I'm Ghanaian. My Ghanaian aunt who's married to a Ghana-Nigerian have moved to Ghana, and when she's gisting with her kids in Yoruba it's as if they're FIGHTING. I'm not kidding. Even when they're gisting on phone it's as if they're FIGHTING. Up till today they still speak aggressively. In Ghana the Gas, who migrated from Ile Ife are the "aggressive" talkers. Lots of them are into boxing

NoToPile:
Never had too much wahala neighbors

1st apartment - block of flats , nobody has time for each other , we pay our dues to iyawo landlord Till we moved out.

2nd apartment -

only us in the compound, very quiett street. you we didn't even know our neighbors till lockdown that all the men started coming out for security.

But the compound behind us, they will always bang the gate by 1am, when everybody is sleeping everyday and their own neighbors will lock the gate maybe for security reasons, he won't even make attempt to call on phone and start banging gate middle of the night disturbing 2 streets.
Then one day kasala burst at 1am see fight between the night crawler and his neighbors since then no knocking at 1am again

There's a lime tree at our backyard that spills over to theirs, they will throw stuffs at the tree, do orishirishi, send their children to try and climb fence to pluck lime, okay pluck if you want to since the tree spils over to your compund, dont throw stuffs or climb fence lailai they must throw sticks.

I planted ugu and these peeps sent their children to use a ladder climb up and drag ugu to their compound, never seen this kain people before. The most annoying part is I don't even know these neighbors face to face.

The compound beside us to the left every 10pm one of the 6flats there pray, they actually use a gong during praise and worship that one town crier uses I think and I usually pity their own direct neighbors

The compound beside us to the right is a big church their kitchen is just by the fence, if they talk there its like in our rooms, always cooking something making so much noise. So apart from the mega speakers during services which has a time frame the main disturbance is this kitchen wahala which can be anytime.

The 3 compounds surrounding us have their own issues the interesting thing is apart from the church I can't put a face to those involved in these issues.

carry pumping machine switch enter em house because say na em be oldest tenant...on top of that decides to pump water mostly when people are sleeping...em get luck say the kind ibo people wey dey follow am share compound no like wahala...the idiot na short yoruba dwarf...and we no pass 3 for compound o...three bed for that matter....some people get mind sha

I think your co-tenant a can invest in wireless switches for four or five users. The signal receiver can be placed anywhere outside or inside the "veteran tenant" home while everyone has their own switch.

With just a press from the comfort of your room, you can turn it on or off. I think it should cost less than 10k on AliExpress and anyone with a fair knowledge of DIY can connect it to an existing NEPA connection.

Alternatively, you can use wireless sockets (costs around 7k or so) that you can control the pump from your phone locally or from anywhere in the world with a SIM or WiFi enabled type of wireless switch.

For those with overnight noisy neighbours or that have the overnight company of grinding generator noise behind their window, I think earmuffs can come in handy when they sleep.

For those with neighbours that fetch water from water tanks they are not willing to help to sustain, just electronic locks will suffice. Only you or any other same neighbour will have the passcode or the switch to unlock when you wanna fetch. Just pray bad belle neighbours do not vandalize it.

Those are the solutions I will definitely apply if I were in these situations.

Honestly reading thru these submissions, Nigerians especially and maybe Africans as a whole are much tolerant. And I think it's more because of the communal culture that we have, which is not a bad culture. In the west, people get the police called on 'em for making few decibels of unwarranted noise for sustained periods. In fact, in several places you may not set eye on your neighbour or say anything more than hi for six months after you move in, and not minding being some introverted person I don't think I will relish such lonesome environment. No generator of course, but if there has to be any source of fumes from any source, the CO (carbon monoxide) alarm - which is a must for every homes - will ensure no one engages in life-endangering ventures that produce toxic fumes.

The unduely snubbish, this-project-does-not-concern-me-type of street neighbour is the one I've experienced of recent. Before my arrival, he'd some unpleasant clash with majority of street peeps in landlord meetings and the usually refer to him as "the rich man of the street" which to me is more of mockery than praise because I will likely pay his monthly salaries from my own salary.

He will not partake in any financial commitments from the landlords and the day I witnessed that personally was the day I ruled him out of consideration and immediately tagged him as having a serious personality disorder. He never give lifts to street neighbours in his car. In fact he will roll down the windows, then tell you that you shouldn't be angered for driving past you as it's not in his manner to give lifts. I mean who does that. The wife is nice and an almost direct opposite of all the man is, but if he ever spots her giving lifts in her car, stopping by to greet neighbours or even sound remotely patronising of any neighbour, that day she is in trouble. So she does good things secretly.

