I have been on/off from my work(shop) for 2weeks now, I have this new worker who is a Muslim and I am a Christian, of course, I am not against her religion or anything, I still grant her the permission to attend mosque every Friday afternoon and I always try to be at shop by 2pm, or get someone to replace her..

Today I came to shop and the first thing I noticed was that she allowed one Alfa that I know very well, into the shop(she knows it is not allowed), my mind told me they were both reciting the Quran before I came in.

Secondly, she told me that she needs to pray (in the shop) that I should excuse her while I had to leave there and go outside..This has never been happening for 3 months she's been here..

Even myself being a Christian, I pray before coming to shop/work.

I wanted to tell her to stop praying in the shop because it is not a praying ground or mosque, should I go ahead?

I am not against her religion whatsoever, even she reads the Quran quietly in the shop and there's no issue about that.

Hmmmmmmm.
Your employee asked you to leave your shop for her so that she can pray?

What are you not telling us exactly?

make rules from the get go that, as much as she can do what she pleases in her own free time, during work she must WORK.
furthermore, as much as praying is allowed, it certainly shouldnt be done on work premises.

do you actually think that muslim bus drivers and/or muslim bank employees ask people to leave the bus/bank while they can pray OR pray at anytime they desire?!

It's like your shop is gradually looking like moshalishi to her?
Let's assume she works in some multinational companies, will she have the temerity to "pray" let alone telling her boss to excuse her to pray?
Oga..... better man up and set the standard you want for your business.

You need to call her to sit and have a private talk with her. She is taking too far the freedom to practise her religious duties. She should have a set time for her prayers and any other time aside from the one you and her have agreed upon will not be acceptable.

This is not acceptable!

You need to set ground rules and number 1 on the list should be - No religious activity in the shop/office!

It seems you didn't lay out rules to your employee or she saw you were too soft and she now feels she can do anyhow as she likes. You need to put your foot down and tell her not to mix her job with religion. I've seen Muslim bosses who wouldn't let their employees pray unless they're on break and they're noy to pray at the job o, they go to praying grounds or mosques to do that. If your employee can not balance her career with her religious life, then you have no choice but to let her go.

No need to hurriedly sack her.

Have a crucial conversation with her...reach a new agreement and understanding.

1. She can't be having prayers that involves reciting anything in the shop, especially with one or more people in the shop.

2. Time of leaving work and returning have to be clearly determined.

3. Contravening any of your agreed code of conduct should also have corresponding penalties and consequences.

By all means follow your gut feeling. Let that same girl travel out of Naija to a Western culture and see how less religious she'll become. Hypocrites!

The 1st year I arrived Yankee, I worked at a restaurant, as a dishwasher, along with this other muslim guy from Ivory Coast. At the end of the year, we were given bonuses including a bottle of white wine each. Ivorian dude said he didn't want the wine cos he's a muslim. Ok then, pls Umar, kindly take it from the manager and gimme the wine, he said he couldn't touch it... Wine in a bottle!

I was so livid. Then, I reminded him how he washes the pots used in cooking pork religiously. How he also washes glasses customers drink their liquor in. I told him; "Dude, you're a damn hypocrite, because by the standard you claim to uphold, you shouldn't work here."

Long story short, I had long forgotten about the bottle of wine when I felt Umar tap me from behind. "Here's the wine", he said. Really? He had thought deep and hard about how bigotry is plain folly.

Yes, tell her to do her prayer with the Alfa before or after work hours.

Give people a finger and they'll try to take the entire arm. Haba!

If you let this one go, tomorrow it'll be another thing. How can you leave your own shop for her to pray? Put a stop to it now.

Christian or Muslim...You don't bring that stuff into business.
I think there is a problem when your employee excuses you from your own shop.
