The system has become modern day slavery. Those ibo men go to the village to bring those boys and then turn them to slaves, they make them sleep in the shop, while oga madam brings food for them the next day, she instructs some of the boys to go home and clean up the children's poo. Their oga sometimes delay in settling them after end of service, he might even accuse the boys of stealing his money and then hand them over to the police to be beaten up and detained just because he doesn't want to settle them.
Having seen the maltreatment become popular among their ogas, they either japa with any amount they can steal from their oga & start life afresh or join yahoo as a means of escape.

School to me is just another exposure to particular field ideas but the main wholistic education is exposure to the reality of the society and school is part of the society!

Sounds like normalised child labour, exploitations and abuse to me. I can bet my left balls that most nigerian ignoramuses on here will disagree.

We will be left with those that barely know what they are doing. The young boys in SW would rather ride okada. Fast money, then they think they have arrived. They end up impregnating the girl that should ordinarily spend 2 years to learn a skill which is now a year because she done get belle.

That's the core problem: the love of money, get rich quick and very poor morals.

This article focuses on the Igbos. Yoruba's are still involved in the apprenticeship scheme but do not really k ow the depth.

As long as young boys have Yahoo boys and other vices as bad models, things will stay the same.

Way back when you go to get your hair done, you will almost beg for breathing space because as the shop owner is making the hair, almost 6 girls are struggling to see what she is doing. Both the ones that smell good and the ones that don’t.

The good part was you don’t have to be giving attachment (I haven’t met just one lady that loves doing this). These days ehn, na just you and the hairdresser with her crying and restless toddler. cheesy

I agree with you, most time this oga's don't even settle the guys after many years of service, once they know it's almost time to settle them they will accuse them of theft.

Seen the Nwa Boy Apprenticeship system with a friend of mine.

It's one thing I admired so so much.

So sad if this is true.

Tochukwu was my friend's dad's kinsman.

He did every single menial job without complaint.

I was there when he got his "freedom"

Was great to see.

Madam, we're in the 21st century! Things have changed. People are now upgrading to new models of doing business. This is the computer age.

I have always said it that if Igbo people are not careful, we'll be overthrown in the trading business for which we are currently known by Yorubas and other smarter tribes who value education and follow trends. I'm not talking about real business like real estate, tourism, media etc because I know that Yorubas are the owners of those. But at least the trading that we do, let us try and be upgrading and following trends.

How many "nwa boyi" does Jeph Bezos and the likes have None! They employ smart workforce and pay them for their services. But you want Igbos to remain in the analog age. Who will even agree to give out their children for such slavery when there are better skills to learn that can help them survive in this modern age Only an uninformed person will do that!

Seems young people don't want to serve for long again and there's also the case of those masters that refuse to settle the nwa boys after long years of service.

Let's even say nwa Boi takes longer years, what of the Yoruba people that back then they learn work for 1-3 years max and do freedom still young people dont want to learn nowadays ,lots of these vulcanizers, mechanics, hairdressers etc are beginning to lack omo ise

I feel it has to do with everything being in the fast lane nowadays.

But there are still some who are ready to serve,

So many factors caused the decline of imu ahia or igba boy.

Social media factor exposing the things that use to be a secret.

Pressure from parents. Many Nigerian parents put a lot of pressure on their sons to start bringing in money to assist the family and this pressure most times pushes male children into fast lane (crime).

Greed of our today ladies that now look down on people doing legitimate jobs while running after guys doing illegal things just because they dish out money and material things more.

All these factors discourage male youths from being patient in learning trades, instead they succumb to fast lanes which are mostly crime related.

Because they we have been thought to think that theory is more prestigious than practical

We regarded Universities as better than polytechnics

And thanks to our colonized minds and the industrial culture of the time, white collar (desk) jobs became regarded to the despising of vocational (handy) work.

Many of them would come to learn skills and businesses after graduation from universities or polytechnics. Unemployment will reset their brains. It is already happening. The era of keeping boys or girls for years in apprenticeship business has gone.
What is essense of learning a job for 10 years?
In the future, many would learn jobs poorly and this would lead to proliferation of vocational training schools with government regulating them.
