From your first paragraph i knew it would be Edo. For some reason it seems Edo parents are not too keen on passing on the language.

Do not be surprised if Davido and Wizkid children can speak the language. Yoruba and Hausa languages are the only languages that may not easily go into extinction especially because of their high illiteracy level.
Many rich folks here in Lagos contract Yoruba teachers to teach their children at home. The parents communicate with the children in Yoruba although some of the children answer back in English.

At least they already showed us that they are sensible enough by giving their children Nigerian names.

Not like the mugus of P-squared with the yeye names they gave their kids and were feeling funky.

You guys need to do something about urhobo language because it's seriously dieing out. I was at ughelli sometime last year and as big the town is. I did not for once hear anybody speak urhobo not even in that very busy market close to otovwodo where a good number of the traders are urhobo themselves, same scenario is unthinkable in Lagos even with it's very cosmopolitan nature.
A lot of urhobo people born in urhoboland particularly around sapele, uvwie, warri and ughelli are unable to speak their language

. Well, you aren't far from the truth..... That has been like a bone in our throats.... the truth is that those of us who were born and bred in Ughelli can't really speak urhobo fluently apart from few families that made it a compulsory thing...... I've alot of friends who can't understand it even tho they are from here too...But that doesn't mean you should write it off so quickly..We have neighboring communities around that constitute ughelli as a town.. Communities such as Afiesere, otovwodo, Ekiugbo and the rest..Those are the communities that speak and understand urhobo well...... Ughelli is just like a town that comprises of different tribes, tho it's an urhobo town...

Nigerian languages became useless the day the British colonized Us and the rest of the world

They will all die 0ut in 50 yrs time
Except yoruba because virtually all yoruba kids can speak yoruba(that’s the only thing I like about their culture)

If black people had sufficient brain power, only the smallest languages should die out. That is, those spoken in some small local governments with very few speakers and have dominant neighbouring languages (e.g. Ibaas, Bole, Yangkam, Geruma etc.)

But languages like Jukun, Ejagham, Gwari, Ebirra, Urhobo, Berom etc. can only die because the people are black iiidiots!

How old is useless for speaking the language of our colonial Masters
is it our fault that we were colonized?

Nawa u o

By the way I speak English and French fluently

It is your parent's (I would not even say ancestors, because I am sure your parents were passed the language) fault that you lost your language. Not colonisation.

Colonisation allowed you to learn a new international language. It is not to blame for losing your own. Blame your parents for that. The probably have inferiority complex and thought it was smart to make your eliminate part of your identity and be more "white" by speaking English only and like a white man.

A correct parent would have made sure you learn your mother tongue, English and even the main language of where you grew up/are living.

Speaking English only is a pathetic manifestation and bad parenting!

It may not be failed parenting especially if it is intertribal marriage and you are living in the city.

If you can speak the main language of that city, then that is fine.

If you are a child of a Urhobo father and Igbo mother, but was raised in Kaduna, if you speak Hausa and English, that is honestly fine.

If you speak only English, na failed parenting.

Currently, there are many Guys who CAN'T those languages u mentioned. sad
I know Many of them.

While the ones who know how to Speak it do NOT teach their Children.
E.g. Wizkid and Davido. I wonder if their children know to speak Yoruba. undecided

In 30 yrs time, ALL Nigerian languages will DIE OFF from the face of the earth. 😒
U lie too smiley
More like a thousand yrs from now.

Igbo people are the luckiest when it come to this. Many of them can speak Yoruba

Many are superstars.

They will speak Yoruba so fluently like a local, you will not have an idea they are not Yoruba until they break into Igbo or you hear their names.

Many speak Igbo, Yoruba and English dead fluently.

That is great parenting.

Absolute shame!

Urhobo is one of the languages that have no excuse for dying out.
