In saner climes, fines are placed on impounded cars and not just straight auctions. The report didn't state anything like a fine and it was even reported that the driver(owner) was jailed because of the crime. He had no hearing whatsoever before the double tragedy befell him. This doesn't in any way make the society better. You don't pauperize a citizen for such a minor crime. It is disheartening.
If he was taken to whatever court in charge of traffic crimes, he would have been heard and the judge would have hit him with a fine which is reasonable enough to caution him and still keep his hope alive.
There's a reason why Prison Services have been renamed Correctional Services. If you use a disproportionate heavy hand on a man struggling to survive, he may resort to something more dastard which will be costlier for all in the long run.
Driving against traffic and endangering the lives of other road users a minor crime? That is a felony.

Is it lawful to embezzle public? Why will our leaders steal our common wealth and go Scott free?

I disagree With you I’ve someone in the system . If you don’t want to pay it’s optional . These people pay because they break rules whenever they feel like . Those money they’re paying is for them not to be charged to Court whenever they’re caught in the act .
The money they pay is more like friendship establishments.

Hotel, bars and Clubs too settle Government agencies to establish friendship incase something unpleasant happens in the future the case will be treated with kid gloves.

When a driver obeys traffic laws 100 percent nobody will arrest you . Instead on paying 50k to Court they prefer to pay 5k to government Agencies it’s cheaper . Nigerians can’t do without breaking laws we’re used to it . That’s why government Agencies takes advantage of us .
Who told you that Agbero money is optional?

There is a fundamental problem with the Lagos State traffic control that has to be addressed. It is seemingly directed towards revenue generation than traffic safety. There are a lot of one ways without obvious sign posts.

I almost fell victim in Unilag axis. Now I simply leave my car at home if I'm going to areas I'm not well familiar with cos Lasma officers would rather push you into a trap than to save you from entering one.

So if you drive against traffic in London, they impound your vehicle and sell it at auction?

Agreed, he committed a crime and must pay, but the punishment must fit the crime in a free and just society.

This is Lagos State Government using the color of the law and crime to oppress her own people, enriching the already wealthy at the expense of the poor, because I can tell you that the vehicles of the rich and well connected who committed the same crime were either not similarly impounded or has since been released.

Honestly, I don't understand why we think the seizure and auctioning of of the vehicles of one-way traffic offenders! People are demanding for leniency for them.

But wait a minute, the people that one-way traffic offenders have killed or wounded didn't have the chance to plead for leniency for their lives.
My post was never about the auctioning of vehicles. Those vehicles are supposed to be impounded. I was talking about the 3 years imprisonment if that was true.

You get?

We're too linient with traffic rules in this country. If u see wetin Canada do my person early dis year for traffic offence you go cry. After collecting her driver's licence, they took her car to their office and parked it there for 1month. When she went there after the 1month to claim the car, they told her she's going to pay 50 dollars per day for parking space within their premises. By the time they added money for the main offence she had to pay close to 3k dollars. She wept like a baby. Kikikikikikiki........she was late for work and went to drive on the wrong lane to beat time. This things are taken seriously over there because it can lead to the death of another person. More than half of her salary that month was gone. Lol.......
I wish this comment was on the front page for people to learn to behave appropriately.

This piece of information is a misinformation!

You bought a vehicle 2021(last year) you committed an offence by driving against the traffic( which can led to loss of life and properties) 3months after purchasing the car and you were put into jail for 3years which you recently completed?

But working with the information we have , there is an established rule which you have broken. There is an outlined punishment for this offence. So what exactly are you pleading for?
Is he begging for money to get his car or bringing the auction down to 50k.

If we want to progress as a country we should try and separate reality from emotions. Let every offender face full course of the law irrespective of your position.

The abroad we all talk about, no one will dare try such a thing, your plate number is connected to the cameras and your biodata, no police will run after you and there is no one to beg. You will get your fine(through post) and depending on the gravity of the offence committed you may go to jail or even lose your driving licence and be banned forever from driving.
Let all try to be law abiding citizens and make our country great once again.!

This is draconian and cruel. How about fines, suspended prison sentences and suspended licenses? Sad thing is law applies to the ordinary Nigerian.

When will Nigeria start confiscating the assets of the looters in government?

No, we reward them and name national assets and road after them.
Can we even first start from somewhere?

I bet you wont say the law is draconian if you suffer a personal loss due to one way driving.

The point of the auction is to shock and spread the news, but you know Nigerians, people will still drive one way.

In advanced countries, your vehicles will be completely forfeited, you will never drive again and then you will still go to prison.

All thanks to Tinubu, a very big thanks to him.

This is a man some føolish idiotic nonentities believed and think that Nigerians will vote for so that he can continue with his oppressive rule. Funny enough, the law makers and enforcers are the ones breaking the laws more in Lagos. Till they obey the law they make themselves, will I take them serious.

Atleast there should have been a warning given to defaulters by paying a little amount of money , but no, it's total seizing of their cars and auctioning it at ridiculous amount, so that poor people will Continue to suffer endlessly.

Agbadorian can only be president of Iragbiji not Nigeria, Incase he needs my vote to be life president of Iragbiji community, I am ready to vote him.

Their staff at alausa secretariat are the worst offenders. They pass one way, drive on BRT lane, lastma would see them but only look the other way. Let anyone else try it. They'd rush the person like when chicken rush at corn scattered on the ground. God knows hot He deals with them shaa

Agbero work for NURT which is controlled by local government. I’ve seen it in different states in Nigeria they sell tickets.
You give commission for picking passengers in some bustops you pick and carry passenger it’s only in Lagos you refer to them as Agbero.

That Aside we’re taking about drivers and police arrest . Which is said it’s optional police can’t arrest you for not committing any offense .

I know how dangerous these one way drivers can be. They even claim right of way. But this is way over the top. Unless perhaps the person caused an accident already. However I think hefty fines would have sufficed.

Please tell me which of the advanced countries. I want to check something

A draconian and inhuman law.
Meant to keep the poor perpetually impoverished.
A traffic offender does 3 whole years of jail time and still gets vehicle impounded and auctioned.
It definitely applies only to the poor masses

do you know the reasons developed nations are cordinated? Their are consequences for every law you break. I want to believe they could be worse than Nigerians without consequences. But we need to start from somewhere. You will see that people that drives one-way and potential hit and run scenerios will drastically reduce.

Agreed. Even in Abuja these one way drivers are everywhere. They even claim right of way. Agreed we need laws to deter this lawlessness, it would be great to see stringent laws apply to all though. But then this is Nigeria and I'm naive thinking it can happen
