A video of Limpopo province's health MEC (minister) Dr Phophi Ramathuba lashing out at a Zimbabwean patient at a government hospital has sparked an outcry in South Africa.

The MEC is heard telling the patient that migrants are to blame for her department's stretched budget.

Dr Angelique Coetzee, a Solidarity Doctors Network board member, said the MEC was out of line.

“This patient is a victim of the drama between the two countries. Even if they cross the border illegally to get health services, it’s not their fault. She [the MEC] wasn’t supposed to embarrass her like that in front of people.

“It was unethical, unprofessional and out of line. She should have addressed that at a different level,” Coetzee said.

She added that the constitution makes it compulsory for anyone to receive emergency medical attention.

Dr Mike Ramothwala, from the Limpopo department of health, endorsed the MEC's statements, saying: “The last statistics showed that 80% of women giving birth at Musina hospital are illegal Zimbabweans and SA women sometimes didn’t find beds to give birth on. We are trying to fix our healthcare system but we can never do it unless what our MEC is saying is addressed.”

I think the difference is that politicians pay handsomely to be in SA hospitals. Illegal immigrants don't.

If the so called CityBoil that owns a private amenity ward in a public teaching hospital in Lagos is patronizing what he claims to develop, and that slowpoke in Aso Rock did same with Aso Villa Hospital, many politicians would have been convinced to use HOME!

I don’t blame her, she is looking out for her people. If our own government were looking out for us, we won’t have Nigerians in SA.

She is right, but she could have addressed it professionally and with other government stakeholders.

Every sector and facilities in South Africa has been stretched by foreigners, mostly Zimbabweans.

How can you be a citizen of a country and cannot even enjoy anything because someone feels entitled to it.

South Africa is beautiful, fun and developed to a great extent. However, illegal immigrants are making life harder for the citizens.

Immigrants should all go back to their respective countries and demand good governance from their politicians.

If your country is fixed, you won't have any reason to go to other people's country. Those people fought to fix their country. Go back to your own country and get it fixed

This is how this government here should start reasoning, not prioritising building a rail from Nigeria to Niger republic and buying SUVs for their officials.

But why is SA these bitter in everything now its no longer foreigners taking their women and their jobs but now their hospital?
