You are the classic example of the failure of the Nigerian educational system. A 4.04/5 GPA and yet you need someone to "put you through the course of study", you're not even sure what you want to study, whether it should be a masters or PhD and the uni you would like to attend? embarrassing.

I think you are the only person who can answer this question. Like why did you decide to ditch your degree in Biochemistry for an Msc in IT. If you can't answer that question, I'll suggest don't bother wasting your time going to the embassy for a visa.

Hi everybody,

I got accepted into two MPH programs in the USA: Tulane and NYU to start this January.

The decisions came in December last year. I’m yet to get the i20. One of the schools sent in an affidavit of support to fill. Total estimate is about 65k USD (30 m). I want to use my dads account as my sponsor/guarantor. The problem is he has only 7m in his account. I don’t know if I can also use my late mums account. She has 5m in that account. Also what are my chances of even getting a visa as resumption date is very close and I don’t even have i20 yet.

I’ll appreciate all suggestions and comments.

Me: I'm aware I have quite a bit of an unusual situation, i'm going for a degree in nursing even tho I already have a bachelors degree, but I'm going for this program in this College to get some really specific knowledge and hands-on practical training that I can't get here in Nigeria to enable me transfer to the University of Houston for a Professional Dual Masters degree in Public Health Nursing with a concentration in Epidemiology, I have full funding from the school but will need to meet some requirements before I can transfer.

VO: Ohh you have an admission from the UofH
Me: Yes officer, I do?

VO: How did you hear about this school?
Me: My ex supervisor at the WHO recommended the school to me as he is an Alumna of the school.

VO: So how many schools did you apply to?
Me: I applied to 3 schools (mentions them), but I chose this college because they accepted to waive courses I had taken in my undergraduate degree program, and I was directly admitted into the Nursing program, this translates into completing the program in a shorter time.

VO: What do you currently do for work?
Me: I currently work with the WHO and National Hospital in Abuja as a Medical Officer, where alongside my colleagues, we provide holistic and therapeutic care and management to cancer patients, sickle cell disease patients and Haemophilia patients. As a rep from the WHO, I collaborate with UNICEF and USAIDS and UKAIDS to collate and analyze data of individuals from underrepresented communities and IDP camps across Nigeria and West Africa especially victims of Endemic diseases like HIV/AIDS, Malaria, Typhoid, and Hepatitis as well as victims of gender abuse and domestic violence, where we set up point referral systems to mapped out facilities to access health care (Cuts in), she was looking at my DS while I spoke.

VO: So how will you be covering this deficit.
Me: My father was required to demonstrate his ability to fund my studies before my I20 was issued, he's a medical doctor who lives in his own house and has a medical facility here in lagos, like me he also works with the WHO. He's also a serial entrepreneur and owns xyz investment limited, with my mum as the company's director, it's more of a family business. I'm not quite sure how many workers they have at the company but I think about 22 as the company is fully automated and don't require so many workers. Combined, they make an annual income of 310million, I'm not sure if this is the revenue every year but for their last Fiscal Year they made this amount. I also have a study leave that provides me 65% of my...(cuts me).

VO: Whats your post study plan?
Me: I completely blanked out, i mean we kept looking at each other for over 20 or so seconds (at this point i just kept praying in my mind).

VO: What will this program do for you?
ME: Well quite a lot, first I'll be coming back to Nigeria to work as a Clinical Associate with the WHO and USAID, this position will see me jump on-board the ongoing Typhoid vaccine introduction in Nigeria, we're currently at the data gathering stage of the project to assess and analyze the burden of the disease in Nigeria. Furthermore, this career path for me is a double edged sword as I could decide to focus either on Public Health challenges or on health care delivery systems bordering around Nursing or even both. This path also projects me towards managing my father's medical facility in future should he retire.

VO: Looking into my eyes, so you speak all these languages, thats a lot (smiling)?

On my I-20 the school stated I am required to come for orientation by 7th.
Since visa processing would take more than that, I believe that's what gave me this refusal. They probably concluded I won't meet up as the school required.

Every V.O knows that a student can request for late arrival letter from their school and if that was the problem, she would have asked you to tender your letter of late arrival
Also, after an interview, it takes only 3 working days for visa to be printed on your passport. So your visa would have come out on that same 7th and you can pickup and travel on the 8th which is not late

The only reason why you were denied is because the USA want to reduce the number of Nigerians they issue visas to. They are basically denying everyone whether you have been to the US or not

I was denied last year, I had a full tuition waiver and had been to the US and Canada between 2015/2017 and I was denied for no reason

The sooner Nigerians realize that USA don’t want we Nigerians in their country, the better for us.

I applied for UK and I got it easily

Not necessarily true. UK doesn't require you to come for a physical interview, but US does. So US does better work in scrutinizing applicants in real time and under pressure.
If you dont have a clearly a defined goal on how your course is tied to your home country, you are going to have a tough time in front of the VO.
UK cares more about £$ that Naija students bring, US cares more about you getting stranded financially and having to depend on their system for support.
US does not have anything against Naija…. most of dont prepare very well. I remembered a guy who got admitted into software engineering and he could not say another name for a computer virus in front of the VO.. he was denied. Folks have to prep and get drilled in real time via mock interviews. I was helping someone last yr, told to prep very well, he didnt listen, he got an agent who told him to focus more on shoring up his finances.. VO gave him a fast denial without looking at his financials

Around 198$ and you can register it yourself. I did mine myself but the payment process was done by someone outside the country.

carry your frustrated mind go rest. The primary reason why you applied for Nursing is because some people told you that your chances of approval would be higher… lol Keep studying other applicants’ transcripts. Pls do share visa transcript

I think it’s ok to use a statement within April 2022- November 2022. As long as it’s within 6 months before your interview, that’s considered current and can be presented at the embassy.

Please anyone picked DHL Ikeja as passport pickup location? I was told the office is temporarily closed when I got there.

I don’t think the current amount in both your parents account is enough to cover the total amount listed by the school. Combined the amount you have is N12m and the school’s estimated cost of attendance is $65k (29m) per year. How do you plan to cover the deficit?
You have to resolve this before you appear before a VO.

Also your chances of getting a visa this January is virtually nonexistent. In Abuja currently, the earliest available interview date is November 2023. I’m guessing Lagos is the same because a lot of people transferred their interviews to Lagos after Abuja’s embassy closed and they are yet to get a date. So I’ll suggest deferring to a different session.

You obviously can’t afford any of this program currently. Professional Masters are very expensive. You should look out for research based masters in a related field or look at cheaper MPH programs.

NYC has a very expensive COL. How would you afford that considering the fact that MPH students cannot work as RAs and TAs? I’m not sure if it is too late, but Tulane University PhD programs are tuition free with stipends and free to apply. Depending on your interest, you can consider any of the under listed programs. If you’re not interested in a PhD, you can always Master out of the program.
