Damn...you scared the shiit outta me with this. I had to rush to the toilet to recover.

But in my opinion, at least, I should achieve those basics before I die suffering in Nigeria na. Even though I understand your point of view from experience.... Shiit is real tough down here bro

I understand that which is why I said that while I won’t discourage anyone, I won’t also actively encourage anyone. I am just telling people as it is. For some people going abroad may seem or be their only option, I am only saying once many overcome these primordial necessities of food shelter etc abroad, the intangibles will then set in and it will never go away! The point is it is not a bed of roses and be prepared for what lies ahead. I understand that for many it is a question of which is the lesser of 2 evils. The point is neither is rosy, staying in Nigeria or going abroad, it’s just a different set of challenges!!!

These past weeks, I've been reaching out to my friends who are abroad to help me with links or advices to move abroad too. But I discovered that none of them decided to help, instead they discouraged me either by saying, "it's difficult to move now or the country isn't issuing visa now".

One of my guy in CANADA defiantly ignored my text when I asked him for links or the route he used to move, the other in Korea said the country isn't issuing visa now but he recently moved back and another directly said that it's very hard to get visas now to travel. But one Asian American in the States gave me lots of links to move to the State and even encouraged me to move.

But then I don't understand why our African brothers over there will never encourage or advice someone willing to move. Is it envy or greediness or what? I've never had any of my guy abroad encourage me to move when I asked for advice. If things are difficult over there, why not come home?

NB: I never asked them for fund cos the money is available.
Cuz Brother, it is not rosy out there. If you are doing fine economically here please don't trouble yourself going anywhere. All that glitters is not gold.
The problem Nigeria has is leadership otherwise it would have been one of the best places in the world

You are wrong with your narrative. Read what that person you quoted (@casualobserver) wrote. That was the pure truth. I'm sorry, I suspect you haven't lived in any country apart from Nigeria; please do not consider that as derogatory remark. The person you quoted has seen it all, and I can relate to what he's saying.

I will ignore your comment on my country of residence. But lots of Nigerians who relocated back home from abroad without a strong footing or conenction all ran back after few months and pound/dollar don finish. Only those who stay back are the well connected or those who came home to retire.
In the uk, the narrative for naija immigrants is changing. There's a strong middle class community with lots of healthcare professionals, IT guys, lecturers, professionals who work in logistics and financial companies. These are the group we talking about.
I was in Turkey 2 month ago, there were sizeable Nigerian tourists from western countries with their families in the 5 star hotel I resided. I was impressed. Young families at that.
I dont know where he got majority of Nigerians are suffering from. Travel to USA and see what nigerians are doing. 100k per yr is no big deal among Nigerian professionals in the usa. Its early days for nigerians in canada, but I'm sure in 5 yrs time, they will begin to advance in their respective careers.
It's not a must u fulfil your dream in Nigeria. allow those who wants to relocate albeit legally do so. personally, its worth the effort.

What exactly do you mean by encourage? Let me explain it to you as someone who has a British passport has live abroad for many years but returned home.

The truth is life over there is a sort of bondage for someone with a Nigerian mindset. You are constantly working to pay bills , no matter how much you earn your expenses rise such that you are a slave to your job, the system entraps you in ways I can’t describe here for sake of brevity, unless you are amongst the few who can establish a means of income in the multiples of hundreds of thousands be it dollars be it pounds. Otherwise yes you will eat well and enjoy certain basics that may not be available in Nigeria for most Nigerians but there are many negative intangibles especially for someone raised in Nigeria.

Unless you are a high paying job, $100-200k + life is not a bed of roses. Even at that level you are struggling but can afford things to mitigate the struggles like holidays back home or other destinations. In theory you will be better off than in Nigeria initially but life is such that once you overcome the basic sufferings back in Nigeria, the intangible negatives start to matter. I am back in Nigeria and I wouldn’t go back. I am lucky I can travel out when I am tired of Nigeria but I will never again live abroad….unless I am forced to. With all the problems of Nigeria, there is no place like home. There is a sense of freedom and self worth in Nigeria you have that you lose when you go abroad, that’s one of the intangibles I talk about. No matter what you will always be a nobody abroad….that’s another!!!

