You wan cause family problems?
How will it cause family problems? If a car will facilitate her transport to work, where will the family problems come from?

Please, be careful about this. It is simple: Mrs. [Husband's surname] [Her name] as the case maybe. Congrats to them.

Your sister has an official name,a gift for her should be in her name, there's no point buying her a car if you'll put it in her husbands name, she's an adult and has every right to own a car.If you're feeling her husband will have a problem with it,forget about buying the car.

Nigerian and stupidity. Tufia. If his people wanted to gift him a car, would they ask for your sister's name?

Be like you be feminist eh 🤭😂

Anyway, my suggestions is based on the context that since the OP mentioned the benevolence of his brother in law to him and his family, it only makes sense put of courtesy to buy in both their names a gift to them.

Though OP didn't mention if the in-law on his own could afford to own a car but I believe he should and if he wanted or the wife requested, he could easily get it for her.

Now for the wife's brother to now go behind and buy a car for his sister and in her name could be seen by her husband as underscoring his capacity to provide for his family. You know men can be jealous at times. Just to avoid unnecessary wahala ... buying in their name prevents that with the hope that the husband would read between the lines and say ok - babe you take this car and be using to commute to work. Case close.

If you feel this is not a good option then.... I'm not in a position to debate it any longer with you 😘

Imagine the werey, next oga go say his wife's boss de knack dats why she got the car from the office... me can be complicated 😂

Mindlog:
This reminds me of a couple who came to the UK in September 2021 via study route. The husband was the student while the wife was the dependent and working full time as a domiciliary care worker to support clearing her husband's outstanding tuition fees as the husband was strictly working 20hrs weekly as a student and covered their rent and feeding. Few months down the line, the company gave the wife a small car to be driving to their different service users' homes to provide care, the company gave her a fuel card and were responsible for maintaining the car which she drove home daily even when off shift, the car was with her.

When she was off shift and the car packed in front of their residence, oga go dey insist on wifey to give him car keys so he could drive around for a while but wifey would refuse, reminding him that should he get involved in an accident or got fined for traffic violations while he is the one behind the wheels, she will be in trouble and insurance would not cover the damages. That caused a big strain in their marriage, oga reported her to relatives back in Nigeria of being selfish and arrogant. cheesy cheesy cheesy

What are you doing here, are you not supposed to be on vacation enjoying freshly made oha soup? Your diary sessions, FK's and Primma's are always a pleasure to read. I was besides myself with laughter on the update where you said cho cho cho cho will not kill you this early morning or so.

It is interesting how they keep claiming to have logic and when their logic is scrutinized you realize how fundamentally flawed it is in every way. Just see the majority of them clamouring for the car to be put in the man's name too, meaning, it is what they would want for themselves if they were the OP's brother in law.

Their massive egos/egoes can't handle the car being in wifey's name alone, the one Primma quoted in her shock and awe grin, was even candid enough to reveal his true colours, most are hiding under the guise of marriage will scatter, yen yen yen. If the marriage scatters because of a car gift to a sibling then the OP would realize the man is not as good as he thinks after all.
To even think a man would have issues with what siblings bought for each other is so irritating. And most of us if we wanted to give our sister's gifts were we going to put her husband's name?

If I were your sister's husband and you buy a car in your sister's name, I may not take it lightly. It is a very sensitive issue. It depends on your brother-in-law. If he is a traditional Nigerian man, he will read meaning into it - like - are you trying to say I am not taking care of my wife?

So if you are not being political about it, buy the car in your brother in law's name. You are mixing up 2 things which are not related: 1) you want to give them a surprise 2) you want to buy a car for your sister, in her name to aid her in going to work due to distance (to avoid stress).

I wish you the Best sha
I just hope your wife and girlfriend read this. Like really? Omo, I'm surprised people still think like this. Better go hustle and get things you need.

Are you male or female?

If you are male please tell the OP his sister is worthy of good things and deserving of good things, including a car of her own, whether married or single.

I don't know the world we live in today where a married woman is seen as not being good enough to own a car unless her husband is made part of the deal. Tell him that lady was first his sister before becoming someone's wife.

Let me head back to the Steve Harvey thread.
Male
I have said that I think he should get the car for his sister. And put her name including the surname she answers now.

if the man is a good man as op rightly said then he should know the car gift was for his wife and that shouldn't be a problem.

Traditional man or no traditional man has nothing to do with gift. A gift can be given to anyone of your choice. If i want to buy a gift for my married sister, I will put her name and surname. Mrs her name and hubby surname. If she's also using her maiden name, I will add it to it

🤣. Why are you flabbergasted na? You no dey clean your house or detox your system from time to time?

This is digital detox and house cleaning, I like to take down my posts when a thread is a few days old or the people I engaged with have seen/read my posts.

How have you been? Thanks for the reminder sef, let me clean house now ahead of the ember months.
That's cool. I do that sometimes but with posts I feel are too private to stay online for long.
It's just that for some reasons, there are select few I just log in to read their posts from time to time.
That's how I noticed and I did miss your posts. I love reading them.

I'm cool. Thanks for asking.

Some of you's egos are so fragile that I wonder how it has not broken with the amount of things that affects it.

Toor.

The way some men think in instances like this, one wonders if they have sound mind.

It shouldn't even be up for discussion. In the West where something like this can ruin your opportunities.

He shouldn't have thought about it and if he did, the wife's explanation should have brought him back to his senses.

"Mr and Mrs Surname".

Don't bring division by putting only your sisters name
What division is putting only the sister's name going to cause in a sane family?

What would putting only the sister's name mitigate?

Don't mechanics sell cars for their clients once they have all the papers?

Feminism has a very different meaning on Nairaland. By Nairaland's definition, I'm probably a feminist because once in a while I get to air my opinion about how I find the high-level misogyny displayed on Nairaland disgusting.

While I appreciate where you're coming from, I'm not convinced that buying a car for a sibling would be too big an issue to scatter a family. If the man gets triggered by such a minor thing, maybe he wasn't such a good man to begin with. I don't even think spouses should co-own anything anyway, but that's me.

We can agree to differ. wink

Welcome to the thinking and mindset of average Nigerians on marriage. Judging by the comments and quality of thoughts on this thread, a car gift will obviously ruin and scatter a marriage. In this 21st century o, not the dark ages when women were seen as nothing, the world over.
I wasn't even shocked. In fact, they met my expectations.

I like how you reminded them that the husband is not blood. grin

How will the husband be hurt?
Is the husband greedy or selfish or even worse entitled?

Why should you even think of putting her husband's name on the car document? If he is truly a good man like you say, then a car gift with his wife's name should not bother him. In life no one knows tomorrow, put your sisters name alone.
Exactly.
