Some people do it as a libation to ancestors or deities to whom they owe allegiance. Others do it as a quick test to determine if the particular product is fake especially in the case of beer or other carbonated beverages. The idea is that if it froths upon touching the ground, it is an original product..

It's an ancient practice because we are the biblical Hebrews, the people of the book. It is in reverence to the ancestors and the Creator.

It's our Culture.

Sometimes I pour it on the ground during public gatherings if I suspect poison, so I do it so that my Gods/Forefathers would protect me.

Other times when I am alone, I do it to show respect to my forefathers and thank them for the opportunity of life, I greet them for my blessings so far and availability of drink to taste.

I am an Igbo man and I don't believe the white man's Culture, I only believe in God which my forefathers believe in.

A good sealed beer foams very well when you pour it on the ground. If it's expired, or has been tampared with and air gets into it, it wont foam well when you pour it on the ground
