In medicine, psychiatry particularly, suicide attempts where the individual makes a suicide note is actually considered a very serious threat.

Many have said what you wrote up there only to realize that the person was actually serious; but, of course, too late.

Every threat of suicide should be taken seriously and consultations with a professional should be considered.
