No matter ur class of degree, course studied or even country u schooled, nothing is guaranteed after you graduate. I never knew the strong importance of having a skill myself till I graduated and finished NYSC. Luckily I had a plan and somehow sticked to it and mastered my skill in web development and am doing just fine. Many are still lost till today even 5 years after graduating please all undergraduates any free time u have , summer holidays , even when ASU strikes just use that period and master ur skill or get one before graduating u will be greatful u did. The Nigerian job market is highly saturated and there are thing that are outside of ur control. You can still get a good job few months or days or years after NYSC but trust me u will never want to experience how it is to be unemployed.

I train people on web development (front and bankend), Digital marketing, affiliate marketing at affordable prices or even free from time to time u can DM me.

If you graduate with a 2.1 and above, and you are naturally good then you have a chance.

I have been an example in that aspect.

This is what some don't understand.. like I for instance,I would have love to learn some digital skills to aid my teaching profession after graduation as an Education student, but I don't have the resources to get a laptop or pay for some certifications. Most of my monthly allowance is spent on food due to the high prices on food. I can't even save cry cry cry

Why is everybody talking about skills. Is it free to learn skills?

Is like joining bandits will be the next lucrative business for Nigeria if the failed govt isn't doing anything?

Ironically, some will be requesting hundreds of thousands from a poor graduates to acquire those skill.

I think learning handwork or focusing on business is ok.

A sane country always take her youth seriously bcoz they're the future, a bank of limitless new creative ideas, innovation, freshness, hope, light, energy.

But this unfortunate country feels the Nigerian female youth is only good enuf for banging (Olosho) while youthful male compatriots are only good enuf for thuggery and political violence.

Bro start with what you have, when I started graphics design and blogging in 2015 (200 Level), I don't have a laptop or a good phone, imagine taking pen and book to a graphics design class. Also, where I schooled, there is no light off campus at all (the community I schooled was cut off the national grid), so there is no even hope of light unless when you are inside the campus for lectures but I still continued learning and developing my skills.

Fast forward to now, everything now makes sense, all my sacrifices then are now bringing up big fruits.

So my bro, start from where you are, I will never believe or join the people that says there is no job in Nigeria, that's a flat lie, do you know what? If a person want to have two jobs in this present Nigeria it's very possible but unfortunately we have set of lazy, undertimed and unskilled youths who doesn't have the requisite skill and conditions to get a job.

What is special about being a graduate? Does being a graduate make you different from the average human hustling to make ends meet?

Nigerian graduates need to drop this useless entitlement mentality. You're not different from the plumber, barber, construction worker, shoemaker, market woman, fashion designers, etc.

Go and fûcking hustle. You're not entitled to nothing you didn't hustle for.
This is very true. I realized it after my NYSC. Nigerian leaders have turned both the literates and illiterates to be the same. If you don't hustle, the so called plumber will do greater things in life than you as a graduate

U will be shocked what u can learn for free today, almost everything with even free certifications I have never spent a dime learning anything since I went into web development. I regretted all the times I used to waste my data on Facebook and YouTube watching things that didn't add value to my live. I have over 700 videos tutorials on web development and digital marketing on my laptop. yes the offline skills cost money but u can learn almost everything for free online. Trust me do ur research I have over 6 certifications from Google and over 20 from different other reputable learning platforms all for free, which is useful today if I wish to further my education, as I initially did accounting and finance in my first degree. I dnt regret being born in the 21st century take advantage of the internet today.

To all the undergraduate and those serving the country right now, you need to do the following if you really want to make it in this country. I wish someone has told about it before I was still an undergraduate.

1. Graduating with first class does not guarantee you success. However, you need good grade to secure a high paying job.

2. Start planning for your future right now. Whatever business you wish to venture, start learning about it from someone that has succeeded in the business line.

3. Passion that does not guarantee a high income is a capital NO. You might not understand this right now until you marry and start having kids. Everything will become clearer to you.

