the momentum of earlier years, and presented its governorship candidate, Amb. Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, as thoroughly prepared, well equipped and empowered to lead a new economy anchored on industrialisation, diversification and growth across all sectors.

Candidates and delegates of the Labour Party, the ADC and the PDP also joined discussions on the leadership the state requires.

Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi state has urged members of the 2026 Batch ‘C’ Stream I of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) to acquire entrepreneurial skills and contribute meaningfully to the development of their host communities and Nigeria.

Nwifuru gave the charge at the swearing-in ceremony of the corps members at the NYSC Permanent Orientation Camp, Afikpo, describing Ebonyi as peaceful, hospitable and endowed with agricultural potentials.

The governor said Ebonyi is a state with emerging economic opportunities, noting that his administration remained committed to human capital development.

"My administration is committed to youth empowerment, infrastructural development, agriculture and skills acquisition.

"This is part of efforts to create opportunities and equip young people for a changing world."

""I therefore encourage you to take advantage of the NYSC Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development Programme with opportunities in skills, enterprise and problem-solving rather than sole reliance on paid employment."

He urged the corps members to make the service year, a period of learning, personal transformation and community service,

"You should use your Community Development Service projects to address needs in education, healthcare, agriculture, environmental protection, digital literacy and entrepreneurship.

"I also charge you to respect the laws, traditions and values of your host communities.

'You should use the scheme to promote national unity and integration among Nigerians from diverse backgrounds.

"The state government is continually commited to your welfare, security and well-being throughout the service year as I urge you to remain disciplined and responsible."

Earlier, the NYSC State Coordinator, Mrs. Malgwi Maidariya, welcomed the corps members, noting that the orientation course was designed to equip them with knowledge, values and practical skills needed to become resilient, responsible and service-oriented citizens.

Maidariya appealed to the state government to improve facilities at the orientation camp, including modernising the kitchen, constructing a standard dining hall, establishing a functional Skills Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development Centre and renovating the perimeter fencing, to enhance security.

"We request additional seating facilities at the multipurpose hall, as the interventions would improve corps members’ welfare and strengthen the camp’s capacity to deliver effective orientation.

"You should actively participate in lectures, drills, physical training and skills acquisition activities while using the service year to learn, serve and contribute to national development."

NASS 2027: Ibeku Community Backs Alex Ikwechegh’s Reelection Bid

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the Ibeku community in Aba, Abia State, under the aegis of the Ibeku Political Forum, IPF, has declared its support for the reelection bid of the member representing Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Alex Mascot Ikwechegh.

The lawmaker, who is seeking a second term on the platform of the Labour Party, received the endorsement at a meeting of the Ibeku Political Forum held in Aba on Wednesday, September 30, 2026.

In a communique issued at the end of the meeting, the group said its decision was based on what it described as Ikwechegh’s leadership qualities and legislative achievements during his first term in office.

The communique was signed by the IPF President, Chief Emmanuel Ekeleme; Secretary-General, Ambassador Chinedu Emeruwa; and Women Leader, Mrs. Catherine Onwudinjo.

According to the group, Ikwechegh’s reelection would, in its view, represent another chapter of what it described as progress and purposeful leadership in the Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency.

The forum also expressed confidence in the lawmaker’s ability to attract development projects and support legislation aimed at improving the socio-economic and infrastructural conditions of communities within the constituency.

The communique partly reads:

The group further pledged to mobilise support and provide what it described as necessary logistics for Ikwechegh’s campaign across the constituency.

The Ibeku Political Forum also called on residents to participate actively in the electoral process and make use of their Permanent Voter Cards, PVCs, ahead of the 2027 elections.

The group said its support for the lawmaker cuts across people from the academia, media, traditional institutions, religious bodies and the private sector.

It maintained that Ikwechegh’s return to the National Assembly would provide an opportunity, in its view, for him to continue pursuing legislation and constituency projects targeted at development within Aba North/Aba South Federal Constituency.

The 2027 general elections are expected to determine the next occupants of elective positions across Nigeria, including seats in the National Assembly.

Dr. Ifeanyi Chukwuma Odii, the governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in Ebonyi State, has donated N7 million to support retired staff of Ebonyi State University (EBSU) who are seeking payment of their pension and gratuity.

Mr. Darlington Onwe, Publicity Secretary of the PDP in Ebonyi, disclosed this at a press conference at the university’s CAS Campus, Abakaliki, on Thursday.

Onwe said the donation followed a video circulating on social media in which some EBSU retirees appealed to the state government and members of the public for assistance over alleged non-payment of their pension and gratuity.

He said the party, through the organized retirees’ body led by Mr. Emeka Ugoke, had accredited 216 retirees and collected their account details.

Odii instructed that each of the accredited retirees receive N100,000 as immediate support.

“The governorship candidate of our party considers the situation highly shameful and a failure of leadership, especially for people who devoted their productive years to developing the knowledge economy of the state.

“As a humanist concerned about the welfare and well-being of the people, the candidate has directed that the 216 accredited retirees be given N100,000 each as support,” Onwe said.