Would I encourage anyone to move abroad. It’s a hard question because you will pay a huge psychological price for moving abroad, one you will not understand until you get there and one I can never explain to you until you have experienced it. What I would say is, if you want to go abroad, have a mission and come back with if 5 years!!! I won’t encourage or discourage anyone!!! I wouldn’t actively encourage anyone because I don’t want to be the one responsible for selling you a dream that will not match your reality!!!!

Very well said.

I find it strange how people who haven't been oversea feel strongly about their experiences, which are mainly gathered via Hollywood movies. Just as it is in Nigeria, there are different levels abroad. While some take their girlfriends to a 2000 naira dingy hotel, some dudes are spending 500k naira per night on a hotel in naija. To everyone, his own.

Lot of people are slaving their lives away over there, and some are regretting why they chose to come in the first place. There's nothing as frustrating as stagnation. Leather suits that lot of people show off on Instagram won't cover for inner sadness and regrets.

A lizard in Nigeria won't turn crocodile abroad. Consider your case carefully before you take a step. Most people are lying about their situations abroad, Get the visa and tell them you are coming to stay with them, they won't argue with you but abandon you at the airport.

This is a very good post pls.

I have always heard the same from them too.

The last man would tell u this our current mess called economy is better tha that of the US.

Saying u can have a very good meal here with #500.

But he forgot that the very good meal here is a trash in quality compared to the very good meal there which like 2 dollars can afford.

Imagine earning #2million a week there but telling me here is better.

They fear burden of residence and scare from arrest in case of any illegality related to who concerns them.

They also fear the cost of helping us to secure accommodation for the mean time.

It's well sha. All up to who thinks he has made heaven. But no matter how high the hill a bird flies to, it is still on this earth.

If they come back, they know they will be asked unwanted and uncomfortable questions. I know of a bank manager who sold her properties to travel overseas. When she got there, the only job she was offered was to sweep the roads. She couldn't come back because of the amount of ridicule she would face here

It's not easy. As blacks we don't like to help each other grow.
If they help you move who will welcome them when they are back home. Such is our mentality here in country.
We like to enslave each other.
Many years ago a friend told me there is nothing in Brazil. He will be back next month ,keep telling me next month
I made my way therei didn't Inform him.
We met in a mall where I work as a security guard. The guy nearly run mad seeing me.

I thank God

I have been to Brazil a few times - there is nothing there and you know it

Help comes in so many ways my brother. If nah to show you the way to enter and establish yourself, why not. I follow in the footsteps of those who helped me settle down by helping others too in my own little ways. I prayed that God use me for people too, and He did recently with the people that migrated from Ukraine. I am not where I want to be, but I believe I am on the right track and I bless God for that.

So it depends on how you want me to help you, if it is something within my power, why not. If nah, Information, I fit share the one I get, and source for more, and if nah to help you settle down, God go do am. I have a lot of job connections, but housing is a very big problem here sha. grin I don accommodate two people for my bunk already, but we fit still arrange. But again, you still won't really have accommodation issue if you enter say through a student visa sha

Ticket to from lagos to london is 500k, that's what u want to use to start business in Nigeria? I laff in buhari's style.
From your comment, I absolutely agree with you that u are very privileged. U dont know anything about street life in Naija. You probably came back to a nice apartment in ikoyi, have the right contact and connection to get you the a cool effortless job. everything is at your beck and call.
sorry, we are not talking about people like u. Someone like u shouldnt have left naija in the 1st place. upper class dont relocate anywhere in the world. relocation is mainly a middle class affair- be it africa, china or india. These are the people who needs extra space to see road clearly- something western countries offer.

