Our kids even when they are stubborn and disobedient (which is normal) still need to be able to have respect for us without the threat of violence. Your kids need to be able to look at , your presence, the way you carry yourself etc and feel a sense of respect and reverence for you. If violence is the only way to get that from them, there are baseline issues that need to be resolved

Fear, coercion and the threat of violence has always been the glue that held most African relationships of every kind together. From marriage to parenting, from work to politics, leadership to public service. Its always the stick.

The problem is that fear can only take you so far. It can buy short term loyalty but cannot spur independent reasoning and the liberty that fuels aspiration and creativity. You have tons of families here where children are bred like one trick ponies.

If you take a child with bruises to the hospital, the hospital is legally expected to report the signs of abuse. This is the case in most developed countries. Do not think you can hide these things as people are expected to report abuse when they see it in western countries — they do not seek the permission of the potential abuser before they do.
