"The Ukrainian people are desperately asking for the West to protect our sky. We are asking for a no-fly zone."

This was the impassioned request from a Ukrainian woman who confronted UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson at a news conference on Tuesday.

"Ukrainian women and Ukrainian children are in deep fear because of bombs and missiles which are coming from the sky," Daria Kaleniuk said.

But despite Russian strikes hitting residential areas of Ukraine, and a mounting civilian death toll, there is little sign that the West will implement a no-fly zone. Here's why.

What are no-fly zones?

A no-fly zone refers to any region of airspace where it has been established that certain aircraft cannot fly.

It can be used to protect sensitive areas, such as royal residences, or brought in temporarily over sporting events and large gatherings.

In a military context, a no-fly zone is designed to stop aircraft from entering banned airspace, usually to prevent attacks or surveillance.

It has to be enforced by military means.

That could be surveillance, pre-emptive strikes against defensive systems or bringing down aircraft which enter the restricted area.

A no-fly zone over Ukraine would mean that military forces - specifically Nato forces - would engage directly with any Russian planes spotted in those skies and shoot at them if necessary.

Why won't the West introduce one in Ukraine?

Nato forces engaging with Russian aircraft or equipment risks a rapid escalation.
"You don't just say 'that's a no-fly zone'. You have to enforce a no-fly zone," former US air force general Philip Breedlove told Foreign Policy magazine.

The general, who served as Nato's supreme allied commander from 2013 to 2016, said that while he supports calls for a no-fly zone in Ukraine, it's a very serious decision to take.
"It's tantamount to war. If we're going to declare a no-fly zone, we have to take down the enemy's capability to fire into and affect our no-fly zone."

UK MP Tobias Ellwood, who chairs the Defence Committee, has backed the idea of a partial or total no-fly zone, calling for Nato to intervene due to civilian deaths and alleged war crimes.

But Nato's secretary general Jens Stoltenberg ruled out involvement by the organisation, telling NBC on Monday: "We have no intention of moving into Ukraine, either on the ground or in the air."

UK Defence Secretary Ben Wallace has made it clear that Britain would not help enforce a no-fly zone over Ukraine because fighting Russian jets would trigger a "war across Europe".
Speaking to AFP News, he said: "I won't trigger a European war, but what I will do is help Ukraine fight every street with every piece of equipment we can get to them, and we will support them."

And the US has also ruled it out, for similar reasons.

The extra risk with any escalation in a conflict with Russia is the spectre of nuclear weapons. That fear came into focus after Russian President Vladimir Putin's announcement that he had put Russia's nuclear forces on "special" alert.

Many have interpreted his move primarily as a form of public signalling, rather than indicating a real intent to use such weapons.

But even the faintest hint of a world war which could become a nuclear war means, in spite of terrible scenes of civilians under attack, the likelihood of any no-fly zone in Ukraine is slim to none.

Have no-fly zones been used before?

After the first Gulf War in 1991 the US and coalition partners established two no-fly zones in Iraq to prevent attacks against some ethnic and religious groups. This was done without United Nations backing.

In 1992 during the Balkans conflict, the UN passed a resolution which banned unauthorized military flights in Bosnian airspace.

The UN Security Council also approved a no-fly zone as part of the 2011 military intervention in Libya.

The Bosnian and Libya zones were enforced by Nato forces.

Russia are loosing this war because they don't have any influence in international politics and secondly because they don't control the media

Russia needs to get themselves involved beyond Europe just like China did beyond Asia

China exported their language and culture(through Chinese movies and restaurants)

They exported their technology ( cars and electronic gadgets)

They exported their companies (Tecno, Hawaii and infinix)

They are exporting their intellects who work in other regions of the world and now control Africa in terms of business and Trade

That is the exact thing Russia should do

Export their language, invest in other countries just as china did ( boy this, I don't mean selling of AK 47 and military hardware to rebels)

Export their indigenous companies and invest more in IT and technologies

Export their goods more to Africa and Asia and even South America

Set up international media giants to protect their interests and project their voice just as US did with CNN

Open their border to immigrants (especially skilled immigrants) just as Canada is doing

Lies from AFP, a zionist media propaganda of France.
For the west to declare a No-fly zone over the existing one in Ukraine. It will have to hack into the codes of the current one and change it to be able to declare its No-fly zone. These codes often change by the minute or seconds. The reason the west cannot declare a no-fly zone at this moment in Ukraine.

What else can they do, they can fire missiles from Poland or any country that allows it. This is what Israel has been doing in Syria since its f-16 jet was shut down by Syrian Panstir. They have been using the Lebanese airspace to fire missiles into the Syrian airspace.

If they try this with Ukraine, Russia will declare a no-fly zone over that country and it will mean more war. And more war means, first of all destroying all the air-defense system of such a country like Russia first did using CLUB missiles.

No fly zone would escalate the conflict from regional war to a global catastrophe....

Hmm...

A no-fly zone will certainly bring the West into direct conflict with Russia.

This war was unnecessary. Russia could have used progressively tougher political, economic, diplomatic & social sanctions to frustrate Ukraine being made a NATO member...

That Putin feels annexing Ukraine is the best way to stop Ukraine joining NATO shows that Ukrainians were right all along to be worried about the Russian threat...

Ukraine is an independent nation & reserves the right to defend its territory from external invasion... however, Zelensky needs to also quickly explore a diplomatic avenue out of the impasse while Putin needs to show good faith by halting further attacks & advances so as to give chance for a diplomatic resolution of the matter...

They can only bully 'small' countries.
Ukrainian leader is a war monging JEW that will leads the country to destruction and run to Israel, no any president in his right senses will be fighting Russia without external backing not even UK, but instead of them to profer dialogue and reconciliation they are rather arming Ukraine and sanctioning Russia. None of them offer truce or any ceasefire only sanctioning except France

The request for a no fly zone is most probably the dumbest thing ever said by a Ukrainian politician since this war started. But you can excuse them. It's desperate times..

If given the chance I think I’ll fight with Russia

This was is not just between two countries. It is about an age long ideology of western “supremacy”. They believe everything and every one should be subject to them

They have twisted the media thereby controlling the perception of everyone simple minded.

The west have over the past decade committed atrocities al over the planet.. Libya, afgahanistan, Iran etc.

They would have invaded Russia by now if they hadn’t nuclear and ballistic capabilities..

I stand with Russia and I stand with freedom of thought and conscience.

This war is something that has several grey areas, its not as if Putin is crazy, I mean that guy has been around since 1999 to observe global trends... this is what people don't know or forget quickly.

Russia has a very strong argument as regards this war, which is why the west aka the EU, UK and USA won't and can't do anything to interfere...

Have people asked this question before; if NATO is so much about maintaining the order within the area, why is Russia not part of NATO?

It's unfortunate that Ukraine has a president that is soooooo naive