He, however, noted that the figure of 216 was not the complete number of EBSU retirees, saying available information suggested that the number could be close to 400 or more.

Onwe also appealed to the Ebonyi Government and the university authorities to urgently address the retirees’ concerns.

He said the gesture was intended as humanitarian support and not as a political campaign.

“The support was not designed to score political gains or generate political goodwill. We call on the state government and the university authorities to look into the situation because people are suffering,” he said.

Speaking at the event, Ugoke, Chairman of the EBSU Retirees Association, said the association was formed to press for the payment of pension and gratuity to retired academic and non-academic staff of the university.

Ugoke, who retired in 2022, said he began making inquiries about his entitlements after his retirement and later mobilized other retirees who, according to him, were also affected.

He said the retirees had made appeals through various media organizations and other channels to draw attention to their situation.

“We are almost dying off. Many of us have died due to hardship, while others are bedridden or unable to meet their basic needs,” Ugoke said.

He appealed to the state government and other stakeholders to intervene in the matter.

Ugoke also said he had personally raised the issue with Gov. Francis Nwifuru, adding that the governor told him that the university’s vice chancellor and pro-chancellor were responsible for the institution’s finances.

He said the governor had also told him that the university enjoyed financial autonomy.

According to Ugoke, the retirees are seeking the payment of their pension and gratuity in line with their conditions of service.

He said the association comprised both retired academic and non-academic staff of EBSU.

From scholarship beneficiaries studying in universities overseas to new classrooms, hostels and specialised institutions taking shape across Ebonyi State, education has become one of the most visible areas in which supporters of Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru say the administration is making an impact.

Against the backdrop of criticism on social media that the administration has achieved little since assuming office, students and stakeholders in the state’s education sector on Tuesday embarked on a tour of selected institutions and projects to assess some of the government’s interventions.

Led by the Special Assistant to the Governor on Students Mobilisation, Barrister Angel Odono, the exercise began with a press briefing at the Old Government House in Abakaliki before moving to institutions including the Ebonyi State University of ICT, Science and Technology, Oferekpe; Ebonyi State College of Education, Ikwo; and Ebonyi State College of Nursing Sciences.

For Odono, the exercise was less about political rhetoric and more about putting records, beneficiaries and physical projects before the public.

“In recent times, we heard claims in certain quarters that the present administration has not achieved anything or has done little of what other states have done. Today, the Ebonyi State students and indeed the entire student stakeholders in the education sector, we consider it necessary to bring the conversation back to the facts.”

She said education had been made a central component of the administration’s People's Charter of Needs, pointing particularly to postgraduate scholarships awarded to Ebonyi indigenes in Nigeria and abroad.

“The current administration has made education a central component of its People's Charter of Need. The state government has publicly highlighted local and foreign postgraduate course scholarship intervention, including the scholarship for Ebonyi State graduates in universities within Nigeria and overseas,” Odono said.

According to her, during the 2024/2025 academic session, 204 graduates were selected for overseas postgraduate scholarships, while 700 were enrolled for local postgraduate studies.

“204 graduates had been sent to study and do their postgraduate scholarship overseas, while 700 were enrolled for a local postgraduate scholarship. In 2025/2026, we had 101 foreign students doing their programmes overseas. And we also have 500 students doing their local education here in Ikwo, that's the College of Education, Ikwo. We also have 443 persons doing their local studies here in EBSU. These are not merely figures on papers," Odono said.

However, behind the figures, she argued, are stories of young people whose educational journeys have been sustained and whose families financial burdens have also been reduced.

“Behind every scholarship is a young Ebonyi whose academic journey has been sustained, a family whose financial burden has been reduced, and a future that has been given another opportunity,” she said.

But the organisers did not want the exercise to end with speeches.

Odono said the subsequent inspection was designed to allow journalists, students and other stakeholders to see some of the projects and interventions for themselves.

“We want members of the press to see what His Excellency has done. We want the students to see what His Excellency has done. We want the stakeholders to see what His Excellency has equally done. This is why we have initiated the stakeholder forum across the education sector. And we are not afraid to show them that a government that claims to serve its people is prepared to show its work.”

She also called on students to approach public discourse with responsibility, particularly as social media continues to shape public opinion.

“Let me state it clearly that the students of Ebonyi State will continue to take a keen interest in policies and programmes that affect their education, the welfare and the future.”

She added, "Let us not manufacture figures or make claims when we cannot sustain them. Our defence of any government programme must be based on facts, documents, photographs, beneficiaries, testimonies and that we can independently verify. That is how responsible students contribute to the public discourse.”

Beyond the Scholarship Figures

At the Ebonyi State Scholarship Board, officials provided further details about the scale of the programme.

The Executive Secretary of the board, Dr Ekpoma Steven, said the scholarship initiative had attracted attention beyond Ebonyi, recounting a visit to the Federal Ministry of Education.

“When we went to the Federal Ministry of Education sometime early this year, the minister told us that they are surprised that the number of students as big as 300 are in the UK courtesy of the state government,” he said.

