Hi nairalanders. I'm about to do my international passport, and totaly i'm confuse, i spent much time searching on google for weeks i'm yet to decide what is best for my future, is not easy to make such decision. That's why am here to seek an advice from public, i'm in my early 20's with nigeria being my country of birth, and also eligible to be citizen of cameroon through my parents who are 100% cameroonians based in nigeria for almost 3 decades, we recently travel to cameroon, i love the place and the people are friendly, very organize country with law abiden citizen. What i noticed in my short visit to cameroon. One can't even buy bus ticket without
cameroon national identity card, or lodge in a hotel, or rent a house without idendity card, for foreigners, they must provide all necessery document in order to be issued ticket, is very rare to hear the indigines discusing politics publicly no tribalism no religions sentiment, and its citizen has the equal right Irrespective of tribes,

I still have strong believe in Nigeria and no matter happened here in Nigeria God bless my nation

I hope you know that that being born in
Nigeria does not make you a Nigerian . You are a Nigerian by birth only if either or both of your parents are Nigerians also. That is according to Nigeria's constitution.

However, if your reason for choosing Cameroon is just material and no other lofty reason then I will advise you not to denounce Nigerian citizenship. If you listen to those who have never seen an airport talkless of travelling abroad, then you r doomed.

My Advice: I have lived in UK and US for over 20years.

If you r going to France only, then take your Cameroon passport.

But if your destination is one of these countries-USA, UK, Australia, Canada, New Zealand and finally Republic of Ireland, please, stay away from that shit called Cameroon Passport.

Go to France and see how your brothers are suffering in Slums and Calais to Dover with Cameroon passport.

The only Cameroonian i ever met in USA was wasting away in Immigration Detention Centre while Nigerians usually get each other back

Don’t listen to ignorant Nigerians telling you to take Cameroon passport cos that shit won’t take you anywhere here compare to Nigerian passport.

Hhmm.... Just curious, is this difference really reason enough to decide one's nationality?

In 2013, the B1 visa refusal rate in Cameroon was 37.3% and that of Nigeria was 35.1%. Though both have increased with Cameroon being almost 60% now and Nigeria chasing 70%, I think what Nigeria really has is higher number of applicants which makes this 10% difference to translate into a high number. This higher number of applicants stems from two facts: first, Nigeria is far more populated and second, Cameroonians apply for French visa more than they apply for the US visa (going by the available stats). I think the higher rejection rate in Nigeria is because of more people trying to game the system and getting caught while at it. The genuine ones who want to visit and go back home or those that want to study still get their Visa. The problem is when you want to use a visitor's Visa to migrate (which is mostly the case in Nigeria).

Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying the difference rejection rate is insignificant but I believe it's just not enough to decide one's nationality. This is especially now that countries are moving towards the less subjective point based immigration system where nationality doesn't count (Nigerians are performing great here). Again, Cameroon's lack of recognition for dual citizenship is also a flag to consider. You'd likely find yourself denouncing the passport later and there's no telling how rosy that would be.

I could be wrong though.

Actually, you are spot on. On a trip there, an indigene was saying he wishes he was Nigerian, thinking Nigerians don't have issues with visas. For those that have visited here, they are "blown away" by Nigerian infrastructure. To lots of Cameroonians, choosing Nigeria would be a no-brainer with the size of the economy and attendant opportunities - eventually, it's a personal choice, hopefully driven by deeper factors than visa success rate.

Look, if you go to Nigerian passport office and apply for a passport purely on the fact that you were born in Nigeria when none of your parents are Nigerians, you won't be issued a passport. While filling the passport application form you have to fill information about yourself parent's origin. If he however you lie that your parents are indegenes of Nigeria you are likely to get the passport. I can assure you that those people you spoke of lied their way into those acquisitions. If they had told the truth they would have been turned down.

If these people venture in the future into something like politics, they would be bursted.

