kabe1: Are you in time of war? Then why did you call it a big fat target What LHD offers every Navy in the world is it's ability to carry larg number of personals and some numbers of helicopters which makes it serves as a command post at sea 3 Likes |

MAN1960: When buying a military equipment, you take into account all possible scenarios. In what way is an LHD beneficial to Nigeria, and what tactical advantage would such a ship provide that our LST don't fulfill? 1 Like |

Fynline: So you are tell me that the US has more than 10 LHD because they are planning on invading another nation? There is what we call multi-purpose equipments and the LHD is among the classes of such weapons, it allows navies to spend more time at sea ( months ). It's can be use as a command and control post at sea. Any nation that takes its security and the territory integrity of it's EEZ seriously must have such weapons. |

kabe1:it can serve as a command centre at sea Moves more aerial assets than the LST The LHD could do what the LST does and more |

MAN1960: I find it bemusing how we jump straight to US as an example when discussing defence acquisitions. Spend more time at sea? When we have cheaper and more effective platforms that can already do that? We have bigger and more pressing needs that will better serve our purpose than an LHD @Toju moving more assets to where? 5 Likes |

Toju200: No it cannot do what the LST does in a Nigerian security environment. The LST does all you have mentioned and is significantly cheaper to operate and deploy. There's nothing an LHD will do for Nigeria. |

MAN1960: This is ridiculous, the United States is a global superpower with bases all across the world, hence the requirement for super carriers and LHDs. The US also spends over 800 billion USD on defence, that's nearly 2 times of Nigeria's entire GDP. A Nation that it's security seriously spends in areas that are most needed, not in LHDs. |

davefurn:The situation in Haiti should serve as a wake up call for African (especially west African) countries that are following Haiti's footsteps into socio economic destruction. The number of people kidnapped this year is running in the thousands currently. A country of just 11 million people. Their entire government cabinet are basically begging the UN for foreign intervention. US and Mexico sent a petition to the UNSC to approve an intervention in Haiti to flush out gangs. It will likely push through because UNSC voted unanimously to sanction the gangs. US, Canada and Mexico will support the operation logistically but will not send any troops to Haiti for obvious reasons. They're shopping for a suitable country to do help do the job in Haiti. 1 Like |

Maybe not LHDs but the Nigerian Navy needs more than just LSTs. It needs to level up from depending on frigates as it's flagship. Maybe the "Low cost type 31 amphibious assault ship" will do or better still the "Tarlac amphibious assault ship" of the Philippine Navy

davefurn:Yes. However this does not mean Israel doesn't have more than capable systems of meeting Iran's present and future threats. There is David's sling and Barak for multipurpose threats and cruise weapons. There is the chief of them all, the Arrow family. These systems are much more advanced than the rudimentary Iron dome. Iron dome only gets the hype because she sees more action. 4 Likes |

Multiple by 20-100 , any sectoral air defense will get overwhelmed Currently only cost effective solution is to use jammers to deny sat nav , still collateral damage will be there AAA is also there but than will depend on the search and track capabilities Or go for low cost anti drone micro missile system which can fire 100s of micro missiles at swarms with low collateral damage 6 Likes

Exnavyboy62:I don't think Nigeria have a frigate; maybe I'm mal-informed, What's d difference between lst and lhd, aren't they both amphibious assault ships?... What makes one better than the other? |

Faithful007:Iron dome is not rudimentary though, that they spent 10 yrs perfecting it from US fundings. First time I'm hearing of david sling, barak and arrow family; I will have some fun research then, but why haven't they used them on gaza instead opt to use conventional fighter jets |

davefurn: Actually the Nigerian Navy has no frigates for now. The NNS Aradu is grounded but it refers to the Hamilton class cutters and P18N Corvettes as Frigates because of their big size hence the reason why they have pennant numbers like F90, F91, F92 and F93. There is a difference between LSTs, LHDs and Amphibious assault ships LSTs are amphibious landing ships that can carry at most a Max. of 300 troops and 30+ vehicles and they can also carry 1 helicopter and a drone depending on the size of the landing helipad and the hangar. They also possess a front bow ramp and they are lightly armed with 12.7mm guns or 30mm RCWS for close quarter combat. They can weigh 1000 tons or more Examples are Damen LST 100, LST 120 LHDs are bigger amphibious vessels that can carry up to 3,4,5... to 20 or more helicopters and they can carry a Max of 800+ troops. They don't possess a front bow ramp, instead it's from the back and they can be armed with short range SAM and CIWS guns for self defense. They can weigh 30,000 tons or more but in Algeria's case, their San Giorgio LHD weighs 8,000 tons. Examples are China's Type 75 LHD, France's Mistral class LHD. Then Amphibious Assault ships or Landing Platform Docks are ships bigger than LSTs but smaller than LHDs. They can carry a Max of 700+ troops and they are armed with 76mm naval guns, 40mm guns and 12.7mm guns. Their 76mm guns or 40mm can be used for naval fire support. They can weigh from 12,000 tons to 20,000 tons and also don't possess front bow ramps. It is also from the back for them. Examples are the US San Antonio LPDs, China's Type 71 LPD For better understanding; Pic 1-LST Pic 2-LHD Pic 3- LPD or AAS 6 Likes

Stormtrooper11: There are reports currently circulating that Nigeria received deeply upgraded F-7NI from China, with upgrades enhancing their Air to ground capabilities. The Nigerian Air Force also received at least 1 attrition replacement FT-7NI trainer variant. In all 10 Fighter jets were received from China, 9 upgraded F-7s and 1 F-7 trainer for a total number of 12 units F-7NI. 7 Likes |