According to him, 204 students were selected for the first foreign scholarship cohort, while another group subsequently travelled, as some courses required additional arrangements.

He explained that the programme was based on merit rather than political connections.

“It is purely on merit, and that is why even when some people begin to mesmerise themselves and say it is for governor's cronies, it is unfortunate that people don't have facts and they keep misrepresenting the programme that is purely on merit.”

Ekpoma said beneficiaries were selected without political, material or societal influence.

“Anybody who is there is there on merit.”

He said the different cohorts eventually brought the number of Ebonyi students undertaking postgraduate studies in the United Kingdom to 304.

He also noted that beneficiaries from the first cohort had completed their master's programmes and were progressing to doctoral studies.

The scholarship, according to officials, extends beyond overseas education.

Eze Kingsley Ogochukwu, Coordinator of the FON Scholarship Educare Initiative, said hundreds of students had also benefited from local scholarship interventions.

He disclosed that of the 700 students initially approved for local scholarships in the first batch, 520 eventually enrolled, with some already completing their programmes.

In the 2025/2026 session, he said, additional categories of beneficiaries were included.

Among them, he mentioned 63 Class 21 Law students, 43 first-class graduates of Ebonyi State University who were employed by the institution and enrolled in the scholarship programme, students studying foreign languages at the Federal University Ndufu-Alike, and 500 students enrolled at the College of Education, Ikwo.

He also cited 187 students from the first Information and Communication Technology programme at Oferekpe.

“All these are targeted on developing human beings because if you develop one person, you have developed the necessary lineage,” Ogochukwu said.

He argued that the impact of human-capital development could extend beyond the immediate visibility of physical infrastructure.

“The ripple effect of human empowerment through education is something that goes beyond cutting a ribbon or commissioning a project. Because if you empower somebody today, the person will come back tomorrow to build whatever you felt you should have built with the money you used to train the person.”

Ogochukwu said the scholarship model had also attracted interest from outside Ebonyi.

“Just recently, the Enugu State government asked us to come and show them the template. They want to enrol 100 students, which is only 50 foreign and then the rest local,” he said.

He encouraged young people to pay greater attention to science and technology, arguing that the future of the economy would increasingly depend on technological skills.

A Scholarship as an Investment

For one of the beneficiaries, the significance of the intervention goes beyond receiving a certificate.

Speaking on behalf of scholarship beneficiaries, a representative said the programme should be viewed as an investment in Ebonyi's future rather than a personal gift to individual students.

“This scholarship is not a gift. It's an investment and it's a call for responsibility, meaning that we owe all Ebonyians, the people of Ebonyi State, to be able to give back at the end of this education system, this programme that is going on.”

The beneficiary said the ultimate expectation was that trained Ebonyians would return with the skills needed to contribute to the development of the state.

“We are assuring Ebonyians that we are not going to disappoint them. And I believe in the next two or three years, just like our principal has said, all these beneficiaries you are hearing about, when they come back, we are not going to be expecting expatriates to come to Ebonyi to develop Ebonyi.”

According to the speaker, many of the beneficiaries were graduating with distinctions, while local scholars were also recording strong academic performances.

From Scholarship to Infrastructure

The assessment tour also shifted attention from human-capital development to physical infrastructure.

At the Ebonyi State University of ICT, Science and Technology, Oferekpe, officials said construction of key facilities was nearing completion.

The Students' Union President, Ucheji Cosmos Ejike, pointed to the completed staff quarters and a school building said to be about 98 per cent complete.

“For example, the school staff quarters are completed, and the school building is 98% completed. Some other structures are included in place, including other amenities in the school, ongoing repeatedly. And because of that, we say a big thank you to the governor,” he said.

At the university, Vice-Chancellor Engineer Professor Ernest Itumegba said the institution was preparing to commence academic activities at the new site.

He said the university had given October 5 as the target date for relocation.

“Yesterday, the governor and the stakeholders of the state were here. After taking a look at what is happening, the governor is still insisting that 5th October is 5th October. He said he will do his wonders, starting our 2026-2027 academic session. And our students will bear witness with me that we are going to start here by God's grace.”

The vice-chancellor described the institution as Nigeria's first university focused specifically on ICT, saying its curriculum was designed around the needs of major technology industries.

The university, he explained, seeks to ensure that students acquire professional certifications in addition to their university degrees.

“The idea is before a student graduates here from any discipline, if the person wants to learn and wants to acquire or to become successful, certified by international big tech industries, they are free, and we train them in a way that they will achieve, like not less than six certificates outside the certificate that UICT will give them."

He said interest in the institution was already growing, with the university's intake for the coming session put at 1,100 students.

College of Education Gets New Lease of Life

At Ebonyi State College of Education, Ikwo, officials described the governor's intervention as significant to the institution's expansion.

Professor Benedict Mba, the institution's provost, said the government had consistently allocated significant attention to education and that the college had benefited from the administration's interventions.