4. Having a single source of income is very bad. Just imagine, what will happen if you loose your job?

5. It is easier to save money for your project when you are still under your parents' roof. My dear friend, don't get carried away by worldly things. When you make it, you will enjoy everything about life as you grow older.

6. There is no shame in learning from an artisan that is not as educated as you. Your primary aim is to learn and use your head as an educated fellow to brand yourself.

7. Keep the advice and meditate over it.

I wish you success in your endeavours.
Cheers to a bright future

Some skills are actually free. You get on youtube to watch movies most times with your data, but you can learn and understand almost everything about coding on youtube.

Re: Ask Graduates On Nairaland by Mavor: 3:28pm On May 01, 2022
In this bad Nigerian economy and COVID-19 era, coupled with technological advancements in cloud tech, telecom (5G), internet (Web 3.0), it is possible to be earning at least USD $2000 from your house (remote work) in Nigeria here for organizations not domiciled in Nigeria. Acquiring the following skillset is a plus - software programming, cloud management on AWS, tech sales skills, business analyst, etc. Forget white collar jobs, bank jobs, government jobs, real estate jobs, insurance jobs, etc. Those ones can only barely sustain you month on month.

My advice to any sensible graduate with a 2.1 or first class degree is to enlope from the ZOO before it becomes too late.

Forget that thing guy. I got a 3rd class and I am earning in USD, almost 3m monthly for 9ja here. Shine your eyes and understand global tech trends and acquire the relevant hot cake skillsets. Even the oyibo man who invented GPA do not really care about all these 2.1, 2.2, etc. It's about your skillsets.

However, I always wish I had learnt soft skills while in school, and started hustling then.

No regrets Sha... Still, I will counsel every undergraduate not to waste his youth trying solely to get a degree or degrees! The jobs are quite few and seriously in competition!

Thank God for the internet, you can start off your career online!

This 2022, going to get 4 years degree without your own source of income or without having solid background is not advisable.

To pay school is not even the problem , but to survive for 4 years no Dey easy ..

Now imagine say you husle and finish , u kon go start afresh learning skills ??

It’s not as easy as y’all make it seems.

House rent don high .

Now to skills , u no go chop for period of 3 years wey u one take learn and remember, no be every one fit learn digital skills . Yes, and it doesn’t make dem less of a human . We have different brain ..

I no there’s no excuse for failure, but you have to understand that person wey go school for 4 years without skills don try. E no easy.
The blame is on the country not graduates.

Im among the few lucky chaps even though I hustle so hard for it, I’ll still say I’m lucky , some people husle like mad shishi dem no get . And no be say I get money self, but I sha Dey eat 3square meals .

Now imagine say you manage make am small, you will be faced with another problem , - insecurity ..
Even if you japa, shey u no go come back ?

Abi na everyone go get opportunity to japa ??

Nigeria graduates I hail thee. Una Dey try
E no easy .,

Nigeria is messed up, work on yourself, acquire new skills and don't focus too much on white collar jobs

Exactly.....

The main emphasis for youths now is self development / self employment.

Besides, job employment doesn't guarantee financial freedom.

Lets ask graduates on Nairaland. Why? Because they are the true eyes of the Nigerian reality when it comes to employment.
The aim of this thread is to vent or explain what you are currently facing as a Nigerian graduate.

Also the purpose of this thread is to let those who are currently undergraduates or serving under NYSC to understand the absolute reality in the Labor market and how challenging survival is. Good point. My advice, grab your pvc and chase these menace out of politics next year...as in, retire them permanently. They're your wiest enemies you need to deal with. Shine your eyes and vote wisely.

My advice to Nigerian graduates is to learn a skill, and with time, leave the country for those that spoiled it if you can.

Ibadan jobs will only pay less than 50k
There aren't opportunities here!

Acquire a digital skill and if you are very good at writing; try freelancing via Upwork, Via or other remote (Not Nigerian).

Note you have to be very good

Why not look for a factory job or labour job close to you. If you're disciplined, within 1 year you can raise the capital you need. Don't wait for a good Samaritan to dash you money. You can equally go back to school and do a highly paying course.
