My Interview With Channels TV Was Taken Out Of Context - Wole Soyinka by fergie001: 2:54pm On Apr 04, 2023
Nobel laureate, Prof. Wole Soyinka, has berated the media for taking part of his interview with Channels TV out of context and some parts, sliced into new ones.

Channels TV aired the one-and-half-hour interview it had with Soyinka a week ago on Monday.

Soyinka, in a statement on Tuesday, titled “Media Responsibility”, said he had read, at least, thus far – this morning, extracted from a one-and-a-half-hour-long interview, conducted a week ago with CHANNELS Television.

He said his findings brought to the fore, the critical responsibility of the media in transmitting the spoken, even recorded word to the public, saying this was especially crucial in a time of civic uncertainty.

He said, “When remarks are taken out of context, spliced into a new one, provided a sensational headline, distortions become stamped on public receptivity, and the central intent of one’s remarks becomes completely unrecognisable.

“I denounced the menacing utterances of a Vice-Presidential aspirant as unbecoming. It was a gladiatorial challenge directed at the judiciary and, by implication, the rest of the democratic polity.

“But what on earth has happened to my even more urgent condemnation of the physical violence inflicted on those designated “strangers” in Lagos in the lead-up to, and during governorship elections?

“This prejudicial selectivity is a betrayal of trust, and I find it contemptuous of public deserving. My critique of incipient fascism in the movement remains grounded in indisputable evidence. Throughout the interview, I continued to stress that the final word had yet to be pronounced on the elections – that omission renders the full message tendentious!”

Soyinka said his rejection of fascism is nothing new, as on three occasions, he was able to send a message to Peter Obi that, if he lost the election, it would be his followers who lost it for him.

“It was depressing to watch his lieutenant, a crucially positioned voice of a movement that has “broken the mould”, threaten the totality of social existence. Whatever our ideological leaning, is Donald Trump the ideal template for a burgeoning democracy in the nation?

“On a minor note, I remain concerned by the alleged complaint by me of people not following “instructions”. If words are garbled in recording, the speaker can be reached for clarification – else, simply leave out the unclear section completely to avoid misrepresentation.

“After all, piecemeal transmission is legitimate proceeding, as long as a part is not presented as the whole. I am not a member of the Labour Party, so how can giving ‘instructions’ become my role? Like a number of others, I have admittedly contributed to the making of this moment – going back several years – and it is painful to have the followers of such a movement, send it slithering backwards and down the fascistic slope.

“I hope CHANNELS plans to provide the entire interview. After months of having to endure total fabrications of partisan utterances that are strange to me, even in their very choice of words, it is most aggravating to have this, the first I have conceded in my authenticated person, casually subjected to selective editing and dissemination.

Oga you are speaking big grammar.
Which responsible democracy would allow a drug trafficker to be president?

And when you called Patience Jonathan a sheepotamus, was that a compliment?

Did Agbero MC Olumo, FF Kolanut, Bayo Gagaraga make Tinubu to lose? Hypocrisy!!

Obi win and lost big in this election,he should have ran away with those 6 million plus votes, build stronger structure, make alliances then come back but his fans messed things up for him and obi himself is not helping at all, he lost 89% of almost 7 million votes in just 3 weeks, what exactly went wrong in just 3 weeks?

See soyinka advice to obi👇

Those critics taking about datti are all fools.

Datti talked about how that fatso Ahmad lawan contested for presidency and senate on the same election even as a sitting lawmaker. It was the Supreme Court that gave him his win. A daylight robbery everyone saw

People that did not contest or win primaries the court gave them thier win. That is wrong. And the Nigerian judicial system needs to be rolled into the bin for all these abuses. Even lowlife charlatans now say go to court because they control these courts ? On this premise the courts cannot be trusted to mediate this challenge against asiwajus and obi’s hearing, because they re useless.
An interim govt would then be the next sensible thing here. Because if the court where to go on thier usual ways then revolution and anarchy that comes with it will be justified.

But the Apc party that have pitched thier men as members of the judicial officers wants obi team to go to court because they control it’s proceedings and pronouncements. They also are doing everything within thier power to make sure people accept this pronouncements that have already been predetermined. Even going as far as threatening treason charges on people.

Those who come to equity must come with clean hands. The stolen mandate must be returned or the Apc and thier supporters will have serious problems. I’m eager to see what the judgment will be. Because like hope uzodima the Supreme Court made governor after coming 4th in an election. I’ll love to see the crazy judgment that will bring this justified spark in the political history of Nigeria.

People like mc oluomo won’t matter, ask of Toni kabaka in Benin he will tell you what we did to him. Now he is chill and behaving proper .Shoe get size .

And as for those idiots like ffk and elrufai that think they have claws. They will understand that others have claws as well. Sharp claws that can a scratch and cause pain.

Prof did not make any further explanation, Fake news from agbado farm grin
The writer went and use big grammar to make it look like it was Soyinka that was speaking.

He described described the elections as “not exactly the most edifying exercise that we’ve been through.”
Simple as ABC.

This man contributed to what nigeria is currently passing through saying peter obi's supporters are fascists and violent is completely false. The obidient movement have been very peaceful despite all the provocations. The apc would have since set the whole nigeria on fire by now if they were given half of the treatment given to obi and his labor party.

We like to use innuendos to cover up the crux of the matter.
.....taken out of context how?
Journalism believes that brevity is the soul of sagacity.
This, Channel did and Prof. is on the defence?
I maybe wrong but I think old age is catching up on my dearest laureate.

Bro you are right. My surprise is why can't any obidients ask where are the 5million + voters that voted for obi during presidential election and the entire 5 million + voters disappeared with just 2 or weeks in governorship election and obi party lost entire 36 states of the federation?

If I'm obi with the massive humiliation during governorship election I will just jet out of Nigeria the shame is massive but due to his shamelessness he is still talking mandate as if na hin papa owned Nigeria.
