Ehen i was going somewhere with that question. And here goes my main important question.

So if you discover that the foetus in the womb is SS what will you and your wife do? Kill the foetus abi? So you and your wife will just be killing a succession of babies in the womb if the test shows they are SS abi?
I'm sure you now realise why I'm pissed off?

Bro, it is 25% chance of having a SS baby out of every pregnancy, unless you and your wife are really really unfortunate, you can’t be “killing” a succession of babies as the probability of all your children being AS is higher which is fair enough.
Whereas miscarriages happen even without anything or genotype issue. (I guess that means the babies are “killing” themselves or the mother’s body is “killing” them)

I think it is also better to terminate the pregnancy than bring the child to the world where it’ll cause emotional, health and financial problems for the parents and child involved.

CVS is less expensive and easier I think, and after having like 2-3 children you can rest!

Imagine putting the woman through this cycle and the subsequent evacuations ..........

Is it worth it ?... And remember, it's from $600....... It could very easily escalate to over $2000 (depending on complications).....

True. I just found out my blood type is B rhesus D negative. I used to think I was rhesus D positive. Finding donors for my blood group is extremely hard as only 3% of the world population has a B rhesus D negative blood group. My genotype is AA though.

Wow...i haven't gotten to the rhesus factor for now but I'll definitely look into it now. Though i thought it only mattered for ladies.

This kind of advise and thinking is not for everyone.

Both of us were As. We knew. But we married anyway with the resolve to eliminate SS possibility with Medical options.

Each time she takes in we visit that sicle cell centre in Lagos near LUTH abi LASU sef... for prenatal testing. The last time we did it was between 250 and 300k. The test takes less than 30mins with minor discomfort to the woman. Usually done within the first 2-3 months.

We have 3 boys that are AA today.

None of our relatives know we are both even As or even the steps we take. We were both properly educated, weighed the options and here we are.

Bottom line both parties thinking it through and making a decision. In our case we didn't consider 300k for prenatal testing to be a major expense. Also we were also open minded about medical abortion (should it come to that), but thankfully we have not had any need for any evacuation.

Like I said, this is not for everyone. We are one in a million. I shared just in case there's that person out there that may be considering swimming against the tide and popular opinion. You are not alone. Everything is possible.

Exactly!!! Reason why I said unless they are unfortunate.

We are also educated and we knew what we were getting into from the get go, also open minded should in case a fetus turns out to be SS, our families are aware and gave their moral support, one sure thing is we can’t birth a SS baby.

I am also in the same shoes and as at last year it was already 400k but in a private hospital, I know by the time we’ll be ready for the next it will be around 500k.

Malaria fever as how? undecided

I can't remember the last time I fell sick.

Are you trying to say those with AA genotype fall sick often or what? Because I don't understand this your question.
Yes AA genotypes are prone to fall ill, especially malarial fever…. If you don’t know this yet claim to be AA , I suggest you go for a test to confirm if you’re truly AA

Oga I am not claiming to, I am AA. My siblings and I are all AA including our dad. Only our mum is AS in my family.

Like I said before I rarely fall sick, the last time I was admitted in the hospital was when I was a child.....My sickness nor dey pass slight headache when am stressed up. Only Panadol dey settle am so honestly I don't understand what you're talking about.

Is it your teacher that failed to teach you or it was you that didn't teach yourself

Have one child.. simple as abc.. do the calculations yourself as you were been taught in school during biology class.. you'll see second child produces ss child for AS parents.
I don't think you were paying attention in the biology class
if two AS marry each other the probability that the can have AA, AS, SS children is equal
it doesn't mean first born will be AA and second born will be AS or vice versa
in fact they can have 4 children and the whole 4 should be AA all through or AS or through or SS all through
it Is not fixed

Oga you’re probably not AA go n do a test
Your mum is As n dad AA n you say all their offspring is AA? That’s strange n unusual you guys better go n reconfirm your genotype status before it’s too late
Am surprised you don’t know AA are prone to malaria fever ,pls ask around or better still google it.

Do our parent know their genotype before they married?

Do all these stack illiterate out there even know what they call genotype?

Scientifically, there is 50% chances of giving birth to SS if AS and AS married. But does that come in reality considering the fact majority of Nigeria population doesn't know their genotype not even to mention people from the Northern part of the country.

I understand the implications of the genotype stuff but those questions keep coming when I hear relationship and genotype wahala.
what they refer to Abiku or whatever in Yoruba land can be easily related to this

Nope you're wrong. That only holds true for males, for a female rh-D -ve, she'd always need the Rhogem injection during pregnancy/childbirth.

About you not accepting transfusions, I'm guessing you're a JW.

That's why I said I can marry anyone. It's even better for a man to have a rh -D than for a woman.

And yes, I'm a JW... I welcome alternative methods other than Transfusion which medical professionals prefer lately.

Always believed i was AA. Babe i was dating then was AS, got sick from work stress and drinking too much monster. Had genotype test done and i was AS. Went to two other labs and was same. Babe i was dating said we should continue and not tell anyone. On my way home from lab I branched a friends house. His brother was AS and married AS against all warnings. Today he has two SS children and his life ruined . They were always going from work to hospital to house almost everyweek. Now a junkie and lost his job too from the wahala. Naso i give my self brain.

Please Nlanders, Can AC and AS give birth to SS?

Not a good idea as far as Nigeria is concerned. You can even birthed SC and SS. Run, both of you can only Relate with AA except you wanna go IVF route then Hold your Money.

I don't subtly ask.

Infact, after asking, and it looks like a relationship I may want to pursue, you'll have to go get tested at a reputable centre.
Infact, make it 3 different reputable hospitals. You can't be too careful.

Before the marriage visit go back to the 3 different reputable hospitals and add extra 3 different reputable hospitals.

Check everything checkable. SS is not a good idea. How could a child be born into Hell and Suffer all through his/her life 20years, 30years different stages of crisis only to eventually die with serious Catastrophic trauma on the Child and the Entire Family.

AC and AS can't have SS kids.

But they may have an SC kid.
what's the difference between SC and SS ?

Do SC also have crisis or pass through same Phases as SS or they differ ?

Op, I have been in this kind of scenerio twice now, though I never dated them but I really liked them. The first one happened 6 years ago, we are both not married till now. He will tell me " why are all the good girls I meet AS, and the crazy ones are AA?. AA girls have broken his heart several times.
This choice of marriage partner can be hard for some people. Those that got compatible spouses ( medical, physical, behavioral, spiritual, mental) easily don't know how lucky they are.
Imagine someone on this thread saying that he doesn't want to marry an AS, because they are all AA in his family and he wants to keep his family bloodline pure, as if AS individual chose the sickle cell genes. What a sickening mentality!

If both of you are still single, stop suffering. IVF/PGD if you have money.