Contribute money to bring NEPA light into the street, no he won't. Money to construct street gate, no. Money to grade the street road, no. Of course many other peasant families in the street default payment too but those ones are understandable. But I don't expect such terrible attitude from "the-wealthy-man-of-the-street".

So I decided to rattle him a little. I got a couple of those 15k solar street floodlights and gave it to a carpenter landlord on the street with specific instructions to him to make sure it is installed on every other pole and ensures that the pole close to his compound is among the "every other pole" skipped.

One neighbour of his met with me that he loved to have solar in his home but he could only afford little money. So I gave him one of my fairly used batteries and encouraged him to try his best to get solar panels. He had lights in his home in no time and it shocked that other nutcase that how could this peasant landlord neighbour of his afford solar in his home while he himself does not. Few weeks after I noticed he too went to subscribe for MTN lumous set. Jealous right? Yeah he was. Lumous that I wouldn't even advice my enemy to go for.

Thank God I'm even the reserved type, so I have no reason to crave his company or his friendship.

My neighbour is a witch.... A rope in front of my house, tied by me for hanging my clothes has now become a bone of contention... They all have theirs oh but all prefer hurrying to hang on mine and leave theirs just to make me feel bad, they also leave their houses to my frontage to deprive me of sleep in the name of gisting.

Aaaah...mine are a dating couple. They fight to finish, lady will curse and cuss...tell the guy to return all the cash she loaned him, she'll then take Uber and return to her father's house...3 weeks later, she go return, smiling! It happened 3 times, and since I moved to the place, she became familiar with my wife, each time they fight she comes crying to our apartment.
Last fight I witnessed was bloody! Broken glass, windows and plates! She threatened the guy with a knife. I stepped in and separated them tactfully. I advised her to go back to her dad...as I saw her to the cab I asked why she would say her guy should die only for her to later desire his d.ick. she laughed. Anyway I spoke to the guy thinking I was doing a good thing, cos I advised him to stay away from her for a while to gather his thoughts...I was a fool...the guy turned out to dislike me!
Anyway, I've moved out from there... but I know they're still together!

There is a table at d back of my window that a laundry man uses to press cloth. This my neighbor na Igbo man, anytime he comes back from his shop, that table na his resting zone even as early as 5-6 pm, he will just come and lie on the table. This table is directly opposite my window. His presence won't make me talk or gist freely in my room as he eavesdrops on whatever I say because he understands Yoruba language very well ,but anytime he and his wife want to gossip, they talk in their native language which non of the tenants understand. The two of them have made my window as their gossiping place. They don't talk in their rooms o but will come to my window to gist and gossip.

Lol.

They don't give you the freedom to talk gossip.

My neighbour is terrible. He wouldn't allow my children to enter his apartment while his child comes to my apartment almost daily to play with my children and enjoy everything in my home. The most annoying is that his wife doesn't work, she is a full housewife thereby engaging herself in backbiting.
then stop his children from getting into ur apartment..nah wah..na so go buy problem for urself

My neighbor is a liar. She's always complaining of generator fume entering her room. I've checked several times and reverse has been the case.

Edit: For those quoting me hurriedly, she lied. The location of the gen is four windows away from her. The tenants between my room and hers have never complained about fumes getting into their rooms. Thank you cool

You said 4 windows away is a lie?

Brosthe former house I lived generator fumes climb upstairs from our neighbors verandah up to our own and we are not even directly above him, it was choking and we didn't even complain too, we just leave the sitting room to the room. Thank God the flat is all these old big wide houses with enough room. After sometime landlord that stays on the ground floor with him took it up, seems he went to service it and then the smoke stopped.

The fact that the other neighbors are not complaining doesn't mean they are not affected and wherever the wind blows the fumes go.

4 windows away doesn't mean she's lying.

That smoke kills.

A neighbor is fond of accelerating his car so hard all in the name of 'warming his car' every morning for at least 20mins. The noise and air pollution that results from his action worries me greatly.

Another one is fond of praying out loud like his god is deaf, won't hear his supplication if uttered silently. This same neighbor, at the beginning of every month at very early hours say 4:30am, disturbs my peace by singing out loud in praises to God for seeing him through a new month.....

If you have a sound set, increase the volume of the music any time he starts his prayer.

That's bad. We don't do that in Ghana here. Not to compare, but it's not a common thing here. Over here if you have any issues with your neighbours, just inform your landlord and you'd be given good solution. The landlords are very respected