He cited regular payment of salaries, free transportation for staff living in town and the scholarship scheme for students.

“As it concerns tertiary education and the Ebonyi State College of Education in particular, the government has done a lot,” he said.

“The students study here without paying school fees. They study under a scholarship. The government takes care of the tuition fee of every student here, accommodation and living expenses.”

He also highlighted the institution's transition from an NCE-awarding college to a degree-awarding institution following legislation by the state government.

The Registrar of the college, Akpokwa Emmanuel Sunday, said the transformation had been accompanied by a dramatic increase in student enrolment.

According to him, the institution's population, which was previously below 50 students, had risen to 579 following the government interventions and scholarship programme.

“This place was completely like a moribund institution. With the intervention of the government, there are a lot of things. A lot of things,” he said.

Nursing College Expansion

The tour also took the stakeholders to the Ebonyi State College of Nursing Sciences, Uburu, in the Ohoazara Local Government area of the state where the provost, Mrs Patricia Nwekwegu, highlighted completed and ongoing projects.

She said the classroom block had been completed and contained eight classrooms, departments, a small library and other facilities.

Attention was also drawn to an ongoing female hostel project expected to provide accommodation for hundreds of students.

“The female hostel is about 560 rooms that will house like 860 students. It's still ongoing. You can see the workers are there. It's the courtesy of His Excellency,” Nwekwegu said.

She linked the investment to the need to train more health professionals and prepare young people for roles in the state's health sector.

“His Excellency is not sleeping in the health sector, especially on how to bring the students up and how to train them because they are our future healthcare workers.”

Students Assess What They See

For student representatives, the physical changes across institutions were part of the evidence they wanted the public to consider.

Collins Ogbonna, President of the National Association of Ebonyi State Students, cited improvements in electricity, roads and other facilities around educational institutions.

He said students had experienced changes in infrastructure at institutions including the Ebonyi State University, Federal University Ndufu-Alike, College of Education and the ICT university.

Ucheji Cosmos Ejike similarly said students at Oferekpe appreciated the government's investment in their institution.

The students' assessments, however, exist within a wider political environment, with the 2027 elections approaching.

Odono said students had a right to participate in democratic activities but should base their advocacy on facts and remain peaceful.

“As students, we have every right to participate in a democratic process subject to law,” she said.

“For those who believe that the present administration deserves another mandate, the appropriate democratic response is to mobilise peacefully, register and vote, and persuade others through facts rather than intimidation or abuse.”

The statement reflects the political dimension surrounding the assessment, but Odono maintained that the immediate purpose of the exercise was to bring the administration's education interventions into public view.

For the organisers, the argument is that the record should be examined through documents, beneficiaries, testimonies and projects on the ground.

For the students and education officials who participated in the tour, those interventions represent an investment in human capital and educational infrastructure.

Ultimately, the significance of the exercise may rest not only in the figures announced or the projects inspected, but also in whether the opportunities created through them translate into graduates, professionals and institutions capable of contributing to Ebonyi's development long after the current political cycle has passed.

The Dr Innocent Unah Solidarity Movement for Nwifuru on Monday urged the opposition in Ebonyi to acknowledge Gov. Francis Nwifuru's developmental imprints.

The Founder of the group, Dr Innocent Unah made the call in an interview in Abakaliki, insisting that politics should go with acknowleding efforts made to develop a state or country.

Unah said that though the Nwifuru administration has areas to improve upon, it has made appreciable impact which has pushed the state upwards the developmental trajectory.

He noted that Nwifuru gave education for instance, an aggressive treatment with massive interventions in the Ebonyi State University (EBSU) the state College of Education among other institution's.

"The governor enhanced infrastructure in the institutions, increased staff salaries, increased subventions among other interventions which promote academic excellence.

""304 Ebonyi indigenes are currently studying in the United Kingdom for their Masters and Doctorate Degree programmes while over 1, 000 others are pursuing same programmes in universities across Nigeria."

"The governor has employed over 1,500 teachers to teach in public primary and secondary schools across the state to improve reaching in schools and generally enhance quality of education,."

The support group coordinator said that in Agriculture, the governor has revatalised the state chemical and fertiliser company making it produce at optimal capacity.

"The state government has also procured over 3,800 farm equipments distributed to farmers for mass productiion of farm produce.

"The state feed mill and processing centres are reshaping rural value chain as they represent efforts to raise the marginal product of labour for employment.

"The government has collaborated with agencies such as the International Fund for Agricultural Development (IFAD) assisted Value Chain Development Programme (VCDP) to enhance the production, processing and marketing of rice and cassava."

Unah said the governor has performed creditably in infrastructure with several kilometres of urban and rural roads completed with others, at various completion stages.

"The Vanco junction flyover in Abakaliki is an architectural masterpiece that is poised to become a civic symbol of traffic solution.

"The University of Information Communication Technology (ICT) Oferekpe, the University of Aerospace Engineering among others, are signposts designed to place Ebonyi.among infrastructural pillars of the country."

He noted that the governor has also made impactful strides in
human empowerment, youth development, sports, health, commerce, among other sectors.

