Courtesy isn't something to be bargained.

It is ideal to say thank you/please when people do something for us or when requesting for help.

The manner he said the food should be cover sound authoritative and no appreciation. How can ur friends wife dish food for u and u dictate for it to be covered without showing courtesy.

Some little things like this matters alot and goes a long way but many take it for granted like it doesn't matter.

Even if truly busy, One thing thats certain is that he isn't a "thank you or please" saying person. If not he would have at least said i am busy, please help cover the food.
