Dear Great Nairalanders

I am in urgent need of your advice on a decision I am about to make that could shape my life and my young family in about few months from now.

I am currently running successful businesses which give me a steady minimum of N1.5M per month with a potential for expansion. I have been nursing the idea of going to UK on a study Visa by September this year with the hope that I can get a well paying job that could surpass my current earnings here in naijja. I also intend to keep my naija business running but we all know trusting people with kind of investment can be tricky and risky.

What assurance do I have about earning more and having a better life in UK? What happens to my businesses I already built up in Naija? What happens to my properties here in naija?

Your advice will be of great help at this critical decision making moment of my life. Thank you

That's about $6000 you make per month. Only a few percentage of UK citizens make that a month. What makes you think you can make higher when you get there. What I'd advise is increase your stream of income. I was once in your shoes but businesses really boom in Nigeria all you need is the right business ideas and you will always be good to go. So garner more business ideas and invest more. That way if you are relocating you will know you just wanna move to a better country and not for more financial opportunities

Thanks @Nozino. There are no assurances. Even the Queen can’t guarantee what you want.

Exactly! I understand. I still need the opinion of those already with experience or were in my shoe to help in this decision making. Thanks

No the Queen needs you! She needs people who will add to her slavery line of monthly or weekly salary divide.

She takes hers via the taxes and u take the remainder.

Is that not good enough for you?

You can frown at my loaded words up there.

The truth is, you do not need UK at all.

However, if you arm yourself with the rigth knowledge, you need to go there to easily Legally cash out In Billions. I mean it!!!

You earn N1.5M per month and you want to travel to the UK? To do what?

You obviously haven't travelled abroad before; please go there frequently, spend a relatively long period of time (Not the regular 2 or 3 weeks), mingle with people in the diaspora so you can understand the system; you can then come back to Nigeria and take a final decision.

We can almost bet you would stay back home and decide to just go for holidays.

Cheers.

From a holistic point of view, the long-term benefits of moving to the UK outweighs whatever it is you think you're getting in Nigeria. If not for anything, the value of the UK currency and the better life for your kids.

As for your investments, if you can't find a capable, trustworthy person that can help you manage your businesses here in Nigeria while you move, then divest them and travel out.
My 2 cents.
Why's dangote and the likes still in Nigeria then.
He should expand his business and become ceo he can go abroad anytime anywhere.

That's a bloody lie, i am currently in UK and life is well here.

You earn what you do, people in UK will surely understand my statements better.

No amenities in Nigeria, but here you get everything you pay for.

Anyone that feels leaving Nigeria is the best for him should do now.

I am here as a student and i know what i have earned within a short period. Shortage or no shortage, there are different means of getting cash.

Note: follow who KNOW ROAD

May you work and never stumble. A lot of people who live(d) abroad, advising the OP not to travel have either over stayed their visas or entered illegally and so couldn’t work the way they are supposed to. That’s why they generalize all relocation stuff as being bad.

Nigeria wo? Nigeria t’o ti tan. Let’s give the OP 5 years to come back and report to this forum on either decision he could have made out of the two.
One thing is certain: the business would have nose-dived. Nigeria’s problems defy all known solutions today.

Concerning your decision to relocate to UK, provided you have a better means of survival over there then I will say yes. But if it is that you going to start at fresh over there why not continue with your business here in 9ja.. atleast with good money you making you can always go to UK and come back for vacation and others... Well my opinion

Stay here in Naija. To earn the equivalent in the UK, you'll have to be earning like £8,000 in London monthly.

I was there 2 months in 2020. I came back just on March 21, 2 days b4 the British lock down.

Bruv, 1.5m a month is good money. You may find it difficult to earn as much after clearing your bills and taxes in the UK. Considering that you're coming with your family is another hassle because of housing issues. In UK, you don't just get any apartment for your family, the house must be certified by the government as convenient and conducive for your family. So that is more expenses.

The big issue is that you are not allowed to work more than 20hrs a week in UK as a student. Now check this out. Average pay is £10 to £15/hr. Let's say you get the max of £15, in a week is £300, a month is £1,200.
Convert this to naira at the current parallel market rate of N775/pound is N930,000 a month. Compare this to the minimum 1.5m you make monthly in Nigeria to the max of 930k in UK

Also remember that the £1,200 is just gross i.e bills exclusive. By the time you pay bills, rent and miscellaneous, you may end up getting just a peanut a month.

My advice for you is, if you can, just send your kids to the UK, stay in Nigeria and manage your business. You can come to the UK from time to time to check on them.

I am a student in the UK so take it from me

I advise you look at your computation again cos NGN1.5m is only about $2608.69 (using the rate as at yesterday i.e. $1 = NGN575).
As at March 2020, the black market rate was about $1 = NGN359, meaning NGN1.5m was about $4,178.

A monthly income of #1.5m is actually not as fantastic as we make it seem, when you consider expenses such as rent, good schools for the kids, food etc..
The Op is doing well (even though we’re not sure of his monthly expenses, volatility of his business terrain etc) but inflation in Nigeria seems to be a recurring decimal.
Moreover, the country seems to be having worse leaders after each bad one.