"This is the reason we are supporting him for a second tenure to consolidate on his gains in office.

"A second tenure will also enable him correct areas of deficiency and this is in the overall interest of the state."

The China Communications Construction Company (CCCC) has pledged to deepen its engagement with Nigerian communities by supporting the preservation and promotion of local customs and traditions, as part of efforts to strengthen cultural exchange and people-to-people relations between Nigeria and China.

The company’s Project Manager, Jin Haibing, made the commitment in a statement issued to newsmen after joining residents of Nchatancha Nike Community in Enugu State to celebrate the New Yam Festival, which coincided with China’s Mid-Autumn Festival.

Haibing said the joint celebration provided an opportunity for CCCC staff and members of the host community to come together, interact and explore ways of promoting local cultural traditions while strengthening friendship through cultural exchange.

He described the celebration as an important platform for fostering mutual understanding between people from different cultural backgrounds, noting that cultural activities could play a significant role in strengthening community relations and cooperation.

The New Yam Festival, popularly known as Iri Ji in Igbo culture, is one of the major traditional celebrations among the Igbo people, marking the harvest season and expressing gratitude while symbolising hopes for peace, prosperity and a better future.

Similarly, China’s Mid-Autumn Festival is traditionally associated with family reunion, harmony and goodwill.

Haibing noted that despite the festivals originating from different cultural traditions, they share common values centred on harvest, happiness, unity and aspirations for a better life.

The celebration featured traditional prayers, goodwill messages, cultural displays, traditional dances and the ceremonial presentation of new yam, providing CCCC officials and community members an opportunity to experience and appreciate the cultural heritage of the host community.

CCCC staff and residents also interacted freely and shared local food in a warm and friendly atmosphere, further strengthening the bond between the company and members of the community where it carries out its activities.

Community representatives expressed appreciation to CCCC for what they described as its long-standing involvement in infrastructure development, community engagement and support for initiatives aimed at promoting local development.

The representatives also acknowledged the company’s efforts to maintain close ties with host communities, stressing that such engagement had helped create opportunities for interaction and mutual understanding beyond its infrastructure projects.

Over the years, CCCC said it had continued to promote local engagement in Nigeria by respecting local customs and traditions, participating in community and cultural activities and maintaining relationships with residents in its areas of operation.

Says "Money Won’t Be a Problem"



Senator David Umahi made this statement while mobilising support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru, and other candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Minister of Works, Senator David Umahi, has declared that lack of funds will not be a challenge in the 2027 election campaigns for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, Ebonyi State Governor Francis Nwifuru and other candidates of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Umahi made the declaration at the grand finale of the Ohanivo New Yam Festival held at Oshiri Primary School in the Oshiri Development Centre of the Onicha Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, where he called on the people to rally behind the APC candidates ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The former Ebonyi governor said he had more than 5,000 billionaire friends whose financial support would be felt during the campaigns, insisting that the election would be a movement to consolidate what he described as peace and development in Ebonyi State and the Southeast.

“We have nothing to worry about. Nothing. If it comes to money, I have over 5,000 billionaires who are my friends. Who are my friends, Money will not be a problem. This election will be a movement. It will be a movement. The movement of our peace in Ebonyi State. The movement of our peace in Southeast,” Umahi said.

He also declared that the APC would embark on a grassroots mobilisation campaign across the state, urging the people to vote for Tinubu at the presidential level, Nwifuru for governor and Senator Anthony Ani for the Senate.

“We go from house to house to educate our people. All our votes will be for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, all our votes will be for Governor Francis Ogbonna Nwifuru, and all our votes will be for Senator Anthony Ani. This is the movement,” he said.

Umahi urged supporters not to destroy campaign posters or disrupt the activities of opposition parties, saying, “You are free to campaign... I don't cause trouble.” He, however, maintained that he would continue to work with Governor Nwifuru to secure what he described as “eight years” for the administration.

“We cannot be deceived. Southeast will support President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and make it a move,” he said, adding that there was “no vacancy” in Ebonyi State ahead of the 2027 elections.

Speaking at the event, Governor Nwifuru recalled the political developments leading to his emergence as governor in 2023, saying the people of Ohanivo and other supporters had demonstrated confidence in him. He said the support he received from the community had given him the confidence to seek another term in office.

“Today, this is my first time receiving a blessing personally for my second time in office. I tell you this: I tell you this for free. A lot of clans and tribes have been inviting me to attend their functions, and I deserve to take a blessing from them, and I had a chance. Because I waited for that of Ohanivo first. I say, "Four plus four,” Nwifuru said.

The governor also commended Umahi for his role at the federal level, describing his representation of Ebonyi and the Southeast in the Federal Executive Council as effective.

He further acknowledged the contributions of Ebonyi sons and daughters serving in the National Assembly, urging residents to assess lawmakers by the development they attract to their constituencies.

In a motion moved by Chief Ifesinachi Odii and supported by Ogbuefi Enekwachi Akpa, the people of Ohanivo urged Governor Nwifuru not to be distracted by what they described as the activities of “political merchants".

