Kind of funny to read the comments on the thread

The reason why the grid is collapsing is because Nigeria as a whole does not want the power sector to operate profitably, by means of allowing the sector set its prices, so that it can become profitable to, among other things, attract investment, and grow.

The idea most of us have...no it is an idee fixee...is that government should somehow fund power with money gotten from only God knows where. The truth is, even if government sells oil at 200 dollars a barrel, we need far more than that to guarantee 24 hours a day, seven days a week power.

And the only way to do it is to allow DISCOS and GENCOS charge the kind of tarrifs they need to make a profit to pay for improvements.

But every time this is suggested, people start shouting that Nigerians are poor. Yes, we are poor. But power is something that can only be improved when you pay for it...labour, materials, operation. Plus, would you accept a cut in your salary as a businessman just because 'Nigerians are poor' ? If you were selling something, and people came and took what you were selling and refused to pay for it because Nigerians are poor, would you accept that?

Some are even calling for the British to come back. Well, the Brits left us, because as a colony we did not make them enough of a profit (it is the truth, they poured more money in than they got out of Nigeria). Plus they think the British would come and build nice things for them. Well, even if the Birtish took over our country, they would only supply areas important to their colonisation effort with electriticy, everyone else can sleep in darkness. And we would still have to pay for it...somehow. Nothing goes for free in Freetown.

Nigerians need to wake up to the fact that if they want power, they have to pay the kind of bills needed to guarantee power. There is a reason why countries like South Africa, Egypt, even Ghana have better power than we do. They pay the money needed for good power supply. We are not doing so. And even if we get Biafra tomorrow...or Islamic republic next week, the same issue remains, if power costs N100 per kwh and you insist on paying N40 per kwh because poverty, you will get N40 worth of power, not N100 worth of power.

You cannot get a ferarri at the cost of a toyota corolla.

Nigeria is a nation of professional complainers, who love nothing more than heaping abuse on whoever happens to be the current president of that nation. Check the roofs in any American neighborhood, and you will see solar panels everywhere, especially on the West Coast and in states like Arizona, Texas, Alabama, Oklahoma, and Georgia, where the sun blazes down with intensity for much of the year.

Matter of fact, American homeowners are encouraged to invest in solar power for their homes and businesses, with tax breaks offered to those who install solar power alternatives, and by allowing owners of solar-powered homes and businesses to SELL their surplus generated power back into the national grid, whereby their electricity consumption meters actually run in reverse, generating credit that is paid back in cash to solar power consumers who remain connected to the national electrical grid.

It is certain that many of the people who make a career out of heaping abuse on successive Nigerian government administrations for their failure to supply enough electrical power have invested MILLIONS of naira to buy noisy, polluting, fuel-guzzling diesel and petrol generators to power their homes and business premises. For a fraction of the money wasted on generators and fuel, those same short-sighted complainers could have purchased solar power systems that would power their homes and businesses silently, with zero pollution and zero maintenance, for years and years.

The choice is yours, pellow kwantirimans. You can continue pointing the finger of blame at the current and future governments in Nigeria, or you can awaken from your stupor and go solar. Solar panels have a lifespan of 25 years before they need replacement. The deep-cycle batteries used to store energy from those solar panels have a lifespan of 3 to 5 years before requiring replacement. Compare that cost to the litany of recurrent expenditure for repair and fuel of noisy generators, and you don't need a college degree to realize that you need to go solar NOW.

Government has paid trillions in bailout money to the power sector since 2013, keeping it afloat, because the way the pricing is set up, discos and gencos cannot charge at a profit, but at a loss, largely because we Nigerians want cheap power.

Government can help by allowing DISCOS and GENCOS to charge/set prices of power...so that they can make enough of a profit to fix things (and pay government taxes...most of them don't make enough profit to pay state and FG taxes). Nigerians too should, at least some, not all of us, stop bypassing meters, and refusing to pay for the power they use (putting the burden on those of us who do pay)

Also, transmission relies on money it is paid by DISCOS and GENCOS..who aren't earning enough money, because the law setting up privatisiaiton....well, see the paragraph before this.

When govt pays a certain amount, just know that 20% or less of that money is what got to d receiver, d money OBJ spent on NEPA alone was less than wat China used to build the largest generating plant in the world back then. Govt throwing money recklessly doesn't mean they are actually fixing the problem

1)solar is capital intensive
2)batteries in Nigeria are a racket where substandard batteries are sold at premium and give out in 9 months
3)equipment is another racket where low grade Chinese equipment is also sold at premium.

It is not in black and white.

Exactly, which is why government has to allow the power sector run like the commercial entity it is supposed to be, and it starts by letting them charge the tarrifs they need to charge to run profitably, and everyone has to pay for the power they use.

Wow. Never heard of deep cycle batteries giving out after such a short time as 9 months. That is a truly abysmal lifespan for sure. Fear of Chinese equipment is indeed the beginning of wisdom, and yet, pretty much anything electronic these days is either Chinese-made or contains an abundance of Chinese parts.

There is nothing wrong with Chinese parts, after all, they make Iphones.

However between Nigerian greed, lack of regulation and connivance, we get all sorts of under spec, dangerous rubbish brought into nigeria by importers.

Sometimes it is deliberately thought out. Low quality materials designed to fail are a constant revenue stream. Though you also have to add Nigerians who will argue that no name Chinese android phones are on par with Iphones.

And to the think that the Federal government have absolutely no response or solution to these problems after eight years. But they can campaign for 2023 Abi. What they did not achieve in 8 years is what they now want to achieve in 2023 abi. Unless they sanction these owners of these power stations, these nonsense will continue.

The only thing Buhari can do to fix power is by allowing DISCOS to set the price of power, and not the government

Also, those who are not paying for power should be made to pay.

That is all they can do.

P.S : I always took that 'plan to increase power' with a pinch of salt. Especially with the liquidity issues in the country. Besides, it was a long term project...to be finished in 2025. And we need far more than 25000...more like 50000.

PS2. I don't support Buhari, APC or PDP.
