Yes you need a skill to earn side income.
And it will be quite easy for you to scale because you have a sure 450k coming at the end of the month and you can take risk.

I earn around the same amount and I do e-commerce and social media marketing on the side banking around $1k a month combined.

450k is huge, especially in this country.

My advice is for you to learn how to save.

Cut down your expenses, don’t spend recklessly, don’t compete with co-workers and don’t try to impress anybody (including women).

Rent an affordable apartment, start up a business.

(Don’t start building any house immediately, because it’s a liability). It will only tie your wealth in one spot.

Imagine building a house with 30-50m in Lagos, only to get at least 2m yearly as a rent. How long will it take to get back the capital

A House is a long term investment + retirement plan.

Start a business first!

hmmm why say a house is a liability?
Where are you guys learning this from? which investment analyst gave you that advice? is he certified or just a tout?

a house is an asset , which can give you future economic benefit.

and most people I have seen in my first place I built in South East state are either keke drivers or there about. and they slowly built this house over years.. standard houses.

The benefits of owning a house is enormous.

the first house I built. I only had 200k cash at hand and few blocks. that's how I started n with time in 3 years it was completed. it's one of the best decisions I have taken because it gave me a huge leap.

since he said skills then I suggest learning python, sql, machine learning etc this are great n in 2 years he will be a pro

I work in a company and my take home is 450k after tax. My problem is I have been thinking of a skill to learn as this job would not last forever. Aside this job I do not have a skill and as a man I feel one should have a long lasting skill. Please any suggestions would be welcomed aside from online skills. Thank you .

My thought exactly

however with this amount you can acquire as many DS as possible with just a little out of a month salary.

DS is short for DIGITAL SKILL(S)!
I mentor on this and also help interested peeps with DS to master how to create revenue with their DS.

1. Start saving at least 150k every month.

2. Learn a high paying skill example cyber security, Data analytics or data analysis, UI/UX design etc. Don't be ignorant about these I.T skills because they are very high paying and you could be earning above 600k monthly when you get jobs.

3. Thank me later 😎
I like the way people casually mention Cybersecurity as a skill that can be learnt on the side like tailoring

You are right to think this way. Don't let anybody discourge you from this line of thinking. When I was in Nigeria, I was earning an average of 2.5m per month, but I had the same problem as you. The job offered no long-lasting skill. You should be worried if any job you are doing is offering you no long-lasting skill, regardless of the amount you are making. Pick up a skill in tech. There is no shortage there: cybersecurity, data analytics, software development, etc. Gain yourself something that will last a lifetime. At this stage of your thinking, you are already on the way there.

Those saying 450K is more than enough to buy a land and start building do not really understand how expensive things are in Nigeria today. I earn slightly above what the OP mentioned, but believe you me, it's not been easy. If you live in Lagos, Abuja or PH and you are married with kids, you will understand. A 2 bedroom flat in an average neighborhood is over 700K. Cost of fuel and car maintenance is over 60/70K monthly in recent times. School fees for 2/3 children is over 200K per term (600/800K annually). Feeding takes over 100K monthly. Utilities and other miscellaneous dey ooo. Best thing na just to save enough and japa.
same here bro. Save enough and japa.

Learning a skill would require time and effort that your current job may not allow you, what you need is a passive investment or side hustle, with reasonable returns , that won't require so much more of your time.

Something that can grow to the point where you can quit your job and have more control of your time in 3-5 years.

But learning a skill is less risky. Investments or going into business requires a huge capital

If you want to build something you can call your own with this salary, think of one business you understands and look out for someone looking for work in such business and build the business with such. You might not have the time to run the business yourself so you have to trust someone to at least make the minimum profit while your capital/investment remains intact.