Akpa, who chaired the occasion, said the New Yam Festival was a celebration of thanksgiving, culture, hard work, unity and prosperity, while calling on youths and indigenes in the diaspora to remain connected to their roots and contribute to the development of the community.

The Member representing Onicha, Ohaozara and Ivo Federal Constituency, Hon. Nkemkama Kama, on Friday, visited the victims of flood disaster in Akaeze community in Ivo Local Government Area.

Kama while touring the affected five villages to assess the extent of the damage, described the situation as devastating, noting that several houses had been destroyed, families displaced, and property worth billions of naira lost.

“I came to see the devastating effect of the flood that affected my people. It is terrible. I have not seen anything like such devastation before. Houses and families have been displaced, homes destroyed, and properties worth billions of naira lost,” Kama said.

Kama who was accompanied by stakeholders of the council raised a total of N8million and 500 cartons of noodles to the victims of the devastating flood.

The lawmaker said the donation was intended to provide immediate relief to the victims while awaiting further intervention from the state and federal governments.

He disclosed that he provided N4 million personally, while the Commissioner for Infrastructure, Ebonyi State, Engr Obasi Abara, contributed an additional N4 million.

“While I was coming today, I came with about 500 cartons of Indomie, and I also gave them a token of N4 million, supported by my Commissioner with another N4 million, just to get things going while we wait for the intervention to start rolling in,” he said.

Kama also disclosed that the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) and the State Emergency Management Agency (SEMA) had visited the affected area, adding that he had communicated with the Director-General of NEMA over the disaster.

He expressed optimism that additional assistance would come from both the state and federal governments, saying, “I can assure you there will be many interventions coming from the state and the federal level.”

One of the victims of the flood, Okoro Emmanuel, said the flood had caused unprecedented destruction, with several buildings collapsing and farms submerged. He appealed to the government and well-meaning individuals to come to the community’s aid.

Another victim, Nwali Ogochukwu, said he lost his buildings to the flood. “I lost my building. All my buildings just fell. All of them,” he said, as he appealed for assistance.

The victims said although no lives were lost, the disaster had displaced residents and destroyed homes, farms, and other valuable property, leaving many families stranded and in urgent need of assistance.

After years of property disputes, petitions, EFCC proceedings and relentless adverse publicity, Rebecca Omokamo Godwin Isaac is now asking why lawyers acting for Colleen Mero Yesufu and members of the Yesufu family have taken their campaign into an entirely different and deeply troubling territory: her Nigerian international passport.

According to Rebecca, the campaign did not stop at questioning the validity of her passport. She alleges that the Yesufus went as far as presenting false and fabricated travel records in support of their petition, claiming that she had recently travelled to London and Dubai. Rebecca states that she last travelled to Dubai in 2022 and had not travelled to London for more than five years.

Even more disturbing, images and details of her international passport were allegedly published online and circulated publicly, exposing highly sensitive personal information to the entire world and creating a serious risk of identity theft, impersonation, financial fraud and other forms of misuse. What began as a dispute over ownership of land has therefore expanded, in Rebecca’s view, into an intrusion into her citizenship records, travel history, personal data and security.

THIS LOOKS LIKE A DESPERATE LAST KICK.

I have watched this dispute move from one institution to another and from one aspect of my life to another.

Now I am asking publicly:

What exactly does Colleen Mero Yesufu have to do with Rebecca Omokamo Godwin Isaac’s Nigerian international passport?

Colleen Mero Yesufu is the petitioner in a disputed Abuja property matter. She is also now specifically named in my counter petition as a person whose conduct, documents and claimed title chain I have asked the authorities to investigate.

Yet Colleen Mero Yesufu and the Yesufu family have also petitioned Nigerian authorities concerning my passport.

Why?

What does my Nigerian citizenship have to do with her land claim?

How does a dispute over Plot 4022, Guzape, suddenly become a campaign concerning my Nigerian passport?

This is beginning to look less like a pursuit of property rights and more like an endless determination to find another institution, another petition and another headline through which to attack Rebecca.

COLLEEN IS NO LONGER ENTITLED TO BE PRESENTED AS THOUGH ONLY HER ALLEGATIONS MATTER

For years, Colleen Mero Yesufu has been publicly presented principally as an elderly petitioner claiming to be a victim.

Her age does not establish her title.

Her age does not make her documents authentic.

Her age does not exempt her claimed transaction from investigation.

And filing the first petition does not mean every allegation she makes must be accepted while allegations against her are ignored.

My counter petition specifically asks investigators to examine how Colleen Mero Yesufu claims to have acquired Plot 4022 through Kabiru Yaro, including the agreement, consideration allegedly paid, banking evidence, witnesses, original documents and the identity documents used to process her claimed interest. It further asks investigators to establish how original documents bearing the name of Amina Musa Usman came into the Yesufu chain.

Those are not trivial questions.

They go directly to the foundation of her claimed ownership.

