Tourist123: So let's be clear here. Your grouse is that the cab you took from the airport to your apartment costs 13k for a 35 min drive. Let's all do the math together. 13k naira in USD is less than $18. So that means for a 35 minutes drive from the airport to your apartment, you paid less than $20 in Nigeria. Now let's compare that to the US. How much do you think you would have paid for UBER or LYFT for that same 35 minutes drive from the airport to your apartment?... Why do we just like to be condescending on our country. For a 35 minutes drive in Yankee, you would pay double, if not triple that amount. So what exactly is the point you are trying to make here for heaven's sake? Stop the comparison. Enjoy your vacation in peace. Gas in Nigeria is currently less than a dollar for a liter. I'm pretty sure you are one of the ones that is criticizing the current subsidy removal. But back in the country you currently reside, a liter of gas is more expensive than what it is currently selling in Naija, and i bet you buy it happily, smiling sheepishly, but you are quick to condemn naija. You talk about the minimum wage of 30k. Do you think anyone really earn 30k monthly? or are you not aware that it is calculated by the level in the civil service... Let's all try to calm down a little and use our senses. You take Uber from airport in naija for 13k, and you are here complaining about it. Meanwhile, that same 13k converted to USD won't even pay for a 35 minutes drive wherever you're coming from. Guy, abeg chill. 1 Like 2 Shares |

OChimex: The Nigerian people writ large have made their country what it is. Anyone who seriously contemplates the character of the Nigerian will not be surprised at the state of the nation. Nigerians PREFER policies that generate poverty and always VOTE for leaders that promise to implement such policies....mainly SOCIALIST policies that empower government and suppress individual freedoms to own property, price their products & services as they wish and do business with whomsoever they wish. I write that with EVIDENCE. Back in Jan 2012 the government of the day abolished petrol subsidies. A solid majority of the Nigerian people opposed the withdrawal and suborned sustained labor strikes and rioting that paralyzed the nation. Not done with that, in the next elections of 2015 they voted for a political party that campaigned with a claim that fuel subsidies didn't even exist, so there was nothing to remove. It's really an amazing tale of ignorance because Nigeria has subsidized petrol since 1973! There are Nigerian Professors like Farook Kperogi (Journalism) and Moses Ebe Ochonu, (African History) teaching in American Universities, who claim there is nothing like fuel subsidy. It's just amazing, what else can I say. It took about 10 years for the effects of retaining subsidies to manifest. Does anyone still think there was nothing like fuel subsidy? The Nigerian people have evolved a SOCIALIST culture. So I can guarantee that the Nigeria of 2035 will be much worse than today. Socialism doesn't work, it creates poverty and violence. Nigerians DESERVE everything they're getting from their country. They voted for it. Good Luck to Nigerians! 2 Likes |

less than 30k? probably private sector or all those one-man business, definitely not civil servants.. Are you also aware that the federal minimum wage in the US is $7.25/hour? Even people that earn triple of that still struggles... now imagine earning that low.. tensazangetsu20: |

MrBrownJay1: Dude. You are just a village man who mistakenly sees internet and start pulling shits from internet to prove your point. You have never left the shores of Nigeria. That’s why you come here and start calling people names and shaming them without even knowing them. Mind you, I am an HVAC tech and I make way above $120k yearly. People who work in restaurant or fast food earns way more than $20 an hour, because they get lots of tips. Every single individual who is an adult and have no job files for unemployment and govt pays them enough to sustain them. Big cities pay way higher above $17 most times. Don’t worry, one day you will leave village Nigeria and come to US or Europe you will understand. I won’t disturb my peace again trying to educate you. If you doubt, download indeed App and see for yourself plenty jobs wey go dey beg you to come work. Anybody unemployed is not because there is no job, it’s because they are picky. People working and living in their cars doesn’t mean they can’t afford a house. They just don’t want to pay such high rent. I will tell you again and again, Poverty is a choice in America and Europe. Whatever shanties and homeless people you see are their choice. They either chose to do drugs or migrate illegally. No hard working person is poor in US and EU 5 Likes |