OP from which area of Cameroon do you come from? I'm guessing Ejagham. Twelve years ago I did employ a Cameroonian who had spent his entire life in Nigeria. He moved to Cameroon to acquire a passport too. Just so you know Cameroon does not allow dual nationality. You lose your Cameroonian nationality when you acquire another. That should change though when Biya goes.

Every month I meet plenty of Nigerians who trying to acquire a Cameroonian passport to travel overseas. With some luck and plenty of money a few do get it. The process of obtaining a Cameroonian ID card and passport has been made complicated even for citizens.

You stand a better chance getting a visa to most countries with a Cameroonian passport. I am 100% Cameroonian but my surname is common with the Igbos too. If I had a way of changing it would have gladly done because while out of the country most people do take me for a Nigerian, which comes with plenty of prejudice. I chosed not to give my kids that surname to disconnect them from that prejudice.

Most of the things you observed about Cameroon during your short visit is correct. Tribalism is a problem across the world. Even the English don't see eye to eye with the Scots. However tribalism isn't much of a problem in Cameroon. The Anglophone crisis is more of politics than tribalism. I have been on nairaland long enough to know Nigeria has a serious problem of Tribalism.

In Cameroon mosques and churches face each other. Never heard of an argument between being a Christian or Muslim ..Most Christians celebrate Ramadan , visiting Muslims in their neighborhood for free meals. My best friend is a Muslim and every Ramadan I do remit him something for sweet drinks for the family.

I have a thread on Cameroon. I will drop the address for you to read through. If you have any questions on obtaining your passport do page me. I know one or two persons in high places. Even in the US the people you know could always ease things. It's called connections.

I do not think the Cameroun dual citizen story here is true

Samuel Eto'o Fils, the football legend is a naturalized citizen of Spain since 2007 - How come he is still having a Camerounian Passport?
So is Carlos Kameni and Thomas N'kono - both former goalkeepers for Les Lions Indomptable are both Spanish Citizens by naturalization.
Eto'o 's son Etienne Pineda is a Spanish citizen and yet he plays for Cameroun's U-20 Lioneaux - and almost half of the players in the Indomitable Lions are birth or naturalized citizens of France. So is the law meant for the poor or what ? I beg clear me grin

You noticed all these in how many days? Have you asked those who are visiting Abuja or Lagos for the first time what they think about Nigeria? My point is, you were in a vacation mode and the feeling of newness is easily confused with being better. You were born in Nigeria and you grew up in Nigeria, so I see why you'd feel the pasture is greener on the other side. Anglophone countries only hear about fellow anglophone countries (Nigeria, South Africa, Kenya, Ghana, etc). We don't read much about francophone countries (you probably do cause your parents are from there) so we don't really appreciate thier issues. I'm not saying Nigeria is better but you should know Cameroon has its own problems ranging from secessionism to corruption to not-so-good economy. The police as just as corrupt as they are in Nigeria. Which politics do you want to discuss when the same person has been ruling the country long before you were born? You think they have equal rights and some people want to create thier own country? Are you bilingual?

Cameroon used to be a popular destination for Nigerians (mainly Igbos) cause it allowed them to tap into the francophone market which was non-existent in Nigeria. They also got along well with the business minded Douala people more than they did with the Hausas up North. While things have changed, it's still a relatively peaceful country or, at least, it seems to be. This means less stress and probably longer life span. On the other hand, Nigeria is a bigger country with a more viable and relatively more independent economy. This means more opportunities and more cash flow. With a corruption index of 27 and 25, I don't see any significant difference in that regards. Nigeria has the benefits and issues of bigger, more complex and more dynamic country while Cameroon has the benefits and issues of a smaller and more easy going country.

I know I didn't give a definite answer but I hope I, at least, gave some insights. Whatever you do, know that your choice is not for you alone but for your unborn kids. Seeing that you are qualified for both passports, why not get them all?

Thumps up!