WHAT DID THE ICPC MATERIAL RAISE ABOUT THE ROOT OF THIS TITLE?

This is where Nigerians should pay close attention.

Colleen Mero Yesufu had earlier petitioned the ICPC and the resulting investigation reportedly encountered a grave problem with Amina Musa Usman, the person presented as the original allottee or root of title.

According to the material available to my lawyers, Amina Musa Usman reportedly could not be traced or independently verified. My petition consequently asks that the complete original ICPC investigation file be obtained so that the precise findings can be established conclusively.

So let us ask the obvious question.

If a person's claimed title ultimately depends upon a transaction originating from somebody whose identity reportedly could not even be properly verified, why is the person relying on that chain treated automatically as the unquestionable victim?

Why is the chain not being investigated by the EFCC with the same aggression directed at me?

My petition asks that Colleen Mero Yesufu and Kabiru Yaro produce the complete financial and documentary chain from Amina Musa Usman through Kabiru Yaro to Colleen, including evidence of consideration, banking records, witnesses and every transfer instrument.

Produce the evidence.

That is all I am asking.

FROM MY HOME TO MY PASSPORT. WHERE DOES IT STOP?

What began as a dispute over property has, from my perspective, expanded into almost every part of my life:

My land.

My business.

My bank account.

My family home.

My prosecution.

My reputation.

And now my passport.

Why has it become another front in this dispute?

It clearly shows the level of cruelty, barbarism and utter desperation of Colleen Mero Yesufu to destroy my had-earned image and business chain.

Colleen Mero Yesufu and those acting with her remind me of the biblical story of the two women before King Solomon. The false claimant was willing to see the child destroyed rather than let the rightful mother have him, while the true mother chose to protect the child at all costs. In the same way, this dispute now appears to have gone far beyond establishing ownership and into a relentless campaign against my reputation, family and personal life. I believe that, as in Solomon’s judgment, the truth will ultimately expose the rightful claim.

I am urging Nigerians and institutions such as the EFCC to look beyond the noise and examine the truth of this prolonged dispute. I ask only that the facts, documents and conduct of everyone involved be subjected to the same scrutiny. From my perspective, I have become the victim of a sustained campaign driven by vindictiveness, vendetta, conspiracy and falsehood, and I believe the truth will ultimately speak for itself.

THE ₦110 MILLION CONTRADICTION

One fact should not disappear beneath the headlines.

The EFCC’s own charge alleges that Richard John Idakwogi of Rychado Homes represented that he was entitled to sell Plot 4022 and caused me to pay him ₦110 million and, that he duped me.

In simple terms, the EFCC’s own charge portrays me not as the beneficiary of the alleged wrongdoing, but as the victim who was duped by Richard to part with ₦110 million for the property. I was the person who paid the money and, on the face of that charge, the person who suffered the financial loss.

I paid for the property.

I took possession.

I developed it and built my family home there.

Yet I have faced some of the harshest consequences arising from the transaction.

That contradiction deserves a clear explanation.

23 DAYS INSIDE MY OWN HOME

For 23 days, I was confined inside my own home while EFCC operatives remained there.

Electricity, water and cooking gas were disconnected by the EFCC and access to essential supplies were Non-existent. One of staff fainted during the ordeal.

There had been no criminal conviction against me.

There had been no final judgment declaring Colleen Mero Yesufu the owner of Plot 4022.

Yet my family life was turned upside down.

Twenty-three days. Inside the home I paid for and built.

That should disturb every Nigerian who believes punishment must follow conviction, not precede it.

WHY WAS AN EXPIRED INTERIM ORDER STILL BEING ENFORCED AND WHY DOES THE EFCC DISOBEY A COUR ORDER?

The EFCC reportedly obtained an interim order in February with a validity of only 14 days, yet months later, in June, operatives moved to enforce that same order at Plot 4022. Thereafter, when the Federal High Court ordered the parties to maintain the status quo ante bellum, the EFCC refused to obey that order. Nigerians deserve to know why an expired interim order was enforced and why a court directive was not obeyed by the EFCC.


MY CHILDREN ARE NOW WITHOUT THEIR HOME

After I eventually left the property and appeared before the court, the EFCC sought to have my bail revoked.

The court refused.

Yet when my family returned to the property, we were prevented from resuming normal entrance into our property.

My children’s clothes, books and personal belongings remain inside.

The dispute is no longer only about documents and competing title claims.

Children have been displaced from the home they know, even though ownership has not been finally determined and their parents have not been convicted of the alleged property offence.

How can that be proportional?

WHO BENEFITS FROM THE FORFEITURE?

The EFCC’s forfeiture process raises another serious question.

The EFCC's filing seeks forfeiture “for the benefit of the nominal complainants,” Colleen Mero Yesufu.

No final judgment has yet determined that Colleen owns Plot 4022.

So Nigerians are entitled to ask a straightforward question:

If the property is ultimately forfeited, who benefits, under what legal theory, and why should one side of an unresolved ownership dispute obtain a practical advantage before the dispute itself has been finally determined?

