Why learn from Sudan and South Sudan and Somalia?

Why can't we learn from Switzerland, Norway and, lately, the UK who are thriving individually without joining (and leaving) an unworkable experiment?

Abubakar Malami, you are not the judge. You do not have the powers to interpret the law differently from what the court says. You are promoting impunity. There is a reason the law says you should prosecute and not be the judge. The constitution would have provided for a non trial of suspects if it wants.

The simple fact that the court didn't agree with you that the accused constitute any risks to public safety is because they don't. You couldn't provide any convincing proofs that they do. Judges too are members of the public. They too need to be protected. They are not suicidal.

Those people you refused to release are POLITICAL prisoners because you held them politically not judicially.

Yoruba is the most unprepared nation for independence from Nigeria.

Others have seen the futility of being in Nigeria in this present form but Yoruba is not thinking of life outside Nigeria at all.

This is due to a number of factors;

1) Yoruba is war weary. Due to the brutal internecine wars of. the 19th century, Yoruba is worried that tribal rivalries that were suppressed by the British in a 'Nigerian arrangement' might resurface. The supremacy battles were fierce and took tolls on human and material resources.

2) Yoruba Muslims fear that they might be at the receiving end of the Yoruba nationhood. They are extremely outnumbered and do not have enough skilled human resources, they are using the northern Muslims as cover. Their businesses are also intertwined with the Fulani herders - many Yoruba Muslims are butchers who are concerned about loss of income should anything happened to their supplies.

3) Greed - Some Yoruba leaders actually know that Nigeria, as is, will never improve but they want to get their own share of the largesse. They are not altruistic but selfish people who don't care how they get to office. Unfortunately, this set has displaced the traditional highly cerebral-forward-looking Yoruba leadership. And Fulani leaders have come to see them for what they are, thereby playing into their greed for power and selfishness to quickly advance their expansionary agenda. They have taken advantageI of their vanities and have achieved in less than 5 years what they could only dream in 50 years because of intense marking by the first generation Yoruba nationalists.

4) Myopia - Some are into wishful thinking that Nigeria (as is) will work with 'good governance'. They are ready to experiment with anything. Some of them are unconscionable people who don't know or don't care about human lives. Majority of this set are urban dwellers (some elite Lagosians in particular). To them, business is business. They have lost virtually all connections with the hinterland and don't care what happens there. If the Fulani like they can annex everywhere, it is not their cup of tea. The Yoruba country doesn't appeal to them. Many of them already have dual passports, while their children and children's children don't even have Nigerian passport at all. Yoruba has lost (is still losing) grounds in many sectors that it has had very early advantages because of shallowness of this set: in commerce, industry, academia, financial services - banking and insurance etc. Even the media considered as Yoruba tuff is being challenged vigorously, with Yoruba youths only left with unnecessary attacks on other people without any depth, while the media practitioners are majorly employees of media houses owned by others. Similar employee'-status in other industries made the Yoruba youths/workers hardest hit by the Buhari's failed economic policies that saw many companies folding up and millions of job loss. Thousands are trooping to Canada as the last option.

5) Fathers and mothers of Nigeria - Partly due to (1) above, some have become Nigerian nationalists. They really don't like how Nigeria is going and wish they could do something about it. These ones have invested efforts in the Nigerian projects are trying to make it perfect. Unfortunately, all their efforts have not yielded much positive results because they are only being emotional. The idea of dismantling Nigeria doesn't sound well with their emotions. People like Baba Obasanjo is in this category. Same with many Yoruba dominated church leaders. These will even tell you that Nigeria was created by God. They are calling for restructuring by writing letters and the likes. Unfortunately, no one is reading any letters nowadays.

Actually, there are other factors but these are the most visible.

Yoruba need to sit down with each other and discuss in a frankly way how the various interests can be represented while presenting a common front.

The most articulated solution so far seem to be the restructuring model which was championed over the years by the intellectual wing of the now displaced Yoruba leadership.

But even that one seems to now be outmoded. It is already too late. As things are unfolding very quickly before our eyes, the Fulani nation is in a race to out-maneuver the Yoruba by planting themselves everywhere with force and might thereafter call for dialogue from the position of strength, thereby forcing a fait accompli.

The situation calls for a brand new strategy. It also calls for the complete and total overhaul of the Yoruba leadership by a group of young forward thinking, cerebral, extremely Yoruba leadership. The collegiate model that has been tested and has been successful should be adopted. Of course a ceremonial head should emerge but decisions have to be collectively agreed on. The current system has set Yoruba back 50 years or more. This is the time leadership should naturally emerge out of the existing vacuum. If there is any semblance of Yoruba political leadership (not to be mistaken with polical office holders) currently, then is it ineffective.

There should emerge a leadership passionate about the survival of the Yoruba nation. People who are not ashamed to be called names. Those who don't give in to emotional blackmail, who don't care whether someone sees/tags them as uncivilized. They don't have to be violent, it has nothing to do with violence. (For instance,, the British pushed and pushed for 'independence' from tthe EU which culminated in Brexit without any gun fired and the ongoing process is transparent and non-violent.) People who are educated enough to know how modern diplomacy works should emerge at this time. Those who are not cowardly and can stand their ground without betraying emotions. Those who can articulate vision and get a buy-in from the rest of the people. And it doesn't have to be through those endless-time-wasting-actionless summits (or talk shows).

