Exnavyboy62: The Nigerian Navy does not refer to the Hamilton and P18N as frigates. The 'F' designation is because they are fighting ships. The Navy calls them OPVs (P18N) and long-range OPVs (Hamilton) 5 Likes |

lionel4power: They do call them frigates. You can make a research on them. I passed out from a Nigerian Navy Secondary School and our instructors and officers tells us things like this. The F on a ship means it's serving as a frigate(even though it's not actually a frigate) e.g the NNS Thunder and Okpabana The P on a ship means it's serving as a patrol vessel e.g the NNS Oji and Karaduwa The A on a ship means it's serving as an Auxiliary vessel e.g the NNS Ologbo, NNS Nwamba 6 Likes |

AID TO CIVIL AUTHOURITY: NAF AIRLIFTS RELIEF MATERIALS TO FLOODED COMMUNITIES IN BAYELSA STATE In line with its constitutional mandate of providing aid to civil authority, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) has commenced the airlift of relief materials to riverine communities in Bayelsa State affected by the recent flooding. The relief materials, which were airlifted from Enugu State to Igbogenne community in Bayelsa State via Port Harcourt, are intended to be redistributed to other riverine communities adversely affected by the recent flooding in the State. The airlift of the relief materials also aligns with the Chief of the Air Staff, Air Marshal Oladayo Amao’s directive to all operational units and commanders to ensure they provide the necessary assistance required by all government agencies towards alleviating the sufferings of Nigerians affected by this year’s unprecedented flooding in some parts of the country. The relief materials were airlifted by the C-130 aircraft from Enugu to Port Harcourt and subsequently ferried to Igbogenne in Bayelsa State using the Mi-35M and EC-135 helicopters where it was then redistributed to affected communities and villages. More relief materials are expected to be airlifted in the coming days from other parts of the country to affected flooded communities in Bayelsa State and other States in the country. The NAF has a long history of providing aids in form of airlift to civil authourities. Recall that in March 2020, the NAF airlifted medical materials donated by the Jack Ma foundation consisting of 107 boxes of medical supplies and equipment weighing over 1,360kg. Also, in April 2020, the NAF airlifted medical equipment and supplies donated by the Turkish government from Lagos to Abuja. Additionally, in March 2021, the NAF airlifted Covid-19 medical relief materials donated by the Economic Community of West Africa States. kabe1:It's literally your LST but with the added advantage of having additional helicopters(transport and AH) to support landing troops.....not only will it benefit Nigeria in terms of conventional force projection but with peacekeeping operations as well(ECOMOG comes to mind) ...Lessons from our operation in CAR should come to mind wrt air support. |

jl115:Looking at a map, I struggle to see where Nigeria would need an LHD to deploy air support. The whole Gulf of Guinea AO is a flight away. The 2 LSTs make infinitely more sense. 4 Likes |

jl115: Nigeria has no requirement for an LHD. Buying such a ship would be an infinitely waste of resources. What Nigeria needs is another LST, same size and displacement as NNS Kada. If we look at our deployment to Gambia, Nigeria could not move armour to Gambia during the early stages of the intervention. However because of during this year's deployment to Guinea Bissau men, armour and light skin vehicles were all moved at once. While an LHD provides same sealift and more, Nigeria does not have any expeditionary ambitions, nor the budget to support and sustain the operations of an LHD. What Nigeria needs at the moment is to quickly get in the second LST to support NNS Kada, also investments in Medium Utility Helicopter like the MI-17. The recent flooding has exposed Nigeria's lack of adequate air mobility in peace time. We have used frontline MI-35M Attack Helicopters and EC-135 helicopters for roles that the MI-17s should carry out. 5 Likes |

kabe1:no expeditionary ambitions yet you want another LST?? A bit contradictory don't you think... Also sending armour without air support ain't great bru.. 2 Likes |

jl115: It's not contradictory. Nigeria has no expeditionary ambitions, however to ensure security and the flow of trade in Nigeria, Nigeria needs to have the capability to deploy troops, armour and aid across the West-African quickly and efficiently. This is why the Nigerian Navy has a requirement for a minimum of 2 LSTs. 4 Likes |

jl115: What is air support? The ability to use Commercially available drones in combat zone is air support, besides we had no problems deploying fighter jets, helicopters and transport aircrafts to Gambia, but we could not deploy armour on time. 4 Likes |

kabe1:Nigeria has none when it comes to an Expeditionary doctrine. They go to great lengths to punch below the belt. Even the second LST it was only after the first one was almost completed that it dawned on them the importance and implications of having a Sister Ship. 1 Like |
