Please, folks in the house, what's the deal, really?

Why are many Nigerians seemingly averse to the option of adopting kids? Even when they've been waiting years to have kids of their own biologically?

Personally, I seem to be overcome with the idea of adoption. I'd love to have just one child biologically, then adopt one or two others.

But why is it a big deal in Nigeria?

I know the process is filled with lots of protocol. But is that such a deterrent?

Is it expensive, financially?

Is it really hard to love a child that's not your flesh and blood?
As regards the issue of adoption, there are several agencies that deals with the issue of adoption in Nigeria, adoption is nt something hard in nigeria, all you just need to do is to get an attorney that will get all the paperwork done for you.if you are in the US it is very hard to adopt because you need to be home study approve. Adoption in nigeria is easy if u follow the right channel.

Nigerians don't adopt children. Adoption is not for us. We are religious and we have faith in God to help us in areas where we cant help ourself

I check your profile and i saw that you are even a Nigerian and you are asking all this questions

Nigeria is not America. Hope you get me.

Same reason many Nigerians don't bother about any form of insurance also.

This is novel, because I've only ever heard that adoption in Nigeria is very cumbersome. That it literally takes years sometimes to finalise the process.

Nigerians are used to adoption especially men.Its only a woman dt can say who d father of her kids are.
A lot of women will want kids dt are fair in complexion when d husband is dark,or tall etc when d husband is deficient of these qualities.
Others due to insatiable lust will keep bringing home pregnancies dt are not urs and u have no option provided u often have sex with her. So,many families are saturated with adopted kids .
If u doubt me,check dna of all ur kids and u will die of heart attack.

But we're not talking about accidental adoption.

Talking about a conscious decision to adopt.

It because people will tag you barren or impotent.

Moreover, adoption is expensive in Nigeria.
The NGOs lacked adequate supervision. So what happens there is actually selling of children

Financially expensive, yeah?

Can you give a range? For the complete process.

Many people here in Nigeria prefer to buy babies from baby factorys, because they believe it's cheaper, and hussle free.

Personally, if it wasn't for the fact that young girls are being made to get pregnant for the sole purpose of selling their babies, I'd have almost said it's expedient.

But then again, it would never feel right to sell a human being, baby or not.

our way of life is different. Not many people are keen at introducing a 'blood' they know nothing about into a family.

Does it matter? I believe nurturing trumps all of those things.

Because inherently in our African culture....It takes a village to raise a child....Why adopt something you already own? We need to remain true to our culture and not try to inherit a foreign culture that is alien to the fabric of our existence.

You mean you can raise children without legally making them yours?

Stigma. Culture. These are some of the reasons why Child adoption is not done openly in Nigeria. People resort now to literally feigning pregnancy and adopting or buying kids (from baby factories) secretly to pass them on to the public as their biological own. As for the cultural aspect of this, people see having kids as investment. So adopting and raising someone's else kid ,when there is likelihood that the parents may claim back the kid sometime in the future doesn't look like a good investment to many.

Hmmm. I think there's a lot of facts in here .

Who told you adoption in nigeria is cumbersome? that is a big lie! Adoption does'nt take years to process. I have seen over three couples that adopt babies without even passing much stress, it can only take time to process in other european countries, you can even proceed orphanage home to adopt, all you just need to do is to sign official paper that you will take care of the child in your custody. The problem adoption is facing in nigeria is the issue of ritual, child labour and trafficking.

God gave woman womb to bring forth children and multiply. A woman somewhere is is encouraging giving birth to 1 child and adopting 2-3 children from outside. Please, what happens to your womb after giving birth to 1 child?

This issue is what most European and American people are passing through... low birth rate which leads to decreasing population. Who knows, tomorrow, you will come out and encourage Nigerians to stop giving birth but rather adopt dogs and cats as children (which is currently practised in most European countries).

People should learn to accept the fact that, just as the world is divided into continents, so are the cultures and traditions different among us all. STOP TRYING TO PUSH AMERICAN CULTURE DOWN OUR THROAT.

This isn't a matter of adopting a culture just for the heck of it.

How's it even a culture that's peculiar to Americans?

It's an idea that I believe has merits on its own.

@emboldened undecided undecided Never have I ever read such weirdness.

The way we do adoption in Nigeria is quite different from that of the westerners. Adoption is popular but is not documented. Parent will willingly give his / her child to relative without any document or agreement.

Yeah. But you don't have legal rights or control over that child.

That's just pure service to humanity.

On the contrary, it is very popular, it is just not documented through the ministry and legal framework.

There are lots of people who have adopted other people's kids in nigeria, and raise them like their own. Unlike the whites who make sure they complete the paperwork, nigerians sometimes dont bother.

you are so me... Personally, when ready I'll love to get married to a woman who will prefer we have one or two kids!!!

Like can't people see overpopulation?! well it all boils down to the fact that parents just want to give their selfish love to their biological kids. end of story.

I have 2 kids and might adopt when Bae and I are older and the boys are off to start their own lives.

Not for our sakes, because we have kids, but for the sake of some orphan out there who deserves a good life.

Childless couples need to develop the mindset that adoption is very much an act of kindness to a poor orphaned baby in dire need of a home.

Besides economic pressures, we Nigerians probably don't adopt because we are not very kind people.