The current gladiators should be left to pursue their political agenda whichever they want. They are doing it for themselves and their families, anyway.

Nigerians are talking of fundamental human rights. El Zakzaky was giving his followers education and not guns. The whole world knows what he stands for. But he has not occupied any political position to influence government policies for his Islamization mission. He doesn't wield any state power to be able to use the military and other state's coercive instruments for his jihad (at least not yet). His followers are some of the most educated Muslims you can find anywhere in the world. It is easier to debate with unarmed educated people than illiterate herders with AK47 who are on an aggressive expansionary jihad.

There was no need to have killed over 300 of his followers. He was arrested and was granted bail subsequently. Nigerians are crying for the rule of law. You have to face the Shiite and leave Nigerians out of your sectarian rivalry. Trying to blackmail Nigeria for support against your territorial/ideological rivals won't work.

Follow the rule of law and hold El Zakzaky accountable through a tranparent judicial process. Show the court why he should be killed or jailed. If you cannot convince the court to agree with you then you dont have any right to keep him any longer. Is it not the same you that released hundreds of Boko Haram terrorists who have carried out extreme barbarity against Nigerians from prison. Are they not more dangerous jihadists than El Zakzaky and his wife whom the courts have asked you to release?

You should know that if Buhari himself was arrested and denied freedom extrajudicially the same Nigerians will still call for his release. When Babangida clamped Buhari in solitary confinement, Nigerians still clamored for his release despite the human rights atrocities committed by him when in government.

The Fulani jihadist openly carry guns and occupy, destroy and target other people's property hundreds of kilometres away from their own states (or countries). They have not been arrested and tried for murder. All manner of excuses are being giving to cover their heinous criimes against humanity. What do you want Nigerians to say?

You can still write a wake up piece to the South West governors without infusing misleading narratives. Yes, the South West is living on past glory. The cocoa renewal initiative was accelerated during the Olagunsoye Oyinlola period. Ondo and Osun made strides then with new cocoa farms. The northern Nigeria is poor. It is a fact known to every human being on earth. It will take over 200 years to close the gap if no one does anything again in the South. The same El Rufai is currently cutting down the productive sector of his state in one of the most bitter ethnic, sectarian segregation in the history of Nigeria. Trying to replace the people who have been the backbone of the state's manpower with his own ethnic/religious group is a disaster in waiting. There's no where development is measured by the amount of aids (from Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation or whomever) or loans received, Mr. Ojudu. El Rufai knows what he is saying than you understand him.

Firstly, you seem to be using regionalism and parliamentary system of government interchangeably. They are not synonymous. The former is an administratIve division while the latter is a political system. This is one of the confusions in the narrative of the advocates of the parliamentary system. You have to clear the confusion before any meaning can be made of your position.

It is not. Wastages and corruption have always been in Nigeria. It is in all the systems we have tried; parliamentary, presidential and military.

All you need to do is to look at the coup speech that heralded the collapse of the parliamentary system in 1966.

The young Major Chuckuma Kaduna Nzeogu stated emphatically in the speech that "The aim of the Revolutionary Council is to establish a strong united and prosperous nation, free from corruption and internal strife".

If the republic was an Eldorado as it is being painted, why bother reestablishing it? Mind you, they had to wipe out a section of the first generation of political leaders to prove their point. They didn't just wake up to hijack the system. They were idealistic just like you. They were into all this parliamentary system presidential system thing too. More than that they were more aggressive in taking steps to "correct the systematic corruption" of the day.

By far the deepest cause of the so-called wastage is self interest which is a variation of self preservation in a country that has no one loyal to it. Self preservation manifests in primitive acquisition of material things and positioning the future for the individual, family members, clan and then ethnic group in that order.

What you see are people making money off the government for their children or preserving positions for their kins or filling up agencies, parastatals positions with their clan or outrightly establishing agencies for their tribe. These increase the cost of running the government beyond any other measure. No parliamentary system will ever curb that.

Thirdly, to make a "sincere comparison" of the economic performance during the parliamentary system and the presidential system to someone who has a prefix Dr. before his name is assumed to mean employing globally recognize, time tested economic indices, right? Ok.

Here we go - the population of Nigeria in 1963 was 48m, in 1966 it was 51m. In 1999 the population was 119.3m and by 2014, the projected population was 176.5m. The GDP in 1963 was $4.2b, $6.4b in 1966. In 1999 Nigeria's GDP was $35.87b and $569b in 2014.

Per capita GDP in 1963, 1966 and 2014 are $874, $804 and $3,221 respectively. Life expectancy was 39.45 years in 1963; 40.84 years in 1966. it was 53.30 years in 2014. Infant mortality was 196 death per thousand in the 1960s, it is 65 now.