First of all moving abroad is not just about your ticket, you have passport fees, visa fees, agents fees if you are using one of these so called immigration agents, you will also have some money on hand to survive for the initial period. I would say you will spend at least 1-2 million before you get on a plane if not more.

Let’s say 1m, If you have 1m and cannot find something you can buy for 1m this month and sell for 1.1m in a month, and take that 1.1m and turn it into 1.2m next month such that after 12 months you now have 3m and are making 300k a months, then with due respect, your problem is not Nigeria, your problem is you and with due respect your mindset will not take toi above mediocrity abroad!!!! The people who have legitimate challenges in Nigeria are those who cannot get a job and cannot raise capital to do business!!! Even maiguards augment their income by selling provisions.

Most ppl abroad will return back if Nigeria was in a good shape and they have crossed a point of no return.

Thanks for this...
I remember I use to listen to people saying ghana is better than Nigeria or benin republic or other african country...
I decided to first go to ghana left my job to start a life there since it's better only for me to meet reality... I came down to benin republic no jobs nothing even people there are looking at me as a big man there whereas I am suppose to look up to them for jobs and other things... They were even asking me if they can follow me to Nigeria to start a life... I was shocked...
I left and went to cameroon and same thing... Later I can back to nigeria with almost nothing...
I started over again and haven gotten my foot like before I left...
I faced hell in other countries...
Eversince then I don't listen to people saying I want to travel out or nigeria Is worse than other country...
When I came back finally I had to lie that I went outside Nigeria to work and I was scammed.
I learned my lesson...
So same happens to people all over the country... Many will regret few will be lucky to make it and few means very few...
Since then if anyone is talking about travelling out to make it...
All I tell them is go and see for yourself cos people don't like truth... It will only take you grace and huge luck to make it except you are into dirty business...
Let the man be and have a taste of it who knows he might be among the few and there is higher possiblity that he will lament...
People outside the country lies about the flamboyant lifestyle and movies is all bull sh*t... Most things are lies and most stories about Nigerians saying they make billions after travelling out are either into dirty business or just lying cos or disgrace they might face...
I learned my lessons and let him learn too
lol.. those people screaming japa , Japa .. anywhere is better than Nigeria,
Are just undergraduate student

Never for once have I experienced power failure, shey na better health care we wan mention, or as I walk freely anytime of the day without fear (leave home for work 3am fearlessly), no police harassment, no banditry or armed robbery. Although you can't rule out pockets of these crimes, but it has never happened to me. So in all ramifications, living abroad (better countries o) outweighs living in naija right now. But sha, there is no place like home, nah naija you fit truly flex your wealth wey you gather abroad.

Whenever you move, just make sure it is done legitimately. Bro, you don't want to end up as an illegal immigrant (i.e, over staying). I would suggest you move to whatever country you want to move to as a student; that's the easiest way to migrate these days, others are tedious and expensive. Except of course you are in the medical line. Just be sure to have some sellable skills, preferably IT related, or basic skills like manicure and pedicure, barbing and hair dressing (just that all my female friends dey rock low cut now grin). Don't travel empty without a skill. And pray for divine favour too.

Now, those who are discouraging you have their different reasons for doing so. For example, on the streets of Berlin for example, I daily run into some of our African people on different stages of madness. While some are making it, some aren't so fortunate, and when one succumbs to the frustration, insanity sets in.

Whichever country you enter, make sure you are legit, pray that God directs your path to meet people that would direct your path (show you the way), don't get carried away, hustle when you still have strength in your bones, find time to blow off steam at interval, and with God on your side, it will be all smiles down the road.

I was fortunate to land in the hands of kind people, who despite what they went through before settling down, welcomed me with both arms and showed me the way. Without them, it would have been hell. And I also met people who didn't want to help, one even said he went through hell, as such, we too should follow the same process, imagine! undecided

I wish you the very best in your quest to relocate abroad. Don't be discouraged. smiley