Oga, calm down small... not everyone working can actually get a car finance... and where in hell will you get a monthly repayment as low as $100?.... make una dey try take am easy nah.. $100 for a car note monthly?... you nor even try say maybe per paycheck, you say monthly.. haba nah... no car shop, bank or finance house will take $100 per paycheck sef, talk more of monthly. Nah 25 years you wan take repay the loan?... abi nah mortgage.. Again, you said nobody lives below $200 daily in the US.... Is there another US in the sky abi nah this same one wey dey on earth?... Oga, calm down... people lack clothing, housing, shelter, and good water in the ALMIGHTY US. I mean even people working 40 hours a week. Guy, if you dey stay US and you don't lack nothing, be grateful to God... and also some hardwork and skills that pays good money. People wey dey do customer care or work for walmart or Amazon warehouse, how much do you think they earn? Now, with the inflation and the cost of things everywhere, how do you expect these people to be able to afford all those things you listed? you need to go out to really see how people dey live oooo.... It's not rosy for everyone out there. Let me ask you a question. All those people on Medicaid, how much you think say dem dey earn annually? Make no mistake, once you start to dey earn a dollar above the Medicaid threshold, you don't qualify for the Medicaid anymore. How you think say those people take dey get healthcare?.... abi nah ER we wan talk... You don go ER before?.... hope you know say your insurance nor cover ER if dem nor admit you?... If you go ER, nothing less than $250 go comot your pocket for copay.... so nah person wey never chop belle full wan go ER?... even if nah ordinary headache dem check you for for ER, you go still pay that $200-$250 copay... Nah rent own we wan talk?.... even for projects, how much you think say rent dey talk now?.... so now person wey dey earn $12.50/hr, work 40 hours a week. How much you think that person earns in a month to be able to afford rent, car note, clothing, food, healthcare, etc? OChimex: |

Bro, let me tell you the truth. Over 90% of the western nations depend on heavy taxations to get things done. In Nigeria, we pay little to nothing, compared to these western countries. In the US, you pay tax on anything and everything.... now, not just that alone... you see most of these welfare programs, they are taken from working people's pay. In the US, you go pay federal, state, and county tax. E nor stop there ooo, you go still pay social security tax on every pay check. On a $2100 paycheck, if you're married filing jointly, the deduction from the $2100 paycheck is nothing less than $400... now if you're single, you'll pay nothing less than $520 on that same paycheck... now medical and some other small deductions never dey oooo... if you go store, even if nah $1 shit you buy, you must pay tax... you wan pay rent oo, you must pay tax.. all your bills (electricity, water, sewage, trash, etc), you go still pay tax on am. Even if you're selling your car, both buyers and sellers have to pay tax. Even on inheritance, you still have to pay tax. So that's how the government have enough money to sponsor most of these programs. Same thing can be replicated in Naija, but the truth is, the citizens nor go ever gree for government to take such drastic steps. I agree, our politicians are selfish and bad, but let's face the reality, the country is broke. Our revenue from Oil and non-oil can't afford to give Nigerians the good life we so desire, never. tensazangetsu20: |

tensazangetsu20: Really? I personally know several young people that earn less than that in Nigeria....private school teacher in Owerri, sales clerk or sales girl in a super market in Shangisha neighborhood in Lagos. Both aged between 27 and 30. And there's plenty of UNEMPLOYED youths depending on the charity of family and friends. Well, I guess the facts here depends on AGE. I can definitively tell you there's PLENTY of people aged 25 and under who earn less than 30K per month. Good Luck to Nigerians. OChimex: I read your earlier assertions on the causes of poverty in the West being "voluntary". Largely true except in cases of physical or mental disease. I hope you can understand that? It's a big problem because the very fact of these countries being so advanced enables such unfortunate people to survive and slide into poverty. Thanks...and have a good night. |

GreatKingg: See dude, in the US, we understand. Some super rich than others, but nobody is below poverty line here. No place in the US you will go that you won’t see electricity, good drinking water and all amenities, unlike Nigeria. No hard working man in America is poor. Unless you are into drugs or illegal. And I say it again, poverty is a choice in US and Europe, unlike Nigeria where people are willing to work but no job. There is nothing like no job in America 2 Likes |

OChimex: A) fast food employees (like Mc Ds, starbucks etc) barely get any tips. if you knew anything about the US , you would know that fast food workers DONT GET TIPPED IN THE US. stop confusing restaurant waiters who are sometimes earning 3-4 times the minimum salary JUST ON TIPS and fast food workers who earn just their minimum salary. GET REAL!!! B) you sir dont know what you are talking about....if you've never had a job in the US, you CANNOT receive unemployment benefit. same as if you get fired or quit your job (in some states)... GET REAL!!! C) advertising for Jobs is one thing, but as there are hundreds of unemployed people who apply for that one job, saying that there is no poverty in the US is the LIE FROM THE PIT OF HELL! go to any job site in Nigeria and there will also be hundreds of jobs advertised...GET REAL!!! D) this is not a dikc waving contest as anyone can claim whatever life they desire on faceless forum so lets stick to the issue at hand. but claiming that there is no poverty in US/EUrope is false and any person who has ever lived around the world can attest to that. again, THERE IS NO COUNTRY ON EARTH THAT HAS NO POVERTY...let alone a place like US/EUROPE. GET REAL!!! E) you think its everyone that can get housing off some low paying job with yeye part time contract abi? you think its easy to save thousands of dollars for aplication fee, deposit fee on a low paying jobs abi? you think its anybody that can pass the CREDIT/BACKGROUND check before you can get housing, abi?!? you think its anybody who can get the proper references to rent an apt on a low paying job, abi?! you think its everybody that can earn the minimum "3x the rent" salary before you can rent a place, abi? you sir dont know what you are talking about... some of these people have 3 jobs and STILL cant get decent housing...GET REAL!!! F) a great deal of the country is crawling in DEBTS, living the type of lives they cannot afford, using credit cards and financing to make ends meet and have a semblant of a life. GET REAL!!! G) you truly sound like someone who just landed in the US... you are clueless about the country and need to get to know the country a lil bit more, travel around (if you can afford it) and discover a bit more. by the time you see enough trailer parks and ghettos, na that time you will remember what i have been telling you. 4 Likes |