There were 5 universities in the entire country, Ibadan, Nsuka, Zaria, Ife and Lagos until 1970. More universities were established by the federal and state governments between 1979-1983 than the whole 12 years of the first republic.

We currently have over 120 universities in the country, which means that Nigeria produced fewer university graduates to run its economy in the 1960s than now. There are more doctors and nurses per 1000 persons now. There were fewer primary school and secondary schools then than now.

Fewer villages, towns and cities had electric power in the 1960s. The hydro-electric plant in Kainji was built by the Europeans. Only government offices and few homea had telephones and few homes had television. The Lagos-Ibadan expressway was not constructed until 1978. Hospitals were mostly in the cities with little access to healthcare services by the majority rural people. Public healthcare delivery is better now than then; there are more University teaching hospitals now, over 26 federal medical centres running alongside state's and private facilities.

More dams were built in the four years of 2nd republic than 12 years of 1st republic. There was a massive spending on the Steel Plant in Ajaokuta to jumpstart the industrial economy in the 2nd republic. It was sadly abandoned by military governments thereafter. More Nigerians lived in mud houses in villages than cement block homes in the 1960s. From 2006-2015 more Nigerians owned their own homes (cement block, zinc roof) more than at any time in the history of Nigeria.

The 1960s economy was largely agragrian. Export was raw agricultural products. Foreign ownership characterized the industrial and retail sectors of the economy in the 1960s as against the current indigenous ownership structure. Government dominance in the first republic's economy is visible in the construction of monuments.

The financial institutions and markets were weak and rudimentary in the 1960s. Nigeria's banks and the capital markets are stronger, diversified and capitalized now than the 1960s.

Nigeria was already inching towards a private sector driven economy in 2014 with a GDP projection of $1trn in 2020 that would have made it an upper-middle income country before the sudden "change". It moved remarkably from agriculture led system to a service sector driven. Foreign capital inflow in form of FDI was top in Africa. The middle-class grew exponentially up to 2014.

But now, they said everyone should find his way back to the village to live in huts with thatched roof and gathering fruits.

Corruption will always thrive in government as long as the foundation of the country remains. If you like introduce "angelimentry" system of government.

There is nothing like less creation of pilitical offices. That was also the forceful but myopic argument supporting reduction/merging of government ministries in 2015. The socalled reduction of ministries has not impacted positively in any significant way on the cost of running government. It has changed nothing. There are even more brazen insertion of bogus expenditure in the budget of the socalled nimble ministries than at anytime before. Fewer ministries, more expenditure.

If you like change to emirate system or the Vatican model, what you think you saved in one section will go in another direction. If you don't give money to "clerics for prayers" in exchange for intelligence, you will release 10 times of it to armed groups in exchange for kidnapped victims. What you don't spend on education because your people don't go to school, you end up spending 5 times of it on RUGA Settlements or Cattle Colonies across.

Meanwhile, the parliamentary system of government you are advocating was practiced in Nigeria from 1954 - 1966. The results were bitterness, acrimony, killings, arson, trump-up allegations, exclusion of minority tribes, wanton destruction of property and alleged corruption. So much was the ethnic suspicIon that the Mid-West voted for a separate region. It (the turn of events) eventually culminated in a brutal military coup and a civil war.

What do you think has changed? What is the level of national unity existing in Nigeria presently compared to the late 50s and early-mid 60s?

What is the level of Nigeria's organizational ability today to withstand such experiment at this time? Israel today does not have a government but the country is still functioning. Nigeria today is with a government (even in a presidential system) but the security has broken down completely, how do you reconcile that?

Have you considered the practice of calling election at the slightest inconvenience of the coalition in the parliamentary system? Where will we get the money to run elections at every disagreement between politicians? Where is the INEC impartiality and technical/logistical ability?

The cost effectiveness of the parliamentary system is the funniest part. Does it mean we would not budget for constituency offices and legislative aides and the tools to assist the lawmakers in their duties? Does it mean that the legislative oversights will automatically cease?

To just sit down in Europe and admire their system without consideration for the enormous challenges they are facing and the peculiarity of our situation is very cheap. Many of you are in perpetual trial and error mode as if the lives of human beings are not important, it seems.

Many were advocating for a military-like dictator to just WIPE OUT corruption and provide "good governance/leadership" and "everything will just fall into place". How is that panning out now with Buhari?

And when the error starred them in the face they will just move on to another rhetoric without any sign of remorse or the courtesy of an apology to the people whose lives have been affected negatively.

We practiced parliamentary system for 12 years when the ethnic, tribal and clannish tendencies were not that manifest but it didn't work out, it failed and eventually cost millions of lives. We have practiced the presidential system of government for 24 years (1979-1983 inclusive) and things are getting out of hand. Does it not suggest that it has nothing to do with any system of government? Does it not tell you that there's a fundamental issue that needs to be addressed?

It was for election purpose. They know the psyche of the people. The tendency to jubilate because of simple "we will". Even without putting a single pin on the ground "we will" is so powerful.

They are now continuing the deception by diverting attention to Ondo seaport consideration so that the gullible ones will think they are still on it. Can they not do the two? Can the consultant not be called back to make corrections?
