N800,500 Is All You Can get, Zenith Bank Tells Customer Whose N4m Was taken Without Authorisation

Zenith Bank Plc has said it is only able to recover a sum of N800,500 to Chiamaka Agim, the Lagos State resident whose N4.039 million mysteriously vanished from her account with the bank on Monday.
FIJ had earlier reported how the money was deducted from Agim’s Zenith Bank account without her consent on January 9.

Out of the debited sum, N3.937 million went to an Access bank account while the remaining N102,000 was transferred to a UBA account.

To reclaim her money, Agim had reported the mysterious deduction at two different branches of Zenith bank the following day.

“A Zenith Bank official called me around 6:00 pm on Wednesday,” the Lagos resident said while updating FIJ on the bank’s response.

Agim said she received the call hours after she went to Zenith Bank branch at Alagomeji to follow up on the complaint she lodged regarding the incident.

The branch manager at Alagomeji said the bank was working on it and I would hear from them soon,” she said. “Then the bank called me in the evening, saying I should check my email.”

Agim said the male bank official notified her during the phone conversation that the transaction was done via her e-token.

This revelation baffled Agim ,who told FIJ that she had never requested for an e-token from the bank.

He made me look as if I did not know what I was saying because he insisted that I have a token. Perhaps they gave it to someone who is using it on my account,” she said.

Then he said they were only able to salvage N800,500 from Access Bank. What I picked from the conversation was that I would only get this amount.

He also said UBA told them that their customer does not depict a fraudster. I wondered how they were able to arrive at that conclusion.

How can the bank make such a statement while I am in pains due to debits that I never consented to? So, how does a fraudster look?”

While Agim believes that a bank insider is responsible for the strange deduction from her account, she also feels Zenith Bank wants to scare her away so that the issue would be swept under the carpet.

How can they give me N800,500 out of over N4 million? I am not going to let it go like that because it’s a huge amount of money,” she said.

In the document obtained by FIJ, Zenith Bank informed Agim that the financial institution was not liable for the incident since her e-Token and four-digit secret PIN details were used to enroll on the Mobile Banking App on a device.

The bank also added that the same device was subsequently used to carry out the transactions.

When contacted on Wednesday for comments, Unah Romie, a Zenith Bank official, said: “Please be advised that we cannot provide details of the complaint to a third party as you are not the account holder.”

Romie also said any communication regarding the complaint would be directed to Agim who made the complaint.

Sue them and claim that the unauthorised deduction has denied you the chance to execute a lucrative business deal, and demand for damages.

But let's be fair to the banks too. Even if a fraudster has your atm card how come they have your PIN too? Also, those enrolments will send an otp to the customers registered phone lines. Did she loose her phone too? The bank even mentioned the type of phone used to do the enrolments. Is it the same phone she is using?

Big organisations will ALWAYS deny culpability.

I have been their victim, and they have good lawyers that shell out convincing statements ..

This one almost convinced me to be honest.

Agim said the male bank official notified her during the phone conversation that the transaction was done via her e-token.

This revelation baffled Agim ,who told FIJ that she had never requested for an e-token from the bank.

“He made me look as if I did not know what I was saying because he insisted that I have a token. Perhaps they gave it to someone who is using it on my account,” she said.

Since they said the account holder does not look like a scammer, they should then provide him to the police and the court, so he can tell them how and why her money was found in his account.

Some sites (eg. aliexpress, dynadot) do not require OTP for such transaction to be processed.

Don't blame the bank. From what I have seen, either a former colleague or a friend/relative registered her on the e token platform and committed this fraud. The bank is not liable in this case.

this is an insider work, all those information are in the bank. The bank know your 4 digit PIN, the bank know your BVN, the bank know the phone you register the app, infact the even have your thumb print.
The bank is responsible for everything.
Banks in Nigeria are more than armed robbers. I don't blame my granny who refused to open an account no matter the persuasion.

This is the major problem, poor salary, how can you employ somebody to be managing millions of naira and pay them 60,000 naira, it's madness.

Most banks make around 40-50 million naria per month, why can't they pay their workers well? Instead they will only employ contract staff with HND and pay them 60k/month with the excuse that they have HND that's why they are being paid that low, of course the staff will steal of given the opportunity.

The moment you request for atm card, Your account safety is 1% out of 100%..

There’s a device that can be installed on Pos, atm. The device can record pin & info. The process is called skimming..

Now there’s digital skimming. Instead of going thru the Pos/atm risk, they inject some software codes on some website. Whatever you do on such website, the software will record. If you use your bank details, it will record & it won’t even occur to the website owner..

This is why making payment with your bank details online is risky. You can never be sure if the website you’re intending to input your details have been skimmed. Many skimmed website are on Instagram. People don’t usually know. They keep buying things thinking it starts and ends there..

Zenith bank isn’t the cause of her problem here cuz I can see people blaming banks. USA is suffering this same issh on a daily..

Be very careful how you use your bank account details to make payment online. Infact, up to dating apps like badoo, tinder etc. Anything that’s built with software can be skimmed..
