Physics as a course is the bedrock of science and engineering.

My son graduated with a second class upper at Unilag, did his masters in physics at Unilag, got employed by AXA as a back end programmer for about 18 months, and presently on scholarship in the United State as a graduate assistant in a university and also studyibg for PhD in physics all paid for by the States.

The gospel truth is that, you must first have passion for what you do to be able to excel in it.
Understand the course very well, you could become an inventor. Physics is beautiful
`

would he have done better if he studied computer science /computer engineering ?

there is a course called computer science /engineering

Well, I won't tell you to run but the truth is physics and chemistry graduates end up in secondary school classrooms.
you are very myopic. Physics and chemistry are the foundations of science and graduated in such fields have almost limitless opportunities. It might interest you to know that a chemistry graduate is qualified to in areas as diverse as patent law.

Most of the notable Inventors and scientists are all physicist, this is a very good discipline and I will encourage your to continue and soar high in your choice of course, I know you don't see job adverts with a physic degree, but that's because you've been looking at the wrong place.

Most adverts on programming and coding, go with a physics degree and not only computer science degree as it where.

N.B: As a Physicist it is expedient and sacrosanct that you know programming, coding, Big Data, Data Analysis or something more technical and complex. Great Physicist, I'll see you at the top. wink
Regards.
Shey you dey whine me ni? Coding in physics or computer science? Fact is that as a physicist, the usual(and usually realistic) job opportunity in Nigeria is in the classroom as a physics teacher. Pls, dont let them whine you. Do your best and go for masters if you can to pursue a career in lecturing.

Notable Physics Graduates

Angela Merkel

Elon Musk

Jimmy Carter

Oleg Deripaska

To do well in physics especially at post graduate level requires a high IQ
So a physic graduate should do well in other areas

It's only useless if you were born to study psychology, medicine or one of variety of socio-sciences. If you want a small insight into the architecture of God, physics is the only route.

Thumbs up for this wonderful post. Physicists are versatile and will be ahead of many of the supposedly juicy courses in the market if well complemented. Many Nigerians are deeply stupid that's why they never see good in anything. One even condemned microbiology few days ago on this forum. They prefer to study French and fine arts or Islamic Studies.

Those on the list are alive and contemporary figures that have thrived AWAY FROM PHYSICS
Two of them are billionaires which is very important to Nigerians who will ask "who physics epp?"
What did Einstein achieve outside of Physics

The point is what you study does not have to shape your life

That's one of the best courses. Physics is the basis of engineering and gives you a very good footing to understand any form of engineering if you want to.

Forget the advice of going for civil engineering. The best thing you would do for yourself right now is to start learning code. Learn programming and combine it with your physics degree and the sky is the limit.
Another great post. Nigerians are the only people who condemn STEM courses. Advanced nations are ready to engage them because they know that they are crucial to production and thus economy. Nigeria is gone educationally if not for few like you.

You will be shocked. One well known fact in the community of physics is that virtually all problems of practical relevance either have no analytical solutions or if they do, exceedingly cumbersome to render them impractical. As a physicist, you will be developing(actually using) numerical methods to solve practical problems in physics.(Anyone here familiar with "Numerical Recipes in Fortran/C++"?) Basically you will be building a lot of very complex code. These are skills that are immediately portable to the "conventional" markets.

Op please do not pay attention to those negative comments expecially the one that asked you to go and take jamb and start all over again.the gospel truth is,in Nigeria, what you studied in school doesn't really matter anymore this days, but, your background will help you alot to transition to other lucrative professions incase you want to.for example, a physicist can easily transition to being a computer, programmer, computer engr, electrical and electronics, geophysics and lots more.just concentrate in your studies, know what you are doing and develop passion in other related professions.

So true. Advanced nations know that production is key to advancement and staying up to date economically. STEM courses like physics are the bedrock of production and it is only on a Nigerian forum you will see some of those deeply silly comments about Physics. They are looking for who will employ them into an office from where they can earn large and still steal.

That it didn't favour some people doesn't mean yours will be the same.

Physic is basis for all engineering.
In Nigeria, You'll find opportunities in solar industries, engineering services ( this is very broad!)

I studied chemistry but work as an engineer today. If I were to go back to undergraduate for a science degree, I'd rather do physic ( but no regret)
Is it that they made u brand ambassador for physics abi who tell u say u go get better work in Nigeria .

It does not matter what you study. Some folks did not even go to school and they are fine. It's all about grace.

I studied physics and I am doing fine.
You are in 300 level. Just complete the program first, there are many other options for you after graduation. You are qualified for many Msc programmes.

BSc Physics is a fine discipline. The Nigerian education system is becoming obsolete and all theory. That's a problem because European countries teach such degrees alongside programming languages like python, this makes the knowledge applicable to real life problems and inventions are like a daily thing. Space travel just got commercialized last weekend and scientists would be launching a hotel on space (voyager station) come 2027, flying cars would be in the air before the end of THIS decade (courtesy of Slovakia-based company, Klein Vision). So please do not give up, go beyond just cramming those photocopied notes from your lecturers, read good modern textbooks in the library and open up your mind. The world needs physicist to take us closer to the future.

There are Physics libraries because not all of us have the brain to handle physics

I suppose that I should have qualified my statement with "in my opinion" given the admittedly subjective nature of this discussion, but the truth is that as long as all ponderable matter comprises of sub-atomic particles, and all of Gods creations are composed of them, physics is the only route to gaining insight into the architecture of God.