That question requires transparency.

WHAT ABOUT AGIS?

The land records themselves should provide answers.

My counter-petition requests a complete audit of the physical file, electronic access logs, file movements, substitutions, amendments, approvals, uploaded identity documents and the circumstances surrounding any caveat placed on or removed from the property.

If nobody improperly accessed or manipulated the records, the audit trail should establish that.

If there was interference, the same records should identify it.

That is why an independent audit matters.

WHAT DOES MY PASSPORT PROVE ABOUT PLOT 4022?

Nothing.

It does not prove Colleen’s title.

So why another agency?

Why another petition?

Why another headline?

From my perspective, the dispute has moved far beyond a straightforward attempt to establish title. It increasingly appears to be an effort to exhaust me financially, personally and institutionally until defending myself becomes unbearable.

I will not give up.

ENOUGH IS ENOUGH

Let Colleen prove her title.

Let Kabiru Yaro prove his transaction.

Let the root of title be independently verified.

Let Richard and all involved pay for duping me ₦110 million and putting my family and I in this situation.

Let AGIS produce its audit trail.

Let the EFCC explain why its own charge portrays me as the person duped of ₦110 million while such extraordinary pressure has been directed against me and my family.

I am a wife.

I am a mother.

I am a Nigerian citizen.

I have not been convicted of the allegations repeatedly attached to my name.

If this dispute is about land, prove the title.

But if the objective is to pursue Rebecca Omokamo Godwin Isaac through one institution after another until she breaks, Nigerians are entitled to see the pattern and ask questions.

.....As leaders emphasised the importance of peace and development in Ebonyi.

Political leaders and residents of Ezza extraction have rallied behind Ebonyi State Governor Rt Hon Francis Nwifuru, declaring support for his second-term bid and the All Progressives Congress (APC) ahead of the 2027 general elections.

The declaration was made during a mobilisation visit to Ezzaezekuna Alioma Autonomous Community in Ohaukwu Local Government Area of the state, where a large crowd gathered to receive APC leaders and representatives from the Ezza community.

The delegation included the Ebonyi State APC Deputy Chairman, the Senior Special Assistant to the Governor on Power, and other community and party leaders.

Speaking during the event, the governor's Senior Special Assistant on Power, Hon. Chinedu Awo, said the visit was aimed at mobilising residents to support the governor and other APC candidates.

“My message is very simple. We are in support of our government, and we came here to talk to our people, to have one voice and vote for our governor massively for a second term.”

Awo attributed the mobilisation to what he described as the restoration of peace in the area under the present administration.

“Our governor gave us peace, and there is nothing like peace in any family or community. Unlike before, today people can come here freely without fear.”

He said the gathering was also intended to mobilise voters across communities and urged residents to support APC candidates from the presidency down to the state legislature.

The APC State Deputy Chairman, Hon. Chinedu Alphonsus Nwali, while addressing journalists, said the delegation was in Ezzaezekuna Alioma to identify with the community and educate residents on the importance of supporting the governor's second-term bid and other APC candidates in 2027.

He said the area had previously experienced serious conflict but argued that the situation had changed under Governor Nwifuru.

“Before now, this place was more like a war-torn area, but as you can see, His Excellency has been able to restore permanent peace here.”

The APC official also called on residents to maintain peaceful relations with one another and their neighbours.

He described the turnout as significant, saying the presence of women, children and elderly residents demonstrated, in his view, the community's appreciation of the peace being experienced.

A former commissioner for agriculture and natural resources, Hon. Ogodo Ali Nome, who also spoke at the gathering, linked the call for Governor Nwifuru's second term to what he described as an established political tradition in Ebonyi State.

According to him, discussions surrounding the state's political succession had previously produced an understanding that the governorship would rotate among different blocs and that an incumbent who had secured the seat would serve two terms.

He argued that Nwifuru's case should not be treated differently.

“It is a custom in Ebonyi State that whoever sits on that seat will go twice. And that is why we are going around to tell people that it is our people's turn to go twice.”

He also cited projects and interventions in autonomous communities as part of the administration's record, urging Ezza people to support the APC.

Comrade Emeka Nwonu, Executive Secretary of the State Pension Board, described the turnout as evidence of what he said was the impact of the state government's policies in the community.

“You see the jubilation, you see the joy, you see the happiness, and you see the excitement on the face of people.”

Nwonu subsequently appealed to residents to vote for APC candidates across the different levels of government, describing such support as a way of appreciating the governor.

The Paramount Leader of Ezzaezekuna Alioma Autonomous Community, Super High Chief Iboke Emmanuel, formally declared the community's support for Governor Nwifuru and APC candidates.

“We, with all the people of Ezzaezekuna Alioma Autonomous Community, agree and support that we are going to vote for Governor Nwifuru and all the contestants, all the candidates in APC, from A to Z.”

The mobilisation comes as political parties and aspirants begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 general elections, with supporters of the Ebonyi governor increasingly highlighting peace, community development and political continuity as key themes in their campaign.
