A video of Limpopo province's health MEC (minister) Dr Phophi Ramathuba lashing out at a Zimbabwean patient at a government hospital has sparked an outcry in South Africa.

The MEC is heard telling the patient that migrants are to blame for her department's stretched budget.

Dr Angelique Coetzee, a Solidarity Doctors Network board member, said the MEC was out of line.

“This patient is a victim of the drama between the two countries. Even if they cross the border illegally to get health services, it’s not their fault. She [the MEC] wasn’t supposed to embarrass her like that in front of people.

“It was unethical, unprofessional and out of line. She should have addressed that at a different level,” Coetzee said.

She added that the constitution makes it compulsory for anyone to receive emergency medical attention.

Dr Mike Ramothwala, from the Limpopo department of health, endorsed the MEC's statements, saying: “The last statistics showed that 80% of women giving birth at Musina hospital are illegal Zimbabweans and SA women sometimes didn’t find beds to give birth on. We are trying to fix our healthcare system but we can never do it unless what our MEC is saying is addressed.”

It is not complex. Many countries around the world adhere to this same stance of equal access to health care which is considered a human right however many of them have figured out how to charge the uninsured or track them to make sure there is not an abuse of the system.

Some have figured out how to fund these circumstances by devising ways to tax illegals or immigrants to supplement the costs of health care.

Your government is just clueless and have a lot of semi illiterates running ministries and so they pander to the public so they look as if they know what they are doing.

Well your government refuses to call out the Zim government so what do you expect. Every unstable country that exists around you will have its citizens bleed into the economy of the neighbouring country especially if that economy is doing better i.e. White monopoly controlled capitalist state. Well, my comment brached off of medial tourism. This is the reason why I targeted the real problem.

It's a huge income vessel but it has spills all over the place. When the situation got intense, all had to ban flights from Russia, didn't they?

Who considered medical tourism or investment after the Russian attack? Moscow used to be a hot-spot for clients.