Re: How Do People Survive In Nigeria? by OChimex: 11:10pm On Jun 05, 2023 |
MrBrownJay1: The WHO definition of poverty is - someone living below $2 a day. Nobody lives below $2 a day in the US. Everybody must not have nice house or nice cars, but nobody will go hungry and without light and water and clothes in the US. Even shelter. I eat at Qdoba, Chipotle, and many restaurants, whenever you want to pay, there is a tip attached to pay pad, which you can ignore. Any job that fast food job or restaurant that doesn’t attach tip, pays so well. Nobody is hungry in America, Besides, nobody pays 10 -12 dollars in a full time job in America, unless there is huge tips. Or the job is like do nothing almost. I repeat agin, nobody lives below WHO definition of poverty which is living below $2 a day. And no hard working person lacks basics necessities in America 1 Like |
Re: How Do People Survive In Nigeria? by OChimex: 11:15pm On Jun 05, 2023 |
MrBrownJay1: Go read WHO definition of poverty. You will understand that nobody is poor in America. You mistake poverty by comparison. Mind you, if you think poverty is, when one drives a GMC truck and the other drives a 1995 Toyota. No it’s not. Poverty is lacking the basic necessities of life like, food, clothing, shelter, good water and electricity. Nobody lacks these in America. |
Re: How Do People Survive In Nigeria? by MrBrownJay1(m): 11:30pm On Jun 05, 2023 |
OChimex: OChimex: the UNITED STATE CENSUS BUREAU says that there is 40m people living in POVERTY in the US, but i guess you are a better expert on the subject than them and therefore know something they dont.... abi?!?! here enjoy: https://www.census.gov/newsroom/stories/poverty-awareness-month.html#:~:text=Official%20Poverty%20Measure,37.9%20million%20people%20in%20poverty. ... but i understand your way of thinking. you just got to the US, see someone earning minimum 2K monthly, convert that in Naira in your head (aka 1.4M Nairas monthly), and thereafter mistakenly believe that everyone in the US is living comfortable lives. |
Re: How Do People Survive In Nigeria? by GreatKingg: 11:42pm On Jun 05, 2023 |
No, you are wrong. Over 10% of the US population lives below the poverty level. Guy, the poverty level for an individual for yankee nah $13,590. So, your story of nobody lives below the poverty level is completely false. Also, not all cities in the US have access to clean/good drinking water. How many people in the US do you think drink water directly from their tap? Most people depend on bottled water. There are quite a lot of hard-working people that are still poor. Let me ask you this question. What is your definition of hard-working man/woman? People that work 40 hours a week, do you consider them lazy or hard working? Or is it working 2 full time jobs that you consider hard-working? I asked you in my previous post, if you earn $7-$12/hour and work 40 hours weekly, how do you afford the basic necessities? How much is rent where you live? How much is electricity, gas, water, trash, medical insurance, car insurance, food, etc.? Now tell me, how do you afford all these from working 40 hours a week earning $12 or less an hour? Poverty is not a choice for everyone. I agree, there are quite a lot of people that are lazy, they don't want to do any work, just depend on food stamps and house voucher, but there are other majority out there hustling, and still not able to afford basic shits. Have you ever imagined a man with one or two kids earning $20/hour. How does he take care of his home with such pay? So will you now say such person is poor by choice? I believe you know how much childcare cost... even a single person earning $20 is poor... rent alone will take all your paycheck.... now don't tell me it depends on where they live. I'm not sure there's anywhere in the US right now where you will see a monthly rent below $500... you won't see that low even in the projects... OChimex: |
Re: How Do People Survive In Nigeria? by IbeOkehie: 11:55pm On Jun 05, 2023 |
MrBrownJay1: Sir you need to standardize your definition of poverty. The most contemporary measures of poverty include access to amenities such as clean water and stable energy supplies. The vast majority of poor people in the USA have access to such basic amenities of modern life. You have to incorporate some HDI standards. What the people and government of the USA regard as "poverty" is a life of lower middle class comfort in Nigeria. The only people who are *un*avoidably poor in the USA are the physically or mentally ill. Do your research. Cheers. 1 Like |
